LIFESTYLE LETTER

We are Thankful for You! There is something special about the people who make a place feel like home. As we move into November and the season of Thanksgiving, we find ourselves reflecting on what we are most grateful for, and at the top of that list is this incredible Surprise community. Every month, we have the privilege of sharing the people, businesses, organizations and stories that make our city what it is. We meet neighbors who give their time to help others, business owners who pour their hearts into what they do, families creating traditions together and community leaders working to make Surprise an even better place to call home. Those are the stories that remind us why we love doing what we do. Surprise continues to grow and change, welcoming new businesses, new neighborhoods and new faces along the way. Yet through that growth, there remains a strong sense of community. It can be found in the local businesses that know their customers by name, the organizations stepping up when someone needs help, the packed stands at a Friday night game and the families who continue to show up for one another. This Thankful Issue is our opportunity to celebrate all of it. We are incredibly grateful to the local businesses and partners who make this magazine possible, the individuals who trust us to tell their stories and, most importantly, you, our readers. Thank you for welcoming Surprise City Lifestyle into your homes each month and for continuing to support the people and places within these pages. This Thanksgiving, we hope you find time to gather around the table, enjoy the people you love, and appreciate the community we are fortunate to share. From our family at Surprise City Lifestyle to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

W HE R E MU S IC OP E N S NE W DOOR S A FAMILY VISION CREATING CONNECTION, BELONGING AND OPPORTUNITY THROUGH MUSIC.

ARTICLE BY KYLIE STRAWN-BADGER PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONES N BONES

M UST SE E | ARTS + C ULT U RE

What began with a few teenagers, worship music, and an open backyard has grown into something Megan and Ken Gerber never quite planned but perhaps were always meant to create. Tones N Bones is a nonprofit centered around music, faith, and community, providing a place where young people can gather, musicians can develop their talents, and families can experience live music together. But before there was a venue, there was simply the Gerber family opening their home. Their children, Jack and Skyla, were involved in a youth group, and Jack and another teenage drummer began providing worship music. Soon, the

backyard became a gathering place. A back-to-school carnival brought even more people together, and connections with Christian musicians led to small acoustic concerts at their home. “We just kept opening the door,” Megan says. “Eventually, I felt that we were being called to open a bigger one.” Even the name Tones N Bones is deeply connected to their family. Jack was diagnosed with autism at age three and began speaking at five. From an early age, he developed a fascination with dinosaurs and paleontology, collecting fossils and dreaming of someday having a place where he could share that passion with other children. He also developed a love and talent for music. When Megan and Ken began imagining the venue, the two worlds came together: “Tones” represented music, while “Bones” represented Jack’s fossils. “Tones N Bones wasn’t just a clever name,” Megan says. “It told our family’s story.” That family story has since grown into a community mission. Tones N Bones offers young musicians opportunities to perform and develop their talents while also hosting established Christian artists, worship events and other ministries. The venue has welcomed artists including Disciple, Spoken and We Are Vessel, along with local musicians. One memorable event featured 14 local bands performing in a single day. “Our mission is to create a place where people, especially young people, can come together, build relationships, discover and develop their talents, and find a sense of belonging,” Megan says. That sense of belonging is ultimately what keeps Megan and Ken moving forward. Megan remembers one worship night when another ministry was using the venue at no cost. At the time, she and Ken had been discussing the financial challenges of operating Tones N Bones while continuing to give the space to organizations that needed it.

During the event, Megan noticed a young man who had arrived appearing distant and down. Later, she saw him standing with his head lowered and hands raised while his friends surrounded him. “I looked at Ken with tears in my eyes and said, ‘He needed this. This is why we’re doing it.’” They never learned what he was going through. They simply knew Tones N Bones had provided a place for whatever he needed in that moment. As the organization has grown, so has the community surrounding it. Volunteers, musicians, donors, ministries and friends have contributed everything from equipment and expertise to countless hours of their time. This year, Megan is especially thankful to see Tones N Bones beginning to mature, with stronger systems behind the scenes and growing relationships with local musicians. “There is a tremendous amount of talent in our community,” she says, “and we’re looking forward to creating more opportunities to bring those artists and audiences together.” Most of all, the Gerbers remain grateful that something so meaningful grew from something so simple. “We started by opening our home. Then we opened a venue,” Megan says. “Now we just want to keep opening doors for people.”

