Cool, cool summer!

Dear Readers,

I hope you are reading this on a sandy beach with the seagulls flying over head and the sound of the waves lulling you into a peaceful siesta in the sun. If not, we hope you enjoy this issue filled with stories full of adventure wherever you are.

Consider this your summer reading! I hope you enjoy the articles about family travel, chasing your family roots in the United Kingdom, and even chasing Nessie in Scotland. We dug up some unique vacation ideas that will get you off the beaten path including how to plan a baseball stadium tour of the US, houseboat rentals on a beautiful lake and even vacationing on a luxury yacht! We also provide "out of the box" concepts for the kiddos since they are home for 3 months - a mom's Survival Guide if you will.

I actually wrote a story myself on finding my way back to England after the death of my father and how I was able to share my childhood memories with my own children.

Whether you are on a beach, a road trip, a hiatus from work, an escape from routine or a trip down memory lane, we hope you enjoy the days of summer. Don't forget the simple pleasures like the old school backyard BBQ, frozen fruity treats, outdoor picnics by the pool or at the park and last but not least reading our "Summer Adventure" issue.

Hang loose, stay cool and bon voyage!

One of the many picturesque pubs in the village of Lymm.

UK OFF THE BEATEN PATH

When most people think about a trip overseas, Paris, London and Rome come to mind first. I see social media posts filled with obligatory photos in front of the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace and London Bridge. If Ireland is on the itinerary, tourists will flock to Dublin or rush to “kiss the Blarney Stone,” but there is so much more to see if you view the world through the eyes of the locals.

I was born in the tiny village of Lymm in Cheshire, England, then moved to Wales, and eventually the States after my mother remarried. I spent my childhood summers visiting my father at our home in Lymm, nestled on a cobblestone road within walking distance to the village. We vacationed in Abererch and Abersoch, Wales. Not known for its tropical beaches or consistent beachy weather (actually quite the opposite), we would literally chase the sun and my father would yell, “Look blue trousers” which were patches of blue in the sky. We would jump in the car and drive toward the sun!

I have vivid memories of staying in a caravan by the sea each summer; visiting The Ship, a local pub for crab sandwiches; and my dad cooking spicy

sausages for breakfast before long, windy walks on the beach. My father, a storyteller at heart, would describe intricate details of every landmark wherever our drives took us. These summers continued into my early twenties, until sadly my father passed away suddenly at a young age. I never went back.

When I married, I decided that, after 13 years away, it was time to go home. Perhaps chasing family roots, I took my new husband back to Lymm, the place that, to this day, still feels like home. And when we had children, I took them there, too.

Arriving into Manchester, England on our first trip as a family, we spent time with family in different parts of North England and planned a trip to South Ireland to visit my cousin. We flew from Manchester to County Cork and rented a farmhouse in the seaside town of Clonakilty, West Cork. My jaw quite literally dropped when I first arrived in Ireland. The fields of green that rolled down to the rugged sea and rocky cliffs below afforded some of the most majestic views I have ever seen. Days were spent enjoying trips to the nearby, breathtaking, coastal towns of the Emerald Isle.

Majestic views of the Atlantic from Sherkin Island

Urquhart Castle holds many secrets on the banks of Loch Ness, Inverness

The first day we had lunch in Glandore Bay overlooking the sea peppered with sailboats. The kids enjoyed exploring the historical megalithic site of Drombeg Stone Circle, also known locally as The Druid’s Altar. The site, a small, axial stone circle, is located on the edge of a rocky terrace overlooking the sea about 1.5 miles east of Glandore in County Cork.

Another day was spent touring beautiful Sherkin Island, a 10-minute ferry ride from the small fishing port of Baltimore. The 3-mile-long island boasts colorful landscapes and rugged Atlantic views from the hilltops. We enjoyed lunch overlooking the sea at The Jolly Roger, a wonderful, traditional Irish Pub.

My favorite spot on the southern coast, Inchydoney Blue Flag Beach near Clonakilty, is a Wild Atlantic Way Discovery Point. Inchydoney Beach is often named Ireland’s favorite beach by international tourists on TripAdvisor and is described as “glorious and unspoiled.”

