Finding Your Own Style...

Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives.

Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities.

We are proud of this issue as we have put together a collection of inspiring stories about people that are living their dreams through passing on their love of style.  We transformed the beautiful new Hyatt Regency in Conroe to our own backdrop in our fashion shoot to highlight our fantastic styles found in our locally owned boutiques right here in The Woodlands.

As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much here in The Woodlands to uplift our spirits,  and ignite your creativity.  You can ignite the spirits of persons fighting cancer by supporting  the "In The Pink of Health"  luncheon hosted by Memorial Hermann Hospital with best selling author, Elin Hilderbrand as the keynote speaker.

So stay true to you and remember the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are.  This is something no one on earth can duplicate.

Here’s to being uniquely you!

FUTURE PAST, FASHION FORWARD

When our closets are stuffed full and we still “have nothing to wear” it’s a big problem, especially when they are bursting at the seams!  For former interior designer Sarah-Jayne Smith this was an ongoing conundrum. Originally from England, she was astounded by the sizes of our closets here in the US, but even more astonished that they were chock full of items that failed to make us happy.

Sadly, many of the contents of such closets are a major contributor to our fast fashion problem. Their manufacture, delivery, and the use of non-biodegradable fabrics containing plastics, toxic chemicals and dyes are polluting and damaging our world at a vast rate of knots.

Fast fashion fills our closets with clothing we will only wear a few times, the industry manufactures an abundance of poor-quality garments, making them essentially disposable. Mass produced by underpaid workers, and shipped thousands of miles, with the waste product then being shipped back, it’s wreaking havoc on our world. As individuals, we currently consume over 400% of what we used to.

Founding Magpies & Peacocks 12 years ago was a step towards promoting awareness of conscious consumption for Sarah- Jayne, and this nonprofit organization has grown extensively, now preparing to relocate to a new, chic, century old warehouse space complete with a store front, coffee shop, in-house design and maker premises and an event space, all with a cool eclectic vibe.

I spoke to Ahshia Berry, VP/Director of Communications, to gain some insight into their practice of sustainable fashion and what we can do as responsible global citizens.

To date, Magpies & Peacocks have diverted 195 tons of fabric from landfill, using garments and fabrics from personal and commercial donations such as bolt ends from the interior design and furnishing industries, bags of unwanted closet clear outs which include vintage clothing, broken jewelry and other unwanted items. These discards are made into functional, wearable items for their exquisite fashion lines, home décor and pet products. “The reworking of vintage items keeps the story of fashion alive” Ahshia states, “vintage clothes were better made with higher quality fabrics, so still have a lot of living to do.”

Magpies & Peacocks are the nation’s only 501(c) 3 nonprofit design house dedicated to the reuse of clothing, surplus textiles and accessories averted from landfill. Their mission focuses on four purposes;

The most unusual donation to date has been a recent gift of a 747 aircraft from Southwest Airlines! The leather from the seats will be utilized for their “Take Flight” design line to launch at the Magpies & Peacocks Annual Fundraising event.

Magpies & Peacocks regular staff receive a living wage for their work, in comparison to the low wages and bad conditions the industry is renowned for. A percentage of donated items are used to supply materials to local schools, colleges and extracurricular programs, the rest are reworked into the collections available in the store.

Embracing the “Seasons”

Country artist Ryan Lindsay shares his eclectic style and the meaning behind his music.

Whether on stage or enjoying the great outdoors, country singer Ryan Lindsay enjoys a style that is almost always completed with a pair of cowboy boots. As an Alberta, Canada, native, he often chooses denim on denim – known as the Canadian tuxedo. Wrangler jeans and ‘80s American-made Levi’s are his favorite for fit and comfort when performing on stage, which complements his eclectic style of thrift-store items that he finds while on tour and has custom tailored. And a cowboy singer always has the perfect hat.

“My go-to when it’s not too hot is an old black wide brim that I’ve had for ages, and over the years, I have done my own stitching on it to add some style,” said Lindsay. “It’s also been through the shop at Standard Hat Works in Waco. They have helped refurbish it and give it a few more years of life.”

