HELPING PETS AND PEOPLE THRIVE WITH HEART, HUMOR, AND SKILL

Kristi Kay May is the owner and visionary behind Legend Acres Dog and Horse Solutions and the nationally recognized Legend’s Heroes Service Dog Training Program. Her journey into the world of animal care and training began at an early age and was inspired by a lifelong love of animals, a deep sense of community, and a desire to serve others in meaningful ways.
Originally from the small town of Port Hope, Michigan, where dairy cows outnumber the people, Kristi’s roots are grounded in humble beginnings and rural values. She got her first horse around the age of six and quickly became immersed in the world of horse shows, competitions, and 4-H events. Those early experiences not only shaped her work ethic but also ignited a passion that would carry through her entire life.
After joining the U.S. Army, Kristi had to put her involvement with horses on pause. But that passion was never far from her heart. Once stationed near Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Kristi was finally able to purchase a small farm and reintroduce animals into her daily life. It was here, surrounded by dogs and horses, that she saw a need in the local community for safe, reliable, and affordable pet boarding. That realization led to the creation of Legend Acres Boarding.

What began as a practical solution for her own post-military lifestyle quickly evolved into something much greater. With her unique background in animal science and veterinary technology, Kristi founded Legend Acres Dog and Horse Solutions, a company that now offers a full range of dog training, horse boarding, and behavior consultation services. Soon after, she launched the Legend’s Heroes Service Dog Training Program, designed to support veterans, first responders, and individuals with disabilities in training their own service animals using accessible, affordable methods.
Kristi’s hard work, service, and entrepreneurial spirit recently earned her the prestigious title of 2025 Arizona Vetrepreneur of the Year, an award that celebrates veterans who continue to lead and make a difference in their communities through business. This recognition is a testament to Kristi’s dedication to improving the lives of both people and animals. She credits this achievement to her loyal clients and community supporters and extends heartfelt thanks for helping her reach this milestone.
training to those who need it most. Her programs are designed to empower clients with the tools and knowledge to train their dogs using gentle, effective, and psychologically sound techniques.
“At Legend Acres Dog Training, we understand that your dog is more than a pet, they’re family,” says Kristi. “We help you learn how your dog communicates and how they learn so you can build a trusting, two-way relationship.”
Legend Acres offers flexible training options tailored to your lifestyle, including virtual and on-demand classes, private sessions, and group courses. Whether you’re training a new puppy, addressing anxiety or aggression, or starting your service dog journey, Legend Acres has a program that fits.
“At Legend Acres Dog Training we understand that your dog is a part of your family.”
— Kristi Kay May
All trainers at Legend Acres begin their journey as clients. They go through the exact same training programs with their own pets, giving them firsthand experience with the methods they now teach. This approach creates a compassionate, relatable, and supportive environment for every client.
As Kristi moves forward into the next phase of national recognition, your continued support means the world. Help her represent Arizona and the veteran entrepreneur community on a national stage by spreading the word and supporting her mission.
Kristi’s core belief is simple yet powerful: to provide affordable, accessible service dog
With a strong reputation for using a psychological and behavior-based approach, Legend Acres continues to transform the way families communicate with their dogs. From obedience and cognition classes to full-service behavior management, their mission remains unwavering: to make quality dog training available to everyone.
When Kristi’s not leading her team or training dogs, you’ll find her spending time with her own pups, Legend, Grunt, and Tuff, riding horses, kayaking, or curled up with a good book.
From an early age, Dr. Kamal Alfakiani, known to his patients simply as Dr. Kamal, felt a deep calling toward healthcare. What began as a childhood dream evolved into a purpose-driven career built on a unique blend of science, artistry, and human connection. Today, Dr. Kamal is the heart behind Surprise Orthodontics, a place where over 5,000 patients have found confidence through braces and Invisalign since 2001.
Dr. Kamal’s journey into orthodontics is as inspiring as the transformations he helps create. Originally from Syria, he began his professional training by earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at Damascus University. His passion for enhancing smiles took him further, leading him to complete a Master’s Degree in Orthodontics at the University of Buffalo School of Medicine in 2005. His excellence didn’t go unnoticed and he was quickly invited to join the university’s Department of Orthodontics as an Assistant Professor. Later, he served as an adjunct professor at A.T. Still University in Mesa, where he helped the next generation of orthodontists master Invisalign techniques.
