Make a Statement!
September 2026 PUBLISHER
There's something powerful about walking into a room and immediately noticing style that isn't trying to blend in. Maybe it's the bold jacket, the perfectly tailored suit, a pair of vintage boots, or a vibrant lipstick. Maybe it's a home with an unexpected front door color or a living room that feels effortlessly elegant because it reflects the people who live there instead of the latest trend. The best style always makes a statement. Not because it's loud, but because it's authentic. This month, we're celebrating style in all its forms, from fashion and beauty to architecture, interior design, and the spaces we create for the people we love. While trends come and go, true style has never been about following the crowd. It's about having the confidence to express who you are. I love seeing that confidence throughout our community. It's the local boutique owner who helps someone discover the outfit that makes them feel unstoppable. The interior designer who transforms a house into a reflection of a family's personality. The craftsman who believes every detail matters. The artist who sees color where others see a blank canvas. They all have one thing in common: they're creating something memorable. And isn't that what we're all trying to do? Every day, we make choices that tell our story. The way we dress for an important meeting. The way we welcome guests into our home. The way we present our business. Even the way we care for ourselves sends a message before we ever say a word. What statement are you making? I hope this issue inspires you to think beyond what's fashionable and instead embrace what feels true to you. Wear the color you've always been afraid to try. Add the piece of art that makes you smile every time you walk by. Refresh a room. Reinvent a look. Support the local businesses that help bring your vision to life. After all, style isn't about impressing other people. It's about creating a life that feels uniquely your own. Here's to making a statement that is unmistakably yours.

Call it the One-Piece Rule: one of this fall's most popular fashion trends, and also the smartest way to get dressed while somehow still being the simplest. Instead of piecing together five brand-new looks from scratch, real style now hinges on a single, deliberate anchor—one bold piece, worn with confidence, everything else kept quiet around it. It plays out beautifully across a full week in the life of a young professional. Monday morning starts strong. A tailored navy suit—peplum jacket and matching trouser cinched at the waist with a slim gold belt—sets the tone for a power meeting: structured, composed, and unmistakably in charge. The peplum hem does the talking here, so everything else underneath stays clean, quiet, and confident. By the time the big pitch rolls around later in the week, the whole mood shifts entirely. A burgundy leather peplum jacket takes over the room, styled down with a chocolate faux-leather miniskirt for easy, grounded contrast underneath. It's the boldest silhouette of the whole week, finished with a rich chocolate suede bootie for warmth, and proof that conviction, not just polish, is what actually gets a big idea across the table. WEDNESDAYFRIDAY Casual Friday leans into elevated denim: barrel-leg jeans, prized for their twisting front seam, paired with a golden silk blouse, leopard shoes, and a black belt with tiny gold studs. The rest stays deliberately simple, letting that one seam detail carry the whole look effortlessly through the day. After-work drinks call for shine. A crystal-embellished sheer shirt, oversized and cut like a starlit night sky, layers effortlessly over a soft, ruched mesh skirt for full monochrome polish— proof the rule works just as well once the sun finally goes down. Weekend, off-duty: a plush faux-fur jacket, worn loose and easy over a simple navy camisole and classic indigo denim. Texture becomes the statement here, no matter the season, closing out the whole week exactly where it began—one bold piece, quietly doing all the work.

MEET THE STYLIST
This Page: Stylist: Roxanne Carne
Stylist Roxanne Carne Roxanne Carne didn't set out to become a stylist so much as a translator, turning what a woman wants to feel into something she can actually wear. Hollywood-trained and based in North Dallas, Roxanne founded Roxanne Carne Personal Stylist in 2013 on a simple belief: style isn't vanity; it's strategy. She works across every layer of a client's life—closet, color, confidence, career—helping women walk into a room already looking like the answer. Today, she serves her fifth year on the Fashion Group International board as regional director, following four years on the AICI Chicago Midwest Chapter board.
But ask what she loves most about the work, and she won't mention the credentials. She'll tell you it's watching a client's entire relationship with her wardrobe change, sometimes in a single session—from overwhelmed to effortless, from "I have nothing to wear" to getting dressed without a second thought. For this shoot, she kept it simple and classic: a soft grey turtleneck, sleek black trousers, one piece doing the work. Exactly the philosophy she teaches every day. Roxannecarne.com