Lindsay’s permanent residence may be in Canada, but his growing popularity among Red Dirt music fans has him traveling the US and spending a lot of time on Texas stages. He gets to experience all the seasons – and that’s reflected in his style and music. This year, Lindsay released his new album “Seasons,” a 9-song compilation of music he previously offered throughout the course of a year, two songs at a time, for each season. Now they are bundled together with a bonus track.

“When it came time to make this album, Canada was still very much locked down in the pandemic. We had to Zoom into a session with a band in Nashville to record the first two songs, which were for ‘Fall,’” said Lindsay. “We put those two songs out and then started working on two songs for ‘Winter.’ By recording two songs and immediately putting them out, people got to see me go through the personal seasons in my life.”

Lindsay illustrates his personal seasons with songs like “You, Me and the Mountains,” which poetically relays the frustration he felt when the parents of the girl he was seeing did not approve of their relationship due to cultural differences; and “Too Soon,” a powerful ballad about coping with the loss of a friend.

As Lindsay continued writing songs for each season, he found himself digging deeper. He calls the album a “true reflection of the journey that got him where he is today.”

“The further I got into this project, the more I was able to communicate who I am musically,” he added.

Fans from Canada down to Texas are embracing Lindsay’s style and new music. “Seasons” is smart, genuine, and thoughtful – and highlights his insightful songwriting and rich vocals.

Lindsay is looking forward to touring Texas again this fall. Visit ryanlindsaymusic.com to learn more about his music and where you can hear him live.

Uncovering the Magic: An Inside Look at TA DA by KAT

STAGING AND DESIGN COMBINING ART, PASSION, AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

When you navigate to the homepage of KAT Troulinos’s website, the first thing you see is the headline: Visual Magic with TA DA by KAT.  If it is the task of the magician to inspire the imagination of their audience, then magic is indeed KAT’s business. On the goal of her home staging, KAT says, “You want a transfer of emotion. You want people to see themselves living in the space not wondering who lives here.” Through her work, KAT stirs up the feelings of potential buyers by showing them what life could be like in a potential space. This gets homes sold faster.  According to NAR National Association of Realtors® 5-19% faster!

TA DA by KAT is going on 13 years of doing business, but KAT didn’t start out as the Master Stager, Investor Staging Consultant, Certified Color Expert, and Luxury Home Staging Specialist that she is today. Many years ago, she worked in model homes. While showing a home with a beautiful, but empty, sunroom, she noticed everyone asked of the space “What is this for?” By adding a wicker loveseat, rug, side table, desk, and some surface décor, she was able to show buyers how the room could be used. After her added touches, the property sold in two weeks. Later, she got her real estate license in Texas, intending to do staging as merely a value-add, but the staging soon took on a life of its own.

So, what happens when TA DA by KAT comes to work their staging magic? That depends on the situation. Home sales usually fall into two different categories: occupied or unoccupied. For those trying to sell a home they currently reside in, KAT says it can be

KAT is surrounded by family photos and her own artwork on the walls of her home.

a lot like living in a fishbowl. “If you do everything I recommend, you’re going to be living in a fishbowl for much less time,” she says.

When KAT does staging, she tailors the décor to the sociographic preferences and expectations of the targeted bucket of buyers in that price point “It’s all about the details.” When a Realtor® takes a potential buyer up to the front door, they spend a few seconds fiddling with their keys and papers. What’s the buyer doing for that time? Observing the curb appeal. KAT doesn’t want them to see dead plants, a dirt dauber nest, or a worn-out welcome mat. Those things can cause a subliminal thought from the potential buyer of “I wonder what else they have neglected in the upkeep of the home?”

Inside, there should be zero evidence of someone living in the home. During the consultation, KAT will tell you what to remove, what to add, what to pack, what to repair, and sometimes even what to paint. Afterwards, she provides a one-page punch list that recaps what was discussed.

The second phase is when the TA DA by KAT team gets hands on. Depending on what the home needs, they bring in “power pieces” that look great in photos. This could be furniture, art, greenery, and/ or small décor. They don’t usually provide soft goods but will make recommendations if needed. Sometimes the suggestions will include moving existing furniture around to improve flow or rehanging artwork at a more optimal height.

