Welcome Home

Home. So much contained in that little four letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable.

Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” As we thought about home - we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That of course includes the food and drinks, the aesthetic and design, but most importantly - the people.

We feel like the lucky ones as we got to learn more about the businesses and individuals that comprise the Texoma area and hope the small lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together.

As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you - in your city, neighborhood and most of all - your home.

Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.

As always, thank you for reading and we'll see you around town!

Happy March!

Read Across America Day

NATIONAL MARCH INTO LITERACY MONTH
LOCALS ONLY | EDUCATION 12

What better day to celebrate Read Across America Day than on March 2nd, the birthday of the beloved Dr. Seuss? It's the perfect kickoff to March's National March Into Literacy Month, both of which are dedicated to the promotion of reading and literacy.

Read Across America Day was first introduced by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998. The NEA's goal for the celebration is to motivate kids to become lifelong readers, thereby improving student performance. Every year, schools, public libraries, and other organizations celebrate this day by holding reading events for kids.

WAYS PARENTS CAN PROMOTE READING

There are many ways parents can promote a love of reading and encourage their kids to read not only during this celebration but year-round.

Read to kids. Begin reading to your child very early. The NEA suggests infancy is a good time to start. As your child grows, encourage your child's participation in reading the story with or to you. Although your child may not be ready to read, kids often have some of their favorite books or pages memorized. By making your child an active participant, it will help develop their love for reading.

Visit the library.  Think of the library as a big free educational toy store. Help your child choose some books but also encourage your child to look through shelves and select some on their own. Your child can also take home audiobooks, video games, videos, and music CDs.

Help your child build a collection.  One thing common among reading lovers is how much they enjoy having their own book collection. Help your child build a personal library of your child's favorite series,

author, or genre. Then give your child a special shelf to store and display the collection.

Play word games. Look for board, computer, or phone games that help kids develop their reading and spelling skills and vocabulary.

Sign up for Goodreads. Through this Android and iOS app, kids can track both the books they've read and those they want to read. They can also check out what their friends are reading.

Subscribe your child to a magazine. There's a host of kids' magazines on the market and something for every age group. It will give your child something to look forward to each month and build enthusiasm for reading.

Read in front of your kids. Show kids that reading isn't just a school requirement, but rather a lifelong activity. Let them see you reading both to learn and for pleasure.

Form a kids book club. If your child is interested in it, this is a great way to build excitement for reading. You'll want to find kids who are all about the same reading level. You'll need to decide where to hold the weekly or monthly meetings, which could be at your house, or perhaps your school or public library will provide you space. You might be able to advertise it through your child's school or public library as well.

Set up a reading room or corner. Find a quiet distraction-free area in your home to designate as the reading area. It should have comfy seating, perhaps even a bean bag or two, pillows, blankets, and good lighting.

Josh Downtain, co-owner of D2 Built, is a lifelong resident of the Texoma area. The business is family-owned where Josh works alongside his wife Madelyn, as well as his dad David and his wife, Tracey. The Downtains manage all aspects of the business from construction, design, bookkeeping, and project management.

The company strives to have the same relationship with their customers. D2 Built team CONTINUED > 17 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/TEXOMACITYLIFESTYLE MARCH 2024

In addition, the D2 Built employees are also considered family. The team strives to provide a path for long-term growth and achieve success. Moreover, between David, Josh, and D2 Built’s foremen and project superintendent, the team has over a combined forty years experience in the industry. Josh says, “We have seasoned veterans with a rich history in construction bringing years of knowledge to ensure the highest standards in home building.” This is also useful with the remodeling branch of the business, another service provided by D2 Built.

The experience and values are not just what sets D2 Built apart from others. It is the advanced cutting-edge technology. D2 Built is integrating “building science” into the entire construction process. They are leaders “exploring innovative framing techniques, insulation systems, and construction methodologies to stay ahead in the industry,” Josh notes. That means creating a holistic home using advanced frame wraps combined with modern HVAC systems to control air quality allowing only “good” air inside the home, ensuring a healthier household.

D2 Built is a leader in home design utilizing current trends with a tailored, timeless style. They create spaces aligning with customer’s wishes that are everlasting yet contemporary.

D2 Built has also become known for their projects in downtown Sherman. Josh says the goal there is to “honor the buildings’ history while introducing modern elements.” They are excited to preserve downtown Sherman.

The Downtain family have lived around Texoma most of their lives. Josh loves that Sherman still has a small community, country lifestyle but with big city benefits. He and his family enjoy spending time downtown and on the water at Lake Texoma.

Supporting the community they love, the company sponsors area festivals and Little League teams. It is the D2 Built way - always focusing on faith, family, friendship.

Home Beyond Walls: Lakeway Christian Community Resale Barn

STORE PROVIDES THE COMMUNITY A
HOPE AND BELONGING
A THRIFT
HAVEN OF
GIVING BACK | LOCAL SERVICES 20

In Grayson County, Texas, the Lakeway Christian Community Resale Barn stands as a beacon of hope and home. Under the insightful guidance of Kris Reeves and a dedicated board of directors, this unique thrift store transcends its basic function, offering a myriad of services that reinforce the sense of home and community.

