This is a month filled with festive get-togethers, summer camps for the kids, and family travel plans. With so much going on at this time of year, it’s easy for the days to slip away before you’ve had a chance to slow down and savor the very best of summer--those experiences, big and small, that create a foundation for fun and a lifetime of memories. In this month’s “Explorer’s Issue,” we’re bringing you the best of summer, whether you’re looking for a grand new adventure or seeking out the places in your own community that provide comfort and delight. You’ll find ideas for breaking out of the routines that can so easily become engrained during the “dog days” of summer. Make the most of time with family and friends by experiencing the delights of a classic Cajun meat market that’s close to home, a paradise of outdoor gear for the outdoorsman, and a gathering place that nurtures a strong community one cup of coffee at a time. Get outside and enjoy a local golfer’s look at just how fortunate we are to live in such a golf-centric area, then go below the water’s surface and take a deep dive into the world of scuba. Staying here for the summer? Look no further than the pampering luxury of a downtown staycation in the city. Never settle for the humdrum! Instead, make July the month to turn each day into a rich and glorious time of trying something new. It’s what this issue is all about, and we hope you will join us on the adventure. Don’t forget to share the fun with us on Instagram, and let us know the ways you’ve made this month a special one!

cool in the city A STAYCATION AT THE FOUR SEASONS HOTEL HITS ALL THE HIGH NOTES ARTICLE BY MELANIE SAXTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY DON RIDDLE
If your vacation imagination tends toward thoughts of lounging poolside, experiencing the best in fine dining, and sipping a stellar cocktail or two in gorgeous surroundings, your destination doesn’t have to require a wait in an airport security line or enduring a long flight.
A WARM WELCOME The trek down I-45 from The Woodlands takes visitors to the Four Seasons in downtown Houston in less than an hour. There, friendly valets meet, greet, and share tidbits about the nearby jogging trails at Discovery Green and the Ambrosia Market right across the street, offering worldwide fare including exotic pastries, cheeses, olives, and a floor of wines and kitchenware. The lobby, a stylish space that sets the mood, is reminiscent of a classic Sixtiesera hotel. Interesting décor, bookshelves, sofas, and the Krigler Parfumeur immediately catch the eye. An accommodating staff makes checking in a breeze, and if you’ve booked a fourth-floor cabana room, you’ll unpack to breathtaking views of the city skyline. Welcoming touches include a charcuterie board, generously stocked refrigerator, Enigma coffee maker, and a full room service menu. Kudos to the designers who make staycationers feel right at
home with the ambiance of contemporary furnishings, carpeting, lighting, artwork, and the luxurious linens Four Seasons is known for.
SPA AND POOLSIDE PARADISE The fourth floor is a wonderland of amenities, including the pool which can be accessed directly from cabana rooms with semi-private patios. The hot tub, water wall, Pool Deck Cafe, and stunning outdoor lounge accommodations bring next-level opportunities to decompress and unwind. For a pampering experience, the Four Seasons Spa offers relaxing massages, body treatments, facials, and nail services to make ready for an evening at the hotel’s restaurants or a night on the town.
CUISINE Award-winning and beautifully appointed Toro Toro is a global pan-Latin steakhouse also located on the fourth floor. This lightfilled restaurant draws dinner guests with fireplaces, panoramic views of the city, a large bar, and an impeccable staff. Chefs introduce special fare from the “suviche” bar (sushi & ceviche), including aguachile, flambé salmon rolls, and angry scorpion rolls of spicy tuna and crab. presented with activated dry ice. Shrimp cocktails float in a pool of savory and sweet spices with flavors that dance on the tongue. The Chilean sea bass is light, deliciously seasoned, and served on a bed of spinach. Bone-in beef rib “al carbon” tastes like prime rib cooked to perfection and is designed to be served as a taco, but you might find the flavors too good to mix--the rub is superb. The wedge salad, too, is a hit and includes a fresh and healthy base of greens. Amazing sweet corn empanadas filled with Manchego cheese are served with chimichurri and avocado puree. Crepes layer cake, yellow corn cake, homemade churros, and other confections beckon from the dessert menu. The La Bomba — yes, “the bomb” — is a perennial Toro Toro favorite with a chocolate half-sphere filled with ice cream, fresh berries, chocolate berries, caramel, and chocolate syrup drizzles, also presented with dry ice.
THE SPEAKEASY Bandista, an onsite 1920s-themed speakeasy, has an intimate yet social vibe. Guests feel like discreet party-goers at a private underground lounge, arriving in the latest haute attire and bonding over creative mixology. Talented bartenders delight onlookers with a cocktail laboratory center stage show of classic and contemporary interpretations.
MORE ENTERTAINMENT There’s more than meets the eye at Bayou & Bottle, a bourbon bar and restaurant located on the hotel’s first floor. It’s home to the virtual fairway at Topgolf Swing Suites with two simulators and games. Or, go out and about to enjoy Houston’s notable sports venues, Minute Maid Park, the Toyota Center, and BBVA Compass Stadium — just a quick drive away. Performing arts at the Hobby Center and the Wortham Center also provide delightful day or nighttime shows and cultural experiences.