Home staging isn’t where KAT’s magic stops. During 2020, she saw a substantial increase in her design work. What’s the difference between staging and design? While staging is about what the buyer wants, design is all for the occupant. KAT believes homes are a place for expression and regeneration, and should be an extension of who the family is. KAT asks what the desired feeling is, and then uses her knowledge of color, scale, flow, and even sound to generate that within the space.

TA DA by KAT  also does work in the commercial world. A recent design project she truly loved was two spa rooms in a medical office. For this space, KAT assisted with a rebrand by changing the office colors and decorations. She also crafted a custom biophilic art piece in the likeness of the office’s emblem. In addition to offices, she has done design work for several restaurants and a nonprofit.

When asked about her favorite project, KAT answers with an almost giddy excitement, “The next one that I do is my favorite.”
Creativity abounds in the living spaces of KAT's home. The luxurious interior selections in this new build are punctuated with a rich blue color palette accented with layers of textural and interesting decor.

When asked about her favorite project, KAT answers with an almost giddy excitement, “The next one that I do is my favorite.” Perhaps the real magic is KAT’s passion for what she does, and that moment she gets to show a client their transformed home and say, “TA DA!”

SITTING PRETTY WITH NATHALIE CLAIRE-LIMA

SASSY CHAIRS

A little bit of fun and escapism in our environments is always a welcome addition, a functional item with the essence of another era, a touch of glamor and a hint of luxury, can make us smile from day to day.

Nathalie Claire-Lima was born and raised in France and will always have a place in her heart for the style and historical designs of her childhood milieu.  Her fascination with chairs began at an early age, viewing them as characters, each with their own individual personalities.

An entrepreneurial spirit and the onset of covid in 2020 motivated Nathalie to rediscover her creativity. After signing up for an online upholstery course, she completely reworked and reupholstered a chair she already owned, and this became the catalyst for a whole new business.

Pairing sumptuous velvets with the most exquisite prints

Pinks, and florals look great with a luxe gold paint finish

Sassy Chairs are reminiscent of those found at enchanted tea parties, in Victorian gardens and elegant parlors, fashioned with sublime velvets, colorful chintz and opulent damasks, trimmed with pom poms, finely corded edges, detailed braids and profusions of 3d flowers, turning what once was tired and worn into some very chic chairs indeed.

Nathalie designs from her Magnolia workshop and has a long list of clients from near and far. Working on commissions, as well as on her own collection of “found and needy chairs”, her process involves getting to know the chair and feel its personality.  “I sit with my chairs and feel their story, and how they want to be beautiful again”, she tells me.  Buying chairs with good bones from auction houses, and sourcing distinctive fabrics from around the globe, she marries the two together for her bespoke designs.  Recent finds include hand embroidered fabric from Mexico, hand loomed fabric from Greece, where she met with the elderly weaver, and an array of fabrics from England, France and Turkey.

Nathalie has an extensive collection of one-off designs in her Sassy Chairs Etsy store. These include glamorous chairs designed specifically for weddings, perfect for photographs, and can later be situated in the newlywed’s home as a meaningful souvenir of their big day, these elegant pieces work well for quinceaneras too.  Other significant chairs include two in the style of Louis XVI, boasting upholstered panels starring creative images of Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, iconic design meets iconic women, popping bubblegum for a modern twist!

Nathalie is currently working on a series of 12 dining chairs, a matching set, however, each chair has its own unique foible, retaining an individual personality. “I love the process of working with clients and the collaboration of our ideas,” says Nathalie, she talks about the joy of revamping inherited chairs into something exclusive, quirky, and once again, loved.

As well as being available via Etsy, Sassy Chairs can occasionally be found at local vintage and artisan fairs, Nathalie will be present at the upcoming “Shop ‘til You Drop” Marketplace at The Berry Center, of Northwest Houston on September 9th.

beautiful,” said Jen. “They’re usually handpainted and often thrown out when the show closes. That always killed me, but they are too expensive to store. That night, I called my friend who rents sets and asked for his trash.”

He answered with 600 pounds of backdrop fabric that Jen’s parents kept in a storage unit in California while the idea for Scenery Bags percolated.

