For the Ladies
I don’t know about you but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. Our mothers and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.

And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to Texoma's women.
They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.
As always, thank you for reading and we'll see you around town!

A PATH TO Better Health
“I want to be there for them and for the future… I want to be able to run around with my (future) grandchildren and just be comfortable in my skin.”

Jill Smisek is a successful real estate agent who has become known for supporting local. She often gives of herself and her time to local schools, charities and fellow business owners. In our interview with Jill, she shares her path to not only caring for her community but also caring for herself.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY AND THE LEAD UP TO YOUR PROCEDURE?
My journey, like many others, has had MANY ups and downs over the years. It all began after my first baby was born… and then my second came just 13 months later.
Deep in the throes of motherhood, I was constantly taking care of everyone else but me. I tried every program and “diet” under the sun and even sought out therapy. I was constantly looking for a magic bullet to make the weight disappear. Although I did not have any of the “typical” food issues, I really wanted to get to the bottom of “why” I was doing this because nothing was working.
Over the years, I had thought about surgery a few different times, but always told myself that I just needed to “eat less and move more”. While that does help, when your body has been in such

an unhealthy place for so long, that method doesn’t always get the job done. Finally, I had ENOUGH. I had a few other people in my life who had the procedure and told me how life changing it was. I did some research and made an appointment with the doctor. Once I fully understood what it entailed, I went forward with the decision to take charge of my life. It was the absolute BEST thing I have done for myself, and my family. I include my family in this because they are a big part of my “why”. I want to be there for them and for the future… I want to be able to run around with my (future) grandchildren and just be comfortable in my skin.
“Never lose sight of the fact that if you don’t make significant changes in the way you are living your life, you won’t see the results.”
SPECIFICALLY, WHAT PROCEDURE DID YOU RECEIVE AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THAT ONE?
The official medical term is “vertical sleeve gastrectomy” or VSG. It is a procedure where approximately 75-85% of your stomach is removed, leaving you a “sleeve” of a stomach. There are many different types of procedures that can be done, but this best met my needs.
DID YOU HAVE SPECIFIC GOALS IN MIND WHEN CHOOSING THIS PATH?
My ultimate goal when I made this choice was to change my life for the better. I wanted to be healthy on the inside… but I am vain enough to admit I also wanted to look a certain way on the outside. By having this procedure, I have been able to achieve both. I am still shocked at how much better I feel and how much easier it is to not only do the day-to-day things, but also to move my body in ways I was never able to before.
HOW EFFECTIVE WAS IT IN HELPING YOU REALIZE THOSE GOALS?
This procedure has been the tool that I have needed all these years. The surgery isn’t a magic fix or an easy button. There is a lot more that goes into it than you think, but by having a smaller stomach, it has allowed me to learn how to better listen to my body.
WHAT DO YOU THINK PEOPLE CONSIDERING THE PROCEDURE SHOULD KNOW?
I suggest that anyone thinking of doing this, make sure you are ready to face all the mental challenges that come with it. Although I can’t eat as much as before, I have been shocked at how much of this process has been mental. As I have heard many different mindset coaches and dietitians say on their podcasts, “The surgery is on your stomach, not your mind”.
As I am nearing the end of the “honeymoon” phase, it is more and more important to constantly be checking in with myself
to make sure I am working through all the mental aspects of this journey. I would begin by reading mindset books, researching the ways to be successful after surgery, listening to podcasts, and just fully immersing yourself in the lifestyle that you want. Much of my inspiration and guidance has come from friends or the people I follow online. I have found an amazing community of people online that are so willing to share their struggles and triumphs along their journey.
Never lose sight of the fact that if you don’t make significant changes in the way you are living your life, you won’t see the results. Those lifestyle changes have been easier for me to make because of my tool. Working out in ways I’ve never been able to before, pushing my body to do things I never pictured myself doing, and becoming the person I’ve always wanted to be has been the greatest part of my journey.
ARE THERE THINGS YOU WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY?
My biggest regret is not doing it sooner. That said, I don’t know if I was mentally ready sooner. I wish I hadn’t spent so many years judging myself and constantly talking myself out of doing this. In my mind, I was telling myself that I was just lazy and needed to work harder. We are all worthy of having the life we desire.
WHAT'S NEXT IN YOUR JOURNEY?
The next step in my journey is maintenance, which to be honest, is scary. I have spent 20+ years trying to lose weight, so I honestly don’t have the slightest clue how to maintain. I have been researching to find the best bariatric-specific dietician for me, to help guide through this next phase. I want to ensure that my old ways don’t creep back, so the mindset work will also never stop.