Nonprofit of the Month The TWU Career Boutique: An Investment in Student Success Imagine stepping into your dream job interview knowing that you look like a million bucks without having spent a single dime getting there. That’s the reality for students at Texas Woman’s University (TWU), where becoming interview ready goes beyond basic resume advice. At the TWU Career Boutique, housed in the Career Connections Center, students aren’t just handed a rack of suits to sort through; they are given a personalized VIP styling consultation designed to contribute to their professional identity and build undeniable confidence. Whether students are interviewing for competitive internships, attending career fairs, networking with employers, presenting at a research conference, or beginning their first full-time position, the TWU Career Boutique removes a major barrier to entry: the high cost of quality professional attire.
THE POWER OF COMMUNITY
Every suit, blazer, dress, pair of trousers, and pair of shoes tells a story of community support. The TWU Career Boutique is built entirely on generous donations from faculty, staff, alumni, local agencies, and community members who believe in investing in our future leaders. These gifts are transformed into meaningful opportunities, allowing students to focus less on financial stress and more on showcasing their talents, potential, and unique skills.

This vital initiative is made possible through dedicated collaboration across campus and beyond. These partnerships include the Jane Nelson Institute for Women’s Leadership Center, the Merrilee Alexander Kick College of Business & Entrepreneurship, as well as our corporate community partners, Enterprise Mobility and Dress for Success Dallas. Together, these partners reflect a shared commitment to preparing students for meaningful career opportunities while strengthening connections between the university and the surrounding community.
A TAILORED APPROACH
What sets the TWU Career Boutique apart is its personalized styling experience. Nicole A. Sonkur, Associate Director of Employer Relations and Office Operations, serves as the coordinator and stylist for the boutique. Drawing on her background in career development and personal styling, she creates an experience that extends far
beyond simply handing out professional clothing. Each student receives individualized support through oneon-one appointments designed to cultivate self-assurance while preparing for pivotal career milestones. Before arriving, students complete a brief intake questionnaire detailing clothing sizes, style, and color preferences, as well as the kind of event they are preparing to attend. Using this information, Nicole curates three complete outfit options prior to the student ever stepping into the boutique. During their appointment, students try on each look, receive personalized guidance, and select the ensemble that best reflects their personality, desired profession, and goals. Best of all, the chosen outfit is theirs to keep, instilling a renewed sense of confidence as they step into their future.
HOW YOU CAN INVEST IN STUDENT SUCCESS
Supporting the TWU Career Boutique means investing directly in student success and empowering the next generation. Community members can make an immediate impact by donating clean, modern business attire, including interview-appropriate suits, blazers, dress shirts, slacks, skirts, shoes, and professional accessories for both men and women. Monetary gifts also do much to sustain the TWU Career Boutique for future generations, ensuring that these resources remain available long term. Financial contributions can be made through the Career Connections Support Fund at www.Giving. TWU.edu. Simply select “Career Connections Center Support Fund” and designate your gift to the “Career Boutique.” To learn more about the Career Connections Center and TWU Career Boutique, visit the Career Connections Center website at www.CareerConnections.TWU.edu or contact the center at Careers@TWU.edu or 940-898-2950. Every donation helps a student step confidently toward a bright future.

Wear Colors That Truly
LOVE YOU A quick guide to finding flattering shades for life. KNOW YOUR UNDERTONE Your undertone doesn’t change with the seasons. Check your wrist veins: blue means cool, green means warm, and unclear may be neutral. Cool tones love jewel colors; warm tones glow in earthy, rich shades.
CONSIDER CONTRAST Do you have high contrast between your hair, skin, and eyes (like dark hair and light skin)? High contrast looks great in bold, clear colors. Low contrast (like blonde hair and fair skin)? Softer, blended tones often suit you best.
THE WHITE VS. CREAM TEST Hold a white and ivory shirt near your face. If white flatters, you're likely cool-toned. If ivory glows against your skin, you're likely warm-toned. This quick test reveals your undertone with ease.
BUILD AROUND YOUR “WOW” COLORS Once you identify a few colors that make you look and feel amazing, use those as the base of your palette. These are your power colors—build your wardrobe and makeup around them!
PRO TIP You don’t have to follow rules perfectly. Your color palette is a guide, not a limit. Mix, match, and most importantly— wear what makes you feel beautiful.

