Ok, I'll be honest—it hasn't even been just a minute since my last workout. It's been, well, probably at least 16 years (prenatal yoga, anyone?!). Life got in the way. Running after kids (that's exercise, right?), doing errands, work ... you know how it goes. Growing up, I loved to move. If I wasn't curled up with a book, I was riding my bike around the block, playing Capture the Flag with neighbors, or at dance class. Ballet, tap, jazz—it didn't matter. I loved to dance. I was on my college's kickline team and even took dance classes after I was married. As we worked on this Health & Wellness issue, it reminded me how much I miss all of that. (And my kids are finally getting older—the oldest left for college and the youngest just started driving. Free time for me!) That all brings me to—welcome to 2024, the time to remember what we want to accomplish in the days ahead and intentionally make an effort to do so. A new year equals a reminder to restart, refresh, and reset our course (if we want to, of course). In this issue, we aim to help you start the year with several health and wellness topics. Meet an eye care practice making its mark in Tempe, learn about a local healthy restaurant that has options for all kinds of dietary needs, be introduced to a local organization that's helping make our community a better place, meet a doctor to know, and more. The Ohio native moved to Arizona when he was in high school, later graduating from Arizona State University and then pursuing his optometry degree at Pacific University College of Optometry. He later returned to Tempe and was practicing here for a few years when an opportunity presented itself. “An opportunity arose for me to purchase an existing practice in the heart of Tempe,” he says. “I jumped at the chance. I was able to practice my profession on my own terms.” That was 35 years ago, and since then, Tempe Eyecare Associates has become part of the fabric of Tempe, offering the appeal of a small-town clinic with longterm familiar staff faces; top-notch medical equipment; and a service-oriented, caring mindset.

Some conditions treated include cataracts, glaucoma, dry eye disease, diabetic retinopathy, keratoconus, and macular degeneration.

A GROWING PRACTICE

In the years since its launch, Tempe Eyecare Associates has grown to also include Dr. Blaine Watkins, who grew up in Canada and then attended the Illinois College of Optometry, and Dr. George Paul, who grew up in New York and then completed his doctorate of optometry at the InterAmerican University in Puerto Rico. All three doctors are dedicated to providing the best care possible and strive to go above and beyond to ensure patient satisfaction and make exams easy and comfortable. “Eye exams should never be scary, and it’s important to me that our CONTINUED >

patients feel comfortable coming to our clinic,” says Dr. Paul. “When you schedule an eye exam, you get to see friendly doctors, we have you go through a few pre-tests, and then we have you read out a few lines to us. As soon as you know it, you’re all done! “Just like general healthcare, it’s important to know what’s going on with your eyes,” he continues. “Are you missing out on anything, whether it be your distance or reading? Can your vision do more for you than it currently does? In the end, we hope you always leave our clinic seeing the world through a clearer lens.”

THE WINDOW TO YOUR HEALTH

“Changes to your vision can, and often do, occur very slowly over time,” says Dr. Watkins. “It can be difficult for some to recognize the deterioration of best-corrected vision without being shown what a return to normal vision would look like. Certain areas of the eye are very sensitive to pain, while other areas of the eye are not. The need for eye care is obvious when you have an abrasion on the cornea because it’s very painful, but a large hemorrhage in the retina could often go amiss because it often isn’t painful. Routine care can lead to early detection and treatment of both ocular and systemic conditions.” In fact, beyond just vision changes, the eyes can show a variety of system illnesses, from diabetes to hypertension, as well as several autoimmune conditions.

Picazzo’s Healthy Italian Kitchen is an Arizonabased, family-owned and -operated restaurant with locations in Tempe, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Arrowhead, and Gilbert. The restaurant was created with a commitment to meet all guests’ dietary needs, from typical dishes to extensive vegan options, gluten-free options, and more, and sources the cleanest, healthiest ingredients available. We sat down with Chris Disney, managing partner, to talk food, health, and the “healthy hour.”

WHY WAS THE RESTAURANT CREATED?

Picazzo's was first opened in 2002 in Sedona when the owners saw a need for a unique, upscale pizza restaurant experience in the market.

WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHERS?

