Investing in yourself and your community

Investment by definition is the act of devoting time, effort, energy or finances to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result. Investment can be in ourselves, our relationships, our finances and our health looking for positive impact. We can invest in our community by supporting our local businesses, schools and local organizations. We can serve the community through volunteerism and investment in future generations.  On a personal level, we can invest in our families and enrich relationships by giving time and effort to the people in our lives that mean the most to us. This type of investment has the most meaningful impact to not only ourselves but to the people closest to us.

Our writers, photographers and staff all live and work in The Woodlands so we were especially excited to explore behind the scenes of one of our biggest World events that has become part of The Woodlands, Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas.  This race incorporates the community, special elite medical teams, hotels, restaurants, township officials, etc. to meet not only the needs of our athletes, but showcase our beautiful community.   We were also fortunate enough to go behind the scenes of our first ever "Big As Texas" Festival coming to Montgomery County this May and learn more about some of the artist and this huge first ever event.

We are following The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival which we anticipate each year through the works of our own local artist, Summer Lydick. This issue is full of fun ways to invest back in yourself with gardening, retreats, art and cars.  Please check the feature on Alicia Nicholas and support her efforts in raising funds for the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society as Visionary of the Year.

On a personal note, three years ago I decided to launch The Woodlands City Lifestyle with a vision to bring curated personal stories back to the community and support our businesses. This was a major personal and financial investment, but I believed in my magazine and my community.  Today we get to interact with our businesses and community daily and share our vision with you.

Our passion and dedication to The Woodlands Community are the reasons why we do what we do. ..  It is a vision of love...

Get out and enjoy all the wonderful events. Spring is here!

Memorial Hermann &

IRONMANT e x sa

Together they bring a worldclass triathlon to The Woodlands

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE | HEALTH + WELLNESS
26

In the wee hours of April 27th, more than 80 professional triathletes, followed by 2500 amateurs, will dive into Lake Woodlands for a 2.4-mile swim, bike 112 miles in The Woodlands and on Hardy Toll Road, and finish with a full marathon of 26.2 miles. The marathon course, named 2023 Athlete’s Choice for Best Run in North America, takes runners around Lake Woodlands, along spectator-lined streets, and through Hippie Hollow on The Waterway. Anyone with the strength, stamina, and fortitude to finish the grueling race before midnight will forever be an IRONMAN.

Each competitor has trained countless hours to reach the triathlon. Despite all the preparation, some will face obstacles during their eight to 17-hour race. If the obstacle is a medical one, Dr. Kevin Schulz is on hand. He is the Medical Director for Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas. As an emergency room physician at Memorial Hermann -Texas Medical Center in Houston and an expert in pre-hospital medicine, he excels in this role.

Left page: At a great pace... | This page, top left: A bird’s eye view of the marathon. | Top right: Dr. Schulz ironman tattoo customized to represent his medical background | Middle: The 2.4 mile swim starts the day.

Dr. Schulz says professional triathletes can complete the course in about eight hours. “I’ll be at the finish line for the pro finish at 2:30 p.m.,” he says. “It’s exciting and it’s an honor to be there, but I almost prefer to be at the finish line at 11:30 at night for the people who’ve been out there for 16 and a half hours.”

To witness the victories of everyday people who accomplish the unimaginable is truly inspirational. To see a father with a disabled child in tow, a cancer survivor, or a blind competitor guided all the way to the finish line underscores IRONMAN’s motto that “Anything is Possible.” Dr. Schulz shares, "It’s even more special now that I’ve been on the other side.”

Yes, you read that right. After watching his fair share of IRONMAN races in The Woodlands, Galveston, and Waco and having triathletes encourage him to compete, Dr. Schulz accepted the challenge. He admits his thinking progressed from “Those people are a little crazy. I could never do that,” to “I wonder if I could do that if I tried?” When his daughter was born five and a half years ago, he got in shape and lost 60 pounds in the process. His wondering was over when he completed an IRONMAN in Florida last November. As he crossed the finish line, he heard four incredible words: You are an IRONMAN! “It was a special feeling,” he says. “To be on the athlete’s side was very rewarding.”

