LIFESTYLE LETTER

Be Well

January 2024 PUBLISHER

Happy New Year! There will be some of our readers who are already in full swing with their New Year's resolutions promises to themselves of new beginnings, motivating challenges, optimal physical health goals and an overall sense of achieving milestones and improving in general. Is that you? Then there will be others who are not quite ready to make the obligatory leap into the new and improved future "Healthscape" just yet. Maybe they had a lackluster holiday season, health problems of their own or a family member, or perhaps just simply sad the holidays are over, kids have returned to college and the mundane routine ensues. I will bet that most of us are stuck somewhere in the middle. Let's be real. Our January Health & Wellness issue offers something for everyone. Not ready to join the enormous new gym? Check out our Making Training Personal for options of creating your own workout with the help of home equipment or personal training guidance. Our own Woodlands residents and business owners, Andy James of Slimlogix gives us the science behind weight loss while Erin Thole keeps us on track with how to best prepare healthy meals and stay on track. The Fitness Guide displays the latest products to help us get active in the new year as well as the Cultivate a Healthier Lifestyle story - offering weight loss and tips for clean lifestyle changes. I wrote a story about a conversation I had with inspirational Olympic athlete and author Lopez Lomong. He left me speechless after hearing this story, which is an encounter of how he escaped his captors after being kidnapped and one of the "Lost Boys of the Sudan" - a true story of hope and faith. Art is all around us in The Woodlands and we feature sculptor Jay Hester who is responsible for several of the George Mitchell bronze statues throughout The Woodlands. Painters Susan Hotard and Tom LaRock show us true beauty through modern classical painting. So, regardless of which gear you are in at this stage of the New Year game, I assure you this issue will help you realize and reach for your goals. Be Well!

Delicious juice from whole ingredients

As the holiday season comes to a close, New Year resolutions begin in full swing, the most common being a pledge to a healthier lifestyle. Yet, so many of these resolutions fall through after the first few months. Both health practitioner, Erin Thole, CNHP, and SlimLogix founder, Andy James, NTP, agree that while keeping a healthy lifestyle requires work and mindfulness, it doesn’t have to be as hard or as stressful as we make it. It was my pleasure to interview both on how we can change our mindsets when it comes to food and lifestyle. So, where do we start in this life-changing journey? Diet is a giant factor when striving for a healthier lifestyle says Erin. She mentions that changing your diet is a progression and learning curve that deserves grace. Start by cutting out junk food and getting rid of processed foods and sugars as well as food that contains zero nutrients. Shop the perimeter of the grocery store as that is where you find your whole foods. Erin stresses the need to eat food in its most primitive and basic forms and to prep your meals in advance. There are also ways to make healthy meals without cooking a giant gourmet meal that takes hours. For days you know that you will be busy, find a few crockpot meals that you can throw together at the beginning of the day and have ready in time for dinner. Buying rotisserie chickens and keeping veggies on hand to roast also helps. Erin shared her Pinterest board with me and the variety of delicious, anti-inflammatory meals she had linked had my mouth watering! She stresses that healthy food does not need to be boring! Implement a treat a few times a week and try new recipes to avoid falling into a rut.“Perfection is an illusion. It is not all or nothing. You fine-tune as you learn and grow.”

While Erin doesn’t encourage following a strict diet like keto or paleo, she does tell clients to combine a few dietary plans to support the body as it is healing from inflammatory foods and diet changes. She described that each of these diets has a time and a place, but allowing yourself room to change and tweak your meals leaves a perfectly customizable diet that supports your body and its individual needs. For some, the idea of changing their entire lifestyle is overwhelming, but that is where Erin comes in! Her main goal for clients is to teach them how to trust their intuition and their body. Erin supports tapping into emotions when navigating food and asking questions. Why is this a craving? Why do I want this food? Am I actually hungry or am I just stressed or looking to cure boredom? Try taking a walk or a nap to relieve stress or talking to a friend to negate those feelings instead of masking them with snacks. Discovering ways to transition those feelings into an action plan can make a giant impact when changing your lifestyle! Erin strongly encourages clients to make a game plan and to hold themselves accountable. If you only have ten minutes, then do a ten-minute workout! Everyone has to start somewhere and taking care of your body is extremely important! “Our bodies are the only thing that we absolutely have without a doubt,” says Erin. She encourages those who are starting their wellness journey that not everything will be changed at the beginning. Take small steps and slowly build from there. Another truly incredible and passionate individual is Andy James who is the founder of SlimLogix System, a 12-week weight loss program that focuses predominately on educating members. Andy’s journey to creating this program is CONTINUED >