Ladies of TEXOMA

An unassuming sign -- that’s all it took for women to find friendships and support.
One morning Karla Davis observed frazzled moms at school drop off across the street. Karla remembered that time with young children and felt compelled to help. The next morning, she put a sign on her door inviting moms for coffee. To her surprise, they showed up – and did so for the next five years.
In 2018, Karla moved from Celina to Sherman. While her real estate business prospered, she missed the camaraderie of women. She created the “Ladies of Texoma” Facebook page to meet new
people and provide a positive space for local women to share events, to introduce themselves, and to bond. The membership has tripled since then with now over two thousand members.
Once again, she knew coffee could bring people together, so Karla used the platform to establish the “No Agenda Coffee” club which meets every Thursday from 8:00am -10:00am at White Rabbit Coffee House in Sherman (100 S. Crockett St). The motto, “Come when you can and leave when you need to," allows for a stress-free way to unite with other local women.
The mission is for women to encourage and be encouraged, support and be supported. Karla says, “We all need to experience this, but also to GIVE support and

encouragement.” Like the name suggests, there is no agenda, except to empower others. There’s no networking, nothing sold, just fellowship.
Resulting in a phenomenal vibe according to Karla, “It’s unexplainable. You walk in and feel accepted. It was unplanned, just happened.” Each week the group has grown including spin-off events like gardening classes, crafts, and supper clubs.
Both the groups uplift women. Karla doesn’t take credit for the popularity but believes “it’s a God thing.” All starting with a simple sign to reach out and empower one another.

HANDMADE
BREAKING BREAD

Making homemade bread is coming back, and while the convenience of buying a pre-made loaf is readily available, there is nothing like the taste of a warm, homemade loaf right out of the oven. This easy-to-follow recipe is exploding with flavor and is simple to make.
FOCACCIA
This recipe is quick and easy to make with just a few simple steps. It tastes great on its own, but dipping it in olive oil infused with fresh herbs adds an extra level of flavor.
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 ¾ cups warm water
• 2 ½ teaspoons sugar
• 1 package active dry yeast
• 4 cups flour
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 4 tablespoons olive oil
• Optional:
• Fresh rosemary
• Coarse sea salt
• Fresh pressed garlic
INSTRUCTIONS:
Use a stand mixer with a fitted dough hook, and stir together the water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and stir again. Set mixture aside for 5 minutes. Mixture should be foamy. Next, add the flour and salt and mix on low until a shaggy dough forms. Increase speed and mix for an additional 4-5 minutes. Brush a large bowl with olive oil. Transfer the dough to the bowl and cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a damp towel. Set aside for about 1 to 1 ½ hours until the dough has doubled in size.
Brush a 9x13-inch baking dish with 2 tablespoons of oil. Uncover the dough and rub hands with olive oil. Slide your hands under the dough and fold it onto itself. Continue to work your way around the edge of the bowl, folding the dough onto itself until there is a ball that you can lift from the bowl. Place the dough in the prepared pan and press the dough to the edges. Cover the pan with plastic wrap or a damp towel and set aside to rise for about 45 minutes until the dough has doubled in size.
Preheat the oven to 425°F. Drizzle the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the dough. Rub your hands with olive oil and use your fingers to make indentions on the surface of the dough. Sprinkle it with salt and rosemary and any desired toppings. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.

