Happy New Year

I

like cold weather. There’s nothing like a crisp January morning with the hint of snow in the air and a slippery run to the top of the driveway to get the morning paper. A worn pair of jeans, a favorite button-down shirt and a warm sweater suits me. A pair of sturdy Doc Martens gets me around. A fading fashion sense prompts me to grab a heavy leather jacket most days. Other times when the temperature dips below freezing, I’m more likely to don a ski jacket and touque (knit cap to any non-hockey lovers).

In the fall I checked the tires to be sure the tread was good. Also bought firewood. The crockpot gets a real workout this time of year: soup, chili, pasole or stew. All foods that are simple, rich and fortifying (plus the house smells great at the end of a work day). Prepared as we are for winter, January is time to look ahead. A few of our local experts do so in this issue, noting the trends we’ll being watching as 2017 unfolds. This is the time for New Year’s resolutions to kick into high gear; getting in shape is at the top of a lot of lists. We offer here insights on fitness apps to help meet your goals, and take a peek inside a fitness buff’s gym bag. Last year ended well for SW Lake Lifestyle. The team expanded when Stephen Neilson came aboard as Editor. Known around these parts for his photography, storytelling and blues harmonica playing, I am delighted that Stephen’s steady hand and creative mind are guiding the editorial side of this enterprise. He’s a true community evangelist and we’re lucky to have him. Finally, while I enjoy winter, one of the wonderful aspects of living in SW Lake County is this: O’Hare is a short drive away. When a chill creeps deep in your bones it’s good to know a quick getaway to a warm beach is as near as a flight to someplace south.

Wauconda High School's Les Misérables an ambitious delight

Wauconda High School’s recent staging of their fall musical, “Les Misérables”, was an inspiring stunner. From its ambitious stagecraft to the rock-solid orchestra, outstanding costumes, smooth scene transitions, and impassioned acting and singing by the student cast, director Scott Metzger and team's production was a delightful evening of local theater.

Construction crews swarmed Wilmot Mountain before the first snow

LOCAL SKI & SNOWBOARD RESORT RE-IMAGINED Already, visitors to the venerable Wilmot Mountain, just up the road past Fox Lake and over the state line, are finding lots of changes they like, thanks to new owners (Vail Resorts) and a big chunk of change ($13 million in improvements). “While we think our guests will be thrilled with the on-mountain improvements, such as new chairlifts and state-of the art snowmaking, it’s the adoption of best practices in all aspects of guest service and on-mountain operations that will further elevate Wilmot Mountain,” says Taylor Ogilvie, general manager. New lifts, rope tows and surface conveyors will increase capacity by up to 45 percent. The entire base lodge has been transformed with more seating and upgraded food and beverages. There’s a new bar for adults and Wi-Fi for everyone. CONTINUED >

Generations of kids took their first turns at Wilmot. That will continue with a dedicated children’s ski and snowboard center at the base, featuring a playful open space for kids along with their own lunch and break room. The transformation of Wilmot Mountain includes opportunities now for guests to purchase Vail Resorts’ season passes, which offer flexibility to choose options based on how much, and where, they plan to ski and snowboard. What this means is that skiing at Wilmot Mountain can be linked to nine world-class resorts out West: Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin in Colorado; Park City in U.S. Rep. LONG GROVE SCOUTS MAKE IMPROVEMENTS AT REED-TURNER Significant improvements at Reed-Turner Nature Center were recently completed through outstanding efforts by local Boy and Girl Scouts and their support teams: • Anthony Sorgani and team constructed a “missing link” in the boardwalk which carries visitors across a flood-prone meadow, so visitors won't have to walk through mud during the rainy season. • Andrew Hammon and team refurbished and stabilized a bird

The scouts, dads, moms, and expert consultants all played key roles in completing these projects and successfully achieving their scouting awards. Park District President Jane Wittig thanked the scouts and their support teams, commenting, “It is inspiring to see the teamwork and active support these scouts get from family, friends, and our expert consultants {that} help the scouts mature into successful and caring citizens.” 12

Above The Rim

When Art Meets Capitalism Dr. Russ Riendeau is a local artist, headhunter (the recruiting-professional kind) and behavioral scientist who sees today’s world audience as thirsty for creative outlets. Consumed by 24x7 media and bright screens, humans are being entertained to death, while their gifts and potential sit dormant on couches around the globe. As our economy reboots, watch for more people re-engaging in passionate hobbies and test-driving physical and emotional skills in their free time, as well as on the job. Riendeau believes that more than ever, business and civic leaders will see the creative arts as necessary tools of commerce to flush out new ideas and positive attitudes in the workplace, as capitalism faces the shifting future head-on. 2017 TRENDS (CON TI N U ED)

