Why May is Such an Important Month

While writing this I glanced up from my desk to see a sudden snow flurry outside my office window. This after the evening before when we beat a hasty retreat to the basement after getting tornado warnings on phones and the TV, accompanied by sirens wailing in the distance.

You gotta love another spring in Chicago. It's ever changing. If you don't like it now, be patient and wait.

The month of May is when spring should settle around us in all its glory. Flowers, shrubs and trees bloom; lawns are mown; summer planning is in full push; and golfers, rusty as they are, enjoy a lovely walk or ride across green fairways.

May is also the time when we annually honor local women. This issue is full of stories dedicated to women, including a very special Business Monthly featuring only women business owners. Also, Staff Writer Christina Sikorski shares a story about a road trip Moms will love. We also illustrate five fun and hopefully memorable ways to celebrate with the mother figure in your life.

I recently had the privilege to meet a remarkable woman, Callen Migacz, a Barrington High School grad who is living with the tragedy of losing her daughter shortly after childbirth. She has channeled her grief into doing something for other moms experiencing the same thing. Her story includes profiles of other women and their charities that are making a difference locally.

And on a somewhat tangental interspecies-based related note: we tie up the loose ends from the dramatically true tale of fearless female local legend Tyson the Bison, whose indomitable desire to run free recently came to final fruition. Our Editor Stephen Neilson actually witnessed her original tumultuous escape camera-in-hand, photographed her dramatic leap to freedom, and details her eight-plus-month fantastic voyage through Lake and McHenry counties... and shares news of its satisfying conclusion.

Mother's Day is Sunday, May 14 when moms get their day in the sun and the warm embrace of their children. If you haven't already, make plans for brunch, a gift, a phone call, a walk in the park or time to spend with the woman who's the most important in most of our lives.

And keep an eye on the weather forecast. It's time for another May in Chicagoland.

“I was suffering with a painful injury, and thought I might be facing permanent physical limitations. I couldn’t walk more than a few steps or climb stairs without pain. While I’ve always been significantly overweight, during this time my weight skyrocketed. After so many failed attempts establishing a fitness routine, I was questioning if this time would be different… thankfully it has been! Working with the RF team I’ve made so many positive changes. The RF team has gently but effectively found the right exercises to build my strength, flexibility, and provided nutritional guidance which has helped me lose weight. I now move without pain or limitation. I feel SO much better! My doctor is ecstatic with the improvements I’ve made, which means I can avoid medication.” - Mark

Why Moms Love a Road Trip to Milwaukee

THERE’S MUCH TO EXPERIENCE DURING A VISIT TO WISCONSIN’S CREAM CITY, A SHORT DRIVE AWAY.

Milwaukee is sometimes called the “Cream City” for its light-colored clay bricks in its buildings, but many Lake County folks miss seeing that detail as they drive up I-94 toward American Family Field for a Brewers game. Next time, plan to do a little exploring. There is more to this great city than just baseball and cheese curds. You have the makings of a perfect day trip.

First stop: the Milwaukee Public Museum (MPM. edu) for natural history with a side of living creatures like sloths and a boa constrictor, featured in a “Survival of the Slowest” special exhibit closing May 19. From butterflies to dinosaurs, and from the cobblestones of Old Milwaukee to the canopy of a twostory rain forest, there is something for everyone.

From the museum, make a quick walk down a lonely alley and look for a plain red door near an ornate lantern with a small plaque reading “International Exports Ltd.” There are no other markings to confirm you have arrived at SafeHouse (Safe-House.com). During the day, junior spies will go through their mission log while enjoying

eats and treats. On weekend evenings, missions are reserved for spies 21 and over. Just one catch: don’t expect to get in unless you know the password. (No hints here, dear readers!)

After completing a proper meal and mission, move on to research your next assignment. Floor-to-ceiling reads await you at independent bookstore Downtown Books Bought and Sold ( DowntownBooksOnline. com). This hidden gem has friendly staff, well organized shelves, and resident cuddly kittens to help you browse. The selection is impressive, and you can easily spend a few hours lost in the stacks.

