October is one of our most delectable issues of the year, and this month we’re celebrating the food and drink that makes Texoma such a delight for the senses.

We had the privilege of sitting down with the new chef at The Grill at 84 West to learn all about their fall menu, brimming with seasonal ingredients and dishes designed to make your taste buds sing. You’re in for a treat, so get ready to savor every bite.

We meet the owners of Hey Sugar and hear of their expansion in downtown Denison. This local business will be a sweet treat for our community!

We are launching our newest feature this month called Readers Recommend. We asked - and you shared - your favorite spots to score a great pizza in Texoma. Fall is the best season for pizza as it makes the perfect post-game meal.

We hope you dig in to all our Food & Drink issue has to offer! Don't miss the fall festival season by checking out the local events on page 18.

As always, thank you for reading and we will see you around town!

HEY SUGAR

Expanded Ice Cream Creamery And Parlor Coming To Downtown Denison

ARTICLE BY MIKE ZAPATA | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY
HEY SUGAR

Hey Sugar, downtown Denison’s well-known candy store and ice cream shop, is excited to announce the expansion of its current downtown location into a dedicated ice cream creamery and parlor. The new facility will be just down the street from the current facility on Main Street. After the expansion is complete, customers will be able to see their ice cream being made and will be able to purchase and enjoy it in their new creamery.

Tony Kaai, President of the Denison Development Alliance, looks forward to the continued growth, revitalization, and development in downtown Denison. “We are so excited to partner with Hey Sugar and get them into a larger facility to meet their needs. This will be something very special to our downtown and it will bring a unique experience for our residents and visitors. Having a boutique ice cream shop and creamery will be something you can’t find in very many places. Since this is a real creamery, you will actually be able to see your ice cream being made and know you are getting the freshest ice cream possible. This is a great project and what’s more fun than ice cream?”

Jeff Persichitte, President and CEO of Hey Sugar, is equally enthusiastic about the new creamery coming to downtown Denison. "This has been an exciting project to see develop. The Denison Development Alliance has been great to work with, and I feel like we have a strong team in Denison. It is exciting to be a part of the growth in Denison, which is another reason we wanted to do our expansion here.”

Currently, Hey Sugar operates a candy store and ice cream parlor in downtown but the new expansion will allow them to separate their operations into a dedicated creamery. Persichitte says the new direction the company is currently pursuing is one of the reasons for the Denison creamery.  “We are a small batch ice cream producer, and our current facility in Southlake is struggling to meet the demand. We need a new facility to make enough ice cream for our shops. That is another reason we are excited to reinvest in Denison and double down. We will be the same company but under a different banner. Our ice cream will be under the banner of TX Creamery."

“With the success we have had with our current downtown Hey Sugar location, our company’s growth, and the great partnership we have with the City of Denison and the Denison Development Alliance, I can say we are really excited about our future. At the end of the day, this is where we want to be.”

Jeff continues, "The timing is great. We have been improving our practices to have cleaner ice cream which means no artificial colors, no corn syrup, no preservatives. We will use a high butter fat content to get a creaminess you can’t find everywhere. It is going to be unique and fun and as healthy as we can make ice cream be. You will feel better about eating our ice cream, and you will definitely be able to tell the difference in our quality and flavors. Since it will be made on-site, visitors can actually see the ice cream being made keeping it fresh. We will have over forty flavors available."

Hey Sugar looks forward to bringing this new expansion to Main Street, Denison. “We prefer to do business with those who want to do business with us," says Jeff. "With the success we have had with our current downtown Hey Sugar location, our company's growth, and the great partnership we have with the City of Denison and the Denison Development Alliance, I can say we are really excited about our future. At the end of the day, this is where we want to be.”

Hey Sugar TX Creamery is expected to be completed early next year, in 2026.  Until then, you can visit the current Hey Sugar location for candy and ice cream at 422 W. Main St., Denison, Texas.

INTERIOR HOMESTORE OPEN HOUSE

Early Holiday Annual Must-Attend Event

It is October, and it's never too early to plan your home's holiday look.

On Saturday, October 18th, Carol Davis and her team at Sherman's Interior HomeStore will be opening their doors to share the experience of their "Enchanted Forest".  The team has been hard at work since the Dallas Christmas Market in January. This year's theme is nature-inspired and brought

to life with a color palette of deep greens, earthy browns, and touches of gold or silver. It incorporates woodland creatures like owls, deer, and foxes, and uses natural elements like pinecones, berries, and faux greenery. Fairy lights, faux ivy, and moss will create a magical, ethereal glow as soon as you walk in the front door. You will instantly feel the magic of the holiday season!

