For The Gents

An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone push ing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make on our lives.
My Daddy, 98 years young, has always been a role model for me. He was raised on a farm near the Panhandle but raised four city-dwellers of his own in the heart of Dallas. He has seen and experienced more than I can imagine in the last almost century of life. He leads an understated quiet life as if back on that farm where he was raised. I have learned over the years that he helped many, quietly, not wanting any recognition but just wanting to offer a hand up. He inspires me to try to be the same for others in my community.
This month we celebrate men! Take the men in your life out to enjoy adventures on Lake Texoma, enjoy cigars and bourbon at a local lounge, or catch a free concert at Hot Summer Nights. Be inspired by a few locals who write a letter to their younger selves, and impart wisdom to the next generation.
To all of the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it.
Thank you for reading our Gentlemen's Issue, and we'll see you around town!

The Great Outdoors Are Waiting For You This Summer
ARTICLE BY SHARLA DAVENPORT
ADVENTURES ON THE WATER

Summer is the season to break free from routine and dive into the thrill of outdoor activities. With longer days and warmer weather, there is no better time to be outside. Living in Texas provides many opportunities to experience fun in the sun and water.
From over 7,000 lakes and 350 miles of coastal shoreline, there are many ways to embrace summer. When you think of being out on the water, whether it is on a lake or beach, many activities come to mind like fishing, boating, jet skiing, kayaking, canoeing, plus scuba diving and snorkeling.
For most Texans, a summer isn’t a summer without some form of lake life. Lake Texoma, one of the closest lakes nearby, is called the “Playground of the Southwest”. Lake Texoma attracts over six million visitors a year, many of whom bring their boats for water skiing, tubing, and of course, the abundant striper and bass fishing. Additionally, the lake is full of jet skis dashing across the water.
Longtime Celina resident Greg Jones has been taking his family of six to Lake Texoma since 2016. You will find the Jones family either on their boat, a jet ski, or hanging out in a cove on the water, or with friends at their dockominium. “Our family spends as much time as possible at the lake. It’s one of our favorite summer activities,” says Greg. “We have so many friends from Celina who join us there, as well as the Texoma friends we have met over the years,” he continued. There is nothing like freedom on the water. Don’t have a boat or maybe don’t want to mess with the hassle of boat ownership? You can still enjoy the lake as a member of the Freedom Boat Club located at Lake Texoma Grandpappy Point. Freedom Boat Club nationwide has over 5,000 boats to support your boating needs. As noted on their website, “from center consoles and

pontoons to bowriders, offshore fishing boats and wake boats, we have it all.” You just show up. Freedom Boat Club takes care of it all, maintenance, cleaning, repair, insurance, and storage.
If you are craving speed, jet skis are the ultimate rush. These nimble machines let you zip across the lake, carve tight turns, and catch air off waves. There are numerous marinas that offer jet ski rentals around Lake Texoma and other surrounding lakes.
Truthfully, as great as Texas is, it’s hot in the summer. Many people enjoy their outdoor activities in a nearby state. Colorado, for example, has cooler temperatures, but it is also a fabulous place to visit in their “off season”. It’s a premier destination for whitewater rafting with rapids that range from Class 1 to 5. The state has over five rivers known
for their white water rafting along the most beautiful mountains and terrains. Those rivers are also ideal and popular spots for fly fishing.
Fly fishing uses a lightweight lure (not actually a fly) to catch mostly trout. It is made of feathers, fur, or other materials to mimic insects. Unlike traditional fishing, fly fishing relies on the weight of the line to cast the fly. It requires special equipment and skills, which makes it more of a sport than a hobby. The number one place to fly fish in the United States is the Madison River in Montana near Yellowstone National Park, but other popular places to fly fish are Alaska and, as mentioned, Colorado.
Finally, if you are headed near an ocean this summer, consider scuba diving or snorkeling. The Florida Keys off

