For Heading Back to School

Customization is key

School will soon be back in session. This means it will soon be time for kids to rock their style down the hallways. Clothing trends are coming and going at an increasingly rapid pace. However, we have also seen a rise in personal style. Unique looks that are true to your kid’s personality are quickly becoming more popular. With customization in mind, a couple of local shops are helping kids curate items that show off their individual styles. Stocked with hard-to-find brands in an array of fash ionable styles is the children’s boutique, Kid’s Anthem. The boutique carries toys, shoes, and clothing from fashion-forward and unique lines from New York and California, and brings them to Tomball. Never sacrificing comfort, store owner Sharon Wilson hand picks all of the brands she keeps in stock to ensure that everything in her store is both comfortable and cute. Comfort is key for the kids and cute for aesthetically-minded parents.

John explains, “Everyone wants to be unique. Everyone wants a piece of them that they can wear and say, ‘I’m the only one that has these.’ It’s kind of a little badge of pride, especially for teenagers and young adults.” The process for a custom pair of sneakers takes around a month, depending on the level of customization.

FASHION FORWARD | SHOPPING20

A pair of shoes for the start of the new school year is on the back-to-school checklist. Sneakers are all the rage, but it can be easy to be lost in a sea of tennis shoes squeaking down the hallways. Houston-based JPOPS Customs brings specialized style to footwear. Founder of JPOPS, John Papasideris has created custom kicks for local rap stars and commemorative rodeo pairs. He’s been seeing a growing trend of sneaker orders for kids.  Like Cinderella’s slipper, it started with a pair of Disney shoes. John made a custom pair for his threeyear-old niece and word quickly spread of the princess kicks. Soon, John had orders for other one-of-a-kind Disney-inspired kids’ shoes. Whatever your child dreams up, JPOPS can craft onto a pair of sneakers.

Staple items like shoes and backpacks are needed every back-to-school season. Instead of grabbing off the rack, students in The Woodlands area have options when it comes to essential items with personal flair.

Alongside school schedules and teacher meet-andgreets are picking out backpacks and lunch boxes for the big kids and nap mats for the little ones. Kid’s Anthem offers easy ways for children to personalize their school gear. For the younger kids, the line Mint has monogrammable pastel-covered nap mats and tiny backpacks. For older children and tweens, find Luna Fresca backpacks which offer customizable backpack patches. The bags are cute on their own but provide a canvas for children to decorate with their patchwork design. Sharon says, “It just customizes it and makes it a little bit more personal and special for the child.”

• Sleepovers: curated sleepover spaces in the comfort of your own home. Perfect for kids and teen birthdays.

“Unique, ‘Pinterest-worthy’ and beautiful.” This is what you can expect when you have a party hosted by Glamp Woodlands, Erin says. You receive one-stop-shop service. “Parents want an experience where their kids are going to have fun, some thing that saves them time, which is where we come in and take care of everything from start to finish.” You can choose from the following setups:

• Picnics: beautiful, themed tablescapes to eat in style!

With so many options, what are the most popular packages? “The deluxe picnic package and the indoor sleepovers in the neutral theme. Because we are in the heat for such a long period of time in Texas, our indoor options do become very popu lar,” says Erin. A birthday party by Glamp will leave children wowed from the moment they set eyes on their setup to the very end and beyond, when they will cherish the memo ries for months to come. Parents can expect a “sigh of relief when they don’t have to set up or tear down their party,” says Erin. A win-win for all! If it’s not “on the ‘Gram,” did it ever happen?

• Lounges: canvas bell tents and Glamp’s brand new cabanas serve as the perfect Instagram-worthy backdrop for kids’ parties and even baby showers.

A birthday party isn’t just a birthday party anymore. It’s 2022, meaning moms and dads can reminisce about bounce houses and skate party celebrations, while facing the reality of trying to put together a unique, cool, and perhaps social media-worthy party. Throwing “the best party ever” requires planning, prep, cleaning up, and so much more!

“It was easy for me. Erin was flexible and wonderful, they just coordinated without me having to do much…they have great taste, they make it happen!” says Lotte, a repeat client of Glamp Woodlands. Sound like a dream? Not at all. Lotte speaks highly of her experience with Erin Hayes and her team at Glamp Woodlands.

From decorating cupcakes to drinking faux champagne in real champagne glasses with cotton candy and cupcakes makes for perfect com bination for kids and young adults to share with their friends,” Cailean goes on to say.

“I think the number one thing that children love the most about decorating cupcakes is they get to be creative, then they get to eat it! They do also love pretending to be an adult when drinking their fancy faux mocktails,” says Cailean. At Cupcakes and Bubbles, you can truly create a party like no one else’s. Charon has recently completed radiation treatment and has plans to return to Canopy soon. Once again as a volunteer.