THE FAMILY-RUN SPECIALTY MEATS COMPANY THAT’S JUST DOWN THE ROAD
A Cajun Meat Market Gem
ARTICLE BY GABRIELA IZQUIERDO

LOCA L’S CH OICE | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
An authentic Cajun meat market has found its home just south of The Woodlands. Originally located on FM 1960, La Boucherie recently opened its massive warehouse and storefront on Kuykendahl. After receiving lots of love for their home cooking, in 1995 Pattie and her late husband Royce decided to make the leap from the oil industry to food. Wanting to bring a taste of the little butcher shops that the Hollier family grew up shopping at in Louisiana, La Boucherie was born. The Hollier’s success story comes from years of hard work. A true family operation, sons Jason and Barrett have helped their parents run the store and warehouse since the beginning. A few years after opening their original storefront, the Holliers opened up a second location, where they garnered the attention of Brian Cook, who headed up H-E-B’s Central Market. A fan of La Boucherie, Cook brought their meats to the flagship Central Market on Westheimer, and the rest is history. You can still find La Boucherie’s products at H-E-B and other major retailers around the United States. Their warehouse ships out thousands of pallets of USDA-grade specialty meats. However, their storefront is a local hidden gem. A butcher shop with a wide variety of specialty items, some of their most loved products include turducken, stuffed chickens, and bacon-wrapped fillets. While La Boucherie might have grown in size, its quality has remained the same. Barrett Hollier says, “Through the years, our motto has been quality first before profit.” Fresh, never dehydrated, their stuffings are made from scratch just as grandma made them. Leading up to their father’s passing in 2017, the Hollier brothers and Pattie put their plans for the Spring warehouse and storefront on hold to take care of Royce. Already in the works before his passing, the massive new space is a testament to how far their small butcher shop has come. Continuing their father’s legacy, Jason and Barrett plan to grow La Boucher ie, and as always, serve fresh and delicious Cajun recipes.