truly inspirational! After watching poor health and lifestyle choices assist in the rapid decline of his father’s health, who passed away from cancer in 2011, Andy made it his mission to create a space full of knowledge where others could better their health both mentally and physically. So, how is Andy’s program, SlimLogix, different from other weight loss programs? How does it work? The main concept of this program that Andy could not stress enough is the drive for education. “Knowledge is power,” says Andy. The more knowledge you have about how your body works the more likely you are to fuel yourself with healthier options. By the end of the program, Andy’s goal is to empower you with knowledge and understanding of how food heals the body while supporting a healthy and safe weight loss journey. Not only does the program heavily focus on educating members on how weight can be effectively managed, but Andy also requires each person to wear a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) which helps further members’ education. With these monitors, Andy is able to help members navigate their food choices and how these choices impact the body. Even more impressive are the customized meal plans that are crafted around each person’s needs and lifestyles. Each member receives a consultation with a professional chef who personalizes recipes for each person. Aside from the personalized recipes, members will receive the SlimLogix Food Guide which will aid in the purchase of foods. These recipes, food preferences, and lifestyle choices are discussed thoroughly with each client through a certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. Andy opts for a natural, simple weight loss experience that works with life's busy schedule.

Most weight loss programs always have you buying supplements, shakes, pills, or using a number system based on what you are allowed to eat. Others put you on crazy exercise plans or make you fill out intense food journals which take time out of your busy schedule. Again, Andy emphasizes that everything falls back to educating members. Through education modules, Andy helps members view their bodies from the inside and open windows into the metabolism. He believes that a willingness to learn paired with eating whole, nutrient-dense foods is all you need to keep the weight off for good, successfully! "Food is medicine and should be enjoyed!” says Andy. There is no need for diet pills, shakes, or refraining yourself from eating if you are hungry. Avoid overly processed foods to receive the best possible results for losing weight. Andy also recommends avoiding foods that contain a barcode. While this might sound challenging, he encourages members to shop at local farmer’s markets for nutritious, whole foods. Go back to the basics of meeting with the people who grow your food. When talking with Andy, I was surprised that exercise was very rarely mentioned. Andy mentions that high-intensity workouts are not necessary for losing weight. In fact, he mentions that anything too rigorous on the body could add unnecessary stress to the body. When our bodies feel stressed, they retain everything and turn toward a survival mode instinct. This results in the inability to lose weight. Truly, the more we educate ourselves about the body and how it works, the more we can take care of it. After talking with Erin and Andy, I was definitely encouraged to take a step back and look at my own plate and lifestyle habits!

In His Own Words MEET DAVID P. BERNARD , THE NEW CEO OF HOUSTON METHODIST THE WOODLANDS This month, David P. Bernard, senior vice president of Houston Methodist, adds chief executive officer of Houston Methodist The Woodlands to his title. Debbie Sukin vacated his new position. She had been the executive vice president and CEO of HM The Woodlands Hospital since it was built but left to become president of Texas Children’s. City Lifestyle caught up with Bernard as he prepared to move from HM Baytown, where he has been since 2015. We wanted to determine what his new role would mean to both the hospital and the people here.

CL - THE PRESIDENT AND CEO OF HOUSTON METHODIST, MARC L. BOOM, SAYS YOU ARE PERFECT FOR THE HMTW CEO JOB. HE SAID YOU SHARED YOUR TALENTS AND PASSIONS TO RALLY THE HOSPITAL’S EMPLOYEES AND PHYSICIANS AROUND A SHARED MISSION. SO, WHAT PASSIONS DO YOU PLAN TO SHARE UPON YOUR ARRIVAL AT THE WOODLANDS HOUSTON METHODIST?