BUILDING BETTER BASEBALL

From professional baseball to mentoring youth, Nik Lubisich and Jace Fr y give back through baseball. ARTICLE BY KYLIE STRAWN-BADGER PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANIELLE MUCCILLO PHOTOGRAPHY

O UR TOWN | SP O RTS + RE CRE AT ION

For Nik Lubisich and Jace Fry, baseball has given them far more than a career. It has brought relationships, opportunities, lessons in adversity and, ultimately, a chance to give those experiences back to the next generation. Today, that purpose comes to life at South West Athletic Center in Surprise, where they are helping young athletes

“I love the game. I love relationships and connecting with people. That’s really my why.” - Nik Lubisich develop their skills, understand the game, and learn lessons that extend beyond the baseball field. Drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2001, Nik spent seven years in professional baseball before an arm injury ended his playing career. “I spent two years trying to get back to where I was and ultimately the body wouldn’t cooperate,” Nik says. “So my career ended. It was crushing.” Rather than leave baseball behind, Nik became a sports agent while continuing to coach young players. By day, he trained kids; by night, he built his agency. That eventually grew into North West Sports Management Group, which now represents 48 professional baseball clients, along with Northwest Futures Baseball Academy. “I love coaching, I really do,” Nik says. “I love the game. I love relationships and connecting with people. That’s really my why.”

When Nik brought North West Athletic Center to Arizona for a tournament in 2017, he saw an opportunity, particularly in the West Valley. “I have seen dads hold practices in parking lots and in parks to make sure their kids have a place to practice,” he says. “People are real, authentic, no pretentiousness. I love the people of the West Valley.” That vision eventually led to South West Athletic Center, founded in Surprise in 2024. For Nik, however, building the right program meant surrounding young athletes with the right people. One of the most important was Jace. Nik first met Jace when he was 17 and later represented him throughout his professional career. Jace went on to pitch in the Major Leagues for the Chicago White Sox from 2017 to 2021. Today, he serves as director of pitching and player development at South West Athletic Center and Southwest Futures. CONTINUED >

“We really have a deep, profound respect and love for one another,” Nik says. “There’s a loyalty that exists here that’s lifelong.” For Jace, coaching is an opportunity to take what professional baseball taught him and pass it along to young athletes. “I want to offer young athletes and their parents what is missing from traditional baseball training,” Jace says. “I want to offer someone who can slow the game down, really break down whether it’s mechanics or situational, teaching them the IQ of baseball.” That means going beyond throwing harder or winning the next game. Jace wants athletes to understand the details of baseball while learning how to respond when things do not go according to plan. He understands that lesson personally. “One day I am pitching, next day your elbow’s blown out,” Jace says. “I didn’t dwell on it. I said, ‘I have 12 months of opportunity to get better for when I come back.’ You can always rewrite the plan or have a different route to get to the same end goal.” Nik carries a similar philosophy into his coaching. “Show up every day. Just commit. Just finish what you start,” he says. “Run the race as best you can, finish it. To me, that’s a life lesson that’ll take forever.” Their approach is already making an impact. One athlete progressed from the bottom of the roster to starting every game and hitting fourth or fifth. Another young pitcher increased his velocity from 45 mph to 70 mph. For Nik and Jace, however, success is about more than creating better baseball players. It is about

helping young people learn resilience, discipline and commitment while building a community of families who believe in the process. Jace says he is especially thankful for “the help from the dads, the ones that want to be involved and help coach.” Nik shares that gratitude. “I am thankful for parents that understand that we’re trying really hard to find the pursuit of perfection,” he says. “We’re in the pursuit of it, but we’re not perfect.” He is also particularly grateful for the person helping him build it.