FOUR DECADES OF CREATIVE OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Daystar Landscapes Celebrates 40 Years
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCY THORNTON

The roots of our business have always been our people.
Beautiful outdoor transformations: Since 1984, Daystar Landscapes, Inc., professionals have provided landscape design and installations throughout North Texas. The Prosper-headquartered team specializes in landscape design and installation services for new homes, multifamily developments, residential renovation, commercial landscape design and commercial grounds maintenance services.
"Actually, our family of landscapers look at it as being able to create memorable outdoor experiences for customers," says Jeff Canfield, founder/owner of Daystar Landscapes, Inc.
While proudly observing the company's 40th anniversary during 2024, Jeff reflects on its humble beginning.
He says, “When I first moved to Texas from Oklahoma in March 1984, I looked at what opportunities were available for business ventures. After researching the requirements and affordability of getting started, I decided to start a landscaping company. In the early days, I worked nights stocking groceries at Brookshires and found landscaping jobs during the day."
"I started Daystar Landscapes by renting a wheelbarrow and purchasing tools on a Sears credit card," he recalls.
Now, the company has 90 employees and supports the community through sponsorships, special projects and nonprofit volunteerism.
Catherine Brooks, Daystar's general manager, says a fundamental part of the company's inspiring culture is about how they make positive differences in the community, often through landscaping. In fact, she details how the company's team has assisted a variety of community nonprofits:
• Daystar is a sponsor of the Champions For Veterans initiative and Freedom program with ManeGait, a group operating a therapeutic riding center in McKinney, serving individuals with disabilities.
• Daystar is a long-term title sponsor of the Thin Blue Line Ball, an appreciation event to give back to local, selfless law enforcement families on April 6.
• Additionally, Daystar is a sponsor for the Prosper Police Department, as well as a sponsor for the Celina Police Department and that department's Drug Educational Program for school-aged children.
• Remaining actively involved in the Prosper, Frisco, McKinney and Celina chambers of commerce groups is another way Daystar supports community growth and overall progress.
• As a gold sponsor of the Community Garden Kitchen based in McKinney, Daystar helps provide food to those facing hunger and food insecurity throughout Collin County.
• Daystar gifts landscaping and other charitable contributions, along with volunteering with organizations that are so important to the local community and residents. These amazing organizations have made it their mission to “step in” where there is a loss or lack of services. Some of these organizations are The Community Garden Kitchen, Hugs Café and Greenhouse, Agape Resources, Homes for Veterans and McKinney’s Learning Garden.
• Daystar provides landscaping and some charitable contributions for Jericho Village Housing, an innovative approach to aiding people with transitional housing, support services, sustainable income stream development and other resources.
• Helping with McKinney's Learning Garden at the northwest corner of the Tupps Brewery site in east McKinney was a natural fit for Daystar. The garden features about 30 raised garden beds as well as picnic tables, potting benches and a harvest wash area. The new space also was designed to serve as an outdoor classroom for children through seniors. The garden is facilitated and maintained by volunteers, and classes led by local chefs, farmers and gardeners. Food produced at the garden will be distributed to Community Garden Kitchen, La Tiendita, Hugs Café and East McKinney Farmers Market.
• Michael E. Thornton Foundation provides financial assistance for both active and non-active duty military and families in need, and Daystar proudly supports this charitable group.

“ Most importantly, our company is rooted in the biblical principle that in addition to using our God-given talents in our jobs, we need to use the things we do well to bless those around us.
• Daystar contributes to and supports the Collin County Master Gardeners Association in the hopes of sharing and growing the education of the “next generation” in their school programs throughout Collin County.
Notably, Daystar is one of the 2024 sponsors of The Garden Show slated for March 17-17, as presented by the Collin County Master Gardeners Association. The event will be held in the Show Barn at Myers Park & Event Center in McKinney.
As North Texas continues to grow, Catherine indicates so does the demand for top-notch, reputable landscape design and installation services. "Daystar is committed to quality work and superior customer

service in all aspects of our business. Our organization is a family of co-workers. We strive to accomplish the most experienced high-level service and landscape creation for our customers. This is the quality that our builders, homeowners, general contractors and maintenance clients have come to trust and depend on," she says.
"Most importantly, our company is rooted in the biblical principle that in addition to using our God-given talents in our jobs, we need to use the things we do well to bless those around us," she adds.
