There is something special about food. It has a way of bringing people together, creating traditions and turning an ordinary day into something worth remembering. Some of our favorite memories happen around a table with family gathered for dinner, friends lingering over drinks or a spontaneous meal that turns into an evening we didn’t want to end. Living in the West Valley, we’re lucky to have no shortage of places to discover, from locally owned restaurants and neighborhood favorites to food trucks, markets, bakeries and makers who put their heart into what they create. In this issue, we’re celebrating the people, places and flavors that make our community’s food scene so special. Whether you’re looking for your next favorite restaurant, a new drink to try or simply a reason to gather with the people you love, we hope these pages inspire you to get out, explore and enjoy something delicious. After all, life is better when there’s good food, something worth raising a glass to and great company around the table. Here’s to eating well, gathering often and savoring the moments in between.

letter from the PUBLISHER Some of my favorite memories have happened in our kitchen. With four daughters, a loving husband and a house that rarely feels quiet, there has always been something happening around the dinner table. Cooking together has given us more than just a meal it has given us time to slow down, laugh, talk about our days and simply be together. Over the years, our kitchen has seen everything from carefully planned family dinners to last minute meals, holiday baking and recipes that have become traditions of their own. There is something about preparing food together that makes even the simplest meal feel a little more special. As a family, we’ve learned that the best part of gathering around a table isn’t always what’s on the plate. It’s the people sitting beside you, the conversations that happen between bites and the memories that stay with you long after the dishes are done. This month, we’re celebrating the food and drinks that bring our community together. I hope these pages inspire you to try something new, revisit an old favorite or, most importantly, gather around the table with the people you love. Here’s to full plates, happy kitchens and the people who make every meal worth sharing.

The Art of Gathering Graze Craze Brings Beautiful Boards and Effortless Entertaining to Surprise Something about a beautifully arranged board immediately makes people want to gather around it. Maybe it is the freedom to try a little of everything, the conversations that happen while reaching for another piece of cheese, or the way an ordinary evening suddenly feels like an occasion. That easy, social style of entertaining is at the heart of Graze Craze, a new locally owned and owner-run charcuterie boutique in Surprise. Owned and operated by Tonja Curtis, Graze Craze celebrated its grand opening in June 2026, bringing a fresh approach to gathering to the West Valley. For Curtis, the concept is about more than arranging meats and cheeses. It is about hospitality, presentation, and creating something that naturally brings people together. Charcuterie has certainly had its moment in recent years, but its appeal is easy to understand. There are no formal courses or rules. Everyone can reach in, discover a new favorite, and build the perfect bite. It works just as easily for a quiet date night as it does in the middle of a bustling celebration. At Graze Craze, that experience begins with boards handcrafted from a mix of thoughtfully selected meats, cheeses, fresh fruits and vegetables, sweets and accompaniments. House-made dips and jams bring in unexpected flavors, while

different combinations mean no two grazing experiences have to feel exactly alike. And while the traditional meat-and-cheese combination remains a favorite, grazing has become much more versatile. Classic, vegetarian, keto, and gluten-conscious selections allow guests to find something that works for their table, while individual options turn the experience into something you do not necessarily have to share. Although sharing is admittedly half the fun. That flexibility is also what makes a grazing board fit into so many moments. It can show up for girls’ night with a bottle of wine, become dinner when nobody feels like cooking, or make an easy gift that feels far more personal than something pulled from a shelf. For larger celebrations, the same idea can expand into full grazing tables and catering for birthdays, corporate events, weddings,
showers and holiday parties. The presentation becomes part of the celebration itself, giving guests something beautiful to discover while encouraging them to move around, mingle and stay awhile. Pickup, delivery and online ordering also bring a little practicality to all that prettiness. Anyone who has hosted a party knows that making things look effortless usually takes a lot of behind-the-scenes work. For Curtis, however, perhaps the most meaningful part of opening Graze Craze is doing it here in Surprise. As the community continues to grow, locally owned businesses have an opportunity to create the places and experiences that become part of how residents celebrate everyday life. Graze Craze is Curtis’ way of adding something delicious to that mix, one board, gathering and conversation at a time. Because sometimes a memorable night does not need an elaborate plan. It just needs good food, favorite people, and something in the middle of the table everyone can share.