The Resale Barn, established in 1996, began with a noble mission of neighbors helping neighbors. Its evolution into a sanctuary for those in need has been remarkable. Beyond the obvious financial assistance with rent, utilities, and prescriptions, the Barn’s contribution of over $6 million, and $480,000 last year alone, is a testament to its commitment to sustain the security and warmth of a home for those in crisis.

Central to its mission is the ‘Hope Through Grace’ program, which offers extended support to individuals battling health crises, particularly those undergoing chemotherapy or in hospice care, who do not have the financial stability or means to cover basic living expenses. This program ensures that their homes remain a place of solace and comfort during their most trying times, and most importantly that they feel the love and hope of the community.

The Resale Barn is more than a place for financial assistance; it’s a shopping destination where every item, from clothing to furniture, carries the potential to turn a house into a home. These items, each holding a story, are priced to maintain the balance between affordability for shoppers and funding the operations of the Barn. The pricing strategy is thoughtful, ensuring that essential goods are accessible while also generating necessary revenue for its community services. The recent expansion of the Resale Barn’s facility to 12,000

square feet is not just a physical growth; it symbolizes a deeper commitment to the community. This expansion allows for a broader range of merchandise, enhancing the Barn’s capacity to support more people. Celebrated with a grand re-opening event, it marked a new chapter in the Barn’s journey of community service.

Furthermore, the Resale Barn’s impact extends beyond Grayson County. In times of natural disasters, like Hurricane Katrina and the Moore, Oklahoma tornado, the Barn has been a pivotal force in rallying community support and providing aid. From collecting and delivering necessities like water and bath towels to financially assisting in funeral costs for victims, their reach in times of crisis is profound.

Operating solely on sales and donations, the Resale Barn is a model of self-sustainability. This financial model ensures that every penny spent or donated directly impacts those in need. And while they have a paid staff of about 23 individuals, Kris does not take a salary to ensure the mission is fulfilled every day.  The community’s trust in the Barn is reflected in their generous support, be it through donations or shopping at the store.

Lakeway Christian Community Resale Barn is more than a thrift store; it’s a cornerstone of the community. It represents a place of hope, support, and the essence of home. Through its multifaceted programs and compassionate approach, the Barn continues to weave a tapestry of belonging, ensuring that everyone in Grayson County and beyond has a place to call home.

Make A Weisz Selection

LOCAL OUTDOOR LIVING SPECIALIST COMPANY HELPS YOU BUILD YOUR BACKYARD OASIS

Ever since Jason Weisz was very young, being an outdoorsman has run through his veins. At the age of 6, he began mowing lawns for his family and this love for the outdoors gradually grew into Weisz Selection: the award-winning, all-inclusive landscaping, hardscaping, poolscaping and outdoor living company located in Gunter, Texas.

When he was 16, Jason incorporated his company and he began building patios and arbors for his friends. Back then, his clientele grew rapidly by word of mouth and soon he developed a skilled team that helped him grow the company into what it is today.

OUTDOOR LIVING | HOME + DESIGN 24

Although Weisz Selection has seen its fair share of difficulties, the team never backs down from a challenge using the hardships as stepping stones for growth. The company had just opened a second location in Houston during the recession of 2008, and the crash forced them to throttle things back just to survive. At that time, many companies were installing landscaping or building pools, but very few were doing them both. That is when Jason first decided to add a custom pool building division to his landscape and hardscape company. Because of that decision and years of hard work to develop this niche, Weisz Selection is now

one of North Texas’ most trusted outdoor living companies. Even COVID could not stop them – the company actually saw an increase in clients during the pandemic –if families were going to be stuck at home they might as well turn their backyards into their own paradise.

Weisz Selection does it all so when you are planning your dream backyard oasis there is no need to hunt around to piece together several different companies to collaborate. From designing and installing unique state-of-the-art outdoor amenities to maintaining your backyard wonderland, there is nothing Weisz Selection cannot do.

CONTINUED > 25 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/TEXOMACITYLIFESTYLE MARCH 2024

The Weisz Selection team prides itself on being unique – Jason said that no two pool projects are alike when they design pools and outdoor living spaces. They are always looking for new and innovative ways to create something that has never been seen before, and they refuse to settle for the ordinary. Jason and his wife, Heather, collaborate with their team to build creative and beautiful outdoor retreats that are sure to have that WOW factor.

Above all, Jason and Heather want you to feel like family. They put their clients first in everything they do,

going above and beyond to satisfy each client’s individual needs. They love servicing such a rapidly growing area as it affords them the ability to stay close to home, work on the ranch, and raise their children.

So when it comes to your new outdoor getaway, Jason, Heather and their team can assure you make the “Weisz Selection” when you are ready to change your property from ordinary to extraordinary!

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET

8 WAYS TO ORGANIZE AND INJECT STYLE INTO YOUR SPACE

Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet.

How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying these guidelines will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

01

FACE CLOTHES THE SAME DIRECTION

It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.

HOME UPDATE | HOME + DESIGN 28

02 03

USE REAL ESTATE WISELY

Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. A large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

04

HIDDEN STORAGE

Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-toceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for out-of-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.

NEGATIVE SPACE

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

05

ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

CONTINUED > 29 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/TEXOMACITYLIFESTYLE MARCH 2024

06

UPGRADED HANGERS

The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner!

07

BAG & SHOE STORAGE

Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions.

Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily.

08

MAKE A STATEMENT

Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.