This past July, Charon was diagnosed with breast cancer and having a community to turn to during her cancer treatment was a huge comfort. Charon explains, ”not only have I been a volunteer, but I have also received some services for myself and they’re amazing.” Returning to Canopy as a client, “I went there and they gave me the welcome bag that we always gave out to other people.”

A one-of-a-kind cancer service center is in The Woodlands. Canopy Cancer Survivorship Center provides assistance for those with cancer, caregivers, and family members. From cooking and exercise classes, coffee chats, and more, Canopy offers a homey feeling in the heart of The Woodlands Medical Center.

A heartbreak no parent should ever have to go through, in 2008 Charon lost her six-year-old daughter Carlie to neuroblastoma cancer. After a long-fought threeyear battle, Charon turned to volunteer-work. Canopy’s mission of providing services to anyone going through cancer called to Charon. Her favorite way to give back is by helping with the kids cooking classes. Charon says, “I miss having my daughter to do that stuff with so I enjoy volunteering for that class especially.”

Elizabeth Kutchback, a registered nurse in Memorial Hermann’s neonatal unit, says that after a failed screen ing, “It is important to provide all NICU infants with a book to encourage a parent reading program, support the parent-infant relationship through holding, read ing, and singing, paired with positive touch times.

Lee says a special pediatric audiology suite has been placed within the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Memorial Hermann, consisting of an audiology sound booth and equipment to assess hearing function. The suite enables more effective delivery of proper care at the time of the failed hearing screen test, says Lee, and the opportunity for a better connection with the fam ily, since planning can start right away.

Each year, three of every 1,000 newborns in Texas are diagnosed with hearing loss, according to 2019 data from the Texas State Department of Health Services. Yet the follow-up rate for newborns who fail their initial hearing test is only fifty-one percent, says Lee Rech, executive director of All Ears! Listening and Language Center, a non-profit that works with families of deaf and hard of hearing children to develop listening, spoken language and literacy skills.

A NEW PARTNERSHIP BRIDGES THE GAP FOR INFANTS AND CHILDREN WITH HEARING LOSS

All Ears! is the only organization of its kind in the Montgomery County area, says Lee, combining the fea tures of an auditory therapy center with a mainstream preschool program in which deaf children learn to lis ten and speak alongside their hearing peers.

ARTICLE BY ASHLEY RICHMOND PHOTOGRAPHY BY RICK FRANK

Now, through a new program which began just last month, All Ears! is partnering with Memorial Hermann–The Woodlands Hospital to advocate, offer informa tion, and provide the opportunity for critical follow-up care to hearing impaired children, starting at the infant stage. It’s a groundbreaking collaboration, the first of its kind in The Woodlands area.

LANGUAGE&LISTENING

The mission of All Ears! is to bridge the gap, giving infants and all children the services they need to thrive, says Lee. The programs offered by All Ears! are led by master’s level educators and speech language pathologists, all of whom have an additional three years of specialized training in spoken language development and pediatric hearing loss, says Lee.

Melissa Gary’s daughter Merritt joined the All Ears! program when she was just an infant. “At 10 days old, Merritt was formally identified with bilateral moder ate hearing loss. At her audiologist visit, I was intro duced to our speech-language pathologist, Allison Haggerty, who specializes in teaching children with hearing loss to listen and talk. After learning about all our options, we decided on early intervention of auditory verbal language and made the decision to fit Merritt with hearing aids so she could make the most of her remaining hearing ability to support the development of spoken language. Throughout the intervention, our audiologist and speech-language pathologist collaborated continuously to ensure Merritt had auditory access to support spoken lan guage development so Merritt would not fall behind socially, or academically. Had we not had an audiolo gist and listening and spoken language specialist to guide us through these first years of Merritt’s life, I highly doubt she would be as successful in her com munication abilities to support the academic success that she continues to demonstrate,” says Melissa. Through the new partnership with Memorial Hermann Hospital, says Lee, many more families will get the help they need, providing children with an effective path forward. The collaboration speaks volumes about the community’s commitment to pro vide more opportunities to help all of our children to become successful. “Children who are deaf or hard of hearing can reach their full potential and have beau tiful speech, if we get them started early,” says Lee. Baby Grace receives a hearing screening in the Memorial Hermann NICU.

With the increased use of technology, specifically phones and tablets, we like to support the impor tance of limiting the use of electronics and encour age talking and remind parents of AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) guidelines about screen time and the impact of basic speech and play for infant and toddler development,” states Elizabeth.