But Dr. Kamal’s story goes beyond degrees and accolades. What truly sets him apart is his commitment to people. “I realized how powerful a smile can be and it’s not just about aesthetics, but about confidence, self-expression, and joy,” he says. This belief fuels his work every day, and it’s what drew him to orthodontics in the first place.
A typical day at Surprise Orthodontics begins with a morning huddle, where Dr. Kamal and his team align on their schedule and patient needs. From there, the office buzzes with positivity and purpose, whether they’re welcoming new patients, adjusting braces, or celebrating the completion of a smile
transformation. The team works closely together behind the scenes to ensure every visit feels seamless and personalized.
Known for his ability to connect with patients of all ages, Dr. Kamal has a gift for turning complex procedures into simple, approachable explanations and especially for kids. He and his team use animations, videos, and friendly language to make orthodontics fun and stress-free. “We talk directly to the kids, encourage questions, and help them feel excited about their smile journey,” he says.
That same thoughtful approach extends to patients who may feel anxious or fearful. Creating a safe and calm environment is a top priority. Dr. Kamal and his team take the time to listen, explain each step gently, and move at a pace that feels comfortable. For him, it’s not just about aligning teeth, it’s about building trust.
Surprise Orthodontics stands out not only for its warm atmosphere but also for its innovative offerings. Patients can choose from traditional metal braces, LightForce customized clear braces, or Invisalign, all available at the same price point. The office also offers flexible financing and before- and afterschool or work appointments, making it easier than ever to fit orthodontic care into a busy lifestyle. For those eager to start right away, same-day braces are often available.
In a true commitment to patient satisfaction, the practice offers a 100% Lifetime Guarantee. If a patient’s teeth shift after completing treatment, they can restart without paying full treatment fees again and only the cost of a regular office visit and retainers. It’s a promise that has saved patients thousands and delivered a lifetime of peace of mind.
While Dr. Kamal takes immense pride in his work, his life is full beyond the clinic. He and his wife are raising four children, two girls and two boys, who keep them on their toes. A devoted soccer fan, Dr. Kamal plays in local matches and always roots for Liverpool. Known affectionately as a “walking encyclopedia,” he also loves brain games and trivia, often sharing quirky facts that delight his staff and patients alike.
His heart for community shines through his philanthropic work. Dr. Kamal supports local and statewide organizations such as Arizona Autism United, Aid to Adoption of Special Kids (AASK), the Arizona Burn Foundation, Cultural Cup, and the Arizona Military Family Relief Fund. Whether hosting open houses, sponsoring school sports teams, or leading donation drives, his goal is always to give back to the families who trust him with their care.
What does Dr. Kamal hope every patient remembers about their experience? “I want them to look back on their smile journey with joy, knowing they were cared for like family,” he shares. “It’s not just about the results, it’s about the kindness, support, and personal attention they receive every step of the way.”
In a world where healthcare can often feel impersonal, Dr. Kamal Alfakiani and the team at Surprise Orthodontics are a refreshing reminder that expertise and heart go hand in hand. One smile at a time, they’re changing lives and making Arizona a little brighter.
“I REALIZED HOW POWERFUL A SMILE CAN BE AND IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT AESTHETICS, BUT ABOUT CONFIDENCE, SELF-EXPRESSION, AND JOY.”
Happy Back to School! As a mom of four, the end of summer is always bittersweet. I will miss the amazing time we got spent together, the adventures we took and the memories we made throughout the summer. But I am also excited for their upcoming school year, new achievements, exciting milestones and the friendships they will continue and new ones they create. Now we get to share in the excitement and dread of school clothes shopping, newest trends, school supplies, lost lunch boxes, meet the teacher and all the fun that goes into the new school year. But with all that comes football, school plays, concerts and so much more.
I am so excited to bring you our Kids and Pets issue. We have included some amazing local businesses that cater to not only our two legged kiddos but our four legged ones too! From Dr. Kamal and his Krew at Surprise Orthodontics who personally takes care of all of my girls for years and treats them and all of their patients like family. We also have Legend Acres which is veteran owned and offers not only dog training but horse training and riding lessons. And a new addition to Surprise, Actors PlayGROUND! Actors PlayGROUND has been a long standing need in our community so our kids can experience the theatre and those of you who are still kids at heart can still enjoy the thrill of the stage or enjoy the shows and support our local youth in community theatre. I hope everyone has a smooth back to school and I’ll see you all around town!
