The Style Issue Style means different things to different people. Here in Texoma, style is individual, creative, easygoing. Throughout our area, style changes depending on where you hang your hat. Pottsboro is still small town charm where western meets lake living. Denison has a flair for the artistic, a little more casual and a little more creative. Sherman, as the county seat of Grayson County, has more of an urban influence mixed with an anything goes vibe.

I remember when I first arrived in Texoma, I took in the local wine tasting festival in Sherman. I made my way around the tasting introducing myself to residents as I enjoyed local music, people, and of course, wine. I'll never forget one of my first meetings that night, I was met with "You aren't from around here. Where are you from?" I thought how can they tell I am new here?

It's my style. I came to Sherman, but brought a little back from home with me in the way I dress. I still do, as my style is part of who I am. It is different from some, but I have learned that is just fine with the people of Texoma. Texoma is a welcoming community that is accepting of all people and all styles!

Are you looking to make your porch the next big thing? Terramania’s own, Traci Miller, walks you through how to get your front door step ready for the fall season. Let’s give your porch that front porch appeal!

Traci’s Tips for your porch: • Ask yourself…For your front porch, how do you want people to feel when they walk inside your home?

• Treat your porch like another room in your house. Your porch is an extension of your home, so have fun!

• “Don’t try to be perfect. Just play, there is no right or wrong. Don’t be afraid, just do it.” says Traci Miller, owner and designer with Terramania.

Traci’s steps for that front porch appeal: 1. Flooring. Start from the bottom up. For your floors, add a rug and layer it with other pieces. These rugs can be textured, with warm tones and neutrals.

2. Furniture. This is where you will find your wooden tables, chairs, and swings. Add life to your furniture by incorporating table trays paired with a throw, green plants, food, and drink, as well as earthy tones. Make it homey, your own, and authentic.

3. Build. In building, you can play around with heights, levels, and grouping. Try placing your planters on a platform instead of on the floor. Enhance the atmosphere of your front porch by incorporating a mix of large and small pots. Try mixing the old with the new - that vintage vase…don’t throw it out, use it!

For the first time, decorator: Find your inspiration. Scroll through Pinterest, hone in on your style, and discover what you like and what is calling your name.

For the seasoned decorator: Try something new! Go big, buy the vintage, timeless, and old. Find something that has a story.

Courtney Mitchell of Courtney Mitchell Photography in Sherman is a crafty, artsy, and creative individual. Her style reflects the same high level of energy and creativity.

Courtney admits, “I like color, bright but not loud. I don’t want to get noticed for what I am wearing, but I do like to stand out.” The style choices she makes for herself bring her energy.

On a day-to-day basis, you will find Courtney in a graphic T and a favorite pair of jeans. “I wear clothing in the studio that allows me to move, get on the floor, and at times get dirty,” Courtney explained. In the hot summer in Texas and early fall, Courtney agrees that everyone needs a good pair of linen pants. Her go-to is an evil eye necklace with a turquoise stone in it. “Much like the rest of my wardrobe, it is eclectic mixed with understated refinement. While it stands out, it goes with everything,” Courtney shared.

When working with clients in her studio, Courtney encourages them to wear clothing and accessories that make them feel confident and comfortable. She doesn’t

want her clients to look too matchy-matchy, but instead coordinated. She encourages them to consider styles and colors that complement their figures and personalities.

She suggests bringing several outfit changes, as she loves to mix and match, creating a unique and personal look for each client. This approach ensures that each client feels special and valued.

Courtney and her team specialize in printed portraits, offering beautiful, lasting artwork that you and your family can treasure for generations to come. “We are creating art pieces that you’ll want to hang in your home over your mantel or display on your coffee table.” The studio, located on S. Lucas Ridley Ray’s Mercantile

Lucas Ridley, owner of Ray’s Mercantile in the Katy Depot in Denison, brings an old-school charm to town with a nod to the past, but with a modern twist.

Lucas described his style as “preppy western” or “modern western”. His go-to wardrobe choices include lots of denim, a well-fitting suit jacket, and a pair of wellworn boots. Fashion for men is all about the fit. “I am not very tall, so I want a jacket that is going to fit my frame well,” Lucas explained. When your fit is correct, it helps you to feel confident and highlights your features. Lucas looks for timeless pieces, not too much cowboy, but a hint of western pride. These timeless pieces not only make you feel confident but also ensure you always look stylish.

Ray’s Mercantile offers a diverse selection of home goods, gifts, and clothing for both men and women. Lucas subscribes to a philosophy that “fashion should be affordable.” One of the few boutiques in the North Texas area to feature men’s clothing, Ray’s offers a wide range of styles and sizes to fit men in the community. The mercantile is described as bold, playful, western-inspired, and full of personality.