A few years later, we flew from Houston to London to stay with friends. This was the first time I had actually been a tourist in my own country! The sights and sounds of regal London were majestic. Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle did not disappoint, and, of course, we took the obligatory pictures!

My plan was to visit Scotland after London because it was a place I had never been and my daughter absolutely loved castles and the mystery of Loch Ness. CONTINUED >

"Obligatory London tourist" photo!

After two days in London we were off to the Highlands of Scotland, flying from Heathrow to Inverness. It was time to chase Nessie and my daughter was leading the mission to Loch Ness!

When I planned this trip, people asked if I was serious about going to Loch Ness, as if it was a fictional place only read about in children’s books. Looking at a map of the area, I found a pin dropped away from all the other accommodations, six miles west of Inverness, on the shores of the Beauly Firth. The Bunchrew House, a historic Scottish

mansion and now hotel, is located near the NC500, Ireland’s “Route 66” and a spectacular drive that winds itself around the Northern Highlands coast roads. The hotel still looked like a castle and took my breath away. The first night, my kids, playing in the tidepools, dug up a 150-year-old torpedo bottle with a rounded bottom, and the groundskeeper washed it off for them. It is now our most treasured souvenir.

On to Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle, which illustrated wild, natural beauty and 1,000 years of history. The castle ruins give you a peek into the Highlands and a glimpse of medieval life on the banks of Loch Ness. My 9-year-old daughter chimed into the tour guide’s commentary, offering her own facts, in case he missed a detail! Her brother was quick to let us know he could not see, nor did he believe, in the Loch Ness monster as he looked through the magnifying viewfinder. That, of course, did not sit well with his sister, and an argument ensued!

My most cherished memory of that trip was returning to my beloved Abererch Sands with my children, back to my own childhood summer spot. We visited the old caravan site where I spent many summers with my father. My daughter ran up the sand dunes and down the beach and danced along the edge of the sea as I watched from above. It was quite the healing, full circle moment. At the same time, I was sad but knew my father watched from above, wishing he could join us for a crab sandwich at The Ship.

Whether a short trip away from home or an adventure to connect with your heritage, travel opens your eyes and heart. Memories that are made and shared last a lifetime and sometimes beyond.

“Everything Is Nonsense?”

If you attended the recent Market Street Art Festival, you may have noticed a brand-new artist in town exhibiting a striking collection of abstract paintings.

Nathianiel Votano paints under the pseudonym “Mr. Nonsense”, a nom de plume which was recommended for him as his x-box gaming name at age 10. The name, however, was incredibly well assigned as it now expresses his observations on his art practice, an oxymoron where of course, everything isn’t nonsense, but full of very well considered perceptions, this art is such that it makes us stop, think and think some more. Our first impressions of the bright, vibrant abstracts may give the impression that they are playful and fun, but behind lies a much deeper awareness and message in his work, which is steeped in symbolism and illusion. If you are fortunate

enough to talk art with the artist, you will discover his passion and drive, his perfectionism and enthusiasm for what he creates.

Initial inspirations to paint include New York pop artist Keith Haring, other influences include artificial realist painter George Condo and Pablo Picasso. These influences are apparent in the work of Mr. Nonsense, with the addition of his dynamic individual approach. Favoring acrylic, oil and spray paint, this self-taught artist is producing powerful work where cubism meets pop art. Experimenting with creating a substrate using a poured paint technique which he manipulates with a homemade brush, made from paint stirrers, several smaller brushes and Velcro, this self-invented brush is ideal for creating subtle gradients and ombre finishes which are used

as backgrounds. Clean hard edges and intentional bold lines work together with faded gradients in modern day neons and vibrant solid colors, resulting in compelling portraits, figurative works and noteworthy abstract pieces.

With a background in nursing, Votano is a natural “people person”, and is instinctively empathic to the personalities of others, this is portrayed in his fragmented portraits which represent our innermost thoughts compared to the way we are potentially perceived by others. “Looks are important but overrated”.