Most people don’t associate “healthy” or gluten-free with Italian cuisine. However, at Picazzo’s, every item on the menu is gluten-free, with the exception of one pizza dough selection. We also cater to a wide variety of dietary needs and have a full vegan menu, while sourcing ingredients free of hormones, nitrates/nitrites, antibiotics, and pesticides. Our guests love that they can enjoy a meal out with family or friends, and everyone can get what they want—no matter what their dietary requirements are!

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MENU HIGHLIGHTS?

Our gluten-free pizza is a fan favorite. The elote pizza in particular is one of the most popular items. It must be something about that butter garlic sauce and spicy chipotle drizzle. Our lunch combo is a fun way to try a variety of our pizzas, salads, soups, and pasta dishes. And of course, our healthy hour is offered seven days a week and we offer half-price bottles of wine all day every Tuesday and Saturday. So many great options!

SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR DISHES?

We sell a lot of our puttanesca pizza, spicy Thai peanut chicken pasta, chicken parmesan, and our vegan meetballs. A few of our new dishes that are

already proving to be popular with guests are our whipped herb ricotta appetizer, served with toasted focaccia, and the adobo chicken, featuring Red Bird adobo marinated chicken thighs, an adobo butter baste, roasted jalapeño white bean purée, Fresno chiles, and micro greens.

DO YOU CHANGE YOUR MENU OFTEN?

We usually update our menu once or twice per year. Because we are so committed to sourcing the cleanest premium ingredients, we only launch new menu items once we’ve dialed in the right products that we know our guests will love. We put a lot of time and care into serving food that tastes great and meets our high standards. That said, we are excited to be launching several new items this month!

WHY DO YOU HAVE A “HEALTHY HOUR” RATHER THAN A “HAPPY HOUR”?

Just because it’s happy hour doesn’t mean it has to be fried! Our guests love indulging in healthy hour items that taste delicious, while keeping things clean. Some of our most popular “healthy hour” items include our baked wings and meatballs, and our gluten-free cheese bread … and of course, our creative selection of cocktails and mocktails.

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT THE TEMPE LOCATION THAN ANY OF YOUR OTHER LOCATIONS?

Our Tempe restaurant is one of the locations that has a separate bar area where regulars can gather and enjoy cocktails with friends on some occasions or enjoy a meal in the dining area on others.

giving BAC K Local organization Keep Tempe Beautiful is a volunteer-run nonprofit dedicated to improving the quality of life in Tempe and the beautification of the city. We caught up with Joe Forte from the organization to chat about it.

WHAT IS THE VISION OF KEEP TEMPE BEAUTIFUL? Keep Tempe Beautiful creates opportunities to positively impact the environment for people who live, work, and play in Tempe. We do this by educating and bringing the community together for events.

WHAT ARE THE ORGANIZATION’S GOALS? Our organization has many goals based around our five program areas. Our long-term goals are to have 30 cleanup activities a month, plant over 10,000 trees a year, manage five community gardens, produce a yearly zero-waste music festival, and have a sustainability and recycling education program in the Tempe Elementary School districts with multiple full-time employees fulfilling this program.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ORGANIZATION’S ACTIVITIES? We have five program areas. They are park, street, and alleyway cleanups; tree plantings; recycling events with the City of Tempe; community gardens (all currently active); and a sustainability and recycling education program in the Tempe Elementary School district (not yet active). At the boutique Aldrete Design Interiors, it’s all about life-inspired interior design. The Tempe interior design firm specializes in creating cohesive spaces, using textiles, well-thought-out furnishings, and curated decor. “We create timeless, inviting interiors that inspire a life well lived,” says Teresa Aldrete, owner/principal designer. Top with chia or flax seeds for an extra omega-3 boost, nuts or seeds for added protein, or sliced fruit for additional vitamins and fiber. Including a hint of turmeric or ginger can aid in digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables can aid in cellular repair and gut health, and smoothie bowls are a delicious way to incorporate more into your day. Try some of these simple recipes, or create your own combinations to give your health a boost.

INGREDIENTS: • 1 orange or 2 clementines • ½ cup carrots • 1 cup frozen mangos • 1 cup frozen peaches • ½ banana • ½ cup vanilla yogurt • ½ teaspoon turmeric, ground • small pinch of pepper Blend all ingredients until smooth. Top with desired toppings.