Jason Badgett is the founder and owner of Absolute Aesthetics, located in Denison. In both his personal life and business, he subscribes to a philosophy of Beauty and Balance. For Jason, this means that fashion and self-care shouldn’t be about covering up; it is about curating and elevating who you already are.

He believes that it takes the same amount of energy to put on something thoughtful, tailored, and polished as it does to throw on a stretched-out t-shirt and worn-out shorts.

Jason would describe his style as intentional. He liked to be polished, a little elevated, and bold in his wardrobe choices.

Nothing too loud, but something with a bit of sparkle, structure,

and a touch of softness. Jason is drawn to luxury, but he always wants to be grounded, so it visibly flows, and he feels like himself. His go-to is a well-fitted shirt with subtle details, paired with a sleek, designer belt that can tie an outfit together without drawing attention.

Jason explained, “It’s less about looking expensive; it’s about wearing things that remind you of your worth.”

Jason sees many trends come and go in his business. As with fashion, the current trend in skin care is “quiet luxury.” It’s all about minimal routines with high-quality, multitasking products. Jason tells his clients, “Don’t chase trends; instead, chase what fits your skin and your energy.” If something trendy resonates with you, make it your own; if it doesn’t, let it pass. Your personal style is the most timeless trend.”

When you meet Jason at the office or in the gym, you will find he has an authentic, natural approach to people. He wants to help every person accentuate their best features, feel inspired by their beauty, and never forget to invest in themselves.

Although Jennifer appreciates the success she has found, being a caterer in Texoma was not quite on her radar when she moved to the area.

“I thought I was going to be a stay-at-home mom when I moved here. That lasted three months!” She has years of experience in the food service industry and even owned her restaurant in Fort Smith, Arkansas, before moving here in 2011, when she opened Bay at the Lake and eventually Blue Willow Cafe, which are now under the umbrella of Bon Appétit Y’all.

When asked about her food styles, Jennifer says that she has become known for creating menus that are very much like comfort food. “We want to make and provide the kind of food that makes you feel at home. We want to bring people to the table for an experience that makes a memory that lasts a lifetime. I think what people will remember is the presentation. You have to have a great presentation. The Season of Firsts

Texoma FC, based in Sherman, Texas, kicked off its first professional season in USL League One in March 2025 at Historic Bearcat Stadium under the leadership of Sporting Director–Head Coach Adrian Forbes and President Ben Watson. As of the end of July, the club stood 7th in the league, with a mixed record of five wins, five draws, and six losses. This performance doesn’t tell the whole story.

From its humble beginning as nothing more than a dream, the club faced substantial challenges at the start of the season. From immigration to even the weather, it seemed that the inaugural season was destined to be nothing more than “an opportunity to build,” as one fan put it. After suffering a string of defeats and draws at the outset of play, the team coalesced and began to operate as a unit, winning several games in a row, including handing a defeat to last season’s champion. And while both the U.S. Open Cup and USL Cup campaigns are still ongoing, Texoma FC has advanced to Round 1 of the Open Cup and is competing in the USL Cup group stage.

Texoma FC's defense has generally held firm, though consistency remains a work in progress. As one fan notes, “One Knox has great defense, so the fact that Texoma was able to get five shots on goal is impressive.”

Coach Forbes seems to emphasize cohesion: “I’m now building the squad to actually coach the squad as well, something you’d never see in the UK,” hinting at an emphasis on tactical growth.

Goal-scoring started slowly but has gained substantial momentum. “Our biggest challenge this year will be

scoring goals. We do great things in midfield, with little or no end product,” a supporter observed. Some matches ended in clean sheets without goals—strong defense but limited finishing. However, there are early flashes of attacking flair, with some later fixtures featuring three and four goals scored.

Forward Ajmeer Spengler has led the line with four goals, making him both league and season top scorer.

His form earned him USL League One Player of the Week honors in Week 16. Loan signing Diego Pepi from FC Dallas has turned heads, while veteran winger and two-time Phoenix Rising MVP Solomon Asante brings pedigree and skill. USL previewers wrote Texoma FC is “hoping for Asante Magic in USL Jägermeister Cup.” With 11 appearances and several goals so far, Asante’s creative influence is emerging as a real asset.

Early-season was riven with talk of turnover and pending arrivals: “As of the start of play, we had five players in other countries waiting on visas,” with expectations of defensive improvement upon their arrival. The coaching staff, led by Forbes, prioritized building squad cohesion before refining attacking transitions.

Adrian Forbes, transitioning from an English Premier League academy role, has both acknowledged the challenges of launching a new club and expressed optimism about its development. Preseason, in a BBC interview, he said, “This is too good an opportunity to turn down” and expressed pride in shaping a brand‑new US club. Internally, he emphasized developmental steps, focusing on a process that involves implementing a playing philosophy, establishing training routines, and integrating signings like Asante and Pepi. A strong defensive shape is evident, and although the team has struggled to convert midfield control into consistent scoring, late-season performance suggests a trend towards increased conversion.

