elcome to November and our second annual "Gratitude" issue. Here are a few reasons why those of us around SW Lake Co. might take pause to express our thanks this month. • A few weeks after Harvey and Irma blew through Texas, Florida and the Caribbean, we were grateful for a glorious fall with week-after-week of wonderful weather. Around here we know a good thing when we see it, so lots of us enjoyed every moment outdoors as if it was stolen time. • In Hawthorn Woods adventurer Joel Schauer is grateful for surviving a tumble down Mount Everest, having scaled the tallest mountains on five continents and skied to both the North and South poles. Our editor, Stephen Neilson, recounts Schauer's harrowing experience in a story that starts on page 18. • November means the start of the annual holiday food frenzy. Alyssa Poggioli, a Lake Zurich wellness coach, offers four simple steps to ensure the groaning table of holiday goodies doesn't result in unnecessary weight gain this year. • Over at Roaring Table in Lake Zurich Beth May and her husband Lane Fearing are brewing up a storm. Roaring Table kicks off our newest feature, “Beer From Here”, that celebrates the best work of the many new breweries in our area. • Kelli Schulte—a local counselor to business execs, families and teens—offers her perspective on gratitude, emphasizing the need to take stock and focus on the positive. • Recently, I committed to working out a little harder (okay, a lot harder) with Sean Lee and his team at Restoration Fitness. So far I can report I'm getting stronger and improving my flexibility and stamina. I also recently took a float at Epic Float to enhance my well-being through a terrific relaxation experience. So take some time this month to focus on what's right. It's our hope you'll gather with family and friends, give thanks and enjoy the very best of the season.

A versatile beer that pairs well with a range of flavors. We enjoy it with our bacon flight, but it would make a nice counterpoint to fresh oysters on the half shell as well.

OVERALL:

A dark and contemplative beer that nevertheless is very approachable. While coffee and chocolate are prominent, this oat stout finishes dry and is very drinkable.

FINAL COMMENTS:

Roaring Table is a small batch brewery making a wide variety of beers by hand. Our taproom features a number of seating areas, including a live-edge ash bar, communal tables, high-tops, and a lounge with couches and a fireplace. over the next year with every penny to be spent on women and children in need in Lake County. Through a mix of social activities, fundraisers and volunteer opportunities, Caring Women’s Connection provides local women with fun and friendship while giving scholarships and grants to carefully vetted Lake County recipients. Regarding the $100,000 goal, I had the honor of calling last year’s grant recipients

and letting them know we were able to fully fund their request, and in a few cases, give them more than they asked for. To hear the joy and excitement in their voices was a heart-felt experience I will never forget, and I want to be able to make even more of

those calls in the coming year. Through the work of our incredible volunteers, we can provide vulnerable kids with court advocates, make sure shoes and boots are available to Lake County residents who need them, help abused women and children get out of desperate situations, and so much more. CWC HAS THREE MAJOR FUNDRAISERS A YEAR:

• The Love Fund, a live auction that was recently held at Kemper Lakes Golf Club. • A new fundraiser, “100 for $100,” in February. • A Spring Luncheon in April. In between these signature events there are monthly social outings and volunteer opportunities. Empty nesters, parents of school-aged children, business people searching to find meaningful community and connections through CWC are always welcome. CWC began in 1958 as a way to meet other women in Hawthorn Woods. Since that time, the organization as expanded to other communities and continually strives to help fund worthwhile not-for-profits. CLIMB A FALL FROM EVEREST, AND STRENGTH TO CARRY ON

Winds gusting up to 100 mph can wreak havoc with base camps.