Today, exploring global cuisine doesn’t require a reservation in Scottsdale, a drive across the Valley or, thankfully, a passport. Right here in Surprise, you can start the day dreaming of Paris, discover the fragrant spices of India by lunch, gather around an Italian table for dinner and end the evening with the bold flavors of Mexico all within a few miles of home. And that may be one of the most exciting parts of our city’s evolving food scene. Behind every bowl of pho, plate of pierogi, freshly baked naan or handmade pasta is a culinary tradition that reaches far beyond Arizona. The power of early detection in breast cancer care One in eight U.S. women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Today, more of them are surviving it than ever — nearly 4.3 million U.S. women are living with a history of breast cancer. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona is spotlighting the science and specialists behind that progress.
A team of experts, working as one As part of City of Hope, one of the nationʼs largest and most advanced cancer organizations, City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona brings together a team of specialists to develop a coordinated care plan tailored to each patient and the specific characteristics of their cancer. That may include genomic testing, targeted drug therapies, hormone-blocking treatments and new surgical techniques. Additionally, for some patients, active clinical trials are bringing tomorrowʼs treatments to patients today. “The most optimal care is highly individualized, combining an understanding of unique
tumor biology and scientific innovation with a deep commitment to each patientʼs quality of life,” said Hope S. Rugo, M.D., Director of City of Hopeʼs Womenʼs Cancers Programs and Division Chief of Breast Medical Oncology. City of Hope also helps patients with specialized breast cancer survivorship programs, including support such as recurrence monitoring, preserving fertility and emotional wellness.
Know the facts, take action In Arizona, an estimated 7,090 women will be diagnosed this year. Breast cancer is also increasingly diagnosed in younger women under the age of 50. That trend is an important reminder that breast cancer risk isnʼt defined by age alone. While age remains one risk factor, every woman has a unique risk profile. Family history, inherited genetic mutations and lifestyle factors can all play a role. Understanding those risks can help women and their doctors make more informed decisions about when and how often to screen.

City of Hope encourages every woman, at any age, to discuss concerns with their doctor. “No one knows your body better than you do,” said Sagun Shrestha, M.D., Chief of Medical Oncology, City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona. “If something feels different, donʼt wait and donʼt talk yourself out of it — talk to your doctor. Thatʼs how we catch cancer early and offer the most treatment options.”

Throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month, physicians at City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona will wear pink lab coats. It honors people affected by breast cancer and acknowledges the advances of today and those on the horizon — a future filled with hope.

There is something wonderfully uncomplicated about finding a really good cup of coffee. Maybe it is the first sip before the rest of the house wakes up, an iced coffee grabbed on the way somewhere, or the cup you linger over while talking with a friend much longer than
“Great coffee should feel approachable, memorable and meant to be shared.” planned. For Samuel and Savannah Sullivan, those everyday coffee moments were worth paying a little more attention to. That idea eventually became Crest Coffee Roasters, a locally owned West Valley roastery built around specialty coffee, community and the belief that what is in your cup should have a story behind it. For the husband-and-wife team, Crest started with a shared appreciation for great coffee and grew into something much bigger. They wanted to create coffee that was fresh, thoughtfully made and approachable, without turning ordering a cup into something that required its own vocabulary lesson. While Samuel and Savannah take coffee seriously, the experience surrounding it does not have to be. That balance has become part of Crest’s personality. The company operates from a mobile coffee trailer rather than a traditional café, popping up around the West Valley at farmers markets, community gatherings and church events.
Regulars stop by for their favorite espresso drink. Someone new wanders over after spotting the trailer. Conversations happen while drinks are being made, recommendations are exchanged and familiar faces start feeling like friends. Behind that easygoing experience, however, is plenty of craftsmanship. Crest works exclusively with specialty-grade Arabica beans sourced from coffee-growing regions around the world, paying attention to both flavor and the farming practices behind each origin. The beans are roasted in small batches, allowing each coffee to develop its own character. The results can taste surprisingly different. One coffee might be smooth and slightly sweet with notes of brown sugar and citrus, while another leans richer with chocolate and black cherry. For someone accustomed to thinking of coffee as simply “coffee,” discovering those differences can be part of the fun. CONTINUED > OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / S UR P R I S E

Crest wants people to notice what they like, experiment with how they brew it and stop worrying about whether they are doing coffee the “right” way. Samuel and Savannah enjoy sharing what they have learned about roast profiles, brewing methods and the journey coffee takes before reaching a mug. Education has naturally become part of what they do, but without the formality sometimes associated with specialty coffee. You do not have to know every growing region or own an elaborate home setup to appreciate a better cup. For Samuel and Savannah, it is less about turning everyone into a coffee expert and more about helping people discover what they genuinely enjoy. “Great coffee shouldn’t feel intimidating,” is a philosophy that runs through the Crest experience. It should be something people can explore, ask questions about and ultimately enjoy however they like it best. And Crest is still finding new ways to play with what coffee can be. One of its newest additions takes the roastery beyond the familiar bag of beans or drink handed through the trailer window. Crest recently introduced canned Nitro Cold Brew, giving customers another way to take their coffee with them. Nitrogen gives cold brew its creamy texture and smooth finish, making it an especially fitting Arizona coffee. It is the kind of drink that makes sense when temperatures are climbing and a steaming mug sounds considerably less appealing than something cold. The cans also represent an interesting next chapter for a business built around making specialty coffee more accessible. A Crest coffee can now come along for a morning commute, weekend road trip, afternoon at the lake or whatever else an Arizona day has planned. Still, the newest product is only one small part of the Crest story. At its center are Samuel and Savannah, two people who have built their business around the things that matter to them: their faith, their family, serving