southern Florida is known as the “Diving Capital of the World” due to the vibrant coral reefs, warm waters, and plentiful marine life. The Keys are popular diving and snorkeling spots in part because of the clear and shallow water, allowing divers and snorkelers to experience the magnificent beauty.
Key Largo is the first key when driving south from Miami and is home to numerous dive shops. Some of the most popular sites for snorkeling and diving are Molasses Reef and the infamous Christ of the Abyss. The Christ of
the Abyss is a 9-foot bronze statue of Jesus Christ placed underwater that is visible to snorkelers and divers. The statue hosts myriad colorful fish and coral. Besides diving, the Florida Keys are also known for the incredible deep-sea fishing for Yellow Tail Snapper, Mahi Mahi, and Blackfin Tuna.
Whether it's boating, jet skiing, fly fishing -- any kind of fishing, white water rafting, or just hanging out by the pool, it’s time to experience the open air. These activities aren’t just about fun—they are about connection to nature, to friends, to yourself. Summer’s heat demands you get outside, feel the spray of lake water, catch a few fish, encounter nature, but mostly, let loose. So, grab your shades, rally the crew, and hit the great outdoors. It’s waiting for you.

DIVE IN THIS SUMMER
As North Texas prepares a warm welcome for summer this month, the excitement for longer days and time spent outdoors sets in. While many are just now turning their attention to their patios and lawns, Heather and Jason Weisz of Weisz Selection have already been busy, pouring their energy into turning ordinary backyards into showstopping personal retreats.
For the Weisz family, backyard living isn’t just about pools or patios—it’s about creating
That one-of-a-kind approach didn’t happen overnight. The Weisz story is a classic example of growth through grit and experience. Jason’s career began back in the 1980s, pushing a lawnmower through Texas yards. Over time, he expanded into landscaping and eventually discovered his passion for designing more comprehensive outdoor spaces.
This hands-on experience, built over decades, became the foundation of a com-
“I THINK THE UNIQUENESS [SETS US APART]…THERE’S NOT ONE OF OUR PROJECTS THAT’S THE SAME AS ANOTHER…WE’RE KIND OF IN A VERY CUSTOM NICHE,” HEATHER SAID.
full environments that feel like an extension of the home. Their vision has always been rooted in quality and individuality, offering something far beyond the standard swimming pool installation. Jason explained that the business was born from a desire to raise the bar in outdoor design.
“We started out trying to build the best pool that people could buy in the industry,” he said.
From the beginning, their focus was on excellence in craftsmanship and on delivering something truly unique in a market filled with repetition. Jason explained that the business was born from a desire to raise the bar in outdoor design.
“I think the uniqueness [sets us apart]… there's not one of our projects that’s the same as another…We're kind of in a very custom niche,” Heather said.
pany that today delivers full-scale outdoor living concepts. Weisz Selection not only designs these spaces, but it also brings them to life.
“I think that's one of the things that sets us apart, too, is that we're a one-stop shop…We do everything,” Heather said. “We look at the backyard and develop an overall concept and master plan, and we can complete all of it.”
Unlike many companies that outsource various aspects of a project, Weisz Selection handles everything in-house—from design to execution.
“Jason has an uncanny ability to walk into a backyard and listen to the customer's wants and incorporate all of the aspects or elements that the customer wants…creating it in a useful, beautiful [way],” Heather said.
Today’s homeowners are dreaming bigger than ever. Pools are just the beginning.

