Welcome Fall! With the changing seasons comes a change in what we are craving, and with fall that often means not only comfort food, but exploring new restaurants and flavors. October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite dishes and beverages available in The Woodlands. We had the pleasure of sitting down with some of our wonderful chefs as they shared their thoughts and some of their favorite recipes for you to try in your own kitchen. What a treat!

As Texans, we love our barbecue. We are lucky enough to have some of the best pitmasters right here in our own backyard. As highlighted in our cover story, Will and Scott share some of their fan-favorite secrets of a good smoke.

We get up close as we explore two restaurants that are more than a mere name. ‘They bring together the idea of creating a mythical personality that you would love to hang out with and that can bring a restaurant to life’ through thoughtful recipes, fun cocktails and an ambiance you will not soon forget.

While this issue is dedicated to creating flavorful art, we continue to uncover art in The Woodlands through talented musical performers and a visiting sculptor. As part of our own Artistic team, we welcome Jo Hammon, our new Editorial Coordinator. Jo is a long-time resident of The Woodlands with two kids attending TWHS. She brings us her expertise in graphic design and colorful writing projects.

I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to purchase a home in a (possible) recession and we would love to hear your opinion.

That’s a great question; thanks for writing in!

Ongoing inflation continues to cause confusion around whether we’re in a recession right now—or headed toward one in thenear future. In terms of how this applies to you, there are pros and cons to buying a house during a recession.

Home prices, buyer demand and mortgage rates generally decrease during a recession, so this definitely creates advantages for homebuyers. Additionally, short sales and foreclosures are common and present even more opportunities to purchase homes that previously may have been off-market (or much pricier). However, every “deal” isn’t going to be a green light. This is one of many reasons why it’s important to have an honest, sharp agent to advise you on whether or not to “pass go”!

On the flip side, it’s important to have a very transparent conversation with your partner

about finances before you even consider buying. Recessions can impact things like job security, so you want to be sure that you’re both in a really solid place to weather any hardships that could potentially come up.

So, should you and your fiance buy a house this fall? It really depends on your finances and goals as a couple.

If you have valid concerns around job stability and your collective savings aren’t in a strong place, then it might be a good idea to hold off.However, if your joint income is relatively stable and you plan to stay in your home for at least the next five years and gain equity by the time you sell, then I’d go for it.

AROUND THE KITCHEN TABLE WITH THREE CULINARY MASTERS

Celebrity Chefs and Their Personal Recipe Favorites ARTICLE BY MELANIE SAXTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEX WOOD For the fortunate families and friends of celebrity chefs, dinner du jour might be a restaurant-inspired meal, or something more pared down. Luckily for City Lifestyle readers, three culinary legends graciously share the ingredients to delectable dishes they prepare in their home kitchens (and, at times, in their establishments too).

We chatted with Chef (and proud dad) Austin Simmons of TRIS, Cureight, and The Kitchen, all in The Woodlands, about his restaurant fare and favorite at-home dessert. We caught up with Chef (and proud dad and grandfather) Paul Friedman of The Chef’s Table in Houston and his award-winning fare, influenced by cuisine around the world. We also enjoyed a delightful interview with the Italian-speaking Nonna Elda Orioli (translated by her grandson Enrique Orioli) about her Old World recipes, the foundation of every dish at Via Emilia Italian Restaurant and Avanti Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar in multiple locations.

Chef Austin, behind the bar, showcases "Chef’s Water,” a variation of one of TRIS' gin and tonics made of Gray Whale Gin and Fever-Tree elderflower tonic.

A sportsman who hunts, fishes, and golfs, Chef Austin has never left Texas despite numerous offers to work in California and New York. He raises his own cattle with an understanding of genetics and is known for his wholesome ranchto-fork quality beef. This includes Gyulais, an F1 crossbreed of black Wagyu and French Charolais.

With a slew of awards, including Chef of the Year and a James Beard nomination, and multiple restaurants to manage, Chef Austin believes in nutrient-dense foods seasoned to perfection.

“Cooking styles, clean eating, sustainable and renewable food — the cure is in the kitchen,” he says of a healthy palette. He takes pride in the sweet and sour and sweet and bitter nuances that impart flavor and create levels of taste sensations in his restaurant, Tris.

His three young daughters are also an inspiration — Tris, for whom one of his restaurants is named, and his toddler twins Aria and Ember.