TONY STAGE FANS ‘WEAR BROADWAY’ AT THE ALLEY

Ask that stylish fashionista at the Alley Theatre who she’s wearing, and her reply might be “Broadway.”

That is, if she’s holding a “Break a leg” clutch or sporting chic earrings from Scenery Bags, the clever brainchild of Jennifer Wheeler Kahn, a resident of The Woodlands, who designs purses, baubles and other must-haves that are created with “retired” stage materials.

“I am my target audience,” says Jen, a former Broadway stage manager who is married to Brandon Kahn, the Alley’s general manager and a 2002 graduate of The Woodlands High School. Brandon hopes his wife will start a men’s line that includes pocket squares for him.

Jen says, “Each item is handmade and comes with a tag that tells you the show it is from and the number you have out of the limited collection.”

The concept for Scenery Bags came to Jen in 2015 when she took a road trip from the Big Apple to Maine and stopped at a store that sold handbags made from the discarded sails of sailboats.

“Immediately, I thought of doing something like this with (back)drops because they’re

Jen grew up in San Diego and began dancing lessons when she was 2.

“I grew up on Danny Kaye and Gene Kelly movies,” she says. “Musical theater became all that my sister and I did, but I decided I wanted to produce theater.”

At the University of Southern California, Jen “learned a little about everything” regarding theater as she pursued a bachelor of fine arts in stage management. After graduating in 2004, she moved to New York City and landed work immediately.

Meanwhile, Brandon had arrived in The Woodlands as a third grader in the 90’s. The native of Hollywood, Fla. was an all-around athlete who discovered his life’s calling when he enrolled in a theater class at The Woodlands High School, thinking it would be “an easy A.”

Next thing you know, Brandon was starring onstage in There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom and playing the title role in Peter Pan. “I flew and everything,” he says.

More fascinating, though, was the technical side of theater, and Brandon proudly recalls stage-managing an abridged version of The Miracle Worker all the way to the state finals in University Interscholastic League one-act play competition.

Next, he studied theater at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, N.C.

celebrating Brandon’s 26th birthday. “We had everything in common.”

In 2017, Jen was pregnant with the couple’s first child, when she finally found the time to devote to launching Scenery Bags.

“It became my maternity leave side hustle,” she says, delighted that Scenery Bags became an overnight success once photos hit theater websites and Instagram. Word spread like wildfire as Broadway fans craved a bag that preserved the magical memories they had of shows like Phantom of the Opera, Dear Evan Hansen and Hairspray.

Stage fans also cheered that at least 10 percent of the proceeds from each purchase benefit the Theatre Development Fund (TDF), a program that introduces stage magic to middle and high school students, including sending them to Broadway and off-Broadway performances.

In October 2018, the Kahns moved from New York to The Woodlands for Brandon to take the reins as general manager of the Alley Theatre. Along with their family, which now includes sons Hudson, 6, and Judah, 4, Jen’s company took up residence in their home in The Village of Alden Bridge.

“Everything is made in Houston,” says Jen.

with sparkling letters. In the bags line are mementos from Broadway show that include Fiddler on the Roof, SpongeBob SquarePants and Ain’t Too Proud.

Accessories such as necklaces, keychains, earrings and bangles were assembled from the flooring of productions of The King and I, Mean Girls, Beetlejuice and other hits. The highest price is $110.

A new “home line” was launched with a 5-inch microphone design cut from the plexiglass back wall of a recent Broadway show, Freestyle Love Supreme.

“Jen always has new plans up her sleeve,” said Brandon.

Experience Shoal

Shoal is an ongoing, experiential artwork featuring a choreographed, interactive light show. Located on Restaurant Row in Hughes Landing, this is the latest addition to one of the largest outdoor collections in the country.

Sound and Vision

Visiting the new “Shoal” installation on a quiet balmy Sunday night I was captivated by its tidal ambience. I strolled beneath the softly changing orbs of light and listened to their soundscape, composed of harmonies which are reminiscent of early electronic synths, white noise and womb vibrations. The effect was calming and meditative, with gentle tonal and rhythmic changes to the flowing soundwaves, as they transmitted through “Shoal’s” many currents. I left feeling energized and relaxed at the same time, ready for the week ahead.