30

The centers provides Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) Intervention for infants and toddlers, an LSL education program for children 18 months and older, and a full inclusion program through a partnership with an early learning program at a local school, where children with hearing loss put the LSL programs into action as they learn alongside their hearing peers. It’s a personal mission for Lee, whose daughter was born deaf and grew up learning to navi gate the world through the LSL approach.

There is nothing quite like a dog who feels safe in the world after being rescued from a harrow ing life. Friends of Faye in Conroe has helped hundreds of dogs off the streets and into homes throughout Montgomery County and beyond.

This foster-based and social media-driven non profit sprung up during the COVID pandemic to support traditional shelters and rescues during some very trying times.

Hillary Egan, Friends of Faye founder and director, advocates on behalf of lost, abused, and abandoned dogs with a strong team of volun teers. Foster families—the special heroes of this work—offer temporary homes in surrounding cities from The Woodlands to Willis and beyond. Thanks to this fostering network, adoptions and collaborations with other rescues are possible locally and nationwide.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING Faye’s rehabilitation coincided with the COVID crisis.“There are parallels between animal and human welfare,” explains Hillary. “When people struggle to feed their families, they also struggle to feed and vet their pets.” She and Catherine Doyle, rescue coordinator at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter, began brainstorming ways to help shelters cope. Fostering, owner retention, and networking became the focus. Friends of Faye, a 501(c)3 Rescue

FAYE’S BACKSTORY Faye, an emaciated white German shepherd, burst onto the scene in January 2020. A local midwife spotted a dog in extremely rough shape scooting in circles on a county road. With a client in labor, all she could do was post pictures on Facebook and plead for help. The power of social media worked its magic. Concerned rescuers shared photos throughout the United States. The Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue in Virginia took long-distance respon sibility for the dog, later named Faye, while Montgomery County volunteers frantically searched for the injured animal. After calls to the sheriff’s department and animal control, they learned that Montgomery County Animal Services had picked up Faye. Thanks to an entire team of shelter employees and volunteers, Faye was rushed to the Vergi ER in Houston, pregnant, with a broken back and mul tiple gunshot wounds. It’s a miracle she survived. The foster mom and adopter, who happened to be Hillary Egan, ushered Faye through miscarriage and months of therapy until she learned to walk again. All Faye wanted to do was love Hillary back.

Beautiful adoption stories are part of a never-ending effort. The funding pressure is daunting. Friends of Faye covers vet bills for dogs of every age before and during fos tering. Spaying, neutering, dental care, surgeries, therapy, and rehabilitation are done through partners such as Stone Ridge Veterinary Medical Center, Texas Litter Control, Thomas Animal Clinic, and The Rescue Vet Clinic.

In almost every circumstance, vetting costs far exceed adoption fees, and tax-deductible donations make all the difference. Some add Friends of Faye as their charity of choice on Amazon and buy from the rescue’s wish list. Those who can’t foster or adopt help by sharing on social media. Others transport dogs locally or volunteer with My Chi and Me Rescue, a transport link to northern rescue options in New York, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Learn more at FriendsofFaye.com . The website lists available dogs to foster, adopt, and support, with links to social media updates and photos.

RYKER GOES VIRAL

Former castaway dogs have become viral celebrities and rescue ambassadors thanks to the power of a “share,” especially those with heart-tugging stories. Hillary posted the plight of Ryker, an owner-surrendered, starv ing husky with severe mange, to social media, including YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and more. The husky’s video caught the attention of the We Love Animals page on Facebook, which generated 1.1 million reactions and 24 million views. A simple online search of “Ryker husky” pulls up mentions on The DoDo, Truth Times, Animal Channel, Family Pet, and numerous other platforms as far away as Germany. Mike and Donna Dugan in Pennsylvania applied for adop tion. “We followed Ryker’s recovery story from the first day Hillary posted about him,” says Mike. “We are husky lovers and lost one to cancer. Our husky Dallas was look ing for a playmate, and Hillary drove Ryker to Pennsylvania personally. His story has made him a great rescue advocate. Hillary still checks in, and we’re amazed at the fans who follow Ryker Renewed on Facebook.”

ARTICLE BY LAURA L. GREEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RICK FRANK THREE CANINE COMPANIONS WHO’RE LOVING LIFE

Communicating expectations. Investing time. Maintaining commitment. These are building blocks in our human relationships, and they help us form a strong connection with our dogs too.   Scientists say that humans began taming grey wolves more than 15,000 years ago, before the advent of agriculture and predating the domestication of cats and horses. It’s no wonder that for some people, a dog is their most trusted relationship, as close as a best friend or a family member. For others, their very lives depend on the bond they nurture with a canine companion.