More clients are seeking complete outdoor living spaces, including kitchens, covered living areas, fire pits, and custom structures. Jason and Heather have fully embraced this shift through creativity and collaboration.
Jason leads the charge on the design side, while Heather keeps things running behind the scenes. Together, they’ve built a culture centered on collaboration and trust—and they’re quick to point out that their success is deeply tied to their team.
“We have an amazing team, so it's not just Jason and me,” Heather said. “We could not do it without our team.”
Clean, modern styles are in, with black-andwhite color schemes becoming a popular choice among clients. Multi-functional spaces are also in demand, with more homeowners asking for features like mother-in-law suites and dual-purpose structures for entertaining and everyday living.
“We like the uniqueness, the stuff that's different… that you don't see every day…that stands out and says, ‘Wow, that's stunning!'" Heather said.
One particularly popular feature right now is the “spool”—a hybrid spa and small heated pool that offers the best of both worlds. In areas where space is at a premium, spools provide the opportunity for both relaxation and exercise without the footprint of a full-sized pool. These compact solutions are a favorite among North Texas homeowners with smaller yards.
No matter the size or scope of the project, the Weisz team prides itself on attention to detail and unwavering transparency.
“[A] huge thing [is that] we don't go back to our homeowners with change orders unless they are really changing something,” Jason said. "We don't say, ‘Hey, we forgot to put this in there; forgot to put that in there.' ”
For Heather and Jason, what they do goes far beyond design or construction. It’s about crafting experiences—creating personal havens where memories can be made. With each project, they are reminded of why they started this journey in the first place.
“We get to do fun, unique things every day; no two projects are the same,” Heather said. “We're just grateful that we get to do what we do, and we have the team that we have.”
Weisz Selection’s office is located at 587 Marilee Road in Gunter, or online at weiszselection.com.

CIGAR LOUNGES
UNWIND WITH A PREMIUM CIGAR AND A FINELY PAIRED DRINK

In an era dominated by wellness trends, fitness tracking, and non-alcoholic spirits, the resurgence of cigar bars may seem like a surprising cultural twist. Yet cigar bars are experiencing a notable renaissance across urban centers and upscale communities. Once the haunt of old-school gentlemen and smoky backroom deals, these lounges are reimagined as stylish social spaces where aficionados and newcomers alike can unwind with a premium cigar and a finely paired drink. This evolving trend is more than just nostalgia - it’s a deliberate return to a slower, more tactile kind of luxury.
The concept of the cigar bar isn’t new. In the mid20th century, smoking lounges were fixtures in highend hotels, private clubs, and elite establishments. Cigar smoking, especially in Western cultures, was associated with celebration, power, and prestige. However, as public health awareness increased and anti-smoking legislation tightened, cigar bars saw a sharp decline in the 1990s and early 2000s. Smoking bans in restaurants and bars across the U.S., Canada, and much of Europe forced many of these lounges to shut their doors or pivot.
Yet, cigar smoking never entirely disappeared - it simply went underground. Private clubs, cigar societies, and home humidors preserved the tradition. What we’re seeing now is a return to form, but with a contemporary twist. Today’s cigar bars come in many flavors. Some maintain the traditional gentleman’s club aesthetic, with dark woods, leather upholstery, and classic decor. Others lean modern, blending sleek minimalism with tech-friendly touches like air purification systems and app-based membership management.
Drinks are a central part of the experience. Most cigar bars boast well-stocked bars featuring single malt scotches, small-batch bourbons, cognacs, and fortified wines—drinks that complement the cigar-smoking experience. In fact, pairing menus are increasingly common, with staff trained to recommend cigar and spirit combinations that bring out the best in both.