A CUP THAT BUILDS COMMUNITY
BETH FERESTER CREATES A GATHERING PLACE FOR THE WOODLANDS ARTICLE BY LAURA GREEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BECCA WOOD
Visit the offices of Corcoran Ferester Realty, and the first thing you notice is the handsome, industrial modern décor. Paying homage to the structural elements of the past in a way that’s innovative and forward-looking is a fitting symbol, says Beth Ferester, founder and owner of Corcoran Ferester Realty in The Woodlands. A few steps away is Beth’s coffeehouse, Lovebeans, where the decor carries over some of the same industrial design, punctuated by bright bursts of cheerful red. As usual, Lovebeans is buzzing: A group of friends has gathered in the back lounge area for their daily coffee klatch. Two women relax at a table outside, enjoying iced drinks after a workout. A student is studying on a stool at the bar. In the corner, a husband and wife are on their iPads.
24
O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE
Lovebeans has become the community hub that Beth was hoping it would be.
The coffee shop welcomes a steady flow of patrons, many coming on foot and bicycle from Liberty Branch and other parts of Creekside--a steady rhythm of coffee lovers stopping in, crossing paths, running into someone they know, and catching up over a cappuccino. It’s the kind of comfortable hub that Beth was hoping to achieve with the shop. Order your favorite espresso drink and a chocolate chunk oatmeal cookie (Beth’s recipe!), and she’ll sit and chat about how creating a place like Lovebeans is an extension of her love of living and working in The Woodlands. A strong and purposeful focus on community, was foundational to the creation of The Woodlands, says Beth. Originally promoted as “A New Hometown,” its identity was wrapped up in the idea of making nature a prominent and thriving partner in the daily life of the community, ensuring that people had the opportunity to live outdoors as much as possible, and bringing neighbors together in the process. Not just another master-planned community, George Mitchell and other visionaries laid out a plan for the future that has enriched the meaning of what it is to live in The Woodlands today, says Beth. “It all took shape. The plan really worked,” she says. “Everything they did was with the consideration of strengthening the culture of the area.” She says their mindfulness focused on the ways the community would grow over the coming decades. Beth was already an award-winning agent in North Houston/Spring when she opened her own real estate office in Grogan’s Mill in 1994. It was the year The Woodlands Mall opened. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion had been built only two years earlier. She says The Woodlands was beginning to transform from a fledgling community to a destination for living that included outstanding art, shopping, and entertainment opportunities. The population at the time was around 30,000. By the year 2000, it had burgeoned to over 55,000. Beth’s business was growing right along with it. In 1998 she sold her real estate office, staying on with the new company for 17 years as their top producer. As The Woodlands continued to evolve and grow, she felt the urge to find a new challenge. “I wanted to do my own thing and set a path for the future.” In 2015, she started Beth Ferester & Company, opening her current Creekside office, then opening Lovebeans in 2019 when the space next to her office came up for lease. She plunged into the adventure with her characteristic hands-on exuberance, making many of the menu offerings herself–the cookies, the chicken salad, the sausage biscuits–all from personal recipes.
Beth says she created Lovebeans to be a “giving back” coffeehouse, with sales of merchandise donated to support local charities and schools. She’s worked to make the shop a gathering place that’s real and welcoming, mirroring her work as an agent. These were the things The Corcoran Group was drawn to when it came calling. “They value authenticity,” says Beth. In January of this year, Beth Ferester & Company became Corcoran Ferester Realty, the first affiliate in the state of Texas for The Corcoran Group. It was a great match, says Beth, who was impressed by the real estate group’s people and innovative systems. According to 2021 data from the Howard Hughes Corporation, The Woodlands is now home to 119,000 residents. People are looking for a place to thrive, says Beth, a hometown setting that provides a solid foundation for their personal lives and their work. For many people, their daily routines are built around their go-to coffee shop. More than simply a place to get their morning jolt of caffeine, says Beth, they’re looking for a spot that can serve as a reliable, friendly destination in which to gather. “Places like Lovebeans make a community,” she says. Now, with Corcoran Ferester and Lovebeans operating side-by-side, Beth is excited about the way these two distinct businesses function around a common goal. There’s so much on the horizon, and she can’t wait to see what’s in store for The Woodlands community in the years to come. Whatever the future may hold, the possibilities are worth pondering with friends over a cup of coffee!

A DEEP DIVE INTO THE WORLD OF SCUBA IT’S EASIER THAN EVER TO EXPLORE THE OCEAN’S TREASURES ARTICLE BY LAURA GREEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS SPICKS
30
G E T AC T IV E | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON
You don’t have to be a Navy Seal, or James Bond—or a mermaid—to feel right at home under the sea. Scuba diving is an activity that almost anyone can learn, says Gary Conner, owner of Woodlands Dive Center. The time spent learning to scuba opens up a whole new world. “You never know when you’re going to see something you’ve never seen in your life.” Especially appealing to those who enjoy tropical climes and resort vacationing, scuba is a pastime that’s grown in popularity over the last few decades. The ability to explore the grandeur beneath the water’s surface draws people from all walks of life and of all ages. “It was odd. I never thought that I’d want to do it. It wasn’t on my radar at all,” says Carol Knott Tefft, a local real estate agent and proud grandmother, who happened into scuba diving after making the winning bid at a charity auction for a trip to Roatán, Honduras. Several months before the trip, Carol’s son and his girlfriend invited Carol and her husband to take scuba diving lessons so that the family could dive while in Roatán. Her husband and her son’s girlfriend ended up backing out, but Carol moved forward, along with her son. “I loved it, absolutely!” she says.
TAKING THE PLUNGE Obviously, you need to know how to swim in order to take up scuba diving, and you need to be in good health. But contrary to popular belief, scuba diving does not require strenuous exertion, says Gary. You don’t have to be an athlete in order to dive. Diving schools offer classes through affiliation with certifying agencies such as SSI (Scuba Schools International), which is recognized worldwide. Certification can be completed in as little as a week, says Gary. “Sign up, and we fit you with gear—a mask, snorkel, fins, booties. There will be a couple of hours of homework, then we set up your class schedule for the weekend. “We have a pool onsite, so we train here.”