The Trendspotters Team

Healthy lifestyle choices: a new wave of awareness More men today are making active choices for better health. Jeff Eggert, owner of Eighteen Eight (an upscale men’s salon in Barrington), and Dr. Jason Van Ness of Van Ness Chiropractic shared their observations: Eggert notes how more men actively work to look good and be healthy. His salon's focus is on grooming care; winter weather can lead to dry skin, and facials using organic products fitting men's unique skin chemistry are increasingly popular. Men increasingly seek solutions for thinning hair that are Jason Van Ness, Van Ness Chiropractic

non-surgical, affordable, and effective; Eggert's salon offers options from a healthy scalp treatment regimen to low-level laser therapy. Eighteen Eight works with non-profit Eyes on Cancer to train all stylists to recognize early signs of skin cancer, and how to tactfully recommend customers be checked out when appropriate - a potentially life-saving proposition. Van Ness also notes an increasing trend in men seeking not only treatment, but preventative care. While sports-related issues still drive the majority of men's visits, he sees more men proactively investing in health. Planning a healthy diet and lifestyle; taking time for periodic alignments that balance the musculature and nervous system; avoiding excesses in alcohol, dairy, processed food, and sugar that cause inflammation and can lead to spinal issues and more; all reflect the increasingly proactive trend. Van Ness’ practice reflects a patient-focused balance, with half wellness-based, and half crisis/corrective-based, providing comprehensive care for both the short and long term.

mon connection to what’s fresh and local. McGinty’s restaurant strongly engages with the “Farm to table” movement, which helps diners at Farmhouse on North trust their food sources when dining out, as they know they’re not sacrificing quality. And it’s not just food; customers crave locally brewed craft beers and spirits, in line with growing sentiment that “it’s better when it’s made here”. Many of McGinty’s regulars frequently order take-out, an encouraging indicator that the fresh food movement is picking up momentum, and that sipping and supping on what’s made locally is the real “comfort” with food. Nick Jaros manages Neoteca, a family-owned, authentic woodfired pizzeria and wine bar in downtown Barrington. Jaros notes that local family-owned establishments can be more immersive in the community and better understand its needs. He also notes the trend of foods increasingly following the seasons, predicting that Neoteca dishes such as calamari will be clamored for as cold sets in; light-bodied red wines from their extensive Italian wine list will prevail through winter, with whites and roses to bloom tableside next spring. Neoteca also uses as much local produce as possible, flexing their menu to serve fresh dishes in season. CONTINUED >

2017 TRENDS (CON TI N U ED)

Gus T. Bull, Windy City Bulls Mascot

Smaller, cordless, connected. (Who needs a TV to watch TV?) Michael Drelicharz, owner of the Wireless Zone in Barrington, sees every day the increased trend toward cordless, hands-free connectivity, for compliance, safety, and convenience. Bluetooth has evolved to where certain phone manufacturers (think “fruit”) have removed the headphone jack entirely. Other brands such as Samsung have focused on making Virtual Reality less virtual and more a reality, selling viewers that pair with phones to provide a dynamic viewing experience. Although the rate of increased processor speed year after year is tapering off (is the end of Moore’s Law approaching?), new devices still push for longer battery life and better quality cameras. Though large-screen TVs grow ever larger, the countertrend is that small is the new big: as smartphones replace landlines, so are smartphones and tablets replacing TVs for many, with new content apps enabling a-la-carte access to a wide range of channels, movies, games, and immersive entertainment.

Millennials on the move Real estate agent Renée Clark shared some interesting housing market projections for 2017. Many who have waited (based on their losses in equity from the 2008 crash) are now eager to move, resulting in a surplus of homes on the market this spring, with Millennials projected to comprise 56% of first-time buyers. With new programs offering down payment grants, lower-money-down requirements, and rising interest Play Ball!

rates, Millennials are motivated to make their move. Another 2017 trend: purchasing smaller homes with upgraded features but less space to maintain. Prices should rise by approximately 4.8% in Illinois in a strong real estate market.

DON'T JUST

"VEG OUT"

- GET YOUR FRUIT ON, TOO ARTICLE EMILY MAYBERRY

E

ating a healthy diet is just as important as getting routine check-ups with

your doctor. Organic fresh fruits and vegetables are powerhouses full of vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and health benefits. Eating a variety of colors is not only appealing to the eye; the rainbow reflects a range of nutritional compositions. You may be surprised at the benefits of even the most common fruits and vegetables. Trying to add some flavor and health to your meals? Here are some great options that are nutrient-dense and tasty:

Cucumbers are a powerful ally when it comes to healthy food choices. Feeling parched? Cucumbers are 95% water, with the rest a powerful mixture of minerals and healing compounds. Use slices of cucumber as you would use aloe for skin abrasions, burns,