“Have you ever looked in a mirror and not thought something?”  He asks. Seeing ourselves as others see us can be complicated and near impossible, most of us tend to shape shift to the adaptations of different situations and social groups, so we’re not always the same person on the outside.

His new work explores this concept of psychological cubism, where emotions are presented in the painting “Inside Outside”. Named after the Disney movie, “Inside Out”, this painting depicts the reflection of his subject looking in a mirror, their innermost thoughts and feelings on one side, and their multiple personas on the other, one side is smiling and the other is distraught. The bold colors reflect this contrast, cool and calm blues and greens on the “outside” and red, fragmented shapes on the “inside”, where multiple eyes stare and judge as harshly as one can only judge oneself.

“Déjà Vu”, a black and white piece is a companion work for “Sonder”, being negatives of each other, representing the inside and outside personas. In “Déjà vu”, the composition focuses on a split mirror image, bold, black painted lines on a white background, strong, precise, lost and found lines in varying thicknesses create depth, shapes and shadows, the disconnected crowd, lost in their own beings. Included in the same oeuvre is “Sonder”, the title inspired by the “Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows” by John Koenig, defined as – “Sonder: The profound feeling of realizing that everyone, including strangers passing in the street, has a life as complex as one’s own, which they are constantly living despite one’s personal lack of awareness of it.”. “Sonder” is painted with white on black, loose lines, connecting with each other, overlapping with a friendlier, softer feel. Perhaps one depicts our personalities during the day compared to nighttime? Perhaps they represent our innermost and outermost selves? Perhaps they are attributed to the left and right sides of the brain?

Votano is available for commissioned work, he interviews his subjects in person in order to familiarize himself with their personality,  he then assigns suitable colors, shapes and techniques to create a personal abstract portrait representing their individual characteristics, inside and outside.

More information about Nathaniel and Mr. Nonsense including his involvement in “conscious lyricism” songwriting, can be accessed via instagram -  @madebymrnonsense.

The #1 Ranked Four Seasons Here in Houston

A GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

There’s nothing better than opening your car door to an experience filled with smiles, warm welcomes, and comfortable beds. And when vacation is over and the real world comes back to greet you, you know it was time well spent when all you can think about is returning to that place of happy memories.

The Four Seasons location in Houston, Texas, has been named the #1 Luxury Hotel in America. But guests have said that what makes this spot so special is beyond the overall atmosphere of the hotel, rather the experience within it.

A recent visitor who stayed with her family on Mother’s Day, had nothing but positives to say about her stay. From beginning to end, she shared that the staff members were friendly, accommodating, and extremely welcoming.

Butler said, “From the time that you get out of your car, the guys at the valet feel like they’re your neighbors.”

The interior design of the lobby gives you a warm, inviting vibe, and felt like home. Unlike other luxury hotels, usually adorned with a clean, white, marbled interior, Butler said that she felt as if she had been teleported back to the

1960’s when she was greeted with beautiful walls of leather-bound books and leather furniture.

The resort opened April 15, 1982 and in 2022, after celebrating 40 years of business, it underwent a multi-year transformation. And with this restyling, came significant improvements and additions. Including renovations to guest rooms and suites, specialty suites, and residential suites, and the addition of the Toro Toro restaurant, Bandista speakeasy, and Kringler perfume store.

Tom Segesta, the hotel’s general manager, said that the multi-year evolution has immensely benefited the resort.

“For 40 years, we’ve been a gathering place in Houston, where people could come together for a meal, a celebration, or a stay. This multi-year transformation gave us all the elements to become a true downtown destination -- with incredible offerings, experiences, and facilities for everyone to enjoy. Four Seasons Hotel Houston is completely transformed and better than ever.”

In fact, The Four Seasons in Houston is home to one of the few, true, speakeasies in Texas. Bandista is the newest addition to the hotel, and it is truly reminiscent of the 1920s. Guests are taken back through a secret entrance into a beautiful, dazzling lounge, where highly trained mixologists create beautiful drinks. Not to mention, this room is a liquor connoisseur’s dream with huge glass displays of the most beautiful, old bottles.