A service dog was a possible alternative. But at 5 feet 8 inches tall, matching a trainable breed to Jessica’s height was a problem. Labs and goldens were too short—a brace on their backs would have to be extended in order for her to hold onto it as she walked, which would make it less steady. Great Danes were  too tall. Dang it, she remembers think ing, I’m stuck with a shepherd!  It was an ironic realization, one that stirred up bad memories for Jessica: As a child, she had been bitten—not once, but three different times—each on a separate occasion by a different German

SAILOR “He knows what I’m going to do before I do it,” says Jessica Paulin, a former financial advisor who lives in Magnolia. After suffering two mini strokes in 2019, Jessica was diagnosed with multiple scle rosis. She was also experiencing memory loss and having trouble maintaining her balance. She was just 44 when she made the decision to take a medi cal retirement from her job so that she could figure out a path forward for living with her symptoms.

A Navy veteran, Jessica had always thought of herself as active and athletic, but her MS chal lenged that self-perception. “We knew from brain scans and lumbar X-rays of the spine that I might be wheelchair bound soon,” she recalls. “My image of myself is that I’m a fit person. I ran 10-15 miles every few days.”

When another mini stroke brought life to a halt, her physical and occupational therapists told her it was time to start using a cane. “I did not want it, I was defiant,” she remembers.

shepherd. The bites were unrelated, but they left a fear that became deeply engrained. Still, Jessica was determined, and she developed a meticulous plan to find the GSD pup that was right for her.

Through breeder Heidelberg German Shepherds in Spring, she waited for an upcoming litter, selected a puppy, and then visited each day in those early weeks, ensuring that the puppy knew her scent and the sound of her voice well before it was old enough to take home. “He knew who his mom was,” she says. She then spent 18 months working with a trainer in the Conroe area. Today, Jessica maintains a consistent regimen with her dog, Sailor, who’s large stature and impeccable training make him a standout wherever he goes.

Sailor is her constant companion, accompanying Jessica and her hus band to parks, restaurants, airports, and places across the globe. He’s so attuned to her every move and to her scent, says Jessica, that he can signal an oncoming mini-stroke, right before Jessica experiences it.

A dog’s needs are simple, but fulfilling them is a commitment, says Keith Jankowski, owner of USA Pet Resorts in Spring. A trainer for over twenty years, Keith says it doesn’t suffice to be away 8 to 10 hours a day, then arrive home, feed a dog, pat it on the head, and be done. It’s putting in the time, building the dog’s confidence, engaging in a positive way through exercise, proper nutrition, and knowing boundaries. “It’s a full relationship,” says Keith.

just as Covid-19 began to heat up and the world began to shut down. From then on, Houston was a part of their lives in a way they could not have antic ipated before the pandemic. “The positive was that the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. We formed a bond. Usually humans are so busy with work and socializing. Now, we were really spending time together.”  At first, Ron’s video conference calls during the shutdown tended to be more formal. But gradually, real life started creeping in, he says, and Houston was happy to make himself known on camera--a bit of barking, a little playfulness within camera shot, became an ice breaker that sparked conversation, HOUSTON “It’s like having a kid,” says Ron Biles. He and his wife Sammi recall bringing home their German shepherd puppy, Houston, back in 2019. “He was so sweet and clumsy,” says Sammi. Part of their challenge was acclimating Houston into a family that already included two pets— Cabela, a female Labrador retriever, and a very vocal orange tabby named Roxy. Sammi says it took Houston a while to figure out what to think of Roxy and that at first Houston was an annoyance to the more mature Cabela. “She is so chill, and Houston was all over the place, bouncing off the walls!”  Ron is in medical sales, and his job requires travel. He and Sammi brought the new puppy home

The simple act of taking your dog out for a walk is a vital part of a har monious dog-human relationship, says Keith. “There’s a mental and phys ical stimulation and connection that happens during that walk.” “Dogs want a job to do,” says Heidelberg’s Laura Fuller-Lary, who works with Ron and Sammi on Houston’s continued training. “If we don’t give dogs a job, they’ll find their own. That’s when the opportunist comes out, and we get unwanted behaviors,” she says.

says Ron. “We were all working at home, going through the same trials with our pets,” he laughs. He and his clients and colleagues began sharing dog stories and offering each other tips. “During COVID we went on a lot of walks,” says Sammi. “For Houston, that’s all he’s ever known,” she says. “He’s like my husband’s shadow now.”