“I’m thankful for Jace. For making this his home,” Nik says. “This guy would work eight days a week if there were eight.” What began as two professional baseball journeys has become an opportunity to invest in the young players coming behind them. Through South West Athletic Center, Nik and Jace are passing along the knowledge baseball gave them while teaching the next generation about hard work, adversity, and finishing what they start. For both, it is a chance to give back to the game and the community that continues to give them so much.

TURKEY POT PIE Ingredients:

TURKEY POT PIE A comforting family favorite that transforms Thanksgiving leftovers into a warm, savory meal everyone loves.

For our family, Thanksgiving leftovers are almost as anticipated as the big meal itself. This homemade turkey pot pie has become a favorite way to transform leftover turkey into something warm, comforting and completely new. Filled with tender turkey, vegetables and creamy goodness, it’s a tradition everyone looks forward to.

22

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

• 2 pie crusts (store bought or homemade) chilled (our recipes makes 2 crusts, needed for this recipe; one for the top, and one for the bottom) • 1 pound cooked Turkey • 1/3 cup butter • 1/2 cup celery, sliced • 1/3 cup onion, chopped • 1/3 cup all purpose flour • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground pepper • 1/4 teaspoon fresh thyme • 1/4 teaspoon celery seed • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon paste or more to taste (or substitute 1 bouillon cube) • 1 cup milk • 1 3/4 cup chicken broth • 8 ounces frozen veggies, (mix of carrots, peas, green beans, and corn) • 1 egg • 1 tbsp milk

Directions: 1. Chicken Pot Pie Filling: Add onions, celery and butter to the saucepan and cook for a few minutes, until soft and translucent. Stir in the flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, bullion paste and celery seed. Slowly stir in the chicken broth and milk. Simmer over medium-low heat until thick. 2. Add chopped turkey and frozen vegetables. Taste and season with more salt, pepper, bouillon or garlic powder if needed. Allow mixture to cool (so that's it's not hot when poured into the pie crust). 3. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. 4. Roll out bottom pie crust: Remove one pie dough from the fridge and place on lightly floured counter. Use a rolling pin to roll dough into a large circle, about 12 inches in diameter. Place in 9 inch pie pan. 5. Assemble: Add turkey pot pie filling. Roll out second pie crust and place over the top of the filling. Seal edges of the two crusts together and crimp them, if desired. Use a sharp knife to make a small slit in the top pie crust to allow steam to escape. 6. Egg wash: Whisk 1 egg with 1 tablespoon milk and brush a very thin layer over the top pie crust before baking. 7. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the top crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly. If you find the pie crust is browning too quickly, cover it with a piece of aluminum foil. 8. Rest and serve: Allow turkey pot pie to cool for at least 15-20 minutes before serving, to allow it to set up.

letter from the PUBLISHER November invites us to slow down and reflect on the people and moments that make our lives meaningful. As we welcome our Thankful issue, my heart is full of gratitude for the blessings in my own life and for the community I have the privilege of serving. First and foremost, I am thankful for my family. My amazing husband and daughters are my greatest joy. Their love, encouragement, and the everyday moments we share mean more to me than words can express. Even when life gets busy, they remind me to pause, be present, and appreciate what matters most. I am also deeply grateful for our incredible partners. Behind every local business are people who work hard, take chances, and put their hearts into what they do. Their trust and support help us share the stories that connect our community, and I am honored to work alongside them. And to our readers and neighbors: thank you. Your kindness, generosity, and willingness to show up for one another make this community special. Whether you support a local business, volunteer your time, or lend a hand to a neighbor, your actions make a difference. While Thanksgiving gives us a beautiful reason to gather and express our appreciation, gratitude deserves a place in every single day. It can be as simple as thanking someone who makes your life easier, noticing a small kindness, or taking a moment to appreciate an ordinary afternoon with the people you love. Even during difficult seasons, we can find something worth holding close. My hope is that this issue inspires you to make thankfulness a daily practice. Tell your people what they mean to you. Recognize the good around you. Remember that the moments we sometimes rush through may be the very ones we will someday treasure most. With a thankful heart,