However, it seems the new Toro Toro restaurant is all the rave. This is an award-winning pan-Latin steakhouse that has so many delicious options on its menu, from a short rib taco appetizer to a whole 52 oz tomahawk steak. Included with the experience is a ceviche bar and a variety of desserts. Better yet, Toro Toro is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The experience doesn’t stop there. The resort also has a beautiful outdoor pool. Butler commented that the pool was “a perfect blend of metropolitan and beach”. Guests are shaded by towering skyscrapers that glimmer with city lights in the night. During the day, the warm air and lively pool are reminiscent of a tropical beach vacation. It’s the perfect location for families, couples, and friends.

Cabana Room with access to pool and bar area

At the end of the day, tired from all the activities, nothing is better than falling asleep in a comfortable, warm bed. Butler, who stayed in a cabana room during her stay, said that it was the perfect space to rent during her family function, as her guests had easy access to the pool and the room. Further, she talked very enthusiastically about the beds.

Butler said, “I choose The Four Seasons every time because I get the best sleep in their beds.”

The Four Seasons in Bora Bora French Polynesia is another hotel location worthy of highlighting. For those who are looking for a destination vacation, this may be a perfect place for you. Brad Packer, the director of communications and public relations, shared the reason why he believes residents in the Houston area should be made aware of the Bora Bora location, despite its distance.

“Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora is often called “The Pearl of the Pacific” - it is a true private island paradise in the heart of French Polynesia. With 108 overwater bungalow suites (27 with private plunge pools) and seven beachfront villa estates, the accommodations are unmatched. There are four openair restaurants, a cathedral-like spa, a lagoon sanctuary with three marine biologists, tennis, an array of cultural and recreational experiences, and more. The resort also boasts Bora Bora’s best views of majestic Mount Otemanu, the volcanic peak that rises from the famous turquoise lagoon. This resort is incredible for romantic celebrations, family getaways, and “bucket list” travel.

Whether you are planning on staying local in the Houston area or looking to go on an adventure to another country, The Four Seasons has some of the most perfect vacation spots in the world.

Embrace the Sun, Protect Your Skin

PRIMO ADVICE ON SAVING YOUR SKIN FROM THE SUMMER HEAT

Summer is here, and with the storm of heat and humidity coming this way, it is important to take a proactive approach to preventing skin damage. Dr. Rukmini Rednam, board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, and Crystal Gardiner, licensed medical esthetician for Dr. Rednam with My Houston Surgeons, answered some questions for The Woodlands City Lifestyle on how to keep your skin healthy this season.

HOW DOES THE TEXAS SUN AFFECT OUR RISK OF SKIN DAMAGE?

Crystal - “Summers in Texas are super hot, and the most damaging time of year. People are also spending more time outside. The rays can be very intense the majority of the day...10 am-4 pm tend to be the most damaging time of day. All of that UV exposure can cause skin cancer and cell damage which can be deadly.”

Dr. Rednam - “Also, spending a lot of time in the water during the summer reflects the UV rays. This results in double exposure which I

don’t think most people are aware of. You will want to reapply your sunscreen multiple times when you’re in the water.”

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE SKIN DAMAGE?

Crystal - “Damage in the skin can be identified by hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, sun spots, wrinkling of the skin, as well as redness.”

EXPERT HELP | HEALTH + WELLNESS
“Skin damage and aging can often be confused but can really compound each other. Skin damage often presents as premature aging.”

Dr. Rednam - “Skin damage and aging can often be confused but can really compound each other. Skin damage often presents as premature aging.”

ARE TREATMENTS LIKE FACIALS, DERMAPLANING AND MICRONEEDLING ABLE TO UNDO DAMAGE? ARE THERE ANY NEW PROCEDURES THAT WORK BETTER THAN OTHERS?

Crystal - “All of the above can help with undoing the damage. Bottomline, a skin care regimen is needed as a priority. Pigment inhibitors, retinol, and SPF are nonnegotiable starting points. Sciton Halo and BBL (Broadband Light— which uses technology where light is sent to the deepest layer to help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and helps the skin to fight signs of aging) treatments can accelerate results.”