His 10 years as the Medical Director of Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas have been equally rewarding. In a typical race, medical teams care for several hundred patients from sunup until well after midnight in the aid stations along the route and the 60-bed air-conditioned medical tent at the finish line. Dr. Schulz’s priority is to provide the best possible care and experience to the athletes and visitors. The volunteers — 300 to 400 Memorial Hermann employees, as well as physicians, physician assistants, and healthcare workers from the community — help make this a reality. Dr. Schulz jokes, “We run our own IRONMAN on the medical team.” The day is a long and tiring one, but their dedication and quality of care have

earned them recognition as IRONMAN’s cream of the crop.

Along with caring for athletes and spectators during the race, Memorial Hermann’s sponsorship of the triathlon aligns with its vision to create healthier communities now and for generations to come, said Justin Kendrick, senior vice president and CEO of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center and Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital. Memorial Hermann is associated with several race coaches for those interested in competing. It also hosts the IRONKIDS Fun Run and Doggie Dash on April 20th to inspire the next generation of athletes.

For the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas, the IRONKIDS Fun Run, the Welcome Banquet, and the Awards Ceremony to run smoothly, it takes months of planning. Memorial Hermann brings the necessary people and agencies together to host an

event of this magnitude, says Kendrick. Dr. Schulz, the Montgomery County Hospital District, law enforcement, ambulance services, and elected officials are several who come to the table. “I rest better at night knowing that we've got a completely integrated system of resources that work really seamlessly together to keep everybody safe,” he said.

Everyone associated with planning the weeklong Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas festivities recognizes that none of the events would be possible without the dedication of the community leaders, commitment of the various agencies, and passion of the volunteers. “This is a world-class community,” Kendrick said - “And a worldclass race that attracts the top professionals in this sport from all over the world.”Last year’s triathletes came from all 50 states and 67 countries. Organizers expect April’s roster to again include competitors from around the nation and the world.

This year’s triathlon has been designated as the North American Championship. It’s also an IRONMAN Pro Series event for professional athletes. “To be named the North American Championship right here in The Woodlands is really cool and noteworthy,” said Brad Bailey, chairman of Visit The Woodlands, the convention and visitor bureau for The Woodlands. The race may be one of the large IRONMAN races with upper-echelon triathletes vying for spots at the World Championships later in the season.

An estimated 8000 to 10,000 athletes, family and friends who accompany competitors, and spectators will be on hand for the race. “Every event has some type of economic benefit to The Woodlands, some more than others, provided the participants are staying in The Woodlands hotels, dining in our restaurants, and shopping in our retail locations,” Bailey said. “Money from visitors makes up

a major component of the Township’s hotel tax collection and sales tax collection. Both of these taxes combined make up over half of The Woodlands Township’s annual revenue.” So, what’s the bottom line? Nick Wolda, chairman of Visit The Woodlands expects the total economic impact of the 2024 Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas to be $15 to $16 million. In addition, The IRONMAN Foundation will donate to a local charity or nonprofit organization.  Since the race launched here in 2011, the foundation has contributed over $1 million to area charities and organizations.

Considering this tremendous boost to our community’s economic health each year, Memorial Hermann recently extended its partnership with The IRONMAN Group through 2028. According to The IRONMAN Group, Memorial Hermann’s support has helped this event become one of the most popular full-distance IRONMAN triathlons in North America. The partnership is a win for everyone.

As a prestigious and award-winning race, Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas generates a lot of buzz for The Woodlands. The event is covered on social media, reaching tens of thousands of people. With over 7.3 million engagements through pre-race videos, live streaming of the competition, and social media posts, people all over the world saw The Woodlands virtually in 2023. Since professional triathletes are competing this year, the triathlon will be covered on several global platforms.