Bernard - You could say my passion began nearly 24 years ago when I started my career at Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, and it has only grown over the years. I truly appreciate how our faith-based institution always leads with its values of integrity, compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence. I bring a passion for excellence. Growing up, my family taught me that if you do something, make sure you do it right and put in the hard work to make it happen. I bring a passion for our people and our culture. One of my favorite things about Houston Methodist is the people and how we all come together to make up our amazing values-driven culture. Being a leader at Houston Methodist is

truly an honor, and I sincerely enjoy working alongside the most amazing team of physicians, staff, and volunteers each day. I bring a passion for helping others. I have always believed that it only takes a moment to make a difference in someone’s life and that you should always be grateful for the opportunity to help others. Whether it is a patient, colleague, or member of the community, we are given that opportunity each day at Houston Methodist, and it is such an honor.

CL - WHAT ARE THE GREATEST ASSETS YOU BRING TO YOUR NEW POSITION THAT WILL HELP YOU ACHIEVE THESE PASSIONS?

Bernard - I joined Houston Methodist in 2000 and spent 15 years at Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers, and consistently ranked as a US News and Worlds Report’s Honor Roll Hospital. During my time at the Texas Medical Center, I served in various finance and operational leadership roles and built world-class clinical, research, and education programs. I also had the opportunity to lead the DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center and the J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center into nationally recognized centers of excellence. I spent the past eight and a half years at Houston Methodist Baytown, leading major capital expansion projects, building integrated care delivery networks, and improving the hospital’s outcomes in safety, quality, and service. I’m extremely proud of the Baytown team for improving our Vizient ranking from #104 in 2017 to #2 the past two years in a row, only following Houston Methodist The Woodlands, which has been ranked #1 for

three consecutive years. I look forward to working with my new team in The Woodlands and partnering with our colleagues from across the system to improve the care and services we provide to our community. Another wonderful asset for my new role that I would be remiss if I didn’t mention is my working relationship with Debbie Sukin, which has lasted for more than two decades. Debbie has been a mentor and role model for me since I joined Houston Methodist. We have worked closely to ensure a smooth transition from her time as CEO of Houston Methodist The Woodlands. I know Debbie is only a phone call away and is rooting for our continued success. We look forward to continuing our long-standing partnership with Texas Children’s under Debbie’s leadership.

CL -WHAT DO YOU WANT THE RESIDENTS OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY TO KNOW ABOUT YOU, AND WHAT DOES YOUR ARRIVAL MEAN TO THEM?

Bernard - I want our friends and neighbors in Montgomery County to know that Houston Methodist The Woodlands will always put the patient at the center of everything we do, and we will continue to expand our facilities and services to meet the growing needs of our community. We truly appreciate the support the community has shown the hospital since we opened our doors in 2017, and we look forward to strengthening our relationship and growing with the community to support the future success of The Woodlands and Montgomery County.

CL - WHAT ROLE(S) DO YOU FEEL A HOSPITAL SHOULD FILL IN A COMMUNITY?

Bernard - I have always felt that hospitals, schools, churches, and other spiritual gathering places serve as foundational elements of any community. It is here where the community gathers to teach, learn, pray, and care for each other. While we provide physical, emotional, and spiritual care to support a productive and thriving community, we also serve as a part of the foundation of The Woodlands community, celebrating new life and providing hope and healing at the most challenging times. Our hospital is a special place, and we are proud to serve our community. A preeminent hospital system like Houston Methodist can offer a fully integrated network of care and services to the community that is second to none. A true “one-stop shop” for all health needs. After opening our newest tower in 2022, Houston Methodist The Woodlands now offers 293 beds and provides access to the most innovative care and technology available. While we have seen rapid growth and development of our services in The Woodlands since our opening in 2017, we are distinguished by the amazing staff and physicians who provide personalized care and services to the members of our community each day. As one of the major employers in our community, we also serve as a place for professional and personal growth for the members of our community. Houston Methodist is proud to be a Magnetdesignated hospital and ranked #2 in the nation for Best Large Employers, according to Forbes. We are dedicated to our employees and excited to continue to contribute to The Woodland’s economic vitality and growth in our community.

CL - YEARS FROM NOW, WHEN YOU LOOK BACK AT YOUR TIME HERE, HOW DO YOU WANT THAT TIME TO BE DESCRIBED?

small investment, big comfort.