Scheduled for the third Saturday of October, the  Interior HomeStore Open House has become an early holiday must-attend event. As soon as the temperatures start to get cooler and leaves start to fall, customers are ready to stop in and explore the beautifully arranged displays, helping them

transition from Fall to Christmas. Stop by the store for tasty treats and special drinks, and take a minute to register for one of the fabulous door prizes.

Even if you have a closet full of holiday decor, Carol shares some thoughts about updating your decorations: "It is always fun to open your

Christmas boxes to reveal your 'favorite memories’ from years past. We encourage our customers to do a little decluttering to update their look without starting completely over. If you rearrange and display your existing holiday décor, perhaps in another room, then you can consider new textures, colors, or themes."

Carol and her team offer in-home or in-store

Interior Decorating Design services for home furnishings, lighting, rugs, and remodeling solutions. You can learn more about the store and get up-to-date information about

events, including the upcoming Interior HomeStore Open House  on October 18th, as well as the  Holiday Girls Night Out Party on the first Friday in December, on their website, InteriorHomeStore.com

BOOT SCOOTIN’ FOR A PURPOSE

The Boot Scootin’ Ball in Pottsboro is one of Texoma’s biggest parties and the largest fundraising event for the Preston Volunteer Emergency Services [PVES] which provides urgent medical assistance to the North Texas Regional Airport, Pottsboro, Locust, and the Preston Peninsula. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, this event has raised over three million dollars for PVES. These funds have been instrumental in providing much-needed equipment such as modernized ambulances and fire trucks, advanced cutting-edge and life-saving equipment, and comprehensive training for the Preston Volunteer Emergency Services.  This year's event will be held at the Bar-K-R Ranch in Pottsboro on October 25, 2025.

Nancy Anderson, the original Sponsor Chair for the event, was instrumental in getting the event established as she and others realized there was a need to support the volunteer emergency services. Nancy said they brainstormed ways to raise funds.  “We tried a lot of ideas like golf tournaments and other things, but this was the event that really began to grow and provide the much-needed funding

for our small volunteer organization. Our first event drew 200 people and has continued to grow as the lake population has grown. Last year’s event had over 300 attendees and raised over 450,000 dollars. This year we are likely to have even more attendees!"

Stacy Ceci, the current Director of Sponsorship, was chosen by Nancy to take over and continue the tradition of raising funds through this annual event.  Stacy, a retired school principal and wife of current Pottsboro Mayor Tom Ceci, began volunteering with the organization in 2023 after she retired and found herself with extra time.

Boot Scootin’ Ball Celebrates 25 Years
Tom and Stacy Ceci

She was able to successfully manage the details of chairing the event with the help of Nancy and others and thinks this year’s Boot Scootin’ Ball may be the best one yet. “This year’s event is going to include The Diamond West Band from Dallas, great food, dancing, live and silent auctions, and of course a few beverages. This fundraiser lets our neighbors, local businesses and residents

meet and get to know each other while supporting a great cause. The Preston Volunteer Emergency Services would not be able to stay in business without the funds raised from this event. It is challenging to put this together, but we have great volunteers and amazing sponsors helping to make it a success. Our volunteers pour their hearts into this. We meet some great friends through this, and we become like a family.  A lot of people don’t realize what it takes to put on an event of this size. However, it all comes together and everyone has a great time as we raise funds so our Preston Volunteer Emergency Services can continue to do amazing work serving our residents."

To purchase tickets to the event, be a sponsor, or sign up to volunteer, you can visit the event's website at BootScootinBall.com or visit their Facebook page.

THE GRILL & VENUE AT 84 WEST

New Chef Serves Creative And Fresh Meals

One of the best dining secrets in Texoma is welcoming two new chefs to their staff. The Grill & Venue at 84 West, known for its fine dining and incredible views, is continuing its practice of providing a wonderful dining experience for Texoma residents.

General Manager, Hope Ohashi, is excited to announce the hiring of new chef, Kirby Pratt, and sous chef, Mitchell Thatcher. “As General Manager since our opening, I’ve poured my heart into building more than just a restaurant - it is an experience. Bringing on Chef Kirby Pratt ensures that same dedication carries into the kitchen. Chef Pratt brings both creativity and strength to our team and I am confident her leadership will enhance everything we do here.”

Chef Pratt, a lifetime Texoma resident and trained culinary chef, is excited to continue bringing amazing meals and desserts to The Grill at 84 West.  “I have been in this area for my entire life and I am so happy to bring my experiences along with Chef Mitchell's to the restaurant. I have always had a passion for cooking. At a very young age, I realized that cooking offered me an opportunity

to be creative -  to me, it is an art.  While I did learn a lot obtaining my culinary degree, I feel like experience and experimentation have been my biggest avenues of learning. That feeling of being able to create through food and bring people together to make those lifetime memories is something that is so important to me."