CUCUMBER

or to reduce inflammation. The silica, magnesium, and potassium they contain are ideal for strengthening and smoothing both the hair and skin. Cucumbers are also excellent for stabilizing blood pressure. A compound called sterols helps reduce cholesterol, while the magnesium, potassium, and fiber can help stabilize either high or low blood pressure. There is also a hormone in cucumbers required by the pancreas to properly regulate insulin levels - particularly beneficial for diabetics. Silica is an important factor in promoting joint health by strengthening connective tissues, and cucumber is a good source for your silica needs. Onions have been a wide-ranging remedy in many traditional medicines for a very long time. Uses include treating asthma, bacterial infections, coughing, and colds. Their pungent smell is caused by their high levels of sulfur, which on the positive side promotes cardiovascular health through its anti-clotting characteristics. In Ayurvedic Medicine (one of the world's oldest holistic medical systems, developed in India over 3000 years ago), onions

are sliced and wrapped in cloth as a poultice used on areas of inflammation, or on the chest and feet to cure colds, coughs, and fevers. Including an ample supply of onions in your diet helps your body build up bone density and joint health. Forming connective tissues requires sulfur, which onions can amply supply.

FACT:

Research shows that helping others is a key to happiness. GRAPEFRUIT

Grapefruit’s health benefits are often underestimated. Kidney stones are mostly a build-up of calcium; eating grapefruit or drinking its juice will help prevent them. The high levels of Vitamin C in grapefruit can help prevent sun damage, wrinkles, and improve overall skin condition. Vitamin C also helps create collagen, the main support system of the skin, and minimizes the loss of hyaluronic acid, which the skin needs to retain moisture and elasticity. Grapefruit is a wonderful liver cleanser, as it promotes the removal of toxins from the body. Known to increase your metabolism, grapefruit also can assist with weight loss or maintenance.

TOMATO

Tomatoes have a large profile of vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin K, B vitamins, iron, folate, magnesium, choline, potassium, and zinc. They help improve the function of the digestive system and particularly help prevent constipation, especially when juiced along with spinach. Tomatoes have a rich supply of the phytonutrients lutein, beta-carotene, and zeaxanthin which support vision health.

BALANCED LEARNING® WAY:

Helping people sure feels good!

Including tomatoes in your daily diet can increase the amount of vitamin C in the blood, which strengthens the immune system and inhibits the release of stress hormones. Other phytonutrients in tomatoes help prevent blood from over-clotting, helping improve heart health. It's amazing what perfect packages nature has made in fruits and vegetables. They're not just tasty, but help promote and maintain our good health. Enjoy longevity and steady energy through a well-balanced diet including fresh fruits and vegetables; eat all the colors of the rainbow to enjoy the wide variety of minerals, nutrients,

ECUADOR Journey beyond Darwin’s evolutionary wonders into Ecuador’s amazing interior and its astonishing contrasts: Volcanic peaks, cloud forest, jungles, and colonial cities with centuries of history. Revel over some of the most fantastic train rides in the world, horseback ride high in the Andes, watch llamas roam the fields, and stay in elegant hotels such as the Mashpi Lodge, perched 3,000 feet above sea level.

Combine two exceptional vacations into one by adding a 4 or 5 day cruise to the Galapagos Islands, where giant tortoises roam freely, rare birds preen on rocky shores, and tiny penguins swim in droves beneath crystalline waters. RIVER CRUISES The river cruise industry is booming, offering a more intimate and cultural experience than larger ocean liners. Usually with 160 passengers or less, guests embark these floating hotels right in the center of cities, immediately immersed in local culture. Watch for emerging river cruises in China, Africa, Southeast Asia, and even the USA. ICELAND

There are a million reasons why you should visit Iceland, starting with the amazing Aurora Borealis, at its most spectacular in February and March. Iceland’s mountains, volcanoes, and glaciers are good for hiking, climbing and dog-sledding; its waves great for surfing; its caves for exploring; and its barren highlands for jeep safaris. With such rugged beauty and diversity, no wonder Iceland tops so many Bucket Lists. NEW CRUISE SHIP OPTIONS For the most all-inclusive luxury experience, Regent Seven Seas Cruises recently launched the Seven Seas Explorer, dubbed the most luxurious ship ever built. Cruising on this breathlessly elegant and perfectly staffed ship, spaciously intimate for only 750 guests, includes roundtrip air, unlimited shore excursions, specialty restaurants, all beverages, fine wines, premium spirits, wifi, and gratuities. If large ocean cruising is more your thing, you may especially enjoy Royal Caribbean’s new Harmony of the Seas which debuted this spring. Now the largest ship at sea, there is no end to the entertainment, dining choices, activities, and choice of accommodations on the most innovative cruise ship ever built.