Bernard - I am so fortunate to succeed Debbie Sukin, who has built Houston Methodist The Woodlands into the preeminent health care provider in Montgomery County and the #1 complex care medical center in the nation. I hope to build upon this great tradition of excellence and relentlessly pursue every opportunity to improve the care and service we provide to our community. When I look back on my time in The Woodlands, I hope to be proud of the people, partnerships, friendships, and amazing culture that make Houston Methodist The Woodlands the very best place in the country to receive care as a patient, work as an employee and practice medicine as a physician. HOPE FOR THOSE WITH chronic nerve pain The Burrows Muscle and Nerve Center team

DR. GUY BURROWS’ CLINIC INFUSES HEALING, HEALTH, AND COMFORT ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN GARRETT

Numbness. Pain. Inability to walk. These are all targets of Dr. Guy Burrows’ adulthood-long attempts to eliminate peripheral neuropathy from the twenty million people in the United States who suffer from it. Dr Burrows’ chief nemesis is chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), a neurological disorder that – according to the National Institute of Health – involves progressive weakness and reduced senses in the arms and legs. Symptoms of CIDP can include tingling or no feeling in fingers and toes, numbness with or without pain, poor balance, difficulty walking, weakness of arms and legs, loss of reflexes, and fatigue. “The average time to diagnose CIDP is nine years under seven doctors,” says Dr Burrows. “Neuropathy is not rare, but it’s rarely diagnosed. I receive referrals from every hospital around – from neurologists, rheumatologists, and endocrinologists alike – once they realize that a neuromuscular issue is involved.” The Burrows Center currently treats approximately two hundred patients suffering from varying degrees of neuropathy. While some cases have mild symptoms that are easily alleviated through a series of infusion sessions and other treatments, others pose a severe challenge for Burrows and his staff, a challenge that they willingly take on.

“One of the worst cases that came to us was a 40-year-old woman who was weak to the point of having no abilities, was wheelchair bound and had to breathe through a tracheostomy tube and eat through a PEG [Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy] tube. Today, she is walking and talking. I love what I do because I get people out of wheelchairs, and now they’re living full lives.” Burrows is a board-certified neurologist with fellowship training in peripheral nerve disorders and neuromuscular diseases and is the head neuromuscular specialist at the eponymous Burrows Muscle and Nerve Center in Shenandoah between Conroe and The Woodlands. After receiving his medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC, he interned in family practice in Missouri and completed his residency in neurology and fellowship in neurophysiology/peripheral nerve disorders at Wilford Hall Medical Center. This US Air Force medical treatment facility at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio presaged his subsequent experience as a general medical officer and flight surgeon at Fairford Air Force Base in the United Kingdom, as a flight surgeon at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, and as wing surgeon general and chief flight surgeon in Oman during Operation Desert Storm.

32

M UST SE E | L I FE + C ULTU RE

During his early medical career, Burrows trained under Harvard University’s head of neuropsychology – as the specialty was known in 1995 in its early days of discovery. “Being a neuromuscular specialist is incredibly rare because that specialty is still emerging,” he said. “In Houston, for example, there are only six or seven of us. We’re subspecialists in an already tight specialty. The things that I treat, many doctors don’t understand; that’s how specialized what I do is.” Patients coming to the center for the first time undergo a comprehensive testing process – from full reports on histories and symptoms to blood labs that check for nearly fifty conditions and diseases – in a muted, relaxed environment guided by courteous, professional staff that shares Burrows’ passion for improving the lives of those in pain. “I find out specifically what is wrong with my patients, and I treat them accordingly. My treatments make pain go away. Too many of them come to me, having been told that there’s nothing that can be done to help them. But we can.” The Burrows Muscle and Nerve Center invites anyone suffering from a burning sensation throughout the extremities, body weakness, or a sense of falling or numbness to come in for a consultation at 9191 Pinecroft Drive, suite 200. “You’re never too old or ‘too far gone’ to be treated,” he said. “If there’s something I can do to improve your quality of life, I’m here.”