He is happy to share a favorite family recipe —his scrumptious gluten-free version of a butter cake.

GLUTEN-FREE BUTTER CAKE

BY AUSTIN AND TRIS SIMMONS This recipe is a favorite father-daughter confection.

INGREDIENTS Cake • 1 cup butter, unsalted & softened • 2 cups sugar • 4 large eggs, room temperature • 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste • 3 cups King Arthur 1:1 ratio gluten-free flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt • 1 cup buttermilk Butter Glaze • 1 cup sugar • 1/2 cup butter, cubed • 1/4 cup water • 1 teaspoon almond extract • 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste (must be paste, not extract) • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt • 1 cup buttermilk DIRECTIONS • Pre-heat oven to 350°. Grease and flour a 10-inch springform pan (Note: I prefer using coconut oil spray for a better crust. It will smoke in the oven a little bit but it’s worth it!)

• In a large bowl or mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla bean paste.

• Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Whisk together and add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beating well after each addition.

• Pour batter into springform pan.

• Bake until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, about 55-70 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes.

• For the butter glaze, combine the sugar, butter, and water in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat just until butter is melted and sugar is dissolved. Remove the heat and stir in almond extract and vanilla bean paste.

• Using a fork or toothpick, poke holes on bottom of cake all over. Pour some glaze into the holes and then invert cake onto a plate.

• Poke holes in the top of the warm cake and spoon ¼ cup of the glaze over the cake. Let stand until sauce is absorbed. Brush sides with the glaze and let soak in very well. Add the rest of the glaze to the sides and top.

• Serve with topping of choice such as whipped cream or strawberries.

CHEF PAUL’S VLEIS PASTEI This classic dish from South Africa is one very dear to Chef Paul’s heart. It brings him back to his roots and allows him to show family, friends, and guests the true flavors of South Africa. This award-winning dish consists of four layers representing four different countries — India, Great Britain, France, and Holland.

INGREDIENTS — SERVES 4-6 • 4 ramekins • 3 slices of flaky pastry crust • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 large onions, roughly chopped • 4 teaspoons medium curry powder • 1 teaspoon dried herbs (whatever you’ve got around - oregano, basil, marjoram, etc.)

• 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 1 1/2 pound ground beef • 1 can pureed carrots • 1 large potato • 1/2 cup heavy cream • 1/2 cup fruit chutney • 1 tablespoon apricot jam • Zest and juice of one medium lemon, divided • Salt and pepper DIRECTIONS • Preheat your oven to 350°F. • Heat the olive oil in a wide skillet set over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the onions, and cook until soft.

• Skin and boil your potato. Once it is al dente, add your carrot puree and heavy cream and mash to a smooth consistency. Add some salt and pepper for flavor and set to the side. This is your carrot bredie.

• Add the curry powder, mixed herbs, ground cumin, turmeric, and garlic, and stirring constantly, allow to cook for a minute or two until the garlic is soft.

• Add the ground beef, and cook, stirring frequently to break up any big chunks, until browned.

• Once the beef is browned, remove the skillet from the heat and place a layer in each ramekin • Add a layer of carrot bredie in each ramekin • Place the flaky pastry crust on top on top of each ramekin • Bake, uncovered, at 350°F for 15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Hailing from South Africa, a melting pot of culinary influences, Chef Paul first worked in a family restaurant as a teenage busboy and waiter before traveling through Europe. With a backpack, bus passes, train tickets, and lodging in hostels, he soaked up the culture and cuisine of five countries.

“My inspiration and cooking lessons came from those experiences,” he explains.

Then it was onward to America and his own lineup of 58 restaurants over a 40-plus year career, including pizzerias. He sold the last Paul’s Pizza Shop across from Klein High School in 2004, and it still bears his name. He was operating Peli Peli when he made an appearance on Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen, and also won in an episode of CNBC’s Restaurant Startup.

Today, Chef Paul is the proud owner of Chef’s Table, located in Vintage Park.

PASSATELLI IN BRODO This soup recipe is a traditional dish from the Emilia-Romagna region in Italy, where Nonna Elda is originally from.

INGREDIENTS — SERVES 6 • 5 oz breadcrumbs (made from stale bread that has become hard enough to grate) • 7 oz of Parmigiano Reggiano • 4 eggs • 1 tsp of flour • 1 tsp of finely chopped parsley • 8.5 cups of your favorite beef broth

DIRECTIONS • Mix dry ingredients together with eggs for a firm consistency to form a dough ball • Place the dough in a potato masher with large holes. Press the dough and pass it through the holes to form passatelli. Cut them about 3 inches long with a knife and place them on a lightly floured tray.

