PUTTING TOGETHER OUR JULY 2019 SW LAKE LIFESTYLE REMINDED ME YET AGAIN WHAT A SPLENDID SMORGASBORD OF LIFE EXPERIENCES IS SERVED UP HOT AND STEAMING, WITHOUT FAIL, IN BEAUTIFUL SW LAKE COUNTY. It was way too much fun being the photographer fly-on-the-wall guest at the equipment fitting session to kick off the newest season for the Lake Zurich Flames, a fine local youth football and cheerleading organization. Kids of all shapes, sizes, ages, and (yes) genders waited (im)patiently in line to try on pads, uniforms, and more. The obvious attention and focus on safety was apparent, and reassuring. Displayed prominently on the check-in table were a couple of helmets that exhaustive safety testing had proven not up to the task of another season and were, well, honorably discharged from duty.

Adult coaches and older league players assisted the new kids in finding the right gear for a perfect and safe fit. Several sisters and younger siblings tagged along to help schlep the newly acquired treasures, and I did notice one young lady who wasn't just carrying someone else's gear but getting fitted for her own: Layne Nordstrom, the pro-

LAKE COUNTY SETS NEW FLOOD STAGE RECORD IN 2018 Lake County has been experiencing more frequent and stronger rainfall events and hit a new record in 2018 when it went above flood stage during six separate storm events, according to Craig Taylor, Lake County Board Supervisor. With current rainfall trends, Lake County could be on track to break 2018's flood stage exceedance in 2019. WHEN PAUL WHEATLAND MOVED BACK TO SW LAKE COUNTY A FEW YEARS AGO HE WAS READY TO PURSUE TWO OF HIS PASSIONS: MUSIC AND AN OUTDOOR LIFESTYLE. When he and his partner, Tammy Harmon, purchased Main Street Outfitter (MSO) in Wauconda, a bike shop & pub, he satisfied both pursuits.

One thing he missed from his life in Southern California was bike rides along the beach. WHY MY SONS PLAY FOOTBALL

The Flames are dedicated to concussion prevention and awareness. All athletes participate in pre-season baseline concussion testing, a set of neuro-cognitive tests that measures visual and verbal memory, reaction time and processing speed on a computer, and can be used to guide treatment and safe return to play. “We have partnered with sports neurologist Dr. Erik Beltran to speak at our town hall meetings and provide his professional insights into concussion prevention and management,” Zawilenski says. “At all home games, we provide certified athletic trainers with the ultimate authority to remove a player from competition in order to expedite injury treatment and avoid premature return to play.”

“I am always certain to inform parents of student athletes that there is risk involved with playing youth football,” Beltran says.

“When deciding to play parents and athletes have to weigh the {modest} risk versus potential benefits a child may receive from participation. It’s an individualized decision, and for me personally, I do not feel the risk outweighs the benefits and would let my children participate in youth football.”

This year we will hold a community event at Knox Park to commemorate our 45th season. It will be to celebrate the past, present and future of our program. While it’s an opportunity for our current families to come together, it also will be a time for anyone interested to check us out. It’s an event that not only encompasses what a true hometown youth sports program is about, but who we want our children to grow up to be.

Years after leaving the Flames many alumni have shared what youth football meant to them. Jack Sanborn, a player currently at the University of Wisconsin, says: “The Flames is where my passion for football first began. Football has given me opportunities that I never knew were possible and that journey all started with the Flames.”

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).