I spoke with Liam Birtless, Squidsoup’s creative director, to learn more about this exciting new immersive experience recently installed in Hughes Landing.

The “Shoal” immersive art experience talks to us on a different level, light as a medium has a unique sensory effect and evokes contrasting emotions which differ to those we feel when viewing regular sculpture and other 2D artforms. “Shoal” presents an interactive light encounter where we occupy the same space and moments, the changing sequences of the lights, colors and sounds they emit.  “It’s about seeing things in a different light, looking at ourselves, each other and our environments differently” explains Birtless, “Squidsoup’s work in extended reality and mixed reality, it’s like placing a digital layer over the world and creating a new immersive space”.

Our brains see light and dark before color, different colored lights are used in numerous environments to create ambient effects. The sounds we hear are composed from Squidgroups bank of their own collected soundbytes, recordings of the human voice, guitars, minimalistic

electronic soundwaves and other noises from nature. “Shoal” presents 750 suspended orbs working together, creating chords from individual hummed notes, all working in unison. Sound and light are transmitted via wifi from separate orbs, connecting each one and making it “sing” to the others, which in turn, follow in a metachronal rhythm, a bit like a stadium wave.

The definition of shoal is a large number of fish swimming together, in this case, it references a community of people interacting as a collective group of energy, light moving through space, swimming, weaving and flowing freely between objects. The suspended installation begins formally and develops and branches out until it reaches the area closest to the water in a more natural, organic formation.

Squidsoup has installations across the globe, and exhibits include locations Kew Gardens, Burning Man, Glastonbury, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Norway.

“Shoal is the latest in a series of works that use our own system of hundreds of points of light and sound to create new

forms of immersive and ambient works, and was designed specifically for Hughes Landing,” stated Anthony Rowe, Founder of Squidsoup. “We are honored and delighted to present the work to the residents and visitors of The Woodlands.“

Public art in The Woodlands began to appear in the late 1970s with placement throughout the community and this continues as an important community legacy to this day. The Woodlands now offers one of the largest outdoor art collections in the nation. Shoal is a welcome addition to the existing works in the Hughes Landing area, which include the art bench collection, “Acrobatica” by Rafael Barrios, Firefly, by John Clement and Wind Waves by Yvonne Domenge.

“Shoal is a new interactive piece that adds to the diversity of our expansive art collection, reinforces the power of art in placemaking—a fundamental component of The Woodlands’ original vision for the community,” said Jim Carman, President of the Houston Region for The Howard Hughes Corporation. squidsoup.org

THE TALENT BEHIND 97 MINUTES

Enjoy our chat with Dr. Pavan Grover, a beloved Houston-based spinal surgeon who doubles as a screenwriter, co-producer, and actor

“It’s almost impossible to break into Hollywood,” says Dr. Pavan Grover, a well-known minimally-invasive spinal surgeon and pain specialist in Houston. Yet over the past two decades, he’s done just that. Grover has been fascinated with films since the age of six and credits Bollywood as a major influence. He began writing as a hobby and then professionally with his first screenplay, Unspeakable (2002). Dennis Hopper signed on and turned it into a film, with Grover appearing in the cast. Next, Grover co-produced Odd Thomas (2013) and wrote, co-produced, and acted in 97 Minutes (2023).

BEHIND THE SCENES OF 97 MINUTES

The action thriller, set aboard a hijacked 767, was released in theaters in June and launches on Hulu this September.

The movie, directed by Timo Vuorensola, boasts a high-caliber cast, with Alec Baldwin and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers in two leading roles. Baldwin and Grover met coincidentally at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and formed a connection. Despite the controversy of the Rust movie incident and pressure to drop Baldwin, Grover stuck with the actor. “I don’t believe in abandoning people at their lowest times, and I think this is one of Alec’s best performances in the past few years,” he says.

Despite Covid and the logistics of filming in London, working on set was an incredible experience. Grover appears in the cast alongside Baldwin and Rhys-Myers, and states, “I loved Jonathan’s acting. He was amazing in that role, came on set so prepared, and threw himself completely into it.”