“Behind every cup is a story of craftsmanship, community and people who believe great coffee is always worth slowing down for.” others well and creating genuine connections within their community. For the couple, coffee has always been about more than what ends up in the cup. “It’s about creating an experience that extends far beyond coffee itself,” a sentiment reflected in everything from the way beans are selected to the conversations happening outside the trailer. That community piece carries particular meaning in the West Valley, where cities like Surprise continue to grow. Yet it is often the small, locally owned places that give a community its personality. They are the businesses where someone remembers your order. Where you recognize
the owners behind the counter. Where stopping for coffee turns into catching up with someone you know. Crest has found its place within that rhythm. There is plenty happening behind every cup, from farmers cultivating coffee thousands of miles away to careful sourcing, small-batch roasting and dialing in the final drink. But when that coffee finally reaches the person waiting at the trailer window, the experience feels refreshingly simple. Good coffee. Good people. A few minutes to enjoy both. And really, that might be the best way to drink it.

Meet Us on the Patio C O O L E R E V E N I N G S, G O O D CO MPA NY A ND S O ME O F S U RPRIS E’S FAVO RITE PL AC ES TO DINE A L F RES CO. There’s something about October in Arizona that feels like an invitation to head outside. After months of escaping the summer heat, the evenings begin to cool, the sunsets arrive a little earlier and patio season finally makes its much-anticipated return. And in Surprise, there’s no shortage of places to pull up a chair. Whether it’s sharing tapas as the sun goes down, lingering over a glass of wine beneath the stars, sipping a margarita surrounded by greenery or bringing your four-legged best friend along for the evening, dining outdoors turns an ordinary meal into an experience. It’s less about rushing through dinner and more about slowing down, ordering another round and enjoying the kind of weather we’ve been waiting all summer for. This fall, we’re taking dinner and drinks outside at six Surprise destinations, each with its own take on patio season. Quench Taps & Tapas | Tapas & Toasts at Sunset 14010 N. Litchfield Rd., Suite 212, Surprise, AZ 85379 Small plates were made for sharing, and Quench Taps & Tapas gives patio night a sophisticated twist. The chef-owned scratch kitchen pairs its rotating selection of shareable plates with craft cocktails and an extensive wine selection. Gather a few friends, order several dishes for the table and raise a glass as another Arizona sunset paints the sky. The Toast Craft Kitchen & Cocktails | Sips & Bites Al Fresco 17058 W. Bell Rd., Suite 104, Surprise, AZ 85374 The Toast offers an easygoing neighborhood setting for turning lunch, dinner or cocktails into an outdoor affair. With contemporary cuisine, Mediterranean influences, shareable appetizers and handcrafted drinks, its patio is an inviting spot to settle in when cooler weather arrives. Order something for the table, find a favorite cocktail and enjoy the simple pleasure of dining outside. Rio Mirage Café | Margaritas in the Garden 13863 W. Bell Rd., Surprise, AZ 85379 Few things pair with an Arizona evening quite like Mexican food and a margarita. Rio Mirage brings plenty of color and personality to patio season with a festive atmosphere, classic Mexican favorites and a full bar known for its margaritas. From fajitas and enchiladas to chips, salsa and something icy to sip, this is patio dining with a little fiesta built in.
Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant | Wine Under the Arizona Stars 16470 W. Alexandria Way, Surprise, AZ 85388 For an elevated evening outdoors, Cooper’s Hawk brings together wine and dining in one polished experience. Start with a tasting, choose a bottle to share and head to the patio for dinner beneath the evening sky. With an extensive wine program, shareable plates and contemporary American cuisine, it’s an easy choice for date night, celebrations or a leisurely evening with friends. Osteria Mia | Pasta & Prosecco Al Fresco 16853 N. 145th Ave., Suite 155, Surprise, AZ 85374 There’s something inherently romantic about Italian food enjoyed outdoors. Osteria Mia sets the table with the flavors of an Italian neighborhood gathering place—from burrata and arancini to handmade-style pastas, pizza and Italian-inspired cocktails. Add a glass of wine or Prosecco, good conversation and an Arizona evening, and you have all the ingredients for a relaxed night spent lingering over the table. O.H.S.O. Brewery | Pups Welcome on the Patio 13434 N. Prasada Pkwy., Surprise, AZ 85388 Patio season is even better when your best friend can come along. O.H.S.O. brings its famously social brewery atmosphere to Surprise with craft beer, casual bites and an outdoor experience that welcomes four-legged guests. Grab a pint, order something to share and settle in with your pup for a laid-back afternoon or evening outdoors.
Pull Up a Chair Arizona patio season never seems to last quite long enough, which makes these cooler days and evenings worth savoring. Meet a friend for happy hour, turn dinner into date night, bring the whole crew or the dog, and stay awhile. Because sometimes the best table in the restaurant isn’t inside at all.