Many lounges also include retail sections, allowing patrons to purchase cigars to go, or to sample a stick before buying a box. Staff are often trained tobacconists, capable of guiding both novices and seasoned smokers through the selection process.
But modern consumers crave more than products - they seek immersive experiences. A cigar bar offers a curated atmosphere: leather chairs, dim lighting, jazz or blues humming in the background, and the smell of aged tobacco. For many, this is a welcome retreat from digital noise.
“The lounge is a cool place that feels private. There is no blaring music to drown out conversation. You can have upscale light bites and top-notch cocktails to complement your cigar, of course, but the star of the show is the company.”
“It’s the best way to relax. Mondays call for sophisticated cigars and a perfectly crafted Smoked Old Fashioned,” says Ashlyn Fajerson of Black Sheep Lounge on Main Street in Denison. The inviting atmosphere and staff create a comfortable environment for those new to cigars. “Nick is the cigar aficionado and Old Fashioned expert, but I’m trying to catch up as fast as I can,” continues Ashlyn. “There are many misconceptions about cigar bars. We don’t allow cigarettes, marijuana products, or vapes in the lounge - only quality cigars. And while we are motorcycle enthusiasts personally, the lounge is not a ‘biker bar.’ The vibe is comfortable and modern but upscale.”
Like fine wine, craft whiskey, or specialty coffee, cigars are being appreciated for their artistry. From Nicaraguan puros to Cuban classics, cigar culture is steeped in knowledge and nuance. Cigar bars often provide education, tastings, and cigar-rolling events, turning patrons into enthusiasts. Ash & Barrel, located on the square in downtown Sherman, raises the bar, pun intended. Owner Michael Smith notes, “We provide the finest cigars and liquor in Grayson County.” The sense of community and culture that emanates from connoisseurship draws people into these lounges. “Going on two years now, we provide a comfortable atmosphere where factory workers, doctors, and lawyers can come together and have something in common - a love of fine spirits and cigars.”
In a world where luxury is being redefined, cigars remain an enduring symbol of indulgence. Many high-end cigar bars now offer premium selections—rare vintages, limited editions, and personal lockers—appealing to a clientele that values exclusivity.
As the trend grows, innovation follows. Hybrid cigar bars and speakeasies, rooftop lounges with cigar-friendly patios, and even cigar barbershops and tailors are popping up.
The Silos in Celina has an elegant, speakeasy-style cigar lounge constructed inside a historic grain silo. Owner Michael Arani says, “When we were fleshing out the concept, I wanted something totally unique. Something that stood out as one-of-a-kind.”
Visitors to the Silos can experience for themselves the luxurious interior which is masculine and industrial yet modern and elegant. Reinforcing the cultural aspect of cigar lounges, Michael states, “The lounge is a cool place that feels private. There is no blaring music to drown out conversation. You can have upscale light bites and top-notch cocktails to complement your cigar, of course, but the star of the show is the company.”
There’s also a growing interest in inclusivity. Traditionally male-dominated, today’s cigar culture is increasingly welcoming to women and younger adults discovering the pleasures of the leaf. Brands and lounges are responding with more diverse marketing, events aimed at newcomers, and social media campaigns that blend tradition with trendiness.
The cigar bar trend may seem counterintuitive in a health-conscious world, but its appeal lies not in defiance but in distinction. These lounges offer something rare in modern life: time to slow down, savor, and connect. Whether you’re a seasoned smoker or just curious about the culture, stepping into a cigar bar is an invitation to experience a centuries-old ritual, updated for today’s discerning crowd.

