GAN LAST YEAR. That’s when our team put together the themes for every issue. That’s followed up with meetings – quarterly and monthly – to plot the actual progress for what your SW Lake Lifestyle Editor, Stephen Neilson, calls “making a magazine.” There’s setting assignments, checking with clients, getting suggestions from readers, photographing, editing, proofing (and editing and proofing and editing and more proofing). Finally, we are at the pointing of writing this column, a task Stephen and I take turns tackling. It’s now when I realize just how blessed we are with such a wealth of stories. Too many, in fact, for this month, our first-ever “Guys Issue" (we're saving one to roll into a feature article coming soon). First Long Grove Beer Fest Draws Crowd to Celebrate Suds The Long Grove Beer Fest brought craft beer lovers from near and far. The warm weather created a perfect setting for live music, delicious food and quality locally-made beer. Mike Marr, founder and chief brewer at Buffalo Creek Brewing in Long Grove, curated a broad range of

Playing soothing music for an old friend in hospice who woke up to say, "That was beautiful!" before dozing off again. It was the last thing I ever heard him say. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. I grew up in a musical family, and am married to a wonderful woman, Lisa, who loves and encourages my music. The rest of my family lives out of state. We love hosting an annual Christmas Eve dinner for those like us who are distant from family. FAVORITE CAUSE? It's very important that we all work together to keep the arts in public schools.

I was a 20-year IT professional before becoming a stay-at-home dad for my daughters. Recently I began a new chapter doing something that provides personal gratification. After several different approaches, we were pretty frustrated... but suddenly something clicked, and it was like finding that one piece of the jigsaw puzzle that you've long been searching for.

WHO WERE YOUR MENTORS? Norton Williams (retired master beekeeper) introduced me to beekeeping when I was 10 years old. Jon Schechter (Naturalist, writer of nature) showed me how great nature is. Ted Whorle and Lee Record (golf course superintendents) taught me how to observe your surroundings, and never stop learning. A FAVORITE RECENT MEMORY? Our family visited a small town in the Swiss Alps and went “sledging” down the the mountains. Sledging is kind of like sledding, but takes 2-3 hours to get to the bottom of the “hill” on an old wooden style sled. Highly recommended for anyone traveling to Switzerland!

The venerable theater, since spruced up considerably from when Perlman sought cinematic escape as a kid, is where his love for movies began. “I saw some of my favorite movies of all time at the Catlow,” Perlman says. “Groundhog Day,”

People” and that version of Peter Pan with Robin Williams and Julia Roberts (“Hook”).” Before heading off to the University of Iowa to study Creative Writing and Psychology, movies provided a refuge for Perlman who lost his father when he was just seventeen. “Losing my dad like I did provided some of the inspiration for Andover,” he says. It’s never easy losing a parent, but teenage boys are especially vulnerable. Perlman was lucky; he had some influential Barrington men providing guidance after his father passed, including Bill Kennedy, Ron Hahn and Mike Miller. When told recently that Perlman considered him a father figure, Miller’s eyes briefly flooded with tears. Miller, a long-time area jeweler and owner of M. J. Miller & Co., says of the teenage Perlman, “he had such a great imagination and tremendous potential. He was very creative back then and you could see the talent.” Now Perlman, and Miller, punctuate their mutual success with the premiere of “Andover” before a home town audience. Perlman is coming home. Miller is basking in what the young man has become. The Midwest Premiere of Andover will be June 2 & 3 at the Catlow Theater, 116 W. Main Street in Barrington.