The race has benefits for both the township and the people within our community. “To have world-class events right here in The Woodlands is great for residents,” Bailey said. “There are so many opportunities to volunteer and participate.” More than 3000 local volunteers helped make Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas a tremendous success. As one athlete said, “I have done MANY races, and this was top-notch. I felt very supported throughout my entire journey. I will definitely tell everyone I know that IRONMAN Texas is a great race! I’ve also never seen better volunteers at any event. They were all so friendly and helpful.”

Thousands of spectators do their part by cheering on the athletes, as well. Many gather around Lake Woodlands to watch the swim in the morning. It is a rolling start with professional athletes diving in first, followed by groups of amateur triathletes. Even more residents and visitors line the marathon route to support and encourage the competitors. Hippie Hollow is a section of The Waterway with tie-dyed banners, sparkling lights, ‘bongo’-playing beatniks, and enthusiastic cheerleaders who dress for the occasion. The volunteers manning Hippie Hollow year after year make The Woodlands run a festive and spirited one. “From an athlete’s perspective, having people cheer you on is one of those things that really does matter,” Dr. Schulz said. Our community’s commitment to rallying around the athletes in every aspect of the race makes the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas a huge success.

Kendrick adds, “My advice to anybody who hasn't experienced this race either from a volunteer or spectator standpoint, make it a priority to come out and witness the race on Saturday. Witness the run and witness the finish line,” he says. “You see these amazing inspirational stories, with people accomplishing the dreams that they never thought were possible to accomplish. You'll have more inspiration for your life moving forward than you could ever imagine would be possible.”

Big As Texas

music festival season and Montgomery County
MUST SEE | ENTERTAINMENT

Image: Festival line-up - never has there been a music festival with such a huge cause.

Get ready for Texas' largest country and Americana music festival debut, right here in Montgomery County. On Mother's Day weekend, music lovers will unite at the Montgomery County Fair Grounds for a good time and a good cause over the three-day celebration.

The Big As Texas Music Festival is independently-produced and is hosting the largest economic event to benefit 40 501c3 nonprofits.  Planning got underway two years ago by the founders: Steve Said, Dosey Doe's music magnet,  Trey Diller, with 72 festivals under his belt, and Robert Marling, Chairman of the Board for Woodforest National Bank. The roots of this festival run deep for its founders

and many families in Montgomery County aiming to bring prevention and awareness to those considering taking their lives.

"We want to make a huge statement in the industry and a lasting impact in the community," says Trey Diller.

Ten percent of the music festival's ticket proceeds will be donated to the 40 nonprofits making a difference in our community, all of which will have a presence on the festival grounds all weekend. Dozens of Texas vendors and artisans will bring their best alongside exhibitions and something for all ages.

The world-class lineup for the festival is on the website, BigAsTexasFest.com and tickets can be purchased here. Fan favorites include: Dierks Bentley, Thomas Rhett, Billy Strings, Dwight Yoakam, Clay Walker, Midland, and 30 other superstars. The venue will hold two main stages and one smaller arena stage and will house 7,000 people. Besides music, the festival will showcase immersive art installations, culinary events, an equestrian event, auto shows, and your favorite Western activities from roping to line dancing. Don't miss the Fire Armadillo activation with laser weapons - either for target practice, to ward off zombies, or rescue hostages. It all sounds very Texas and it's going to be an epic family-friendly weekend.

Decadent food creations are part of every fair and festival and out of 250 applicants, 40 were narrowed down and selected as the music festival vendors with all your favorite fair foods. A live fire experience will include roasting bison, wild axis deer, and a suckling pig. Texas, food, and music bring together like-minded folk gathering to unwind, celebrate, and support our community and its locals.

"It was time we did something to make suicide more prevalent than it is," says Steve. "Because of the cause, the one thing we do not have a shortage of are volunteers."

drink V.I.P. experience. Different levels of wristbands are found online with a description of ticket packages including the swag, admission, and extras.

With a combination of music, events, and an authentic love of community and giving back, the festival's founders bring experience and passion to the Big As Texas Music Festival. Steve, and Trey each have a personal story that inspires them to launch this epic weekend to ultimately bring the community together for a great time but also a meaningful cause.