18

SW Lake Lifestyle | November 2017

The view after falling off the summit ridge at 28975 feet, hanging upside down by a rope.

s I walked up the driveway to meet the Hawthorn Woods resident who has summited the highest mountain on five continents and skied to both the North and South poles, ticking off seven of the nine “Explorer’s Grand Slam” conquests (accomplished by only 58 people in the world), I wasn’t quite sure what to expect – but was hopeful that I wouldn’t have my hand crushed in a man-mountain-like vice-grip handshake. Quite the contrary. I was greeted by a courteous, welcoming, soft-spoken, gracious gentleman who warmly invited me in to hear stories of how he’s learned to trust his Guide, trust his rope, conquer his fears, and accept disappointment and failure as necessary for success. It’s not Joel Schauer’s physical presence that immediately grabs your attention, but his unmistakable inner strength and resolve. Schauer has leveraged his quiet, calm confidence into running a successful local business; raising a family with his wife of 31 years, Kathy; and helping to make a difference in the lives of others at home, at work, and on his travels. His passion for climbing the highest heights began during a trip to Uganda to help start schools and orphanages there, when an invitation to go climbing initially sparked his desire for further climbing adventures. After a year’s exhaustive training to scale Everest in 2014, an accident and loss of life in an icefall led to his expedition being cancelled. A disappointed Schauer planned to return to Everest in 2015, but called off his

Trust your team; trust your rope.

trip when his mother became gravely ill. That year, an earthquake triggered the fall of a huge chunk of ice into the base camp killing nineteen people, several of whom were in the very team Joel would have been with had he gone. Schauer remembers, “Except for my Mom’s illness, I would have been in that base camp. I remember Mom asking me before she passed if I would return to Everest; when I said yes, she replied, ‘I’ll see you there.’” While justifiably proud of his exploratory achievements, Schauer seems even more proud when mentioning his daughter Jen, explaining how she is setting aside a successful consulting career in Seattle to go to graduate school with a goal to join a nonprofit for abused and orphan children. Asked what he considers the biggest risk he’s taken in his life, Schauer replied, “Getting married; having a family; raising our kids. A majority of marriages end in divorce these days… kids don’t always turn out to be who you wish they would be.” He’s learned to surround himself with people who are positive and have a sense of purpose: “I always yearned to be on a great team… and now it’s my privilege and opportunity and challenge to create that, as a family man, a husband, and a business owner.” When the world turns upside down, as Schauer’s did (literally) while climbing down from the summit of Everest CONTINUED >

THE CLIMB (CON TI N UED)

where wind gusts reach 100 mph (it’s so high it’s up in the jet stream), his faith-based resolve and inner calm were key to turning potential tragedy into triumph. “It’s tough for me to admit that in 2016 I fell off the summit ridge, and at twenty-eight thousand nine hundred seventy five feet was hanging upside down looking outward over the Khumbu Valley. A completely new perspective of reality. My worst fear was just realized. There was no one to help me, as my Sherpa had continued down and other climbers continued up. My reaction: no fear, no emotion, only an internal peace and a realization that I was made Transcendently ascendant.

for exactly this moment and for this trial. My mental response was to consider if my carabiner would hold to the rope, and the rope to the summit ridge. My physical response was after several seconds I swung myself outwards, and dug my crampons into the rock and ice, obtaining enough leverage and purchase to right myself. Once uprighted and without another thought about what just occurred, I continued down to Camp 4.” Schauer’s wife Kathy recently climbed her own metaphorical mountain, conquering that widely-considered #1 fear many people share (that of public speaking) to join her husband in a presentation at an Athletes in Action event, sharing her personal perspective on being “the wife of an adventurous, risk-taking, mountaineering man.” As she retells: “The biggest part of it is that it can be an emotional roller coaster. Meeting extraordinary people from all walks of life, Joel’s challenging himself, seeing all of God’s creation all over the world, is wonderful. But there’s always the ‘what if’… what if there’s another avalanche… or he gets frostbite, loses fingers or toes or his nose… God tells us not to get anxious. Ultimately when he’s gone on a trip, I’m trusting God that he’ll come back to me.” Completing the last two “Explorer’s Grand Slam” climbs are on Schauer’s bucket list, and I’m pleased to add that interviewing him again as soon as possible after that achievement is now on my own bucket list. Joel Schauer has already planned his climb of Aconcagua, the tallest mountain in the southern and western hemispheres, for early in 2018. He can be reached for inquiries regarding speaking opportunities by email at joels@fairchildind.com.