Can you help us find a new home for Boogie? It took no time for Keith to decide that Boogie’s forever home was going to be with his own family, and this past summer, when Keith opened the new USA Pet Resorts in Spring, Boogie became the unofficial mascot. She goes to work with Keith every day, where she can run the obstacles courses, play catch, and swim in the pool. “She’s loving life,” says Keith, “She’s living the way she was meant to.”

BOOGIE She was a handful, recalls Keith. A German shorthaired pointer, highly intelligent, with boundless energy, Boogie’s family boarded her frequently for “staycation” visits at Keith’s dog resort back in Odessa. “She was a blast, always up for a good time in the pool or the yard,” recalls Keith’s daughter, Kayla Jankowski, who’s now the managing director of their new Spring facility. She’s written an essay, entitled, “Boogie,” about the playful and energetic pup who was a frequent visitor to their pet resort in Odessa. “Her mom and dad loved her very much, but I could feel their dread every time they picked her up,” she writes.

A dog’s needs are pretty simple: “We’reagoodpackfamily,”saysRonBiles.“Some nights, when we’re all in the living room, I’m in the recliner, Houston’s by my side. My wife is on the couch with Cabela, Roxy is on her leg or a pillow. Everything’s all in unity.”  For Jessica Paulin, the way she looks at life now is shaped by the presence of Sailor. He gives her the positive state of mind that has helped her handle the progression of her disease, she says. Getting up in the morning, fresh with excitement, getting out and moving with a buddy who’s happy to be there.

Boogie’s owners didn’t have the ability to meet her needs for play and exercise, which were a far bigger commitment than they may have bargained for, says Kayla. Classified by the American Kennel Club as “sporting dogs,” German shorthairs require hours of activity and attention: Rain or shine. Every day.

It did not come as a total surprise, says Kayla, when her dad received a request from Boogie’s owners:

The local arts scene in and around The Woodlands provides an amazing mix of events and performances on any given day, and August is no exception. This month promises entertainment for audiences of all ages through stage performances, music, and dance. Below, we list some anticipated attractions—family-friendly or perfect for a night out.

One of the most exciting new contem porary dance productions debuts at The Glade on August 12–14. “Escape Velocity: Dance, Design, A.I.” is a journey through four performances, each in its own gallery. If you’re unfamiliar with contemporary dance, this NobleMotion Dance produc tion is a great entry event. WORLD-CLASS DANCE We reached out to Andy Noble, exec utive director and co-artistic director of LATE SUMMER ATTRACTIONS COMING OUR WAY ARTICLE BY MELANIE SAXTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY LYNN LANE NobleMotion Dance, for a deeper dive into his groundbreaking choreography. “Think dance meets parkour with a dash of cirque,” he says of Escape Velocity’s multiple shows each evening. The Cube, Ziggurat, Two Walls, and the A.I. Room takes audiences through escapades of extreme athleticism designed not just for art connoisseurs but sports aficionados, football dads, gym nasts, and other fans of adrenaline. Two climbable sculptures—The Cube and the 12-foot spinning Ziggurat (imagine heli copter blades)—feature thrilling physicality as dancers vault, swing, and flip within twelve feet of the audience. The result is an exhila rating bird’s-eye view of gravity-embracing performance. Houston dance critic and writer Neil Ellis Orts notes, “In ballet, danc ers flutter to the ground in a fight against gravity. Contemporary choreography like NobleMotion’s does the opposite. The danc ers fall into gravity and careen downward.”

Spectators in the A.I. Room are in for an immersive experience. Imagine the dancers moving through the gallery space and into the audience as the technology reinterprets their movements. Noble and his wife Dionne, also co-artistic director, began experimenting with the intertwining of dance and artificial intelligence as asso ciate professors at Sam Houston State University. They first featured this technology in their “Man Overboard” performance at Hobby Center’s Zilkha Hall in 2019.

“When NobleMotion Dance burst onto the dance and technology scene, it was hard not to take notice,” says Nancy Wozny, editor in chief of Arts and Culture Texas and contributing editor to Dance Magazine. “The sophisti cated use of incredible visuals, experimental lighting, and projections makes a statement with flash and panache.”

“When NobleMotion Dance burst onto the dance and technology scene, it was hard not to take notice. The sophisticated use of incredible visuals, experimental lighting, and projections makes a statement with flash and panache.”

Group size also adds to the experience, and audiences can expect limited small-batch seating of sixty attendees per show. This larger group breaks into more intimate groups of twenty to explore the four individual gallery performances. Audience members can then return and experience the performance in a new way or enjoy a com pletely different show.

“We hope the excitement generated by Escape Velocity will lead the company to become a larger part of The Woodlands community,” says Noble. Learn more about Escape Velocity and future events at noblemotiondance.com