Steve Said, the music man behind Dosey Doe, is humble about his beginnings. You might not know that Steve used to write lyrics for alternative rock and roll, and country artists, and has always loved music. While he claims he cannot sing, or barely play an instrument, music has always had a big impact on his life. Steve's knowledge and passion for coffee is how Dosey Doe came to fruition, and now it's a wellknown hot spot for dinner and live music. The intimate concert venue has been home to well-known voices, big stars, and rising stars.

Bring your foldable lawn chairs or blankets for lounging around to take in the sights in between the musical numbers. ATM's will be available on the grounds and cash and cards will be accepted for food, drinks, and memorabilia. Unless you have a certified service dog for the visually impaired, leave the pups at home. Coolers and outside drinks and drink containers will not be permitted at the gates, so leave them in your car and buy local to support our vendors. We'll see you at the festival!

MARLO SAUCEDO RETELLS THE ART NARRATIVE

ARTIST’S PALETTE | ARTS + CULTURE 38

Every picture tells a story, be that as it may, but a painting composed from words adds another layer of meaning and intrigue, where we can perceive the message on many different levels.

Marlo Saucedo has been painting since childhood, winning a 4-year art scholarship whilst at elementary school that provided summer art lessons at Glassell School of Art from grades 6 thru 9th. “They introduced me to everything, from papier mache to clay, but I didn’t really take it any further until I was working on my MBA at UT in Austin. I wanted to create a diary of how I was feeling, but I was writing all the time, I

didn’t want to write, so I made it into a picture, and that was when I created my first word piece.   Returning to Houston became my inspiration, painting and shaping words into the outlines of the skyline, focusing on buildings with the words describing the architect, residents, address etc, and the background would have words telling us about the history of the City of Houston”.

Saucedo works from her home studio in The Woodlands and exhibits her work in her studio #231 at The Silos on Sawyer. Working on individual commissioned pieces using words provided by the client to create paintings celebrating memorable occasions, she also paints larger works for commercial spaces, those include MD Anderson, Houston’s Google Cloud Office

and a total of 8 Methodist Hospitals in the Houston area. A recent commission from The Woodlands Arts Council was created when 260 members of the community wrote memories, traditions, cultures and heritages on tags which they hung on a papier mache tree during The Waterway Arts Festival. The words inspired “The AncesTree Project”, a 3’ diameter circular painting representing our diverse community entwined and growing together.

“The acknowledgment that we are so much more on the inside than each of us is on the outside, and the two layers which are in these pieces; there’s an outside and an inside, and there’s a lot more that can fit on the inside than you can see the shape of on the outside.” Marlo Saucedo

A recent collaboration with artist Leslie Gaworecki and Houston’s 5th Poet Laureate Emanuelee “Outspoken” Bean, has resulted in the largest project to date. A total of 9 panels each measuring 5’ x 6’ make up one painting, and 6 panels each 7’’ tall by 33” wide for a second painting, make this a project of epic proportions. These massive works were commissioned by the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs on behalf of the Houston Airport System through the city’s Civic Arts Program. The paintings were recently installed at Gate 5, Terminal D at Bush International Airport to welcome visitors disembarking from international flights. The words, by Outspoken Bean,

are shaped into trees and birds painted with acrylic paint pens by Saucedo, which stretch across a kaleidoscopic colored sky, painted in acrylics by Gaworecki.

“Welcome to H-Town where the capital H is the only letter   where there’s an actual bridge Two objects standing alone Then reaching out to come together”

Outspoken Bean

The second painting heralds the greeting “Welcome to Houston’, written in 130 different languages, these words fill the contours of the Houston skyline.

“The H for H-Town

Is the harmony hovering around all her hues  We are a whole people, never hole people”

Outspoken Bean

Saucedo and Gaworecki will collaborate again in 2025 presenting “Color Story”, a coming together of artists and poets, an art exhibition open with readings and slam poetry, where the worlds of art and poetry converge.