• Bring your broth to a boil and add your passatelli • Cook until they come to the surface • Serve with fresh grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese

Nonna Elda, the matriarch of the Orioli family, hails from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. She transported irreplaceable recipes to Venezuela when her restaurateur family immigrated after World War II. The family started over and eventually opened eight Italian restaurants, including an ocean-side hotel where fresh seafood was caught and served.

When hardships hit Venezuela, the family relocated to America, again with the Old World recipes intact. These heirloom treasures are foundational to the fare at Via Emilia Italian Restaurant, and influence dishes in all the Orioli restaurants, including Azzurro Italian Coastal Cuisine, slated to open in December this year.

The Orioli’s have built a stellar reputation with authentic cuisine and one of the largest vertical wine selections in The Woodlands — more than 350 wines and 3,000 bottles. Nonna Elda, her son Carlos, and her grandson Enrique are co-owners of the Orioli Restaurant Group, and family means everything. After two years of canceled or virtual events, Memorial Hermann’s In the Pink of Health luncheon will be held live October 14, 2022 at the Woodlands Waterway Marriott.

“We could not be happier to host our 22nd Annual, In the Pink of Health luncheon in person this year. The funds we raise from this event support free mammograms, awareness and education about breast and ovarian cancer, and a multitude of resources for cancer patients through Canopy Cancer Survivorship Center,” says Linda Nelson, one of the original visionaries of In the Pink of Health and currently the Director of Business Development, Marketing and Community Relations at Memorial Hermann.

Unlike a pandemic, cancer doesn’t peak and go away. The American Cancer Society 2022 predicts 1.9 million new cancer cases this year, 609,360 will result in death. While breast cancer mainly affects women, approximately 2,710 new cases will be diagnosed in men. Ovarian cancer is the fifth-leading cause of cancer deaths in women with lung cancer taking first place.

“Our goal is always to raise money for our program. And going forward outreach and awareness education will also be a strong focus,” says Debra Cooper, Co-chair of In the Pink of Health. “We want people to know where they can go to receive support and help free of charge. It’s a yearlong campaign, not just a luncheon.”

Co-chairs, Debra Cooper and Dee Gelomini have been personally affected by cancer.

They are passionate about getting the word out about Canopy Cancer Survivorship Center. “It’s incredible to me that people still aren’t aware of who we are and do not

know about Canopy,” states Debra. “Come to Canopy, let us help you! We’re all in this together,” adds Dee. Canopy offers wigs, prostheses, art therapy, drama therapy, men’s lunch, emotional support, kids support, and more all free of charge no matter where you received treatment or what kind of cancer you have.

Some of the other free-of-charge resources funded by In the Pink of Health luncheon are Interfaith Community Clinic which offers free 3-D mammograms to under or uninsured women, The Rose for breast screening, diagnostics, and treatment for women of all ages. Ovarcome to assist in its mission to increase awareness of ovarian cancer and its symptoms, and to provide financial support to patients as well.

This year’s festivities will include “The Premiere Party” October 13 at The Peach Orchard venue, the In The Pink of Health luncheon—the largest luncheon ever held in The Woodlands, a live auction to include a two-year lease on a luxury sports car from Northside Imports, a raffle and loads of other incredible luxury prizes yet to be revealed.

“To walk in that huge room full of 1200 people all supporting ovarian and breast cancer initiatives, it’s pretty unreal. The support you feel in the room and the love you feel for the survivors is amazing. That’s the best part.” says Dee. Even with COVID putting a damper on live events for the past two years, sponsors continued to support and In the Pink of Health’s allocation committee disbursed $500,000 in January of 2022 to support cancer survivors in and around the greater Montgomery County area.

A one-of-a-kind cancer service center is in The Woodlands. Canopy Cancer Survivorship Center provides assistance for those with cancer, caregivers, and family members. From cooking and exercise classes, coffee chats, and more, Canopy offers a homey feeling in the heart of The Woodlands Medical Center.

Welcoming to all, Canopy is tucked away in Memorial Hermann and is a free center mainly run by volunteers.

Charon Edgington has found a home in Canopy first as a volunteer, and more recently, as a client.