“How did you manage to maintain emotional control and mental clarity when you were in such a dangerous situation?” This was the last question I proposed to Lopez Lomong after listening to his mesmerizing story. It was one of the only sentences I spoke during the spontaneous conversation I was able to have with him during his inspirational visit with the humanitarian organization World Vision at The Woodlands Christian Academy. As I sat across the table from the author of “Running for My Life”, an Olympic Athlete, powerhouse hero, and quite frankly, a bea-

con of light, I wondered how I would find the words to write his story. Lopez Lomong has a story of hope. His journey began as a 6-year-old boy in Africa and one of 20,000 children kidnapped from their families that later became known as the Lost Boys of Sudan during the second Sudanese Civil War. After a harrowing escape, he made his way to Kenya where they entered a refugee camp and lived for 10 years until he was eventually brought to the US by an unaccompanied minor refugee

program where he met his US parents in New York and started a new life with his new family. While in the refugee camp, he learned of his lightning-fast speed while running and playing soccer. His dream was born when he caught a glimpse of Michael Johnson running in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney on a black and white TV. Lopez felt a fire and passion ignite inside him. Lopez knew that his faith saved his life. He realized God was at work and was guiding his journey. In 2007, and after an incredible running career in high school and college, he turned pro and got his US citizenship in time to qualify for the Olympic trials in the following year. His dream came true and he was a member of the American Team in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics! CONTINUED >

Lopez said God gave him strength to survive and he knew it was for a reason. “Life is about looking forward and I don’t focus on resentment,” he explained. His mission is now to “pay it forward” and in 2011 he started The Lopez Lomong Foundation to help create a brighter future for the families in crisis and poverty after war. He partnered with the humanitarian organization World Vision and its school program Ignite aimed at the goal of raising up students to be global leaders who are convicted to live out their

Christian faith in service to others. The partnership’s mission is to offer care, support and hope for a better future to families in South Sudan recovering from a life of warfare. Lopez and World Vision now advocate for clean water, education, healthcare and nutrition. He started the Lopez Lomong Foundation in 2011 and along with World Vision, the 4 South Sudan project was born. “Lopez shows us that no matter where you start in life, you can use what you have to positively impact the world,” said Derek Sciba, Head of Marketing for World Vision Ignite. Lopez says that life is about mission and forgiveness. “You must work at your God given talent. You have a responsibility to make a difference. Speak up for others who cannot speak for themselves.” At the end of the conversation, I asked the question (which came from my 18-year old son): How did you manage to maintain emotional control and mental clarity when you could have been killed at any moment? He quietly answered, “Faith is my constant. I knew God was with me. I asked him to rescue me.” To which I replied, “Lopez Lomong, you are a true light worker.”

Meet Texas Countr y Artist Sandee June

Country Music and Healthy Living Country artist Sandee June is a lifelong Texan, music lover and health enthusiast. She grew up in Santa Fe, Texas, where she raised her own family and still lives today. A registered nurse for 26 years, June traded her stethoscope for a guitar when she turned 50. “I decided it was time to do something for myself. My children were grown and gone and working on giving me lots of grandchildren. So, I bought a guitar and learned to play. Shortly after, I started going to open mic nights,” said June. She kickstarted her music career during COVID and to date has released five songs, all of which have climbed to the Top 40 of the Texas Country Music Chart. Her soothing tone reminds us of classic country icon Patsy Cline, and it’s also easy to recognize the influences of Loretta Lynn, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and Cat Stevens. “Listening to such a diverse group of amazing musicians growing up really impacted my ability to cross over and sing classic country and classic rock. This music was embedded in every fiber of my DNA. It really did help create my sound,” she added.

Also embedded in her DNA is a passion for health and wellness. “I think it truly is a quality for me that is innate. My Dad was big about taking care of the body God gave us. Every day I try to walk 1 to 2 miles and do yoga or Pilates. I fast 16-18 hours by not eating after 6pm and drink 1-2 cups of green tea daily – and I try to eat a colorful, whole foods diet while getting eight hours of sleep every night,” she added. She also makes sure she has everything prepared the day before a show – from the set list to her clothing – because taking care of one’s mental health is just as important. “I like to pray and meditate, preferably outdoors, and be grounded barefoot in the grass because it helps me calm any anxious or nervous feelings,” she added. June encourages anyone who wants to adopt a healthy lifestyle to start with one small change at a time and remember, “Hydration, whole foods and movement are most important to maintain a healthy body.” Check out Sandee June’s single, “Whiskey Us Away,” wherever you get your music and visit sandeejunemusic.com to find out where you can catch a live performance.