Dr. Rednam - “I wouldn’t say it’s about undoing, it’s more about repairing and turning back time followed by a really

good skincare regimen to prevent future damage. Like most things, healthy skin requires maintenance and tune-ups.”

WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD WE ALL BE USING FOR THE HOTTEST SUMMER MONTHS?

Crystal - “SPF is non-negotiable. Using a pigment inhibitor, retinol, and Vitamin C/antioxident serum is a good base regimen. Also, wear a sun hat, sunglasses, and stay in the shade. Always reapply your sunscreen!”

Dr. Rednam - “I agree with Crystal, especially on wearing a quality sunscreen. I like Elta MD’s sunscreen as it’s light and breathable. A favorite of mine is their tinted version which sometimes can replace the need for foundation. For Vitamin C, SkinCeuticals has a really great serum, and Alastin has a great retinol. We also love SkinBetter’s Broad Spectrum Sunscreen Compacts. Regardless, every product you choose should be individualized to your needs and skin type.”

Texas Summer

A few tips for making your home safe for storm season

Here in east Texas the weather can be unpredictable and unyielding. Storms are often the cause of sudden and unexpected tragedies, a lesson that natives to the Houston area are well acquainted with. Frank Billingsley, KPRC Chief Meteorologist, is predicting that six hurricanes will be hitting the Houston area this storm season, and everyone needs to prepare for the rising dangers that specifically impact our area.

Being surrounded by tall pine trees, our homes are at significant risk here in The Woodlands and Montgomery County.  Strong hurricane winds snap branches from trees, which fall and crash down on homes and cars, our roads flood with murky rivers of water, and backyard pools are targets for lightning strikes. There are numerous ways to avoid harm during the summer storm season and keep your families safe. Here are a few suggestions to immediately alleviate danger before the hurricane hits your area:

• Prepare a storage of unperishable goods, toilet paper, portable chargers, generators, and day-to-day necessities—including medication.

• Make sure to be informed about when hurricane season starts, ends, and what days are predicted to have severe weather.

Storm waters and trees down in East Texas

• When the storm passes, avoid flood waters, as they do contain harmful bacteria—such as E. Coli and Salmonella—from sewage, live, damaged landline wires, and snakes.

It is possible your home may incur damage, specifically to your roof. A common misconception is that roofing is waterproof. Your home roof is a water-resistant shedding system that requires routine maintenance. According to Brian Finley, the owner of Roof Concepts Construction, the reason a lot of people endure extreme damages during storms is because of their lack of consistent care to their roofs. He recommends that every homeowner have a twice a year routine maintenance checkup, so that damage can be

found before storms increase the risk of danger. Further, he stresses the importance of cleaning out home gutters, as a blockage could have severe consequences.

Most of the homes in the area were built with lower grade shingles, which deteriorate after wear and tear. And, due to their cheap and flimsy nature, they don’t last homeowners long. Further, rubber pipe boots break down over time, leaving gaps between pipe and roof and allowing water to seep inside. Routine maintenance allows these issues to be fixed long before they cause permanent damage to your home or the people within.

Overall, with proper safety knowledge, everyone has the possibility to make it through storm season in east Texas happy, healthy, and storm ready.

THE JOHN COOPER ART BARN, BOB MOSIER, STRUCTURE AND SCULPTURE, PAST AND FUTURE
40
ARTICLE BY ANNETTE PALMER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNETTE PALMER, HEIDI MILLER, AND JOHN COOPER SCHOOL ARCHIVES

The John Cooper Art Barn is undoubtedly an important piece of The Woodlands history. Nestled independently at the back of the school, from the beginning, the barn has been a hive of creativity, a beating heart brimming with curiosity, inspiration, discovery and experimentation.

The John Cooper School was opened in 1988 to just over 1200 “pioneers”. The Woodlands Founder Mr George Mitchell, who had reserved 43 acres of land for such an educational facility, cut the ribbon and the school was officially open.