A heartbreak no parent should ever have to go through, in 2008 Charon lost her six-year-old daughter Carlie to neuroblastoma cancer. After a long-fought threeyear battle, Charon turned to volunteer-work. Canopy’s mission of providing services to anyone going through cancer called to Charon. Her favorite way to give back is by helping with the kids cooking classes. Charon says, “I miss having my daughter to do that stuff with so I enjoy volunteering for that class especially.”

This past July, Charon was diagnosed with breast cancer and having a community to turn to during her cancer treatment was a huge comfort. Charon explains, ”not only have I been a volunteer, but I have also received some services for myself and they’re amazing.” Returning to Canopy as a client, “I went there and they gave me the welcome bag that we always gave out to other people.”

Charon has recently completed radiation treatment and has plans to return to Canopy soon. Once again as a volunteer.

Life is hard. Which is why God gave us Texas barbecue. Its charred exterior and deep smoky goodness are the stuff of dreams for any good carnivore. Sauce is nice, but not required. Just bring on the meats, please.

Looking forward to eating at your favorite barbecue joint is the prize that can get you through a real bummer of a workday. And yet, until recent years, it was not so easy to lay your hands on the good stuff.

Barbecue is a serious business. It takes a lot of love and knowhow to bring all the elements together that will produce tender, flavorful meat­—ribs with perfectly rendered fat, briskets with a beautiful crusty bark—each and every day. There are places that try hard for a while and then just fade away. To butcher an old saying: The road to barbecue anonymity is paved with good intentions.

The best Texas barbecue used to be a pilgrimage to get to. The places of lore were found in the small towns of Central Texas. “I used to stop all the time at City Market in Luling,” says Scott Moore, Jr., pitmaster and co-owner, along with his wife Michelle Holland and brother Greg, of the highly acclaimed Tejas Chocolate + Barbecue in Tomball. “Wait in line, go into the smoke room, pick your meat, go

back out and pay.” These joints were an outgrowth of the 19th-century butcher shops started by German and Czech immigrants in the region, says Scott. You ate your barbecue without utensils, off of butcher paper, used your pocketknife to cut the meat and maybe put it on a slice of bread. The original clientele would have been farmhands and laborers coming in for lunch, he says.

In the early days of Texas barbecue, smoking the meats was more of a preservation technique, says Will Buckman, pitmaster and co-owner, along with wife Nichole, of CorkScrew Barbecue in Old Town Spring, a joint that has received innumerable accolades and, along with Tejas, is a repeat Texas Monthly top-lister. These days, pitmasters have the technology and high-quality meats to take things to the next level, says Will.

That elevation started in the early 2000s, as hungry bbq nerds (like me) were growing in number. The wonders of Texas brisket and other smoked meats were revealed to the rest of the world outside of Texas through Calvin Trillin’s famous “By Meat Alone” essay for the New Yorker magazine, as well as through the CONTINUED >

Tejas Chocolate + BBQ Started as an artisanal chocolate craftory, barbecue was added to the menu when Tejas moved to its current location in Old Town Tomball back in 2015. “The meatheads got wind of us pretty quick,” says Scott Moore.

online posts of popular Texas barbecue blogs with zingy names like the “Texas Barbecue Posse” and “Full Custom Gospel Barbecue,” the latter written by Daniel Vaughn, then an architect by day, who in his free time made the rounds, visiting all the beloved Texas joints, displaying an amazing appreciation for and understanding of Texas barbecue culture, according to Eater.com. Those pithy blog posts led to his current, longtime gig as the firstever, full-time “Barbecue Editor” for Texas Monthly magazine (a job title that we don’t even bat an eye about now, but that at the time seemed pretty audacious). Every four years, Vaughn and his team put out their prestigious “Top 50” list of the best barbecue joints across the state, a list that is highly anticipated throughout the barbecue-loving world.

CorkScrew was already receiving praise from the Houston Chronicle when they made the Texas Monthly list for the first time back in 2013. “It solidified that the hard work and dedication had paid off. The feeling has never left. It’s incredible,” says Will.

Scott Moore recalls that in late 2016, Tejas had been open for about a year in its Old Town Tomball location and was gaining a steady following. (“That’s where social media is wonderful,” says Scott. “The meatheads got wind of us pretty quick.”)