What makes this nomination so special to Alicia is her story and first-hand experience with leukemia. Thirty-two years ago, Alicia’s aunt Diane was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. “Undergoing an experimental treatment that required frequent hospital stays, Diane battled leukemia for over two years. Now, nearing age sixty-seven, she still tends to her garden, entertains, takes care of her two grandchildren, and is as healthy as ever. Her courage and strength paved the way for others who would suffer the same fate.”

SUMMER LYDICK, FABULOUS, FLORAL AND FESTIVAL READY

April is the month when we celebrate art in The Woodlands with The Waterway Arts Festival, this year we welcome back our favorite artists and enjoy introductions to many new talents.

Pop expressionist painter Summer Lydick

Houston based artist Summer Lydick will be returning to The Waterway Arts Festival for 2024. Her floral paintings are bold, bright and beautiful, and when you meet the artist, you’ll see that this is a natural extension of her energy and personality.

Using every color of the rainbow, Lydick paints with acrylics and inks to achieve an organic fusion of movement and delight. Her work is instantly cheer inspiring without being overwhelming. The initial impact of her stylish pop expressionist paintings is the strong patterns and shapes of her signature sunflowers. When we look closer, we see the rendering of drawing, brushstrokes, creative effects, layering techniques and textures, all of which keep our eyes moving around the canvas, discovering new areas of interest every time.

Lydick has always been in touch with nature – she tells me “My garden is my biggest inspiration, I grow sunflowers!  The sunflower is like an incarnation of myself as a flower. Also, it is the perfect vehicle to explore color and texture and pattern, because it’s set up circularly, I can use it as a color wheel. My Mom is a gardener, my great grandmother was a gardener, it was always readily available as something to sketch and draw as I was growing up and it always resets me. I never get tired of the shapes of flowers, and plant life…. People generally have positive connotations with flowers.”

Lydick tells me that the expressive techniques used in her backgrounds include accidents and happenstance, “nature is messy… and I like to have that in my work” she says. These free-spirited backgrounds are complemented by the controlled lines of her drawings and well considered colors on the foreground. “It has to be a dialogue of what I want to do, and the canvas and the paint make their suggestions”.

Represented by Ardest Gallery in The Woodlands, Lydick’s work comes in many different sizes, from small trinket trays to huge show stopping pieces perfect for homes and business spaces.  A recent commission with RoKi Design Silk Scarves benefitted the Memorial Hermann Bobetta Lindig Breast Care Center in Houston. Lydick’s painting was auctioned at the event and all 100 scarves printed were sold out for this worthwhile cause.

The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival is made possible by volunteers and generous community sponsors.

This year’s featured artist is Los Angeles painter Regina Lyubovnaya, an oil painter who works in the traditional style, her technique explores light and depth through color and emotion.

Both artists have donated paintings to the infamous Art Dash Party, presented by The Woodlands Compounding Pharmacy, which takes place on April 12, 2024!

““Through meditation and yoga, we hope guests can reset their nervous systems...”

— Mark Turner, Lotus Ranch

Life is stressful, and now more than ever, as we sow into and support others, our families, and our professional work family, it is crucial for self-care. From focused breathing meditation, walking meditation, or simple prayer meditation, mindfulness is a supportive strategy to manage many health issues. Put your worries aside and find the best way to balance your mind, body, and spirit.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health's percentage of adults and teens who practice meditation, mindfulness, or spiritual meditation has tripled. Seventy-three percent reported that they meditated for general health wellness, while 93 percent of others meditated in some form to reduce stress and relax. Mindful meditation is a form of brain exercise, just as physical exercise keeps your body healthy. The benefits of mindfulness meditation, anywhere from five to 15 minutes a day, are all you need to begin experiencing benefits that can decrease multiple symptoms ranging from anxiety, burnout, insomnia, and anger.