Students are introduced to the basic principles, says Gary, such as planning a dive, choosing the correct gear, underwater signals, and diving procedures. They practice “confined water dives” in the pool, where they can experience the decision-making process and situational awareness necessary for a dive. Things such as getting water out of your mask, buoyancy control, basic underwater navigation and safety are covered. “The first thing that people have to get used to is breathing correctly. You’re excited when you get under the water and you’re seeing everything for the first time, and you need to be able to maintain calm breathing.” But, says Gary, that comes about quickly as students relax and acclimate to the underwater environment. After that, students are ready to take their skills on the road. The Dive Shop take a field trip to Blue Lagoon--two spring-fed former limestone quarries near Huntsville, where they perform their “checkout dive” and apply the skills they’ve learned. After that, students are ready for their own adventures. “You’ll have a certification card good for anywhere in the world. You’ll be able to check into your hotel, and the next day go diving,” says Gary. What about the scuba training provided by resorts? Programs that are done on-site are very limited, says Gary. “You’re only certified for that day. It’s still done in a classroom. You’ll only be able to dive to a depth of about 30 feet, and you’ll be with the instructor the whole time. A real certification means that you’ll be autonomous, freer to explore,” he says. “I am not the kind of person who would take a quickie dive course on the boat before going in,” says Carol.
CHOOSING YOUR DIVE DESTINATION There is no shortage of great travel destinations in which to dive, says Gary. Recreational diving has become a special tourism niche. Scuba divers can explore the underwater landscape in numerous parts of the world, and equipment rentals are easier than ever to find while traveling. “I have my own mask and fins. I do rent my BCD [buoyancy compensator device], my regulator, and my tanks. When you go for a dive in Mexico off a boat, they are usually very well equipped with what you need,” says Carol.

Gary says that some people enjoy exploring wreckage, or drop-offs and walls. Most divers, especially those new to the sport, want to reef dive, to see life “inside the aquarium,” he says. Off the coast of Venezuela, in the southern Caribbean, is an ideal place to start. There, the island of Bonaire offers a multitude of reef-diving sites in warm, shallow waters--spots that are easy to get to and that offer up-close views of underwater flora and fauna. “It’s hard to explain the calming effect of the waters of the Caribbean,” says Gary, “and the amazing underwater scenery. In the Caribbean, you dive around the islands, usually going out with a dive operation around 400 or 500 yards, to a spot you’ve pre-selected. It’s like diving into a clear glass.” Another excellent place for beginners is Roatán, Honduras. The world’s second-largest barrier reef system is located just off Honduras Island, with optimal diving conditions year-round—shallow, great visibility and warm waters. It’s where Carol took her first real dive. “We get in the water,” she recalls, “and the first thing I see is a school of fish,
then a stingray, and I’m crying. I am in God’s aquarium, I’m not in a doctor’s office watching these things, and I’m doing it with my son. What could be better than this? I had to blow out my mask, not from leaking, but from crying so much!” Gary says other great destinations in the Caribbean include the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, Belize, and the Guadeloupe Islands. Some of Gary’s most memorable dives have been in the Mediterranean–Turkey, Italy, and Malta. “My favorite is the Red Sea,” he says, an inlet of the Indian Ocean between Africa and Asia. If you want to stay inside the U.S., Gary says Florida’s Jenny Springs provides an ideal freshwater diving experience. Or you can find great spots along the coast down by the Keys. Closer to home, he says divers love to explore the sunken Texas Clipper off the coast of South Padre Island. For the truly adventurous, there’s Dive Valhala, a decommissioned nuclear missile silo near Abilene that over time has filled with groundwater and is now a destination for adventurous divers. INTERACTING WITH THE DEEP “Underwater, it’s so diverse,” says Carol. “From a tiny shrimp to a lobster hiding under a rock, to stingrays, to sharks that really don’t bother you.” She says that wherever the sun comes through, the light creates a rainbow of color in the landscape down below. “It’s just amazing.” And what about those sharks, you may wonder? Unfriendly encounters are quite rare, says Gary. His favorite creatures to observe are dolphins, but he loves watching the sharks and the manta rays glide through the water too. There are a few rules to remember when interacting with the deep. Don’t swim too close to a reef and never touch, break off, or pick up a piece of coral. In fact, don’t take anything back with you as a memento. And don’t leave anything behind. “You look at everything. You touch nothing. You leave nothing,” says Gary.
FINDING NEW TREASURES When COVID hit, Carol had to put her plans on hold, but she’s hoping to have another family diving vacation underway soon. Taking that first dip into the water was the beginning of a hobby that she hopes will take her to exotic places for years to come. She advises others to go for it, just as she did. “Take your training seriously, but don’t be afraid,” says Carol. “The adventures to come are well worth it.“ The Dive Center offers scuba expeditions to Roatán every year, and Gary would also love to take a “liveaboard” dive trip to the Philippines, inviting 15 people or so to live onboard a yacht for several days and see everything there is to see in some of the most biodiverse waters on the planet. For those who’ve never experienced the underwater world, it may be difficult to understand just how strong the desire is to continue to explore once you’ve been into the deep. “You need to realize that it’s a unique experience of God’s beauty, a world you don’t know until you’re down there,” says Carol. If 71% of the earth’s surface is water, there’s a lot of diving left to do.

