Cheers to a Happy & Healthy New Year

January 2024 PUBLISHER

Michael Beightol | michael.beightol@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R

Stephen Neilson | stephen.neilson@citylifestyle.com

January is a month of contrasts. It's when we hit pause after the frenzy of the end of the year and holidays, as well as a time to reflect on blessings, hit reset and set goals for the New Year. In every issue of SW Lake, our goal is to share positive news that’s always helpful, useful and informative for each of the busy families in our area we are glad to count as our readers. This month our hope is to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. Certainly, inevitably, over time we experience changes and challenges: a health issue, birth of a baby or grandchild, change in employment, retirement, financial insecurity, loss of a loved one, or a rift in a relationship. When it comes to anything in life, it's not what you do some days that moves the needle, it's what you do MOST days. It's not the sometimes-choices we make, it's the most-of-the-time choices. In this issue, Sean Lee of Restoration Fitness offers a new way of setting health and wellness goals; if a vacation is something you crave, start planning now for a winter wellness getaway to a place like Scottsdale, AZ; begin your day fresh with a delicious smoothie bowl with any of the terrific choices we offer; and if it's time to find a new dentist or gym, take advantage of the debut of our new recurring feature, City List, designed to help you start your search. Remember that it's not what you do some days — it's what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling and fabulous 2024.

Celebrating a New, Much Larger Lake Zurich Florist Shop

Buona Beef Expands to Kildeer; Brings in Rainbow Cone, Too

North Point Kitchen + Bar Transforms "Kathy's" on Forest Lake

Anping Lovejoy (left in red) greets Kasia Vetter and Amanda Howland to her new, greatly enlarged Lake Zurich Florist shop. Located in an entirely new development on the west side of Old Rand Road in downtown Lake Zurich, Anping offers the freshest in live flowers, and now an interesting assortment of gift items. Her new space also accommodates special events, including flower arranging classes. Learn more at LakeZurichFlorist.com.

The Buonavolanto family has officially moved to Kildeer. Their renowned restaurant chain — Buona Beef — opened recently and it includes a taste of Chicago's Southside with a Rainbow Cone ice cream shop under the same roof. Located at the corner of Rand and Cuba roads, Don Buonavolanto, founder and director of operations, threw an impressive opening day celebration that included a fundraiser for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) supporting children in Lake County.

Take a tired old roadside tavern. Modernize it. Open the space to lovely water views. Add outside dining, and an experienced chef and management team. North Point Kitchen + Bar is now open just south of Old McHenry Road at 24238 N. Lakeside Drive. The menu is Italian-inspired; think elevated bar fare with an artisanal flair, thanks to chef/owner Joel Gilbert and his wife, Ashley. Visit NorthPointKitchenBar. com for menu, hours and additional info.

For retail therapy and more, head to Old Town Scottsdale.

For a healthy dining experience, check out any of Chris Bianco’s restaurants (Pizzeria Bianco, Pane Bianco and Tratto).

The concept of a winter wellness getaway may not have originated in Scottsdale, Arizona, but generations of Chicagoans have experienced the benefits of spending time in the desert during the coldest time of the year here. Scottsdale typically delivers sunny and warm days to do what you please. Sunrise hiking is a ritual for both snowbirds and locals. Download an app called AllTrails to find a hike that suits your ambition and abilities. In Scottsdale, there are 328 trails. The popular Camelback Mountain hike via Echo Canyon and Cholla Trail is rated “very challenging.” The view from the top is special, and if you’re fit and in shape (and carry plenty of water), an adventure awaits. There’s also the kind of hiking that includes “retail therapy” in Old Town

Scottsdale, an area spanning nine neighborhoods with lots of shops, restaurants, art galleries, museums, and historic sites from the 1880s. Old Town is a mash-up of urban chic and the Old West. Of course, walking generates a big thirst, so sit a spell inside the charmingly tiny Rusty Spur Saloon, Old Town’s legendary “Last Cowboy Bar.” The drinks are cold, the food tasty, the vibe fun and there’s always live music to scoot your booty. Scottsdale has a staggering 200 golf courses, from the humblest municipal tracks to legendarily tough championship courses. There’s something for everyone. A fun course (not too long with a scenic layout that’s grass-only from tee to green) is Starfire Golf Club. The staff is second to none. Importantly, expect your round to be four hours. CONTINUED >

Where to Stay in Scottsdale

In Europe, there’s a practice called “forest bathing.” The idea is that walking in the woods is healthy because of the sights, sounds and smells. There’s something to be said about taking the same sort of walk in a place as remarkable as the Desert Botanical Garden (DBG). Less than a 10-minute drive from Old Town, DBG is 140 acres with 50,000 plant displays including more than 500 rare and endangered species, flat and winding sidewalks (lots of shady stretches), a seemingly never-ending number of events and special exhibitions, and a cute café for a cool drink and light lunch.

The range of Scottsdale accommodations is as wide as the Valley of the Sun. Check out listings on Airbnb and VRBO for sleek apartments or whole house rentals for a big group. If you want to be in the middle of everything in Old Town Scottsdale, be sure to confirm the exact location with your host before booking. Lots of the major hotel brands are in Old Town, including Marriott, W, and Aloft. A fun and refreshed indie hotel generating lots of buzz is Hotel Valley Ho, a mid-century design with plenty of amenities and mountain views. Be advised: Valley Ho is popular with the bachelorette and babymoon crowd.