One day, a group of Texas Monthly “secret shoppers” showed up, doing early stage vetting for the upcoming list. “They were asking questions about pits and smokers,” he says. The group didn’t announce who they were, and when Scott came by to check on their table, they put away notes they were scribbling.

A few weeks later, Daniel Vaughn walked in late on a Thursday.

“We do a big, beautiful pastrami beef rib on Thursdays. He got that, amongst other things. As he was leaving, he gave us some praise. We felt pretty good, and then a photographer visited.

Never said anything, we never asked. When the list came out, we were number six!”

Over the years, both joints have maintained spots on the list and are widely acknowledged as top Texas barbecue destinations, receiving additional attention on foodie-centric websites like Eater and Thrillist, as well as on cable television’s Food Network.

“The world has a fascination with all things Texas,“ says Scott.

But more than that, he says, the attention reveals an appreciation for the craftsmanship: creating a “barbecue essence” that

works to reveal flavors, not cover them up. At Tejas, that means using prime-grade meats and a blend of salt and pepper, along with the “third ingredient” of post oak smoke, says Scott.

Will Buckman agrees that it’s the meat that should take center stage in barbecue. He considers the CorkScrew style to be a hybrid, based on his own palate and those of his family and friends, developed over many years of smoking meats in his own backyard. “We had small children at home, had a small barbecue pit. It was something we did on the weekends.” Turn on the country music radio station, start a fire in the smoker, and cook whatever was on sale at the grocery store. “We enjoyed our kids and the evening, and it just took off on us,” he recalls.

At CorkScrew, Will uses red oak, which he says is the wood of choice for East Texas barbecue and imparts a more subtle flavor.

His seasoning rubs are more complex than those used in the Central Texas style, which prefers little or no seasoning.

At the end of the day, the final crucial ingredient at any great Texas barbecue joint is the commitment to maintaining consistency,

keeping the brisket and the ribs and the sausage flowing, meeting expectations every day you’re open.

“Today for instance. It’s Friday. At 1 p.m., I put on all the briskets for Saturday. I have someone who watches things overnight, and I’ll be back at 5 in the morning,” says Will. The briskets get pulled around 6 or 7 in the morning. For a Saturday, we do anywhere from 40 to 60 briskets.” More, if it’s a “bbq holiday” like July 4th or Memorial Day, he says.

We’re living in the Golden Age of Texas barbecue, and some of the best places in the state, the entire U.S. for that matter, are mere minutes from home. Along with Tejas and CorkScrew to enjoy, we now have a Killen’s Barbecue (also vaunted on the Texas Monthly list), opened in The Woodlands on Six Pines Drive by James Beard semifinalist Ronnie Killen last year. Also well-praised has been Reveille Barbecue, just down the road in Pinehurst. And more local places are on the rise, all putting in the hours, pushing the envelope, looking for new ways to satisfy the meatheads out there and make the honest flavors of Texas-style barbecued meats available right here in our own backyard.

No pilgrimage required.

Sundance reflects on the stories he shares through each lyric

Singing and playing music have always been synonymous with breathing for Montgomery County’s own Sundance Head. He grew up in a musical home as the son of legendary blue-eyed soul artist Roy Head. He began playing music at an early age, writing songs and later performing live across Texas. As he paved his own path in the music industry, his journey took him to the national spotlight, not once but twice.

In 2007, he was a Top 13 finalist on American Idol; and in 2016, he took home the top prize on season 11 of NBC’s The Voice.

He has experienced the ups and downs of the music industry but will be the first to tell you – every success and struggle has led him to where he is today – where he is meant to be – with the release of his new studio album, “Starting Again.”

Head penned nine of the album’s 11 songs – six on his own and three with co-writers. His vocal delivery perfectly marries country and soul in a way only he knows how. “I’m really proud of this album. It sounds 100% like my music,” said Head.

“Starting Again” is his second fulllength studio album since winning The Voice. While his previous album, “Stained Glass & Neon,” produced several chart-topping hits on the Texas music charts, Head felt the new record needed to take him full circle to the sound, emotion, and storytelling he first leaned on when he launched his career.

He began writing new music for the project in early 2020. When the pandemic halted live performances, he found time to reflect, reset and ultimately start again – which inspired the title of the album. But soon after he began the creative process, he was devasted by the sudden passing of his father. “My dad was my best friend by far; he was everything to me. I idolized him when I was a kid and even more when I grew up and understood the hardship of trying to subsidize a career and keep a family together,” he said.