RAY’S

Specializing In Texas Chic And Western-Inspired Clothing, Accessories, And Gifts

ARTICLE BY MIKE ZAPATA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JARED BOND
The Texoma area is blessed with unique boutiques and other retail stores. Inside the Katy Depot in Denison, you can find a one-of-akind shopping experience, Ray’s Mercantile, owned by Texoma entrepreneur, Lucas Ridley.
Lucas tells us, “Ray was my grandfather's name and my middle name. It was a way to honor my grandfather when naming the store. I wanted a name that captured a little bit of nostalgia and reflected the variety of goods we offer. I knew I didn’t want it to be just a clothing store, and didn’t want to limit myself on what we could carry. Mercantile has that old-school charm that feels true to our roots, especially in a historic train depot. It’s a nod to the past with a modern twist. Our lifestyle heritage store specializes in Texas-chic and Western-inspired clothing, accessories, and gifts. You’ll find everything from graphic tees and statement jewelry to seasonal apparel, candles, and home décor. Truly timeless pieces that showcase American heritage. Ray’s Mercantile isn’t just a boutique—it’s a lifestyle. I love creating and designing a space that offers something for everyone. I also believe being stylish should be affordable. Plus, the setting in the Katy Depot makes it one-of-a-kind."

Although boutiques are plentiful in Texoma, finding a shop that offers extensive men’s clothing can be challenging. Ray’s Mercantile offers a great selection of menswear and accessories with brands like Sendero, Burlebo, Howler Brothers, and Seager. “Men’s clothing is unique. We try to have something different for everyone, but we want to provide a comfortable and fun place for men to shop. We also carry sizes up to 3X.”
Many small businesses face challenges, but Lucas is finding success. He has a degree in marketing and an exceptional understanding of social media. “The biggest challenge has been learning to wear all the hats. From marketing and merchandising to inventory and event planning, balancing creativity with the business side is a constant juggle, but it’s worth it. And like many small businesses, navigating changing trends and keeping up with social media can be a full-time job in itself."
Lucas is proud that Ray's offers a unique experience. “You can expect a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere where there’s always something new to see. Whether you’re just browsing or shopping

“You can expect a laidback, welcoming atmosphere where there’s always something new to see. Whether you’re just browsing or shopping for something specific, we want everyone to feel like a friend. Customers love knowing they’ll see something fresh every time they walk through the doors or scroll your feed. Every item at Ray’s is handpicked to reflect a certain lifestyle. One that’s bold, playful, Western-inspired, and full of personality. It’s not mass-produced or overly trendy—it’s authentic, wearable, and fun. That intentional curation sets it apart. In addition to a great shopping experience, Lucas strives to be a great community partner and neighbor. Lucas is on the Denison Main Street Board and is the event coordinator for the Katy Depot. LETTER TO MY Younger Self
Writing a letter to your younger self is a great exercise in reflection and self-compassion. It can be a way to offer advice, share memories, or simply express kindness. For our Gentlemen’s issue, we asked two successful local men in business to share wisdom with their younger selves.
Dear Younger Me,
I know you’re fired up. You’ve got a vision, a plan, and enough drive to chase down every goal you set. That determination will take you far—but I need you to hear this: slow down. Be present. Life isn’t just about the wins; it’s about how you get there. In a few years, you’ll open the doors to your own law firm. Two months later, you’ll hand over the reins and roll into an operating room for a kidney transplant. Yeah—you read that right. With two toddlers at home and a brand-new business, you’ll have to face one of the scariest moments of your life. And in that storm, you’ll learn what really matters.
You’ll learn that asking for help doesn’t make you weak—it makes you human. That trust is more than a business strategy; it’s letting go when you have no other choice. That God’s peace shows up in the most unexpected ways, even when you’re terrified.
You’ll see your best friend step up and give you the gift of life. You’ll see your wife show up for you in ways that redefine love. And you’ll understand—deeply —that every hug from your kids, every quiet moment with family, every day you get to live and lead is a blessing, not a guarantee. So keep working hard. Keep building. But don’t rush. Don’t miss the beauty in the small things. This journey is the point, not just the destination.
Love, Older Me
SCOTT Snellings

SEAN Terry
VICE PRESIDENT
CENTURION AMERICAN DEVELOPMENT GROUP

Dear Younger Me, Take a deep breath, kid. You’ve got a wild, meaningful, and purpose-driven road ahead— and I promise you, it’s all going to be worth it.
Right now, you might not fully understand the weight of leadership or the impact of service. But that fire inside you? That pull toward something greater than yourself? Don’t ignore it. One day, it will guide you through firehouses, city hall, and community halls where your voice will shape the future of the place you call home.
At Texas A&M, you’ll learn about grit, discipline, and the importance of leading from the front. But it’s the lessons outside the football field that will shape the man you become. Remember to listen more than you speak, and when you do speak, let it come from a place of honesty, humility, and heart.
You’ll wear many hats: firefighter, husband, father, mayor, friend. Each role will stretch you, challenge you, and change you for the better. You’ll be trusted with the hopes of a community, and you’ll learn that legacy isn’t built in the spotlight—it’s built in service, in small moments, in the quiet choices to do what’s right, not what’s easy.
You won’t always get it perfect. That’s okay. Stay grounded in your values and rooted in your faith. Surround yourself with people who push you to be better, and never forget the power of showing up for your neighbors.
There will come a day when people look to you not just for decisions, but for vision. You’ll help shape what North Texas becomes for generations. Never take that responsibility lightly.
Keep showing up. Keep serving. Keep believing that small-town roots can grow big dreams.
With pride, Future Sean