Left page, bottom: Pizzeria Bianco is a game-changer. This page: Flat walking trails abound at the Desert Botanical Garden. The dramatic blown-glass artworks featured in the photo here, at top of page 16 and on the cover are exhibits by Chihuly Studio as part of a Chihuly in the Desert exhibition at DBG.

A Healthier You In 2024 Here’s a New Way to Think About Setting Realistic Goals and Taking Simple Actions to Achieve Better Health and Wellness. ARTICLE BY SEAN LEE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

2024 is here! A new year, and time for a new fit and healthier you. Sounds good, but how to make it happen? While annually making resolutions is well intended, we all know that urgency to change fades in a matter of weeks. This leads to a depressing cycle of failed attempts year after year and the feeling that success won’t ever happen. Here's a new way to think about this. Instead of making a resolution dig deep and figure out the underlying motivation that’s driving you. A fitness resolution is rarely just about improving fitness and eating healthier. It’s more about the connection you make with yourself at an emotional level that drives inspired action to change. To find your “inspiration” grab a piece of paper, a pen, and your phone. Find a quiet place to sit and write down answers to three questions. Set a timer for five minutes and begin writing whatever comes to mind without judgment on these three questions: • What do I want?

• How do I want to feel? • What am I willing to do about it? This simple exercise will help you find your “why” and pinpoint your goal. Next, decide what commitments you’re willing to make to achieve what you want, and feel how you want to feel. Commitments are different than goals. Your goal is the outcome. Let’s say you want to lose 30 pounds. Commitments are the daily actions that build new habits and lead to a goal. Examples might include exercising three times a week for 45 minutes, eating fresh veggies in two meals a day, and getting to bed by 9 p.m. These actions should be specific and measurable. You should have no more than three commitments per month. Frankly, I suggest just one because fewer commitments at a time helps make accomplishing all of them more doable. Why? Just one commitment at a time avoids the feeling of being overwhelmed. However you approach commitments,

make sure to write them down and read them in the morning and before bed. This keeps commitments topof-mind. Focus on progress, not perfection. Once you’ve made your commitments it’s time to act and track progress. If you’re tech savvy find an app that works for you or consider keeping a journal. Keeping personal notes allows you to record your actions and how you feel. A journal helps identify patterns. Do you overeat or make unhealthy food choices when stressed out? Do you skip workouts when your schedule gets busy? Is it more difficult to be motivated on dark winter mornings? Developing awareness of your patterns will help you change them. Plus, tracking progress keeps you focused and motivated.

Most of all, have fun and reward yourself. When it comes to making long-term change, fun is essential. It’s unrealistic to consistently force yourself to do something you don’t enjoy and expect to achieve sustainable results. Find rewards that celebrate your progress without undermining your goal. Pampering yourself with a massage, manicure, or pedicure, is an excellent way to reward yourself, and recognize the progress you’ve made when you follow through on your commitments. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but as you work toward developing new habits, change will come, and it will be long-lasting. Remember this, and you will receive the greatest gift ever… the gift of health. Happy New Year!

A HEALTHY RESPECT FOR PRESERVATION IN DOWNTOWN LONG GROVE.

Historic Downtown Long Grove, celebrated for its vintage charm and legendary covered bridge, is coming together to preserve history through the creation of a historical campus as a new visitor attraction. Supported by a coalition of local government and community groups, the goal is to move an iconic barn and one-room school while making way for an expanded Village Hall better suited for managing the affairs of a growing community. “History is on the move in Long Grove,” according to Ryan Messner, President of the Historic Downtown Long Grove Business Association. “The community here is once again collaborating on a project to preserve our storied past so others may enjoy it for years to come.” In the 1840s, long before it became known for its festivals and “frozen in time” buildings, downtown Long Grove was a homestead for the Ruth family. By 1980 the population had swelled to 2,000, and the last relic of the homestead farm, Ruth Barn, was moved next to Village Hall located down a long driveway behind Kildeer Countryside Elementary School (east of Old McHenry Road). A few years earlier, in 1977, one of the area’s original one-room schools, Archer School, was also moved onto the Village Hall property. After restoring the school and barn, gradeschool students and teachers from across

the area made an annual pilgrimage to Archer School. While there they spent the morning with docents (often the mayor, board members and volunteers) to recreate the experience of a one-room school. The field trip included visiting a “farmer in Ruth Barn” who shared Long Grove history and explained how the farm implements of yesteryear worked. Flash forward to today when Long Grove’s population has grown to 8,400 and the quaint and crowded Village Hall is no longer suitable as a base for managing village operations. The board has a plan to expand Village Hall, but Ruth Barn sits squarely in the way. The solution is to literally “pick up and move” Ruth Barn and Archer School downtown in March 2024, near a historic farmhouse. Related programming and perhaps an associated festival are also being considered to attract more residents and tourists downtown. The Historic Downtown Long Grove Business Association, Long Grove Historical Society, Long Grove Village Government, and the local Lions Club are pledging support and resources. As they did with the restored and historic covered bridge, the Long Grove Historical Society is organizing a fund drive to help with the costs of the project. Those interested in contributing skills, resources or dollars should contact treasurer@ LongGroveHistory.org to learn how to get involved. Learn more at LongGrove.org.