The art barn has a soul of its own, perhaps because it stands alone, perhaps because it’s been used to promote independent thinking and originality since it was built. Opening the doors of the grey, cedar clad barn, there is a surge of artistic excitement and a motivation to create.  This inspiration continues and builds from room to room, each with its own purpose and personality. Remnants of past artistic endeavors

can be seen high on the shelves which stretch all the way to the ceiling, boxes, drawers and racks full of useful, artful components and collected bits and bobs line the walls, paintbrushes, tools, sawdust, art glass, metal, rope, and an abundance of countless, ambitious works in progress.  When the rooms are busy with students there is a buzz of energy, a busy, industrious enthusiasm, an excitement of working in the arts, an expressive, forward-thinking intensity.

Visual Arts Chair Bob Mosier has been at the John Cooper School since 1999, and this dynamic creative atmosphere is his doing. Over the years he has taught everything from drawing fundamentals, to painting, fiber arts, ceramics, printmaking, photography, sculpture and digital arts, to name but a few. “Art is about teaching you to think” he states, “a good teacher shouldn’t be sweeping every stone from the path, we learn from our mistakes and experiences. It is about problem solving skills and nonlinear

thinking”.  His approach is not one of teaching art but teaching techniques, “art is something from within, which we can express once we know how to use the techniques to do so.” He states. This has led Cooper students to specialize in techniques such as welding, forging, and using power tools as well as heavy machinery to create. “I teach students to focus, to look and observe, to see what is really there, not what they think is there”.

Bob Mosier explains that his philosophy in teaching art creates a connection between all the subjects studied at school, that art is all encompassing, it’s music, literature, food, science, puzzles and conundrums, movement, dance, location, environment, space, it’s not an isolated subject, it’s an expression of who we are as individuals.

The John Cooper School has a wonderful array of sculptures on campus, two are by Bob Mosier, who has degrees in both photography and sculpture, the rest represent the work of individual students or groups of students working together. Each sculpture begins with a drawing, then a 3D maquette is made, measuring around 11”, and then it builds and develops along the way telling its own story and becoming part of the school’s history. The two Mosier sculptures being - “Ascend” a welded steel sculpture consisting of a tower of abstracted steps and books which lean together, representing the student body and formation of a group, an homage to the class of 2007.  “Convergence”, also welded steel, is situated in the central courtyard of the school, abstracted forms of tuning forks, crystalline structures and a rocket ship about to launch, was created in 2016. Two important sculptures with important narratives addressing ambition and the value of community. A selection of these pieces are featured in the book

“The Woodlands Outdoor Sculptures: installations from 1974 – 2009”, written by Anthony Motto.

Many Cooper alumni students who have studied in the art barn under Bob Mosier’s guidance have moved on to do great things, thanks to his unique approach. Developing and designing everything from prosthetics to computer apps, as well as being established practicing artists.

I was fortunate enough to tour the school, the art barn and the sculpture collection with Bob Mosier, and it is obvious that he is a much-loved respected educator, students greet him warmly whenever he is around.

BOTTOM: Bob Mosier with a turned wooden piece

Finishing up his last few days, before retirement, it seems only appropriate that he and the art barn should exit as one. “I will miss being in the room with the smartest people every day” referring to his students.

An artist never retires, and there are many, many materials and new techniques to be discovered and explored, “I’ve never found a material I didn’t like” says Mosier, who is himself, an internationally exhibiting artist, his exploration has taken him from welding steel to current experimentations in fiber art, using the media of freeform machine embroidery, which he builds up in multiple layers of threads. Working with 3 – 4 sewing machines at a time, the threads are treated like paint to create depth and form in his soft, sculptural pieces. Mosier’s current schedule includes studio time between 4.30 am and 6.30 am, where he works from his home studio surrounded by nature, his horses and dogs.

The art barn, which has been part of the creative journey for so many, will be replaced by a larger, spacious, up to the minute department adjacent to the exquisite Performing Arts Center. The memories made in the art barn, mini-mesters, open houses, and creative ambience will relocate to the new space, using the existing educational art foundations and philosophies as a building block. Once deconstructed, the beams from the building have potential to reemerge as a series of sculptures, it seems only apt that Bob Mosier would express his artistic voice and creativity in reinventing these beams which are part of the original infrastructure.