LAURIE SICAEROS GUIDES THE FUTU RE OF C A NCER C A RE I N A RIZON A

EXP E RT H E LP | EDUCATION

ARTICLE BY KARI WATTS PHOTOGRAPHY BY SCOTT FOUST STUDIOS

Cancer touches almost every family in some way. In Arizona, more than 40,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year, creating an urgent need for advanced care, innovative treatments, and greater access to specialists across the state. As Arizona’s population continues to grow and age, the demand for world-class cancer services has never been greater. Meeting that challenge is City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona, part of City of Hope, one of the nation’s largest cancer research and treatment organizations. Leading its next chapter is Laurie Sicaeros, a nationally recognized healthcare executive whose career has been defined by strategic growth, transformational leadership, and a deep commitment to improving patient care. For Sicaeros, healthcare leadership is about more than operations and strategy. It is about helping people access the advanced cancer care they need. “Every patient deserves access to the latest cancer research and treatments,” Sicaeros says. “We are committed to bringing that expertise closer to home for more Arizonans.” With more than 25 years of healthcare leadership experience, Sicaeros brings an impressive track record of building high-performing organizations, advancing physician partnerships, and leading transformational

growth initiatives. Before joining City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona, she served as chief strategy officer for MemorialCare Medical Group and chief operating officer for MemorialCare Medical Foundation, where she played a key role in driving innovation and expanding access to care. But perhaps what makes her leadership especially meaningful today is the timing. Arizona is facing significant cancer care challenges. Beyond a growing population, many communities continue to encounter barriers to early diagnosis, specialty expertise, clinical trials, and advanced therapies. Addressing these gaps requires not only medical innovation but also meaningful community engagement and culturally responsive care. City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona is uniquely positioned to meet this need through leading-edge expertise, precision medicine, and groundbreaking therapies delivered across the state. Anchored by its cancer hospital in Goodyear, City of Hope’s network of care centers in North Phoenix, North Scottsdale, Gilbert, and its newest location in Prescott brings advanced cancer care closer to patients where they live. This commitment to innovation is further strengthened by City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona partnership with the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), which helps accelerate discoveries from the laboratory into real-world patient care, expanding access to cutting-edge treatments and clinical advances throughout Arizona. “Together with TGen, we’re unlocking the genetic blueprint of cancer, allowing us to understand each patient’s disease in extraordinary detail and deliver truly personalized care.” says Dr. Alan H. Bryce, Oncologist, Chief Clinical Officer, City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona. Under Sicaeros’ leadership, expanding access remains a central priority. Her vision includes strengthening relationships with physicians and healthcare providers, expanding services into more communities, and ensuring patients can benefit from the latest advances in cancer care without leaving Arizona. Equally important is creating an exceptional patient experience, one that treats individuals and families with compassion, dignity, and personalized support throughout their cancer journey. That patient-centered philosophy aligns closely with City of Hope’s longstanding reputation for combining innovative science with compassionate care. As cancer therapies become

increasingly sophisticated, patients are seeking providers that can offer specialized expertise while also delivering coordinated, whole-person care. Sicaeros believes Arizona deserves both. As City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona continues to expand its reach, the addition of a new care center in Prescott marks a significant milestone in bringing advanced cancer care closer to northern Arizona communities. The new location strengthens one of the nation’s largest and most advanced cancer research and treatment organizations while increasing access for patients and families across the region. By fostering collaboration among physicians, researchers, community organizations, and healthcare leaders, she is helping support this growth and advance a stronger, more integrated cancer care ecosystem. As Laurie Sicaeros leads City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona into its next phase of growth, her mission remains clear: expand access, accelerate innovation, strengthen partnerships, and make hope a reality for more patients than ever before. GIVING TOGETHER A Community That Shows Up

that’s where our readers come in. If you know someone quietly struggling, whether it’s a single parent, a senior citizen, or a family facing something they never saw coming, we want to hear their story. Nominations are what make this whole campaign possible.