When it’s time for drinks along the Milwaukee River check out the fantastic Lakefront Brewery ( LakeFrontBrewery.com). Tours are offered daily and boast facts, jokes, and a souvenir pint glass with your pours. It’s an easy vibe here, with a large open beer hall with counter service for food and drinks, all of it delicious. The brewery offers ales, stouts, lagers, and IPAs, even a delicious non-alcohol root beer made with real maple syrup. One order of fried cheese curds will not be enough.

According to  VisitMilwaukee.org , Milwaukee has more frozen custard stands per capita than any other city. While we enjoy Culver’s here at home, Milwaukee visitors should head straight for local favorite Kopp’s (Kopps.com). Opened in 1950 by Elsa Kopp, the Milwaukee metro area now has three locations scooping frozen custard across a gleaming silver countertop that runs the length of the store. Try the ever-surprising flavor-of-the-day (like German Apple Streusel or Red Velvet Oreo) or stick to classic vanilla or chocolate. Each scoop is served with a triangle-shaped wafer cookie and a smile.

In line for our custard, a lady grabs me and says, “There’s a lot of people in here, that’s how you know it is good.” Then she toasted me with her waffle cone and headed out the door.

Cheers to you, Milwaukee: you’re our great neighbor to the north.

Editor’s Note: There’s lots more to see and do in Milwaukee, including the Milwaukee Art Museum, Mitchell Park Domes and the Harley-Davidson Museum. To learn more check out the Official Visitors Guide at VisitMilwaukee.org

Local Women Find Purpose Through Helping Others

Callen Migacz, of Rae of Light

In Long Grove Rae of Sunshine Foundation was founded by Callen and Dan Migacz in honor of their daughter, Raegan Lee, who passed away just a few days after she was born. In week 39 of her pregnancy Callen had an emergency C-section due to a tear in her placenta. Raegan lived only for a few days due to damage in her internal organs.

“I was in shock,” Callen recalled. “Everything had been going so well up until the end.” Generous donations from a Go Fund Me campaign were applied to a not-for-profit to provide support and assistance to other families. The foundation engages in two annual fund-raising events – a golf outing and family picnic – to provide the resources to build memorial gardens for families who have lost a child under similar circumstances. Callen’s husband, Dan, is the CFO of A.M. Woodland Outdoor Design, a contracting company in Lake County, Southeast Wisconsin and Colorado. The foundation works with families to create a design for a memorial garden, and the company provides the materials and installation.

“I was so consumed by my grief that I faced a decision,” Callen said. “Would I let the grief control me, or could I use it for something good by keeping the memory of my daughter alive by helping others?”

Callen gives her husband credit for launching the foundation. “Anybody who knows Dan knows he’s a go-getter,” Callen said. “At first the grief was so overwhelming I wasn’t sure if this was the right thing for us to do. I am so glad that he kept us moving forward with the belief that we could do something for other families facing the same thing we are.”

Raegan’s Memorial Garden is in a sunny wooded area not far from the Migazc home. It’s a simple but spacious site with heritage oaks. Even on an April day the garden with a bench overlooking plantings and a flat stone memorializing their little girl is a contemplative spot. Callen visits frequently, often with just the family dog who enjoys carefree romps. “I like to go there to sit alone and remember Raegan,” Callen said. “It’s nice for me to just be alone in my thoughts about her.”

The foundation’s second annual golf outing is May 30 at Kemper Lakes Golf Club. For more information, and to learn about registration and sponsorship availabilities, go to RaeofSunshine.foundation

In Wauconda, STAR Charities was founded by Linda Starkey and her husband’s company, Progressive Components. “STAR,” which stands for Sharing Time and Resources, was registered as a charitable foundation in 2003 and is a volunteer-run organization.