His tour was still canceled, and he found himself depressed and unable to write. He needed a nudge – and he got one, thanks to Misty, his wife of 15 years. “She decided to buy studio time for me to record music I had already written. So, my band, which includes Dustin Edwards and Dave Walters, went to Stormy Cooper Media in Houston. I thought my wife bought a couple of days at the studio, but she bought five. We recorded everything I had the first day,” he said. “Then I went home, and I didn’t have any more songs. I was really bummed out because of everything that was going on. So, I sat down at the table and told myself – you’ve got studio time that’s been paid for, go ahead and write an album to tell people what you’ve been going through and how you feel about things.” And that is exactly what he did. He wrote the rest of the songs he needed to

His current single off the album is “Three People (Me, Jim Beam and You), inspired by an argument he overheard between his parents when he was a kid.

The album also includes a song Head wrote for his 14-year-old daughter, Percy. (He is also the proud father of two sons – Brazos River, age 8, and Levi, 15, whom he’s written songs for in the past.) Head calls “Starting Again” the most fantastic project he’s been a part of and hopes his fans will connect with the stories he shares through each lyric. “They’re events I’ve witnessed firsthand and feelings that go down to the deepest depths of my soul as a human being,” he said.

“That’s what I think makes this album different.”

Creating a restaurant around an almost mythical personality opens a world of possibilities.

More than a mere name, the idea of a captivating person, someone you’d love to know and hang out with, can bring a restaurant to life.

“THERE IS A PRINCESS IN EVERYONE’S LIFE” During their many years in the hotel industry, a restaurant idea began to take shape in the minds of brothers Preet Paul Singh and Surpreet Singh.

“We’d traveled quite a bit. Seen what restaurants the world over had to offer. We dreamt it in our heads, for a very long time,” says Surpreet.

The overarching premise would be built around their vision of a lovely, well-traveled woman, someone for whom every day was a celebration replete with lavish dinner parties, the finest food and wine from around the globe, great music, and opulent surroundings. Soon the brothers even had a name for her, Amrina, which in Hindi means “princess.” Since the restaurant’s namesake persona would always be looking for something new, the brothers wanted the restaurant to reflect this. “You can come here 7 days a week and have a different experience every time,” says Preet.

Located in Waterway Square, Amrina has an array of menus that offer the very best in fine global cuisine with an “Indian soul,” says acclaimed Chef Jaspratap “Jassi” Bindra, the restaurant’s executive chef and managing partner. Distinctive experiences are offered in different areas of the restaurant, among them, a sexy cocktail lounge, luxurious main dining and private dining areas, an in-kitchen chef’s table, a sleek tapas bar with its own

separate menu, and a beautiful, spacious patio. From caviar service, to tuna tartare, from pulled Tandoori leg of lamb to a Texassized 18-oz bone-in ribeye with a masala rub, to the deep and knowledgeable wine list created by Amrina’s general manager and beverage director Giorgio Ferrero, there’s something new around every corner.

The restaurant is open for lunch Tuesday through Friday, dinner Tuesday through Saturday, and for brunch on Sundays, with

special “dinner party” music and atmosphere starting at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. A luxe “after hours” social scene kicks into gear during the restaurant’s extended nightlife hours from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, complete with DJs and live music.

WHERE WOULD TOMMY DINE? The final days of a vacation are a wistful time, especially if you’re saying goodbye to the sandy beaches of the coast. It was just such a feeling that fueled the imaginations of two couples who spent their summers on the beaches of Florida each year. They consoled themselves by creating a persona who never had to leave. A fellow with impeccable style and independent means. They called him Tommy Bahama. What would Tommy wear? What would be his cocktail of choice? Where would he go for dinner?

Their storytelling turned into a powerful idea, says Rob Goldberg, Executive Vice President of Resorts, Restaurants & Bars for Tommy Bahama Group. The lifestyle brand celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2023, and its first restaurant happened

by accident 27 years ago in Naples, Florida as the company prepared to open a retail store there. “There was a space next to it that the same landlord owned, and he asked if we wanted it. It’s still our busiest restaurant!” he says.

That first success led to more locations, says Rob, with a focus on placing the restaurants in resort areas. “The Woodlands was one of our first locations that wasn’t in a resort setting. We had only opened in places like Hawaii, Florida and Palm Desert, California.” There was a really strong following of those resort restaurants from vacationers who called The Woodlands home, he says. “It’s a place that takes leisure and fun seriously and lives the resort lifestyle. We’ve found it to be a very social community.”