Sometimes, kicking off a new regiment means getting away to rewire your mindset and returning refreshed and focused. West of Wimberly, Texas, is the Lotus Ranch , which touts itself as among the best spiritual retreats. At Lotus Ranch, part of the International Dark Sky Community, you can connect with nature – and your inner self – on 40 rolling acres. Are you taking a corporate retreat? Up to 25 guests can stay in the Lotus Ranch Lodge, which boasts nine spacious rooms and a commercial kitchen; an additional six guests may stay in the peaceful and quiet Lotus Suite

Lotus Ranch is a family-owned and operated wellness retreat center and permaculture farm in Wimberley. It provides an ideal setting for wellness retreats hosted by yoga and meditation practitioners

from around the world. Visitors enjoy the relief of being out of the city, with over two miles of hiking through forest trails and a clean, wifi-free lodge for true rest.

"Through meditation and yoga we hope guests can reset their nervous systems, reset bad habits, and go forward in life knowing the positive effects humans can have for the ecology around them," says Mark Turner of Lotus Ranch. "Our farm is a working example of organic gardening and rotational grazing in the Texas Hill Country. We capture rainwater for our gardens, and use swales and contour brush berms to recharge the aquifer."

"Our facilities are cleaned with non-toxic, essential oil-based cleaners. We do not use fragrances and chemicals because everything goes back into our land and aquifer," says Ashley Stephens of Lotus Ranch.

Retreat in the Pines is another nearby locale targeting retreats and respite for women out of Mineola, Texas. Some of their programs are: Self-Love Retreat, Deepen Your Yoga Retreat, and Mindfulness and Healing Retreats.

Retreat is the Pines is for women, founded by women. Take time to find your community, make lasting friendships, rediscover you, and—most importantly—no matter what’s going on in your life, discover you’re not alone. As women, we have many shared experiences in common. From struggles with mental health issues, toxic relationships, job loss, grief, and more. Retreat in the Pines is ready to embrace you as you perhaps start new habits being intentional about taking care of yourself.

Upcoming retreats for late April found on their website include: Grounding and Growth, and Spring Detox and Yoga. In May, reconnect to joy and escape your busy reality through their Nature retreat and feel relief to focus on what matters most to you.

GENESIS luxury” by“QUIET

SPORTY AND ELEGANT

“Quiet Luxury”...by definition it is in regards to a style or approach that emphasizes high-quality, refined, and sophisticated products or experiences without being overtly flashy or conspicuous. It is about understated elegance, focusing on subtle details, craftsmanship, and exclusivity rather than ostentatious branding or flamboyance. It is about enjoying luxury in a more discreet and understated manner. Usually, when you hear the term it is in reference to clothes or a person’s style.

Quiet Luxury

In this case though I am referring to the best possible way to describe the 2024 Genesis GV70. After spending a few days with an Uyuni White model with the “Sport Advanced” package (courtesy of Genesis of Spring) I was more than shocked to see how well appointed a compact luxury SUV could truly be! It is with zero exaggeration that I say that GV70 punches well above its weight class.

Natural in-class competitors to the Genesis GV70 are the Mercedes GLC, BMW X3, Porsche Macan S, and the Lexus NX. While those are all without a doubt excellent vehicles, to get them optioned similarly to the GV70 you will have to spend more. The Genesis is just that well priced and that well equipped.

EXTERIOR

Everyone has their own tastes. I fully get and accept that. To me though the overall exterior design of the GV70 is almost flawless. Its big crest-shaped grille is flanked by quad LED lights that almost appear to make their way all the way to the rear of the vehicle. In profile, the GV70 gives off more “dignified estate car” vibes than it does “short sport utility vehicle.” The Sport trim package includes unique front and rear bumpers as well as big 21-inch wheels that show off the hefty brakes. With the best in class 375 hp 3.5 liter V6 mated to the 8-speed automatic transmission you also get best in class performance.