Fa l l D é c o r From Heirloom Pumpkins to Garden Roses, Natural Textures and Layering Create a Cozy Autumn Retreat ARTICLE BY JESSICA CRANDALL LAWRENCE PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAVANNA ROMANO

S EASON A L SE T U P S | HOME + D E SIGN
“And, all at once, summer collapsed into fall.” Oscar Wilde once penned these sentimental words that so aptly describe this late summer season. The beautiful surrender of nature that occurs in September will soon give way to deep fall colors and fascinating textures. From fallen pinecones to prickly straw bales, the outside world of the autumn months is a wonderland for avid decorators. Slowly plummeting
temperatures provide the perfect backdrop for cozy family gatherings. "Fall is the best season to slow down and gather,” says Brandi Bosserman, owner of Bosserhouse Blooms in Argyle. “This is the time of year I love to make cozy spaces for my loved ones.” Brandi has captured the hearts of flower lovers throughout Denton County with her Texas garden-inspired floral arrangements. Her decoupaged, custom pumpkins adorned with mini succulents are a fall staple. “We build designs with moss and dried flowers on top of our pumpkins,” Brandi explains. “We don’t carve them so they can last for months at a time.” When it comes to transitioning your home into the autumnal season, Brandi advises a mindset of gathering rather than decorating. Fall offers an abundance of rich textures and hues that can be collected from natural sources growing all around us. “Think collected, not decorated,” says Brandi. “Gather what nature gives you. Natural elements from your yard can make incredible additions to your centerpieces and porch décor.” Brandi recommends venturing outside and finding twigs and pinecones to set around flower arrangements and pumpkins. Large branches can also make a nice centerpiece and can be spray-painted to match your display. North Texas is home to a variety of beautiful garden variety flowers that can be bought or grown in the fall. Brandi recommends heirloom mums, dahlias, garden roses, celosia, and zinnias. Each of these flowers brings a different shape, hue, and texture to a floral arrangement. This fall, popular colors are transitioning away from bright reds and oranges and instead trending toward soft caramel, sage, plum, and burgundy. These can be layered together for event centerpieces or home accents. Paired with creamy white and deep green heirloom pumpkins, the result is an elegant look that transitions beautifully from early fall through Thanksgiving. “Layer your colors together,” Brandi explains. “These soft fall hues don't hurt your eyes when they're next to each other.” CONTINUED >

“This fall, popular colors are transitioning away from bright reds and oranges and instead trending toward soft caramel, sage, plum, and burgundy.”
Pumpkins are also veering away from the traditional round, orange gourds of the past. Heirloom pumpkins of varying shapes and sizes provide more visual interest. Brandi recommends Cinderella, Fairytale, Jarrahdale, and Casper varieties of pumpkins, all of which can be sourced locally. When creating a porch display or seasonal tablescape, Brandi recommends starting with a focal point, such as a statement vase filled with flowers or a large pumpkin, and then layering complementary pieces around it to create depth. "I like to work in odd numbers,” she remarks. “Groups of three to five flow well together." According to Brandi, some of the best places to showcase seasonal décor are the front porch, a kitchen island, and the fireplace, where natural elements can cultivate a warm autumn atmosphere. "Pumpkins around the fireplace are incredible," she says. "You can even put pumpkins on your bookshelves. Or tuck them into flower beds." AUTUMN DECORATING STYLE TIPS
• Layer in odd numbers. Group pumpkins and flowers in threes or fives for a naturally balanced look. Odd numbers are more pleasing to the eye. • Mix textures. Pair pumpkins with dried flowers, moss, pinecones, grasses, and branches. Don’t be afraid to experiment! • Think beyond orange. Sage, caramel, dusty plum, burgundy and white create a timeless palette. Layer these colors together for more depth. • Decorate where you gather. Dress up entryways, kitchen islands, and fireplaces for maximum effect. • Think collected, not decorated. Gather natural elements from your yard and let the autumn season inspire you this year.