Texoma FC’s local impact has been swift. The club has averaged over 1,200 fans per match (with a 1,266 average attendance across all competitions), peaking at 3,209 spectators for the opener against One Knoxville on March 22 despite low attendance in the preseason.

Owners highlight long-term vision. From the club’s May 2024 launch, former CEO Simon Keizer stated: “Adrian’s passion for people, community, development … exemplifies the heartbeat of all we aspire to build here with Texoma FC.” President Ben Watson added,

“Adrian resembles everything we have been interviewing for… We could not be more thrilled!” Their message has been clear: growth on the field and impact off it. The club’s slogan, “United For Soccer,” underscores a mission to unify the Texoma region through sport. The leadership team’s long-term vision includes a future purpose-built stadium, growth of the youth academy, and Texoma’s integration into the broader US soccer landscape.

Texoma FC’s inaugural USL League One campaign paints the picture of a club laying down solid roots. On the field, it's a story of resilient defense, flashes of attacking brilliance, and growing chemistry. Off-field, it’s a tale of visionaries with Forbes, West, and Watson aligning community, long-term infrastructure, and local pride. As summer gives in to autumn, Texoma faces the classic expansion-team crossroads: can they shift from character-building to consistent performance and sustained growth?

Texoma residents are fortunate to have the opportunity to celebrate many extraordinary community events. Still, one of the longest-running and very best can be found each year in the city of Pottsboro.

Frontier Day has been the city’s most celebrated event since 1876. The celebration can be traced back to the annual Shawnee cattle drives, where the drives would stop and camp along the creek in Pottsboro as they made their way to Fort Worth. To celebrate the history of the drive and to bring the citizens of Pottsboro and Texoma together, the Pottsboro Chamber of Commerce holds this event each year.

According to Missy Weaver, the Director of the Pottsboro Chamber of Commerce, this event is very special. “Frontier Day is our community’s biggest annual celebration and will take place on Saturday, September 27, 2025. This year’s theme is Cowboy Boots and Community Roots. I feel like this theme captures what Pottsboro is all about, which is honoring tradition and supporting local businesses. We will have something for everyone.”

“Kids will enjoy family activities, and we will have plenty of opportunities to shop local and connect with neighbors. Frontier Village will be conducting historical re-enactments throughout the day. We will have a parade, which will kick off the day and will showcase the creativity of local businesses, organizations, and community groups.

There will be an incredible car show and a huge vendor market where we will feature a wide variety of opportunities to shop local.”

When asked why Frontier Day is so important, Missy had an enthusiastic response. “Frontier Day is more than an event. It’s about bringing our community together, boosting local businesses, and creating a sense of pride in Pottsboro. It is also an opportunity for people from surrounding areas to visit and experience what makes our town special. Frontier Day is about celebrating who we are as a community - our heritage, our businesses, and the people who make Pottsboro such a special place to live.”

We’re talking cocktails, not the catwalk. But like fashion, the art of mixology is full of ways to push the limits with creative twists on classic recipes, and unique adornments guaranteed to turn heads. 2 ounces Absolut Citron 1/2 ounce Blue Curaçao 1/2 ounce lemonade 1 ounce Sprite Edible flowers such as rose, lavender, hibiscus and nasturtiums

DIR ECTIONS: Pour Sprite into ice cube trays and add edible flower combinations. Let freeze overnight.

Combine Absolut Citron, Blue Curaçao, lemonade and ice cubes in martini shaker. Shake and strain into a martini glass.

Allow ice cubes to melt, gradually filling the glass with Sprite and garnishing the drink with beautiful botanicals.

• thyme simple syrup • 1/2 cup sugar • 1/2 cup water • 1 bunch thyme • 2 fresh figs • 3/4 ounce lemon juice • 3/4 ounce thyme syrup • 3/4 ounce Sprite

In a small saucepan, simmer sugar, water and thyme leaves over low heat for 5 minutes or until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and let the thyme infuse into the syrup for at least 10 minutes.

For the cocktail, muddle figs and lemon juice in the bottom of a glass. Add ice, 3/4 of the thyme syrup and Sprite. Stir and garnish with fig and a sprig of thyme.

One of my happy places is sitting in front of a museum wall gallery. I can admire art for hours, and if I’m with a friend, there’s no telling how long we’ll sit, reflect, and share our individual perspectives. If you’ve admired gallery wall displays in magazines, catalogs, or on social media and would like to create one in your home, it’s much easier than you might think.

WHY CHOOSE A GALLERY WALL HANGING SYSTEM? The beauty of a gallery wall hanging system lies in its flexibility and ease of use. Traditional picture hanging methods can leave walls full of holes, making it cumbersome to adjust placements or update the display. A hanging system, however, allows for easy adjustments without additional damage to your walls.