THE RED CARPET EVENT

On June 11, an invitation-only crowd of 300 appeared at Star Cinema Grill in Richmond for a red-carpet event and movie screening. Attendees from The Woodlands, Houston, and the Fort Bend area mingled in a mix of Bollywood and Hollywood apparel and were photographed in front of an amazing step and repeat backdrop featuring the 767.

All celebrated Grover for envisioning 97 Minutes and ushering his dream onto the big screen.

Our Very Own Teacups and Tadpoles

Traditional and Worldly Styles for the Kiddos

When Kristen Byrnes moved to The Woodlands in 2015 from Singapore, she was easing out of a career in finance and business, and into life as a Texas stay-at-home mom.  She never could have guessed that just a few years later these skills would allow her to embrace her new community as a small business owner at the most precious local children’s boutique.

Teacups and Tadpoles was the sweet and beautiful brainchild of another local mom in 2004.  By the spring of 2018, she had graduated to the role of grandmother and was ready to retire from her helm at the boutique.  At this time Kristen’s daughter was nearly 4, her son nearly 2, and just six weeks into the pregnancy of baby number three.  Not the perfect time to buy a business but it was an opportunity that wouldn’t wait, so the Byrnes family jumped at the chance.  Although her husband Steve graduated from The Woodlands High School, Kristen grew up in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania

and was excited about becoming a more active member of The Woodlands community.  After a brief closure and a few renovations, Teacups and Tadpoles reopened in early August 2018.

A remarkable characteristic of The Woodlands is that its residents hail from all over the country and all over the world.  This allows the team at Teacups and Tadpoles to dabble in fashions meant for varying tastes and perspectives.  Southern sweetness is embraced with pinks and blues, smocking, bonnets and monograms.  Those with contemporary preferences will be encouraged to find earthy neutrals, sassy sparkles, and clever tees.

Always age appropriate, the store still manages to offer something for everyone, carrying from preemie sizes up to 10 for girls and 6 for boys. With books, unique toys, accessories, and baby gear lining the well-stocked shelves, Teacups and Tadpoles can be a one-stop-shop for all your gifting needs.

Rising to the Occasion

Rise Soufflé Invites The Woodlands to Savor Its Bistro Atmosphere and Cuisine

A soufflé is not heavy. In fact, it is impossibly light. The dish’s primary ingredient, a simple base of egg whites that have been whipped to a soft peak, belies the actual knowledge and exactitude involved in creating these little masterpieces, says Jack Giegerich, general manager of Rise Soufflé in The Woodlands. Ingredients must be combined at the correct temperature, says Jack, and the ramekins in

which the soufflés are baked and served are another crucial component. The ones used at Rise are custom-made, as are the ovens, which are imported from France.

The precision of the entire soufflé-baking endeavor is on display every day in the restaurant’s “kitchen theater” which gives patrons a full view. Under the keen eye of Executive Chef Cameron Achee, the action is fluid and seamless, as bevies of individual soufflés go into and out of the ovens, then head to the tables of eagerly waiting guests.

CHEF’S SELECTION | FOOD + BEVERAGE

The raspberry soufflé is a popular choice from the sweet soufflé menu.

Savory soufflé options at Rise offer something for every taste. Among them, a delicate crab soufflé, hearty ham and Gruyère, and an escargot soufflé, whose rich, garlicky broth mingles with the billowy, eggy exterior in tantalizing ways. Other creative takes include southwestern chicken, herb and spicy sausage, and corn and serrano iterations. Outside of the soufflé realm, the menu includes French bistro classics like house-smoked salmon, salad Nicoise with seared Ahi tuna, and steak with roasted fingerling potatoes and haricot vert.

The wine menu features domestic favorites and a well-curated selection of French offerings that will lure the uninitiated to experiment. Flights of French red, white, and sparkling wines serve as a gateway to choosing just the right bottle.

For dessert, a seasonal fruit soufflé is an excellent choice, as is a classic chocolate or Grand Marnier. The bread pudding soufflé gives the version served at Commander’s Palace in New Orleans a run for its money. Or try the crème brulée—its crisp outer shell and creamy interior pair well with a freshly pulled espresso.