LINDA NELSON
DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT, MARKETING AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS
If You Build It, They Will Come From the beginning, the mission of Canopy Cancer Survivorship Center has been to provide its services to anyone with cancer--no matter where they are in their journey or where they receive treatment, remembers Linda Nelson, who oversees Canopy as Director of Business Development, Marketing and Community Relations at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center. “The overwhelming consensus was that the program should be free, and it shouldn’t look like a clinic or a hospital,” says Linda. When the center opened in 2016, Linda says it was a leap of faith. “You always think, if you build it, will they come? And they did!” With 70 volunteers, many of them cancer survivors, and around 74 programs a month, Canopy offers cooking classes, yoga, educational resources, support groups, and more. Its prosthesis fitting services and wig room bring patients from across the Houston area, says Linda. Canopy runs entirely on philanthropic dollars, she says, and owes much to the annual Memorial Hermann In the Pink of Health Luncheon. Canopy is one of the few programs of its kind in the nation, says Linda, and was recently recognized by Interfaith Ministries of The Woodlands as a 2022 “Hometown Hero.” “We want to be that warm blanket when someone walks through that door,” she says. “We know how to take care of cancer patients and their family members. Go to our website, join our mailing list, and find out all that we offer!” MEDICAL PLAZA 1, 1120 MEDICAL PLAZA DR #250, SHENANDOAH, TX 77380

Gearing Up for the Hunt FOR THE MODERN OUTDOORSMAN, ALL THE BEST IS CLOSE AT HAND ARTICLE BY GABRIELA IZQUIERDO
There’s no shortage of women’s boutiques. However, hidden among the clothing shops and home stores in downtown Tomball, there’s an apparel and outdoors store designed specifically for men. Jaime and Brian Groff saw the need for a brand that caters to men for their everyday necessities and luxuries. In 2017, the husband and wife duo opened Commerce Street Clothes and quickly outgrew the location. They have since moved to Main Street and have rebranded to Covey Apparel & Outdoors. The specialty boutique has everything a gentleman could want, from casual apparel to hunting gear and even barware. With the fall hunting season approaching, Covey plans to bring in more gear and camo. Tomball is the perfect location for Covey, as Jaime Groff says, “Here, there’s a real sense of community and support, and it just tugged at my heart. I knew that was the place for us.” Grab a beer from their bar, shop with Jaime and Brian, and you might leave with a new pair of friends.

In the face of grief, Midge and David connected and found hope in their long walks, picnics, weekly Spanish classes, and the process of healing together. This special connection organically blossomed from companionship to something deeper - true love - and the couple joyfully tied the knot at The Village’s beautiful Waterway Room in March. The nearly constant laughter and larger-than-life smiles in no way indicate the harrowing story between newlyweds Midge and David. In the winter of 2019, Midge and David moved into The Village with their ailing, long-time partners, who sadly passed not long after.