INTERIOR

From the outset, it is clear that the GV70 is designed with the discerning driver in mind. With 16 power way settings for the front passengers, tailored comfort becomes the norm. Standard lumbar support further enhances your driving experience, while the optional Comfort Seat package introduces a massaging driver’s seat with multiple programs to alleviate fatigue.  Ergonomics take center stage, with all controls thoughtfully placed for intuitive access.  A row of physical buttons for frequently used functions complements the user-friendly 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system,

I was more than shocked to see how well appointed a compact luxury SUV could truly be!

which is operated via a rotary controller positioned just ahead of the gear selector. This thoughtful layout not only enhances ease of use but also reflects a level of meticulous design reminiscent of German engineering.

Once settled in behind the wheel, you are greeted with a commanding view of the road ahead, facilitated by a low dashboard and slim front pillars that provide excellent forward visibility. Furthermore, clever design elements such as windows in the rear pillars mitigate blind spots, ensuring a confident and enhanced safety

styling makes a statement on the road

driving experience. Technological innovation also shares center stage within the GV70, with features such as parking sensors, a reversing camera, and illuminated curb lines in the side mirrors enhancing safety and convenience.

Entertainment and connectivity are equally impressive. The inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto adds smartphone integration, while the Lexicon stereo delivers impeccable sound quality, transforming your cabin into a personal concert hall at the touch of either volume button. Both of those buttons are in positions you would reach for instinctively without the need to take your eyes off of the road.

Craftsmanship reigns supreme within the GV70, with world-class interior quality evident in every detail. Soft surfaces abound, enveloping occupants in a luxurious ride, while optional Napa leather upholstery elevates the cabin to a level of opulence reminiscent of a Bentley. It is no coincidence that such refinement echoes the expertise of Bentley’s former design director, who now lends his talents to Genesis, further solidifying the GV70’s status as a paragon of automotive luxury.

Storage space is plentiful throughout the cabin, with a large glove box, generously sized door bins, and a duo of Yeti coffee cup-sized cup holders ready to accommodate your beverages. A sizable spot under the armrest and a lidded tray area with wireless charging capabilities provide the perfect sanctuary for your essentials, ensuring they are always within reach. For wireless charging simply lay your phone in the tray with the screen side up.

A couple of fun features I find really addicting are a first of its kind Fingerprint Authentication System and the Remote Parking Assist (“it’s got Smaht Pahk!”).  With the GV70’s Fingerprint Authentication System, all it takes is a simple tap of a finger to start your car and load your saved profile settings for your seat, music, side mirrors, and more. It is a start up ritual that really helps channel your inner James Bond.

Speaking of James Bond, with key-fob integrated buttons you can park the car into and out of a spot without having to be inside. Using me as a driver measuring 5’11”, I found ample rear space and legroom for two adults. While the center seat offers additional seating capacity for a third passenger, the presence of a transmission tunnel limits legroom, making it best suited for shorter journeys or accommodating a child comfortably.

Behind the rear passenger seats you will find 19 cubic feet of cargo space. If that isn’t enough, that space expands to a decent 60 cubic feet by pushing a button and laying the rear seats fully flat.

In the Genesis GV70, every journey becomes an unforgettable experience, where comfort, innovation, and luxury converge to redefine the standards of modern driving.  Prepare to embark on a journey like no other, where indulgence knows no bounds and sophistication is redefined with every mile traveled.

SAFETY

As with all of its lineup, at Genesis, safety is a paramount focus. With cutting-edge features such as forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, drivers can rest assured knowing they’re protected from potential hazards

on the road.  Advanced technologies like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert provide additional peace of mind by alerting drivers to potential dangers in their surroundings.

Furthermore, the integration of adaptive cruise control helps maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, while a comprehensive suite of airbags offers protection in the event of a collision. From preventative measures to reactive systems, Genesis prioritizes the safety of both drivers and passengers, ensuring a secure and confident driving experience.

While the full list is actually much longer, it is easy to see why it is a “Top Safety Pick” winner from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Achieving high ratings in crashworthiness tests, including frontal, side, and rear impact assessments, Genesis models showcase robust structural integrity and occupant protection.

