Homegrown and Locally Made: BOOM!
FEBRUARY 2017
Love... love changes everything / Hands and faces, earth and sky Love... love changes everything / How you live, and how you die —Andrew Lloyd Webber, Aspects of Love
PUBLISHER
Michael Beightol | Michael.Beightol@LifestylePubs.com EDITOR
I
t’s February, and to the delight of many and dismay of others, that Cupid character is about to tuck an arrow’s tip ‘round the Stephen Neilson corner of our calendars and empty his quiver to celebrate his vision of Valentine’s Day. Like many modern holidays, February 14 is a multi-cultural mixtape—featuring influences by ancient Rome’s fertility feast of Lupercalia, a 5th century upgrade by the Catholic Church to honor martyred St. Valentine, a rash of romantic runes by Chaucer and Shakespeare ramping up the heat, and a blooming tradition of exchanging sweet handmade cards (big with the Brits in the 1700s) that bodaciously blossomed in America. We celebrate in songs and sonnets and snapchats, cards and candy, flowers and feasts, flirtatious fashion and fine jewelry—over 60% percent of us celebrate Valentine’s Day somehow, surveys say. The results can be a mixtape too—the loved feeling lovely, but the lonely left lingering in winter chill—inspiring an unspoken challenge for us all to share a little love and good will with everyone this month, not just sweethearts and valentines. A time for a little creativity, and inspiration, and character-building. A little love: it can change everything. February in SW Lake county features so much more than a romantic holiday whose history earns it a Facebook status of “It’s complicated”—at SW Lake Lifestyle it’s our Homegrown and Locally Made issue: • Vote for your favorite local businesses in our “2017 Best of SW Lake Awards”; nominations are in, and polls are open • See how Primrose School of Long Grove locally builds character and a lasting love for learning • Feeling lucky? Keep that glow reading our feature on local artist Russ Riendeau and his striking statue rescued from the flames, “Juniper’s Fire” • Rising from its ashes yet once more, relive The King’s Manor 25th Anniversary • For those last-minute V-Day gifts, we’ve got some hot suggestions for you

Country Club Estates, located at the southern tip of Long Grove, is one of the village’s premier neighborhoods. The subdivision, between Route 83, Old 53 and Checker Roads, surrounds the Grove Country Club (formerly Hillcrest). It is one of the oldest subdivisions in the village, with homes built as early as 1960 and over the ensuing decades in nine phases. There are 288 lots in the neighborhood, almost all of them with homes. One of the most popular neighborhoods in Long Grove, this subdivision is known for an abundance of beautiful landscaping with mature trees and manicured lawns. It is within walking distance of

when 19-month old Emily Hart sees her parents through the classroom window and realizes that it’s time to leave her friends and teachers at Primrose School in Long Grove. She’s spent the day there, and she begins to pout as she clings to her father and mother, Erik and Keri Hart of Lake Zurich. The Harts have come to pick up Emily, but little Emily wants no part of the school day ending. “She never wants to leave,” Keri confessed, while attempting to soothe her daughter. Wait. A child who doesn’t want to leave school? “It is actually pretty common here,” Jenny Wierzchon acknowledged. Wierzchon, along with her husband Rich, opened the newly built Primrose School in August. Wierzchon has spent her entire career in early childhood education and was so impressed with the Primrose model of early education, started 30 years ago in Marietta, Georgia, that she and Rich purchased a franchise. “It’s the best curriculum I have ever seen,” she said, adding that many of the students at her school are children of teachers that appreciate the way Primrose Schools nurture an early, lifelong love of learning. The school accepts children from six weeks to pre-kindergarten, and also has after-school and summer programs for students up to 12 years old, with plans for kindergarten classes in the future.

PRIMROSE SCHOOL (CON TI N U ED)
According to Wierzchon, the Primrose philosophy embraces a research-based “balanced learning” approach that includes character development as part of each day’s lesson plan, using 12 beloved character puppets (one for each month of the year) and other unique learning tools to develop empathy, good manners, compassion and kindness, among other core values, at an early age and in an age-appropriate manner. Even infants have a curriculum, focused on developing motor skills, curiosity, and wonder. The Wierzchons opened the newly built school, located on McHenry Road just north of Route 22 in Long Grove, in August. The building boasts a high tech security system, a commercial kitchen run by a full-time chef, onsite WiFi, Wii games for the older children, and iPads for students and teachers alike. Teachers can send parents on-the-fly photos of milestones and activities or provide them with an end-of day digital or emailed report.
An enthusiastic student high-fives Mrs. Wierzchon during class.
“You really have to experience the school firsthand, with a tour, to understand why Primrose is so different,” said Wierzchon. “It feels like a family atmosphere,” said Keri Hart, who eventually soothed her daughter Emily by telling her they’d be back again soon. NOTE: The public is invited to an Open House at Primrose School on Saturday, February 11 from 9:00 a.m. till 11:00 a.m., at 3985 N. O
ne of Chicago’s most popular dinner theaters from the late 1970s through
mid-1990s was the medieval-themed King’s Manor: a bold, bawdy musical-comedy review. It was unique entertainment — a six-course banquet-style meal (no silverware allowed) with freeflowing beer and wine, served by beautiful singing Wenches. The food was feastly, the songs were salacious, and the humor was slapstick, and often improvised — all performed by a gifted group of singers, dancers, musicians, and comedians in the guise of Wenches, Kings, Minstrels, and Jesters. The King’s Manor closed in the mid-1990s, but its unique work environment bred a particularly tight-knit group of friends who attended annual Wench Retreats and frequent family gatherings. Over the years, the cast’s spouses heard countless tales of the King’s Manor, and

FIRE
ARTICLE STEPHEN NEILSON WITH RUSS RIENDEAU | PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHEN NEILSON
S
oon after the once-beautiful, 40-year old Juniper tree tumbled to the ground in a pile of chopped branches and twigs,
artist Russ Riendeau recalls the sight of the fire pit full of random cuttings and branches ready to be set ablaze when one large branch caught his attention: a shape that resembled the silhouette of a wild horse. He reached into the tangled web of wood and saved the limb, setting it aside. Over the next year, he worked diligently with the limb, removing layers of bark and stems — “Anything that wasn’t a horse”, as Russ explains. After 50-plus hours with saws, hammers, shaping tools, chisels, hasps, dremels, drills, and sandpaper, the image of “Juniper’s Fire” emerged. Once finished with special teak oil, he transported it to a foundry in Oregon, Illinois to be cast into a very limited edition (7) bronze piece. The “lucky” number 7 was chosen not just of the limb’s own good fortune being saved from the fire, but from a remarkable event just a few days before.