Jay Hester A HERITAGE IN BRONZE HOLDS THE HEART OF THE WOODLANDS

One of the most interesting sculptural collections we are fortunate to have in our community was created by Boerne artist Jay Hester. The sculptures of George Mitchell and Cynthia Woods-Mitchell, with their family, are prominently positioned in the original heart of The Woodlands. These important pieces of public art pay homage to the founders of The Woodlands, The Pavilion, and the accomplished vision that followed. The first sculpture Hester created of George Mitchell was commissioned by his family as a surprise, the 3D hand-built clay renderings of Mr Mitchell had to be created from provided photographs. “Several family members came to my studio in Boerne to discuss the project with Jay and the boys, his grandsons, sat for him during the process. The life size sculpture was to depict Mr Mitchell explaining to these young boys his vision in developing The Woodlands community”, Jay’s wife Judy explained. “The sculpture that was initially made from clay before being cast in bronze, took about one year to create from start to installation, in 1997”. Hester was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1940 and grew up in Birmingham. His professional art career began when he was employed as an illustrator for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in Georgia, working on renderings of the C5 in a high security environment. A graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, Hester worked as a commercial artist for many years before he made the decision to paint and sculpt full time! With a passion for Western Art, his unlimited expertise extends to a broad range of subjects, including wildlife, landscape and Native

American studies. Hester continues his practice of painting and sculpting to this day and his work can be seen in many locations throughout Texas. Sculptures, original paintings and prints are available on his website – jhestergallery.net. Following the success of the first sculpture, a second commission followed, and a tribute to Pavilion founder, Cynthia Woods-Mitchell, was installed in 2001, and was a Mother’s Day gift from her husband, the plaque reads “In recognition of her love for children and passion for the arts”. The sculpture, also bronze, is a figurative grouping, depicting Cynthia Woods-Mitchell reading to a group of three children. The piece represents her reading to the inner-city children which was something she did regularly. Later, in 2007, a large, monumental, heroic size bronze of George Mitchell was unveiled, standing with his arm raised and a smile on his face, this gesture symbolizing “the vision of what has taken place in the area, with a smile of satisfaction” Jay Hester tells me. Jay Hester’s passion for art has been a lifelong vocation, he sums it up beautifully in these words – “To absorb the essence of life and the inspiration of the world around me is my commitment to life itself. Being fortunate enough to have the ability to express this love of life in a unique way has led me to pursue creative forms of expression…. both in clay and on canvas. My goal in life is to give this generation and the generations to come what is often held captive in the mind’s eye and lost forever. I search for the essence of the subject. My hope is that when people view my work, they will discover the infinite beauty of the world around them.”

Susan Hotard with her portrait and floral still life paintings

January is the month of commitments. However, we don’t generally consider the commitment behind a great artist, we may assume that perhaps they have been bestowed a marvelous gift, the ability to capture the essence of life, however, an enormous amount of training, time, and discipline is involved. I spoke with two prominent artists in The Woodlands, both traditional oil painters, with two very different approaches. The light simply glows from Susan Hotard’s paintings, a master painter of portraits and floral still life scenes, this enchanting light pulls the viewer into her work and engages us with the narrative. A daughter of two artists, Hotard first became interested in art at the age of 4, when her father, drew a pastel portrait of her, “I remember him putting white on the eye to reflect the light, I was fascinated, and promptly created 24 of my own portraits, I love reflection”. Majoring in interior design with a BFA, from The School of Art and Architecture, Louisiana Tech, as well as studies in Italy, Hotard explains - “proposed

home designs had to be created with the knowledge of the effect of light and shadows, and it’s always been an influence on my work.” Later Hotard attended The New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts. Working with oil paint on linen, she stands back from the easel and paints with a long brush held at arm’s length. Hotard delights in painting her two grandchildren, she enjoys the freedom of painting in her own style which she attributes to capturing the character and mystique of her subjects. A favorite, multiple award-winning portrait, “Sophie”, epitomizes her whole experience of painting. “It just came off the brush, it was almost like I wasn’t there” she tells me about her process and being completely absorbed and focused on her work. This evocative painting is quintessential of her impressionistic, realism style, the play of light with shadow, large, sweeping, loose brushstrokes and highlights of final sgraffito scrapings where the canvas is once again visible through the painting. "Riding The Highline in The Fall" by Tom LaRock, a winner for The Woodlands High School Trust

Tom LaRock and Susan Hotard

54

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | ARTS + CU LT U RE

“The purpose of my work is to represent to the viewer the beauty, wonder and glory of God’s creations"