Beauty starts inside. When we love ourselves, we care for ourselves. Inner Radiance Wellness and Aesthetics brings intention toward finding your own inner radiance.
Time To Shine
What does it mean to live a “good life”? Theologians, philosophers, and artists have chased this question for eons. Two foundational questions are “What do I want for my own life?” and “What impact do I want to have in the world?” In this new chapter of her life, Rachel McSee discerned that founding her Inner Radiance Wellness and Aesthetics boutique practice would provide a way for her to answer both questions, while enabling others to do the same. Rachel has been a practitioner and advocate for flourishing her whole life. In a previous issue, she described her long journey toward a focus on holistic health, not just scale numbers and dress sizes. Beyond her own well-being, she has also supported others’ thriving, whether by caring for family and friends or by training and mentoring her colleagues.

Another benefit, beyond the merely physical, is having someone focus so thoughtfully on us and our needs. Many of Rachel’s clients spend so much time caring for others that this personalized attention is a welcome change. Enter through the welcoming front doors. You are embraced by cool colors, quiet music, and soft surfaces. The beauty and comfort of the lobby signal your body and mind to relax, leaving aside, for the moment, all the concerns of your life. Together, you identify the next step. CONTINUED >
After a decades-long corporate career, Rachel turned her attention to owning a business in the health and wellness sector. She understood that external beauty and physical health directly correlate to the inner being. True “inner radiance” comes from loving ourselves, from which place we can care for and support others. Each of the modalities chosen for the spa are backed by clinical research and exceptional training, ensuring that clients receive the best care possible. Someone may come in because they’ve heard or seen information about a practice like CoolSculpting® and decide that’s what they want. Rachel begins by getting to know the individual and their personal wellness goals, and then they develop a plan together. Understanding and responding to each individual’s needs is why Rachel is so committed to the boutique experience. For example, CoolSculpting and HIEMT alone are great for reducing stubborn fat in “problem areas" but won't tighten the skin where weight loss has occurred. To address that concern, Rachel preferred to invest in an upgraded device that combines HIEMT with radio frequency. This newer device, in addition to RF Body Contouring, can simultaneously help melt fat and tighten and rejuvenate loose skin. S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/SWD E N TO N C O UN T Y

For some, it will be the dry seated sauna box with light and sound therapy. The wellness capsule (“sauna pod”) uses IR light and heat for detox, pain relief, and weight management, while keeping your head outside the pod. There’s no claustrophobia as you listen to your own playlist over the Bluetooth speakers. (Some participants even report falling asleep!) In addition to the familiar red light, treatments use the six other colors of LED light, each of which address different skin health needs. Upon meeting Rachel, you quickly recognize someone who cares deeply about you. She’s quick to refer out if she doesn’t offer what someone needs, which means that the other spa and salon businesses in the shopping center are not competitors but partners in service to the community. Inner Radiance’s offers a carefully curated selection of services, because Rachel is committed to being certified in all the modalities she offers, ensuring her expertise in recommending and guiding their use. The Skin Analyzer, which uses camera technology combined with AI to create a diagnostic report, is one example. The results of the report are then the topic of conversation for Rachel and her client. This also means that if your goals would be better addressed by a dermatologist or other clinician, she’s prepared to suggest a referral. Whether you are seeking a more toned body, tighter and clearer skin, more elasticity and fewer wrinkles, hair removal, or even hair growth stimulation, Inner Radiance has solutions to offer. True style comes from a place of inner confidence. When we feel good from the inside out, we carry ourselves with graceful assurance. This is what distinguishes it from costume. No matter the aesthetic,