We can’t wait to see the new department and expressions of talent, inspiration and artworks created within, and experience the great oak that this little acorn has become.

Vacationing Made Unique

TAKE VACATIONING TO AN ENTIRELY NEW LEVEL WITH THESE UNRIVALED VACATION IDEAS

Nothing screams summertime like a relaxing vacation without a singular care in the world. There are no phone calls from work or places to be, only the longing for relaxation. Tanning on crystal clear Florida beaches, hustling through the thick crowds at Disney, and jumping into cozy lakes become frequently visited vacation spots. While these trips create fond memories for the

entire family, what if a unique twist was put on the vacation experience? For your summer plans, consider these three unconventional yet thrilling expeditions!

Do you have a baseball-loving friend or family member or someone who loves to explore new places? Look no further than taking a ballpark tour throughout the United States at the top MLB stadiums! Whether you are a die-hard fan or want to experience where baseball history was made, this trip is sure to excite the inner sports fan. The beauty in scouting out all the major league ballparks is the ability to plan the trip your own way on your own schedule. Several tours throughout the U.S. are already curated for an easier and stress-free experience. Not only do they contain tickets and set dates for stadiums, but they

also book hotels. For most ballpark tours, the trips are divided into three areas of the United States: Midwest, Southwest, and the East Coast. From the home stadiums of the Cubs and White Sox to the oldest stadium, Fenway in Boston, you and the family alike are sure to create an experience of a lifetime. Along with the stadiums, each of these tours contains around two to three famous landmarks that you will not want to miss! If you’re not quite the planner type, then you are in luck! The Wander Club created an easy-to-use Baseball Road Trip Planner that does all the planning for you! All you have to do is pick your teams, plan the days you are able to see your specifically picked teams, and the planner will give you a rough idea as to where and when you can see these

teams. Even if you’re not a baseball or sports guru, the memories from these parks will last a lifetime!

If the heat of July is too much to bear, consider a refreshing trip on the lake renting a houseboat. Rentals are available for houseboats on almost every major lake in the United States. One such spot is right on Lake Ouachita in Arkansas. Rentals range from half a day, an entire week, or just the weekend. Depending on where you rent your boat from, either you or a marina staff member will be manning the boat. Houseboat rentals such as Almost Home Houseboats contain a Presidential Series compiled of four boats that are 75 feet long by 16 feet wide and will comfortably sleep 14 people. To give a general idea of the luxury these boats offer, some of the houseboat amenities are a fully operating kitchen, a washer and dryer, a hot tub, a waterslide, a gas grill, fully-stocked linens for bed and bath, and central heat and air. They also have WiFi connections if needed. If these amenities are still not convincing enough, most houseboats also have the ability to hook up to other water activities like kayaking, jet skis, wakeboarding, and other water sports. Almost every marina has the ability to rent these items if they are not in your repertoire of boating equipment. When the discussion lands on food, having an operational kitchen means that groceries will be a must on this trip. Plan to go to the store right before boarding the houseboat as you will not be able to make a quick trip later. With open decks, you and your family can grill and stretch out under the sky and watch clouds passing by. At night, stargazing is a must to discover constellations. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, leave the houseboat and hike the trails around the lake for the full experience of nature. Renting a houseboat is one of the purest forms of rest and relaxation.

Lots of fishing, jet skiing and water play when you vacation on a houseboat.