We provided a chair lift for a teenager paralyzed in a gymnastics accident so she could move freely through her own home again. We helped a child who lost an eye to cancer get the prosthetic because insurance wouldn’t cover it. We covered dental work for a man who needed his smile back just to walk into a job interview. We got heat turned back on for a family who had spent part of the winter without it. We helped a family keep up with bills while a husband and father fought pancreatic cancer, and we helped another family cover medical expenses after the unimaginable loss of a child. These are just a few examples of some of the hundreds of individuals that have been helped through nominations from readers like you. None of it happens without someone noticing first and speaking up. "We don't just send checks," says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle.

“We send a message: You are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.” Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond the holiday season. "This is about community," Matthew says. "We believe we've been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing." Often, the person making the nomination gets just as much out of the experience as the recipient. There's something powerful about being part of the reason someone else's burden got lighter, especially when that need might have otherwise gone unnoticed. The campaign is completely confidential. No names are ever shared or publicized, and nominating someone is as simple as telling us their story. We are looking for those in our communities who fall between the cracks of getting help, and together as a community, we can meet those needs.

Nominations open November 1st and close December 3rd. To nominate someone in your community, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and find the form in our bio, or visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org.

This season, giving starts with you. Let's do it together. Nominate someone in need today.

Ending lung cancer starts with Hope – and the right team Precision medicine, immunotherapy and other advanced therapies are helping more people with lung cancer live longer, fuller lives. This Lung Cancer Awareness Month, City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona is highlighting the people and science behind this progress.

A diagnosis and a decision

In March 2019, Abby Kanarek had a backache. An X-ray revealed a mass in her lung. Diagnosed with stage IV non-small cell lung cancer, she was told by one doctor to get her affairs in order. Abby sought a second opinion, leading her to City of Hope. “Better than anyone else, City of Hope integrates all of the care,” she said. Her City of Hope team tested the cancer’s biology and found she was a candidate for a newly approved first-line immunotherapy. Six years after diagnosis, her scans are stable. She got married, travels and recently became a grandmother. “They give you your life back,” she said.

One plan, every specialist

One of the nation’s largest and most advanced cancer organizations, City of Hope brings together more than 2,000 expert physicians, scientists and researchers to develop a coordinated plan for each patient and offers eligible patients access to leading-edge clinical trials. With a cancer hospital in Goodyear and outpatient locations across the Valley, City of Hope Cancer Center Phoenix is the only Arizona cancer center with The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Lung Cancer Certification. A partnership with the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) brings genomic analysis directly into every lung cancer plan. “Lung cancer is many diseases, each defined by its own biology,” said Christine M. Lovly, M.D., Ph.D., Chief of Thoracic Medical Oncology. “When treatment is matched to a tumor’s characteristics, and every specialist works from the same plan, patients like Abby have options that didn’t exist a few years ago.”

“Arizona has one of the lowest lung cancer screening rates in the country, yet screening can find lung cancer earlier, when treatment has the greatest chance of success.” Amit Kulkarni, M.D.

Know your risk

In Arizona, an estimated 4,350 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year, including people who have never smoked. Annual low-dose CT screenings are recommended for adults 50 to 80 with a significant smoking history, because cancer found early offers the most treatment options. “Arizona has one of the lowest lung cancer screening rates in the country, yet screening can find lung cancer earlier, when treatment has the greatest chance of success,” said Amit Kulkarni, M.D., Medical Oncologist, City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona. “Don’t wait for symptoms. Talk with your doctor about whether lung cancer screening is right for you.” Taking control of your disease starts with visiting CityofHope.org/Arizona to learn more.