Rob says guests at the Market Street restaurant especially enjoy the shaded patio, which has its own full bar and a great view.

Guests can listen to live music every day of the week, and menu offerings reflect the way people like to eat today, says Rob, lively dishes that are made to the highest standards. In addition to a long list of enticing salads, such as the lump blue crab and avocado, entrees include local favorites like macadamia-encrusted snapper, ahi tuna tacos, and a Kona-coffee encrusted ribeye.

Beyond a persona, says Rob, Tommy is the spirit that undergirds the restaurant and all of its brand offerings. “There’s that kind of moment when you exhale and say, ‘Okay, I’m going to relax.’” That idea is not just for vacation,” says Rob. Tommy would definitely approve.

ART IN THE KEY OF LIFE There’s an angel by the roadside! Crouched atop a suitcase, a young male, with resting wings and a quiff in his hair, crouched, silent and contemplative, glancing down from his podium, cast in bronze, he rests tentatively by the pavement.

The angel, situated on a street lined with small businesses, offices, farmers markets and food venues, is an unexpected find! However, Artkey showroom owners, Bernardo Infante and Anna Marquez, have recently opened their premises here, and the angel heralds their arrival.

The Fundacion Artistica Neleco sculpture foundry was established in Mexico

by Bernardo’s father over fifty years ago.

Naturally, Bernardo became involved with the business at a young age, and has spread his wings into the USA, introducing Artkey to The Woodlands area.

Providing a start-to-finish service, from an initial idea to the final installation, Artkey works with independent sculptors and foundry artisans to create a classic art form which will outlive us all. Casting statues for government offices, churches and cathedrals, memorials, public spaces and smaller personal commissions are all part of the Artkey service.

Traditionally, bronze has been the metal of choice, however, recent commissioned pieces have included those cast in stainless steel, resulting in a modern, contemporary look. Initially, the piece is sculpted by hand in clay, followed by a lengthy process of molds, silicon, fiberglass and wax before finally pouring the molten bronze, and allowing it to set. Next the sculpture is revealed before the

finishing work can take place, polishes and colored patinas are set with fire for permanence and protection against the elements. It can take around 20 people to create just one piece. “The process involved is a slow one, and must be, so to incorporate the essence of the artist”, says Bernardo.

People commission all sorts of sculptures, everything from the magnificent, significant, political and religious figures for public spaces, animals and symbolic pieces for private estates, parks and community spaces, to smaller quirkier projects, as well as family pets or scaled-down versions of larger pieces.

Closely working with Mexican sculptor, Alejandro Velasco, the artist behind the angel, “Analizando el Viaje’. The angel, like all Velascos work, is an emotional piece, Velasco describes the piece as representing “my wish to be free, the angel is resting on the journey to the light and has put everything from his life into the suitcase, feelings, work, experience, it is a quest for freedom, a new life and the wish to be born again,” analyzing the trip of life and the inevitable emotional baggage that comes with it.

Velasco, born in 1959, previously worked as an architect in 1980’s Mexico City, so has a feel for marrying architecture with sculpture. He also became the “hands” of British surrealist artist Leonora Carrington, creating sculptures from her paintings, she guided him in her final years when she was unable to sculpt.

Artkey, being the sole representative of Velasco’s work in the USA, showcase his time-honored works inspired by nature and

the human form which are presented alongside his more abstract and surreal pieces. We see lots of leaves, horses, wings, works steeped in symbolism and fantasy, at one with nature, dreams, and mythology, the suitcase is prevalent in many of his works. One of his favorite pieces, “Kocco y sus Amigos”, was created for his granddaughter, Kocco and her friends, portrayed as a carefree happy band, sailing in a boat on wheels, with musical instruments and monkey tails, representing the mischievous nature of the children, is cast in bronze. This enormous interactive piece won 6 medals at the prestigious Festival Internacional Cervantino in Guanajuato, Mexico, and held 40 people inside the boat structure, as well as the children! A scaled-down version is available from Artkey.

Maintaining this classic art form into today’s modern society is a wonderful way to respect and acknowledge tradition, as more art becomes digital and disposable, it’s a delight to retain these classic art practices as well as having the availability of these eternal treasures within our reach.