Sous chef Mitchell Thatcher agrees, “I grew up farm side. My passion has always been to see how food gets to the table, from how crops are grown and harvested to how the livestock gets raised and prepared. Going back to our roots gets us in touch with our food and helps us build lasting memories. Our goal here is to see everyone walk out of our restaurant with smiles on their faces. I love creative expression in the foods we prepare. Although I really enjoy creating all meals, I get a special pleasure creating some of our desserts. Our cheesecake is incredible! They are created in house from scratch. Our pastries are outstanding and I know our customers will enjoy every bite."

Both Chef Pratt and Thatcher are excited to bring their combined talents to the kitchen. The partnership they have developed over the years from working together has allowed them to explore their creativity with different dishes and to create some unique and delicious meals. “I think our customers are going to enjoy our new dining direction. People want to know that the food they eat is fresh and delicious. Our goal is to create a complete farm-to-table experience for our diners. We want to be a one hundred percent scratch restaurant." In addition to a few menu favorites, the chefs at The Grill at 84 West plan to offer more options and can even work with those with special dietary needs.  If you eat gluten-free, keto, low sodium, or any other dietary restriction, they will adjust the food to meet your needs in a delicious dish. Chef Pratt maintains, "I want everyone to leave happy, create wonderful memories, and feel good about bringing their friends and family to share a meal in our restaurant.”   The Grill & Venue at 84 West,  5216 FM84, Denison, TX

BRAZEN & BOLD

Solo Lash-Artist-Turned-Vault-Visionary Builds Boutique Haven For Local Beauty Entrepreneurs

ARTICLE BY KATELYN BRISCOE
PHOTOGRAPHY BY COURTNEY MITCHELL

“Brazen”—a word meaning bold and without shame, there could not be a more fitting word to describe the mind and owner behind one of Denison’s hidden gems, Brazen Beauty Vault. After being told she was “too independent” and that she “needed to be on her own” by a previous employer, Heidi Taylor leaped and used what little savings she had to open her own lash studio in downtown Denison.

While Heidi says the original location was great, the price of the room she rented was beyond her means. Heidi ended up finding an entire building that was the same price as her room alone in the previous location, affording her the possibility of renting out suites for other services. It was here that the name and vision for Brazen Beauty Vault were born.

“I just wanted a name that was unique and bold,” Heidi said. “…especially the vault, because there are so many different things inside here.”

On her own, Heidi previously owned Taylored Lash Bar, but since moving to the new space, she rebranded over the last year to reflect the growth in her business and the variety of services offered in the new space.

“I've worked very hard to build my clientele and get my name out there,” Heidi said.

Within the vault, Heidi maintains her lash practice and also houses Licensed Massage Therapist Lisa Erwin, Whimsical Waxing & Esthetics owner Hannah Monroe, Skin Haven Esthetics owner Haylie Stephens, KayleesNailz owner Kaylee Deering, and their fifth and final room is in the works for Ryleigh Stephenson with Rave Esthetics by Ry. Heidi has

“The vibe that we bring is definitely a more bougie vibe, but also tranquil,” Heidi said. “As soon as you walk in, you’re relaxed. It’s just very open and inviting.”

clearly opened up opportunities for beauty self-starters, but also says Brazen Beauty Vault brings a unique feel to Denison and the Texoma area.

“The vibe that we bring is definitely a more bougie vibe, but also tranquil,” Heidi said. “As soon as you walk in, you're relaxed. It's just very open and inviting.”

Each detail is designed with the client in mind. They offer drinks, snacks, and a coffee bar for clients to make it homey for them. Each conscious design decision points to the feeling Heidi says she wants all clients to walk away with:

“One word,” Heidi said. “Easy, very simple: relaxed.”

The Owen Academy Happy Halloween!

At The Owen Academy, we believe every child should feel celebrated for who they are, especially during a season that reminds us it's okay to dress up, dream big, and be whoever you want to be. We take the time to truly understand your child—not just their diagnosis. By learning their likes, dislikes, strengths, and interests, we create a therapy environment that feels safe, playful, and full of imagination.

After assessment and enrollment, we carefully pair your child with a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) who fits their personality and learning style—making therapy both meaningful and fun.

This Halloween and beyond, we’re here to walk alongside your family, encouraging your child to grow with confidence, creativity, and joy— cape, costume, or not.