Bags are packed, reservations are made, and the Out of Office automatic reply is letting everyone know you have officially entered vacation mode. There’s one thing that’s lingering: how to go on vacation without pressing pause on the fitness progress you’ve made, or avoid commuting to a gym and paying drop-in fees. Mayhem Athlete provides online programming that guarantees challenging workouts which can be done in 30 minutes or less. These quick but effective workouts incorporate compound movements such as burpees, push ups and lunges. Compound movements use more than one muscle group, requiring more energy from your muscles to recover. This means you can continue to burn calories while enjoying the beach or sitting at work, long after the workout is over. The Mayhem Athlete M30 program offers two options for all fitness levels. Mayhem Bodyweight, a 30-minute format that requires no equipment, and Mayhem Minimal, a 30-minute format which only requires a couple dumbbells. Mayhem Athletes’ easy to use app, SugarWOD, provides you with a warm up, workout, accessory cool-down, and coaching video - ensuring you get the most out of your 30 minutes! You can also find video demonstrations for each movement within the app and a community of like-minded individuals who are doing the same workouts around the globe.

Working for You
Carol Knott Tefft was phenomenal to work with! My house was only on the market for 6 days. She went out of her way to help me close f rom a distance. I’ve also worked with Carol on a few other sales, and a few rentals. Carol’s honesty has led me to some great real estate decisions. Most Realtors have become complacent and lazy in the internet age, but Carol still provides the great level of hometown service everyone loves. THE WOODLANDS AREA IS A GOLFER’S PARADISE ARTICLE BY LAURA GREEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAURA GREEN AND PROVIDED

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON
A lower back issue and foot surgery sidelined avid golfer John Green for over a year. He’s now fully recuperated, but because of the long hiatus, he considered giving up the sport. A 7-handicapper and a member of three private clubs in the Houston area over the years, he’d been consumed by the game for most of his adult life. Now, the thought of–literally–getting back into the swing of things seemed daunting. But a steady diet of tournament-viewing on TV and the allure of so many wonderful courses in The Woodlands area ultimately made a return to play irresistible. “Just when I thought I was out, it pulled me back in again,” he laughs. If the love of golf is like a fever, the opportunities for play in the greater Woodlands keep the fever spiking. “We live in a mecca for golfing,” says John. “People come in from other parts of the country on business, and they can’t wait to play our courses.” Across the Houston area, there are more than 165 public and private courses, and the number in the North Harris/Montgomery County area continues to grow. In addition to The Woodlands Country Club and The Club at Carlton Woods, just northwest of The Woodlands is Woodforest Golf Club, and in Conroe, players can hit the fairways at West Fork, Wedgewood, and River Plantation, among others. Further west, in Montgomery, the first Tiger Woodsdesigned course, Bluejack National, was completed in 2015. And from Tour 18, the developer of Spring’s Augusta Pines, Windrose, and Gleannloch Pines courses, comes the new Highland Pines Golf Club, located east of The Woodlands, near the Grand Parkway in Porter. The culture of golf is engrained in this area, says Thomas Hutton, executive director of the Southern Texas PGA, which covers the Houston, Austin and San Antonio regions, and is one of 41 PGA of America sections in the country which serve 800 members who work within the industry. “The golfing landscape in The Woodlands area is thriving.” Here and across the nation, says Thomas, the sport of golf experienced a boom during the pandemic. “Golf since COVID is up across all metrics, anywhere from 15 to 30 percent, including rounds played, equipment purchases, lessons, and club membership,” says Thomas. At The Woodlands Country Club, for example, the club continues to see extremely high activity year over year, well after the social distancing aspect of COVID has waned.

Texas has always been a golf-centric state and is the most-represented state in the country at the World Golf Hall of Fame, says Thomas. The big names of Texas golf history include Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, and Bruce Lietzke, as well as Jimmy Demaret and Jackie Burke, Jr., who founded the illustrious Champions Golf Club in the Cypress Creek area of Houston back in 1957. “We have the perfect ecosystem for golf to be great in this state,” says Thomas. That ecosystem, says Thomas, is nurtured by local PGA programs for the entire range of players, from entry level to the highest level. This month, the STPGA will hold the

Chevy STPGA Junior Championship at The Woodlands Country Club, the largest annual junior event in Texas. Thomas says the focus is on providing young players with the experiences that serve as an on-ramp to the future, fostering a lifetime of play. The challenge, the comradery, the scenic outdoors, all combine to create a sport that serious amateurs like John never tire of pursuing to its fullest. When he retires someday, he says he’ll use all that extra time to master his game on some of the great local courses in our area. “I’d like to play five times a week, and I’d like to shoot my age at some point in my life. That’s a goal!”