F L O AT I N G A WAY ON A DREAM ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY MICHAEL BEIGHTOL

I

t was peaceful walking in the front door, leaving behind the traffic, noise and stress of a busy Rand Road. That’s all part of the plan, according to Jennifer Wyton,

owner of Epic Float in Lake Zurich, an innovative float therapy salon that opened earlier this year. The next impression was how clean it is. Spotless. Considering how float therapy works, that’s a very good thing. As a first time customer, Jennifer welcomed me at the front counter and shared a little of what I should expect from my first ever float; relaxation, calmness, rejuvenation and solitude. After signing a simple waiver, Jennifer showed me the floatation space. There was a comfortable changing area, a well-appointed shower and the floatation pool itself, bathed in soft blue light and warm, gin-clear water softly gurgling through a sophisticated filtration system. Floatation therapy has been around for years and is gaining in popularity, with Epic Float being the first-of-its-kind facility in SW Lake County. The basics are simple: users float in a shallow pool of warm water in a completely private, sound-and-light proof room. The water is combined with 1500 pounds of medical grade Epsom salts to create a water that is dense, allowing for incredible buoyancy. After a quick shower I carefully entered the pool. Soothing New Age music played softly. The water and air were warm and comfortable. My head rested on a small, dense foam ring to give my neck a little extra support. When I extended my arms I could touch the sides of the pool. On the left side there was a light switch. When the music slowly tapered off I tapped the switch and the lights went out.

Relax While We Do the Rest Cara Mia MedSpa is dedicated to helping our patients achieve their cosmetic goals by offering a variety of rejuvenating and anti-aging aesthetic treatments.

The filtration system was stilled. The only sound was the quiet lapping of water against the sides of the pool when I moved. I floated away, imagining that this was what total weightlessness was like. I heard the sound of my own heartbeat. I practiced diaphragmatic breathing. My eyes were closed. Or were they? There was total blackness. Floating took all the stress out of my creaky back and always stiff neck. Did I doze? Probably not since it seemed like I was thinking of everything and anything, but at a relaxed, non-pressured pace. It was very peaceful, warm and calm. After a while I heard the faint sounds of gurgling water. Then there was the slightest sound of strings, then music, gaining ever so slightly in volume. The music picked up and that was the signal that my hour of floatation was ending. I couldn’t tell you if it was actually 60 minutes or 6 hours. I had been totally transported away to a deep sense of wellbeing. After a thorough shower to rinse off the salt water I dressed quietly, feeling very relaxed and refreshed. I stopped briefly in a room filled with high quality personal care products to comb my hair and stepped out into the front room to be greeted by Jennifer who offered a cold bottle of fresh water. Driving home I was flooded with thoughts about what I had just experienced and deduced that I had reached a meditative state. While I don’t think I actually fell asleep, afterwards it felt like I had just had the

STEP ONE: Honor your hunger and fullness

scales. Hunger scale: I recommend eating

when you are around a level 3 on a scale of 1-to10 (1=noticing hunger, 10=starving). When you wait until you are ravenous you are guaranteed to overeat. Fullness scale: eat until you are a 7 (1=starving, 10=stuffed). You are looking to be satiated, nourished and energized.

2

STEP TWO: Water is a weapon. Get a minimum

of half your body weight in ounces of water per

day. Water gives you energy, helps digestion, decreases sugar cravings and hydrates your skin and joints. It’s also crucial as the weather gets colder. Be disciplined with 8-10oz before a meal, after a meal and in between alcoholic beverages. Warning: it takes about 72 hours for your body to get accustomed to being adequately hydrated until it knows what to do with it, so sit tight and persevere.