STAR Charities has reached over $1,000,000 in top-line revenues since its founding. Throughout the year, STAR hosts and sponsors many events such as food drives, Shamrock the Block, Turkey Trot, Bunny Hop, a coat drive and more.

STAR funding helps to provide much-needed food, clothing and other necessities to those less fortunate by working with local food pantries and schools. STAR also donates to local organizations such as Friends of Bangs Lake and the Wauconda Township Historical Society.

The list of other organizations receiving donations from STAR is extensive, and includes Ronald McDonald House of Chicago and Northwest Indiana, Amina Grace Memorial Fund, Nicasa Behavioral Health Services, Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation, Riddick’s Ride, Heartland Animal Shelter, Canine Companions for Independence and Rebuilding Together. Let It Be Us is a nonprofit organization, and a licensed child welfare agency, based in Barrington with a mission to provide support for children in the foster care system and to facilitate the placement process.

The organization was founded in 2014 by Susan McConnell, an adoptive parent, who recognized the need for additional resources to assist both children and families in the foster care system.

Let It Be Us offers a variety of programs and services to support children in foster care, including a Placement Support Program focusing on traditional and special needs, and a Springboard to Adulthood Program that focuses on placement and support for teens in foster care, including those young people about to age out of the system.

The charity also partners with Illinois DCFS, other agencies, community organizations, and nonprofits to advocate for policies and programs that benefit children in foster care and promote positive change in the child welfare system.

“The children and teens we serve are the most vulnerable,” McConnell says. “When we provide them with a family, we give them opportunities to have beautiful lifetime outcomes.”

Other notable charities and nonprofit organizations founded by or run by local women include:

Shane's Foundation was launched by Lisa Siefert from Barrington Hills in honor of her son Shane, who passed away at the age of two from injuries sustained when a dresser fell on him. The organization's mission is to raise awareness about furniture tip-over accidents and to support families affected by this preventable tragedy. Learn more at ShanesFoundation.org

Since 2010, Barrington Children’s Charities , founded by the family of Darby Hills, has been a not-for-profit charitable organization dedicated to positively impacting the lives of children. The charity has funded more than $1.4 million in basic medical, nutritional, and social services for children within Barrington School District 220. These basic services were unavailable due to economic constraints within the children’s family unit. Learn more at BarringtonChildrensCharities.com

TYSON’S LEAP FOR FREEDOM

Her steely glance shot straight through me when she bolted from the trailer, and sent a clear message: "I’ve got places to go, and this ain’t it." Thus her legendary 251-day trek through the area was launched (September 2021–May 2022).

As the yet-unnamed, intrepid bison ran free as the wind, social media ran free as well, taking control of the narrative regarding its name (and its adventures). Early leader “Tyson the Bison” refused to yield, even when discovered that she was female. “Tyson” shook off name-challengers “Billy” and “Billie” as easily as she shook off the unauthorized camo-garbed, chase-dog-supported rabble that tried initially to hunt her down.

I watched it happen, all-too-live, from just a few feet away: a sudden, spontaneous explosion of flesh, fur, horns and hooves.

Having received a tip about a new pair of bison coming to Milk and Honey Farm between Wauconda and Island Lake, I stopped by to snap a few shots. We all waited over an hour while the deliverers got lost on their way from northern Wisconsin, mistakenly passing far south and having to circle back (extending what was already a long, hot and uncomfortable ride for their live bison cargo). Eventually they arrived and backed their truck up for delivery.

Tyson’s sister emerged first; her dismount from the trailer and initial slow jog around her new home was uneventful.

Tyson’s was not. In a burst of pent-up fury, she bolted from the trailer and sprinted off, taking one quick look back before somehow launching over and/or through the inner fence into a neighboring pasture. The other farm animals fled in fear as she scoped out the scene and sprinted suddenly to the west, swirling off into the distance like a wild Bisonado.