Hotard is a signature member of the Oil Painters of America, the American Impressionist Society, and the National Oil and Acrylic Society, as well as having two paintings in the Encyclopedia of Oil Painting Techniques Book. She has exhibited her work statewide and taught portrait, figure and still life workshops in Texas and her native Louisiana. Tom LaRock began his art journey in 2013 after retiring from a mechanical engineering career and finally followed his lifelong dream to paint! Moving to New York for 3 years to study under the instruction of his son, Joshua LaRock, who ran a successful atelier in the city. Graduating from this intensive form of study, LaRock returned to Texas where he continues to work as a full-time artist and in the past few years has successfully launched his own traditional style art school, “The classical atelier was dying” he tells me, “There are very few like it in the entire state of Texas.” LaRock’s art salon offers classes which are individually tailored to the student, including full and part time courses and workshops in all aspects of classical drawing and painting, from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Fundamentals of this classical, realistic, method of learning include perspective, composition, design and human anatomy. The atelier is located at 701 Sawdust Road in The Woodlands and class details are available online. LaRock is also a prolific painter, working on commissioned work as well as his own practice, painting landscapes, still life pieces and portraits. When beginning a

landscape, he will initially work outdoors, en plein air, this immersive style of painting incites the feeling for the finished piece. He paints a series of studies from which he takes his final compositions, which are created in his studio, the results are gloriously detailed with a romantic, idyllic atmosphere, commissions of special places capture the ambiance of their memory. LaRock’s finely painted still life works are inspired by 17th century Dutch and Flemish artists, he works with oil paint on Belgian linen and occasionally aluminum, which he prepares with a ground to accept the paint. “The purpose of my work is to represent to the viewer the beauty, wonder and glory of God’s creations” LaRock states. Both artists are represented by the newly opened Tartaglia Gallery. Owner, Danna Tartaglia, enjoys representing “artists who work in academic and traditional styles”. An experienced gallerist, previously located in California, she decided to return to her Texas roots during the pandemic and drove for 5 days across the country with her cat to come home! An artist herself, Tartaglia advises emerging artists to “Let your own personality develop in your art practice, and not to be too influenced by what everyone else is doing”. Tartaglia Fine Art Gallery is located at 26106 Oak Ridge Drive. susanhotardartist.com tomlarockart.com tartagliagallery.com

New Year’s resolutions firmly in place, you’re ready to commit to a stronger, healthier life! But where to even start? It’s easy to get lost and overwhelmed with the big franchise gyms, and the highly specialized, boutique gyms can lack the variety to hold interest long term. Everybody — and every body — is unique, so how do you create a training program that is personalized and successful? Body Fitness Training (BFT) offers an answer. Located near Market Street in The Woodlands, BFT combines cardio, strength and resistance training in a science- and technology-based program that builds on an individual’s current fitness level. Each 50-minute class, led by two or three highly certified coaches, is like a semi-private personal training session. The difference at BFT, according to franchise owners Clay and Vanessa Walden, is their curated eight- to 12-week progressive training blocks, variation and increased overloading that is monitored and guided for each person. “What I think really sets us apart, though, is our people,” Vanessa said. “It’s our community. When we opened BFT in February 2023, we hoped for and prayed for this to be a place where people not only came to workout but felt at home. It’s really surpassed what we could imagine.

Birthdays, babies, anniversaries, reaching a goal, the BFT family celebrates together.” Clay points out that one of their bigger challenges is overcoming misconceptions and unreasonable expectations that have been created in the fitness industry. “Education is really important to us, education to understand what works for your body and how your body responds,” he said. “We meet you where you are. You are enough, and your only competition is you. Bring us the ‘Why’ for working out, and we’ll give you the ‘How.’” For the days when there just isn’t time to get away for a workout, nothing beats a well-outfitted home gym. Dusty Schlotfeldt, Vice President of Top Fitness, agrees that creating a personal workout space for your home base that is based on what you like to do, what you’ve enjoyed doing in the past and any medical concerns is one of the best ways to achieve and maintain a healthier lifestyle. “A treadmill is still the number one piece of home equipment, and more people are realizing the importance of including strength training to offset the loss of bone mass as we get older,” Dusty said. “We recommend adding hand weights, resistance bands and medicine balls when we’re personalizing a workout space.”
