Dear Readers,
As we step into May, we find ourselves embracing the warmth of the spring and the promise of renewal. This month, we take a moment to reflect on the powerful role that women play in the fabric of our community. From our mothers and sisters to our neighbors, colleagues, and friends, women shape the world around us with strength, resilience, and unwavering dedication.
Strong women are the heartbeat of our neighborhoods, workplaces, and families. They are the ones who inspire us through their actions, uplift us through their support, and drive us forward with their determination. Whether they are leading initiatives, fostering connections, or simply being a source of love and care, their influence is felt in every corner of our lives.
In May, we celebrate not only their achievements but also the quiet yet extraordinary ways they make an impact. These women are teachers, mentors, healers, creators, and so much more. They are the ones who rise to the challenge, embrace the unknown, and face each day with courage and grace. It is in these moments of strength that the true power of community is felt—where everyone, regardless of role, is lifted by the contributions of those who lead with heart.
As we honor the remarkable women in our lives, let’s remember the importance of their presence and the ripple effects of their influence. Strong women are integral to the health, growth, and spirit of our community, and for that, we are endlessly grateful. This May, let us celebrate them in all their forms, for their strength is a beacon of hope and possibility for us all.
All my best,

May is always an exciting month, and this year is especially meaningful as we celebrate the outstanding women in our lives. In March, I had the honor of attending a women’s awards dinner where several incredible women were recognized. One question that stood out was, “Have you ever been inspired by another woman?” My answer would be all of them. Every woman I meet has a unique and inspiring story. In this issue, we asked the community to nominate influential women in the West Valley. The nominations were heartfelt and genuine, and we are fortunate to have these amazing women among us. We’ve interviewed them and are proud to feature them as this month’s Surprise City Lifestyle Influential Women. It’s an honor to share their stories with you.
And no May issue would be complete without showing love to the woman who made me who I am today—my mother, Mickey. She’s been the foundation for everything I do and all I strive for. She pushes boundaries, sets high standards, and rises above any challenge. She always told me that “can’t” was not in my vocabulary and that I could achieve anything with hard work. She taught me the value of education and matters of the heart—lessons I’ve passed on to my four daughters. She’s not only my mother but my best friend, and I’m forever grateful for her.
To all the incredible women in our community, thank you for being who you are. I feel lucky to be surrounded by such inspiring women.
Happy Mother’s Day!

Meeting Lisa Roux, you’re immediately drawn to her warmth and quiet confidence. Beneath her friendly exterior, however, is a woman who has dedicated herself to empowering others—particularly women— in the firearms world. What began as an unexpected journey quickly blossomed into a lifelong passion. As she joins us for our interview, dressed in a chic lilac dress, her sophisticated style and presence are both strong and inviting, embodying the natural qualities of a leader and mentor.
Lisa’s story began in 2009 when she met her future husband, Phil, who was running the original Shooters World in Phoenix. At the time, Lisa was a successful luxury real estate agent in Scottsdale, with little experience in firearms. But one day, Phil took her to the desert to teach her how to shoot, and something clicked. “The feeling of empowerment was something I couldn’t replicate anywhere else,” she recalls. “It was an eye-opening experience.”
A year later, when Phil planned to expand Shooters World, Lisa decided to leave her real estate career behind and join the firearms industry. She quickly became an integral part of the business, earning her NRA instructor certification. As one of the few women on the range staff, Lisa became a role model for other women navigating this male-dominated space.

Empowering women became the cornerstone of Lisa’s work. During “Ladies Day” events, she noticed women seeking a comfortable space where they could learn without feeling intimidated. “I knew I could make a difference in this community,” Lisa says. Teaching women the basics of firearm safety and responsible firearm handling became her mission. But Lisa also focused on teaching kids the fundamentals of gun safety.
An advocate for responsible firearm ownership, Lisa emphasizes the importance of teaching children gun safety, even if a family doesn’t own firearms. “In Arizona, we teach our kids to swim, so why not teach them the basics of gun safety too? It’s about preparing them for what they might encounter elsewhere,” she explains. Her Children’s Gun Safety classes, for ages 4-7, teach kids how to respond if they encounter a firearm.
Under Lisa’s leadership, Shooters World flourished, culminating in the opening of a sprawling 36,000-square-foot facility after seven years of searching for the perfect location. The building, formerly home to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, has since transformed into a vibrant hub of community education. It offers everything from family handgun introductions to defensive pistol courses, alongside a retail clothing line. Lisa meticulously selects instructors who align with her vision, ensuring that every class is engaging, well-paced, and empowering for all participants.
Outside of work, Lisa’s life is filled with family and adventure. She and Phil share a blended family of five children, ranging in age from 13 to 31. They enjoy outdoor activities, hiking, and playing Pickleball. Through the ups and downs of family life, Lisa remains committed to the values of empowerment— whether on the shooting range or navigating life’s challenges.
Today, Lisa Roux is not just a business owner but a leader in her community, showing women and families the importance of responsibility, safety, and confidence. Her dedication to education and empowerment makes her a true inspiration. In an ever-changing world, Lisa reminds us that transformative experiences often come from the most unexpected places.

TRANSFORMING FLORALS INTO ART
Flowers have a rich history of symbolic meanings. As far back as the 19th century, they were used to convey secret messages. Stories throughout history recount how flowers were used to send hidden messages between people. French publishers began producing flower dictionaries that cataloged the many floral codes that had been gathered over time. Some of these meanings were linked to the flower’s root name, often derived from mythology, while others were drawn from the flowers themselves. The colors, medicinal properties, and even the
Add a burst of color and texture to your floral arrangement by layering fruit around the edges of your vase. To achieve this, place a smaller vase inside a larger one, ensuring the flowers stay contained in the inner vase. Fill the surrounding space with water, then arrange sliced fruit along the vase’s outer sides. For a fresh touch, add ice cubes to keep the fruit looking vibrant longer and to hold them in place. Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.
superstitions associated with these flowers all contributed to the creation of this secret language.
In addition to their symbolic significance, flowers bring natural beauty to any interior, enhancing spaces with their color, texture, and mood-boosting qualities. Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance. There are multiple ways to creatively integrate florals into your home, and whether using fresh or artificial flowers, creative displays can make quite the statement piece.
For a dramatic effect, try creating a hanging floral display. Floral cones are available for this style, or you can craft your own for a more personalized, organic look. The contrast between long-stemmed white flowers and a dark wall creates a striking visual impact.
No matter how you choose to display them, flowers are a wonderful addition to any room. They boost mood, improve air quality, spark creativity, and bring a decorative charm to any space.
Using a frog to display flowers creates a minimalist yet elegant look that highlights the individuality of each bloom. It helps the stems stay in place. To set it up, place the frog on your chosen display base, whether it’s a vase, bowl, platter, or any container you prefer. Then, simply insert the flower stems by gently pressing them into the prongs. Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.