The restaurant’s interior is filled with pieces imported from Europe, thoughtfully curated down to the cloth napkins and antique silverware. Dimly lit with softly twinkling lights, the rounded walls and bar are intentionally designed with no sharp edges. The spacious, enclosed patio looks out onto a dense thicket of trees, an “oh-so-Woodlands-y” view that convinced Rise CEO Chris Florczak the location in Creekside Park West was just the spot. “We want our guests to stay awhile, to experience the atmosphere of a leisurely French bistro, not stuffy or formal.”

And as to the big soufflé question: Spoon or fork? Either, says Jack. “Whatever is most effective for you in picking up every bit of flavor!”

The atmosphere at Rise is casual French bistro, down to the imported dishes, silverware and napkins. Artisanal cheese selections

The Trends Toward Subtle Luxury

DITCH THE FLASHY LOGOS AND EXPLORE THE ELOQUENCE OF THE “QUIET LUXURY” FASHION REVOLUTION

With flaunting logos blatantly displayed on celebrities like billboards, the idea behind a carefully crafted and elegant look is left to fall between the cracks. Spectators admire the logo before they see the style. Now, fashion innovators have taken a new approach to their design methodology and are creating unique styles with the most straightforward items.  From color, design cut, and desired attitude, style opens a world of possibilities. Yet, style is no new concept. In fact, every decade, a new style era takes its place on the throne. Currently, a trend called “quiet luxury” also known as “old money” has the fashion industry in a chokehold. These “old money" styles include basic and modest outfit cuts typically in a very neutral or earthy color scheme. Styles such as these are used to create a clean and well-groomed appearance.

SELF CARE | STYLE + BEAUTY
66

Current fashion innovators like Sofia Richie Grainge are taking the internet by storm through her lesser-known brands which display a simple, natural, and minimalistic look. When discussing the rising fashion trend , Forbes says, “If we were to be completely technical about the concept, it’s about maximizing cost per wear without sacrificing elegance.” Perhaps an extensive reason why this trend is skyrocketing is due to the cost-effectiveness of the style pieces. People are able to buy dupes at places like boutiques or Amazon without displaying obvious logos. Hence, the ability to create luxury without breaking the bank quickly rises.

What constitutes itself as “quiet luxury”, one might ask, and how can it be achieved? Rising trends on apps like TikTok describe something known as a capsule wardrobe where only a few clothing items are used in order to mix and match large varieties of outfits. Some examples are simple, patternless shirts, jeans, body suits, and other neutral and subtle versatile pieces. Less clothing options create less chaos and an easier outfit of the day. Celebrities who take “quiet luxury” to heart are Sofia Richie Grainge, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Mary-Kate and Ashely Olsen. In fact, the Olsen twins created The Row, a line of clothing that is timeless and perfect for a luxurious yet simplistic wardrobe. Along with The Row, brands such as Loro Piana, Max Mara, Brunello Cucinelli, and Erdem embody the clean aesthetic. Simple linen pants over a form-fitting body suit are not only sleek and elegant but also comfortable for a day out running errands. Page Magazine says it best when describing “quiet luxury”: “It is not about shouting about luxury and being bold but rather more toned-down elevated basics.”

Fashion wouldn’t be as luxurious without the balance of hair and makeup to solidify the look. Just like the outfits, hair, and makeup should also embody the clean, minimalistic aesthetic. By finding a line of skincare products that work best for your skin, minimal makeup should enhance the natural glow rather than alter it. Celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Bella Hadid, and, of course, Sofia Richie Grainge give a glowing and clean look that accentuates their features and perfectly blends with their style. Often, they opt for nude or a matte makeup look instead of a caked-on foundation, false eyelashes, and bold and daring colors. Page Magazine says to use “cream products over powders as it creates a more realistic glow on the skin.” As for hair, celebs are chasing complementary colors and styles rather than the latest hair craze. Some styles include a simple headband, bows, clips, slicked-back knots or ponytails, or even gentle waves. Hair and makeup should complete your style rather than compete with it. Unlike other fashion trends, “quiet luxury” will continue to be a timeless form of art.