At first seemingly every local, state, and social media outlet chimed in, and her legend grew only larger:

• The Chicago Tribune noted she somehow forged the Fox River on her way west. She checked into Cary in September, did her “jogging bison” routine for Mark Stage’s camera along Darrell Road, and was spotted in Volo, Crystal Lake, Lake Zurich, and beyond.

• Various police departments helped hype the legend. Island Lake shared video of her dashing across Darrell Road in November, and shared their April Fool’s Day version of a “new police patch” featuring a bison logo.

• A Lake County Deputy Chief wryly suggested, “She’s become an expert at being ‘cowmoo-flaged’, blending in with her surroundings,” in correspondence with the Tribune.

• The Lake McHenry Scanner reported that the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said on social media that they “cannot confirm or deny” a post made in the “Wauconda For Wauconda” Facebook group that “Tyson the Bison” might be responsible for some of the damage to the historic

The Tribune again came through with the straight scoop in a post: Tyson couldn’t have been in Long Grove, as alert citizen Margaret Slove caught her on video that day at a busy Hawthorne Woods intersection, trotting about on her early morning constitutional. In the winter and spring of 2022 Tyson frequently traveled back near the farm, as bison hoofprints in the snow indicated, perhaps seeking a glimpse of her sister.

Farm owner Scott Comstock spent many months trying to recapture Tyson. His efforts included working with forest preserve rangers and leaving sweetened food out to help lure her into an enclosure nearby set up for her capture, but the wily bison would have none of it. As Comstock told the Daily Herald they came very close to shutting the enclosure door with her inside, but she has such keen senses that she avoided capture each time. “She is so smart and so alert that when you get close to the door, she beats you to it,” Comstock said.

Although the bison never approached humans or behaved in a menacing way toward them, spring brought more frequent Tyson sightings in the Lakewood Forest Preserve and potential

concerns for public safety increased. Lake County Forest Preserve District officials set a deadline before Memorial Day 2022 with $500-per-day fines until the bison was removed. Soon thereafter the Forest Preserve worked independently with a professional livestock specialist who administered a light tranquilizer, dulling Tyson’s senses enough to coax her into a trailer, soon bound for a farm in Boone County near the Wisconsin border. She remained there for many months while the complicated issues related to the fines, her actual ownership, and her final fate were turned over to lawyers and the court system.

As reported by Mick Zawislak of the Daily Herald, in July 2022 the court granted a “motion for preservation” filed by Comstock’s attorney to ensure that no harm would come to Tyson and that she would be fed and cared for until final disposition was determined.

Although Comstock originally had intended to purchase Tyson and breed her on his farm, the long, challenging experience of trying to capture her and observing her strong natural aversion to captivity convinced him that she really needed to be in a place where she can roam free. She had proven herself to be independent, highly intelligent, and able to survive in the wild.

Ultimately, the parties involved agreed; last November, the motion for preservation was replaced with an order allowing Tyson to be turned over to an Intertribal Buffalo Council to be placed on lands out of state that the council deemed fit.

And now, the rest of the story: the long and winding road of Tyson’s legendary tale was finally resolved in court this February. Judge Raymond D. Collins ruled that the delivery of Tyson to Comstock was never completed, therefore he was indeed neither its owner nor liable for citations related to its temporary presence in the Lakewood Forest Preserve.

Meanwhile, her sister has turned into a favorite on the Farmstead. She earned her name, “Twinkle Toes”, fair and square: “We put her in the field with the horses early on when she joined us, and when the horses would start to prance about, she would try to imitate them,” said the farm's Sunny Krycha last summer. She also noted how Twinkle

Toes would try to copy the horses as they rolled around on their backs in the hay (a task made quite difficult due to her bison hump). Twinkle Toes is well acclimated and reportedly has a love interest in the farm's cattle herd, with hopes of successful breeding in the future.

And fans of Twinkle Toes’ famous sister can rejoice, as Tyson the Bison now runs free with her kind at the Forest County Potawatomi Reservation in Northern Wisconsin.