If you desire to sail the open sea, then we have another thrilling adventure that travelers will thoroughly enjoy. Sailing vacations are becoming increasingly more popular as the ability to take lessons is more readily available. Learning how to sail a sailboat is available through several programs that include hands-on sailing instruction. While learning how to man a sailboat, you will also be given the ability to be involved in various water activities like snorkeling, fishing, and visiting local attractions at nearby ports. Some people even see whales! Depending on the boat, you will either be lodging on your vessel or booked at a nearby hotel. According to American Sailing, San Diego is the hotspot when it comes to sailing schools. The best part overall is that you have the ability to earn American Sailing Association (ASA) certifications while vacationing on the open sea. Now, if learning to sail isn’t your cup of tea, then there are other sailing vacations that are similar to the houseboat rentals. Two types of sailing vacations are the bareboat charter and the captained charter. As the names imply, the difference is whether you would like a captain or not. With the bareboat charter, you are essentially left to your own devices. The charter company can offer maps, traveling tips and help plan excursions, but you essentially have the freedom to go wherever you want whenever you want. While no crew members accompany you on your trip, you do have the ability to hire a chef or other crew members as you please. On the other hand, you can choose to take a captained charter trip where you are as handsoff as you prefer. The crew will have everything covered and might even take you to secret gems that only the locals know exist. Whether sailing or relaxing, both will hold lasting experiences that you will never forget.

“Mom! I’m Bored”

A Summer Survival Guide of Sizzling Ideas

Whoever said, it’s “Summertime and the livin’s easy,” obviously didn’t have a house full of kids to feed and entertain. While June is electrified with the freedom from school and homework, July brings the hot, sticky doldrums of summer. This is the time to activate the anti-boredom protocol. It requires thinking outside the box and one step ahead of your offspring. Honestly, it’s not really that hard because they’re completely distracted by their phones anyway.

FAMILY CARE | LIFE + CULTURE

Day camps are a great opportunity to learn new skills, like golf, swimming, and art. Cooking camp, though, teaches kids a skill that also benefits you. What busy parent couldn’t use an extra cook in the kitchen? Sur la Table in Market Place is offering hands-on, week-long classes for young chefs ages 7 to 17 through August 25th to learn preparation and planning techniques, baking, and even how to open a restaurant. Young Chefs Academy, located on Research Forest Drive, is cooking up fun for 6- to 12-year-olds mornings and afternoons until school starts, along with one-day, 90-minute classes for kids ages 4 to 17. Teach them to cook and they’ll never go hungry.

If your little sweethearts are really starting to bug you, remember you catch more flies with honey, especially if you can farm the honey yourself. Michael Hardman at Spicy Fly Honey Bees in Tomball can teach you how. With his professional instruction and guidance, anyone tall enough to wear the protective equipment can learn to be a beekeeper. Mother Nature will thank you. Give him a buzz to schedule a time to meet the bees or try an introductory class through the website spicyflyhoneybees.com .

Perhaps you’re finding their towels on the floor. Let those be the first contributions for a neighborhood towel drive for the Montgomery County SPCA. Anyone whining about the dinner menu can help contribute to the food drive for the Montgomery County Food Bank. Seriously, even the littles can participate in a neighborhood canned food drive or fundraiser from a lemonade stand at the park. For every $1 raised, five meals will be served to those in need. Everyone over 16 can be a blood donor and summer is when area blood banks have their greatest need.

Woodlands Axe is throwing out ideas to burn off energy. Smash Therapy might be a great way to break up the routine. Climb Woodlands is rocking ways to keep everyone off the ledge. And Saddle River Range in Conroe is on point if you’re shooting for a new idea like archery. You can also book it over to the public library.

When your best efforts still aren’t working, maybe your young person should. Kids home from college and high schoolers over 16 can apply at The Woodlands Township or The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, earn some extra money and be on the inside for all the summer concerts. They’re not yet old enough to start contributing to Social Security? Let them start their own business! Forget the lemonade stand: create a haunted house and charge an entrance fee. Organize a furry fashion show and pet parade. Water patio plants for vacationing neighbors. Encourage them to host their own art, fitness, science, dance, or theatre camp for younger kids in the neighborhood.

Don’t wait for the winter holidays to send the kids over the river and through the woods. Pack them off to Grandma’s house now and call your siblings to do the same. Cousin Camp is the perfect opportunity for the next generation to create wonderful summer memories with each other and their grandparents, memories that will last a lifetime.

At the end of the hot, humid, mosquito-filled day, though, summer is still fleeting. Back to School sales will be starting any minute, and you’ll be back to the grind. Enjoy them while you have them.