DRIVING

I found the GV70 a complete joy to drive. Around town I typically took advantage of the Eco and Comfort driving modes. With these settings the throttle had a slight delay, the suspension was softened and still provided a good steering response. This also allowed me to utilize the Lane Keeping Assist. With the tap of a button mounted on the steering wheel Lane Assist kicks in to keep you centered in the selected lane and all I needed to do was maintain the speed. Even as the roads meandered the GV70 stayed within the lines.  That said, switching the drive mode to either Sport or Sport Plus creates a totally different experience. The driver’s side seat bolsters move in, the suspension seems to stiffen, the tachometer changes to an angry looking red needle with graphics to show steam coming off the red hot gauge. Along with the slight hint of a rumbling exhaust note and the steering becoming a little crisper. It gives you the confidence to take advantage of its 375 horsepower and the 391 lb.-ft of torque.

Again, a special thank you to the staff of Genesis Of Spring for allowing me to have the time to review such a great vehicle and for their stellar Customer Service. This gives me an idea for another story but you will have to check back next month to read that article. The 2024 GV70 AWD 3.5T starts at $57,750. As tested this model sells for $66,330.

Since 1996, Arbor Gate owner, Beverly has been creating memories for families as well as a place to rejuvenate the inner gardener and nature-lover. Having always been a dream of Beverlys, she decided to put her dreams into action with the motivation that, “If I don’t pursue this, or try, I’ll never know.” From this dream, sprouts a beautiful three-and-ahalf acres of all the plants and gardening items you could ever dream of!

Now, if you ever get the chance to talk to Beverly, you will find her to be a wealth of knowledge and a believer that everyone has a green thumb, you just have to know your climate. For this, Beverly cautions against solely using the internet to find information as their location can vary greatly from our Gulf Coast region. She highly recommends talking to local plant nurseries or garden centers to figure out what the best plan of action will be for your region. “The best gardeners have killed the most plants. That’s how we learn,” says Beverly and she encourages learning about not only what plants are best for this region, but also mapping out your sun and what your aim is when starting your garden journey.

She mentions a very helpful tip when trying to map out the sun. Start by buying three small Salvia plants, which she says are easy to grow, and place them in three different areas where you want to plant. Within about two weeks, you will quickly figure out which spots are ideal for planting and which spots are not. Further, you can map the sun by going out every two hours starting at 8 am and continuing checking until around 4 pm.

Check also the drainage in the area you want to plant. If drainage is poor, that could also be another reason your plants are not doing well. Beverly highly encourages new gardeners to not be discouraged when learning and to not overwhelm themselves. Simply start out with one potted plant or find one spot in your yard that you absolutely dislike. Starting with one plant rather than filling the entire yard will seem more manageable and you will more than likely find the plant quickly thriving!

Beverly also mentions that anything can be planted in a pot. Space should not stop you from planting what you love. As long as you have a pot, a plant, the correct sunspot, the correct soil, and drainage, then you can plant anything even if you’re in an apartment!

Speaking of soil, Arbor Gate has one of the most exciting and probably most helpful creations for new and even seasoned gardeners. Arbor Gate has come up with its own recipe for soil and compost that is specific to the Gulf Coast region. Not only is the soil and compost completely organic, but it can also be used for

“One of your strongest senses is your sense of smell, so every fall I plant sweet peas out here because my mom always had sweet peas growing out our back door, so that is my mom. That is my favorite thing.”

anything that has roots whether it be in the ground or in a container. Instead of having to buy several different bags for a variety of purposes, this becomes a one-stop shop for all your soil needs! You are able to get their soil and compost from Arbor Gate or you can place an online order and buy in bulk which can also be delivered! Arbor Gate truly does it all!

One of my favorite stories that Beverly shared with me is her love for sweet peas because of her mother. As a young girl, her mother would always have sweet peas, so every fall, she plants sweet peas around the property when they bloom they give off the most beautiful fragrance and remind her of those memories with her mother. Talking to Beverly is truly like talking with a dear friend which she considers all her customers. “It’s a friendship. It’s not customers, it’s our friends.”

So, if you need a push to start gardening, whether it be for food or just to have a beautiful view, take this as a sign to get planting!