style brings multiple components into a harmony. Whatever your personal brand or vibe, you hope to project it with confidence. If your outfit is immaculate, you want your self-care routine to match. In the same way you might FaceTime a friend to help you pick the perfect outfit, consider Rachel your friend who helps you pick the perfect treatments that enable you to project your unique sense of self. Maybe you are not even sure what you want or need, other than to take better care of yourself and feel healthier inside and out. Visit Rachel soon, because that’s what she wants for you also. Flooring is a major part of any home and living space. From children crawling around to a family game of Twister or a retiree using assistive walking devices, home flooring supports every step at home. Sometimes flooring obviously needs a change, such as after an appliance flood. Other times, flooring simply becomes outdated as colors and styles shift. Choosing flooring is a big decision, both because of how visible it is throughout the home and its pricing. Natalie Smith, a third-generation manager of Smitty’s Floor Covering in Denton, knows exactly how to help her clients find the right flooring.
“For some, it's all about the stylistic impact. Recently, Natalie is seeing a trend of fun, patterned carpet in surprising areas.”

Her line of questioning helps her find the perfect blend of affordability, durability, and style to ensure families get what they need for their home. “Do you have kids? Do you have animals? Is this going to be your forever house, or is this just the house that you're going to stay in for five years? With these answers, I can assess what is going to be their best option,” she explains. For most people, the primary deciding factor when choosing flooring is durability. For that, Natalie points to her favorite flooring. “If you install luxury vinyl plank flooring, depending on the grade of it, it should last 20 plus years,” says Natalie. In fact, luxury vinyl plank flooring is what she has in her own home. But durability isn’t always the primary deciding factor. For some, it's all about the stylistic impact. Recently, Natalie is seeing a trend of fun, patterned carpet in surprising areas. Children’s rooms are an obvious choice for these whimsical carpets. With pink, glittery carpets and dark, starry night floor coverings, kids can enjoy a space that reflects their personality. As a bonus,
these carpets are easy to maintain thanks to their stain-resistant and durable fibers. Kids aren’t the only ones who get to enjoy festive carpeting! Women with large dressing-room style closets are opting for glittery styles or leopard-print carpets that elevate the space and bring joy to what can be a utilitarian part of the day. Natalie’s favorite place to put a unique carpet? The staircase. “As soon as you walk in the door, there is usually a staircase that is the focal point. But you don't want Plain Jane carpet on it. You want something that will stand out and pop.” Whether choosing luxury vinyl planks or fun, patterned carpet, the nearly 70-yearold establishment, originally founded by Natalie’s grandfather, Mansell "Smitty" Smith, is ready to help your home exude comfort and style. Meet Natalie and her brother at Smitty's Floor Covering to discover your home’s perfect flooring. First Responders of the Month Denton County Emergency Services District No. 1 Provides More than Medical Care

Recently, Denton County Emergency Services District No. 1 went above and beyond for a local resident. Capital Joshua Esquivel recalls, “We were at the station when a community member walked in and asked if we could check her vital signs because she wasn't feeling well. As we do with any walk-in medical call, we notified Denton County Dispatch and began our assessment. During our conversation, she shared that she had been outside digging six flagpole holes along her driveway. After completing only half of the project, she became overheated and exhausted. “As we treated her with fluids and monitored her condition, she mentioned she had hoped to finish installing all six flagpoles before Independence Day as part of our nation's 250th anniversary celebration. The three of us looked at each other, and without saying much, we all had the same idea. “Once we were confident she was medically stable and feeling much better, we asked if we could help her finish what she'd started. We followed her home, dug the remaining holes, and helped her complete the project.
“What began as a routine walk-in medical call became an opportunity to simply serve someone in our community.” Hailey Skinner, firefighter and EMT, adds, “It wasn’t something we had to do; it was simply an opportunity to help someone who had already had a rough day. Serving our community means more than providing emergency medical care sometimes. It’s the small acts of kindness that leave the biggest impact.” Skinner was especially grateful that the resident took a moment to pause when feeling overheated. “Our patient did exactly what we hope people will do—she listened to her body and asked for help before her condition became more serious. Heat related illnesses can escalate quickly, especially during Texas summers. We hope this story reminds people to stay hydrated, take breaks, and never ignore symptoms like dizziness or fainting. We’re grateful she trusted us with her care, and we’re honored we could make her day just a little bit better by lending a helping hand after the medical emergency was over.”