Actors PLAYground was born from a lifelong love of theater and a desire to create something meaningful for the next generation. Founder and Artistic Director Amber Ryan has always felt at home on stage. That passion took root when her mother brought her to her first play as a young girl. From that moment on, she was captivated, not just by the show, but by the magic theater could spark within people.
Years later, when Amber’s daughter was just five, she stepped into the world of youth theater again and this time as a teacher, mentor, and advocate. She began leading programs for her daughter and her daughter’s friends, eventually helping launch youth offerings at several Phoenix-area theaters. Through every role, on and off stage, Amber saw how theater could build not only performers, but people. Her next act: founding Actors PLAYground, a place where artistic exploration and personal transformation go hand-in-hand.
At the heart of Actors PLAYground are four guiding values: confidence, community, growth, and play. The theater provides more than performance opportunities, it

offers a safe and inclusive space where kids, teens, and families feel seen, heard, and supported. It’s a place where young actors grow in their craft and in character. From shy children gaining confidence to teens discovering their voice, the impact is lasting.
Actors PLAYground began with youth programming and quickly expanded to serve homeschoolers, young adults, and families. Their daytime classes meet the rising demand from homeschooling families, while the 20-something series gives performers aged 15–24 access to meaningful, mature material. Family productions bring multiple generations together, as seen in beloved shows like Anne of Green Gables and Snow White, with audiences and performers alike ranging in age from 5 to 105.
This season, the theater continues its tradition of powerful storytelling with titles like Charlotte’s Web, Peter Pan, and The Nutcracker for youth and family audiences, while the 20-something
series takes a deeper dive with dramatic pieces like To the Moon, which touches on domestic violence.
Community involvement is a vital part of the PLAYground experience. Volunteers are always welcome, whether it’s building sets, helping with costumes, or ushering guests. Local businesses can also partner with the theater through sponsorships, supporting its mission to bring the performing arts to all.
A standout addition is the new advanced homeschool program featuring audition-based shows like Little Women and A Murder is Announced.
Within just 18 months, enrollment has tripled. Excitement is also building for the double-cast production of Puffs and a special trivia night on July 20, a must for fans of a certain famous boy wizard.
For Amber Ryan, the reward is in the transformation she sees in every student. Watching a timid child deliver their first line with confidence or seeing a teen step into leadership onstage is what fuels her passion.
At Actors PLAYground, it’s not just about putting on a good show, it’s about creating a space where creativity thrives, growth is encouraged, and everyone feels like they belong. Because here, the magic of theater is real and it happens every single day.

A young artist’s vision soars as Rainbow Ryders and ACFC team up to bring joy, healing, and inspiration skyward.
Rainbow Ryders, the premier hot air balloon company in the Southwest, has been creating unforgettable experiences in the sky since 1983. With locations in Phoenix, Albuquerque, Colorado Springs, and Park City, Rainbow Ryders operates a fleet of 40 balloons and employs FAA-certified pilots with more than 50,000 hours of combined flight time. The company has flown over 750,000 passengers and is best known for its daily sunrise rides, signature events, and role as the official hot air balloon ride provider for the Albuquerque
International Balloon Fiesta® since 1999. At the heart of Rainbow Ryders is a commitment to creating joy, fostering connection, and giving back to the communities they serve.
In that spirit, Rainbow Ryders is proud to announce a special collaboration with the Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children (ACFC), unveiling a one-of-a-kind hot air balloon banner created by the cousin of a local pediatric cancer warrior.
This heartfelt initiative invited children supported by ACFC to submit original artwork for the chance to see their vision take flight. Dozens of inspiring and colorful submissions were received, each one reflecting the imagination, strength, and spirit of these brave young artists. One young girl’s artwork, a vibrant depiction of hope and resilience, was chosen to be transformed into a custom banner.
“It’s an honor to bring this young artist’s vision to life,” says Lindsay Mayer, Director of Operations at Rainbow Ryders. “Her design will fly high as a symbol of strength, creativity, and the courage these children show every single day.”
To mark the occasion, Rainbow Ryders hosted a sunrise balloon flight for the winning artist and her family, where the banner was unveiled in the sky for the very first time, turning a simple drawing into a powerful, uplifting experience.
“For our families facing the unimaginable, moments like these are everything,” shares Chrisie Abramo, President and Founder of ACFC. “Rainbow Ryders continues to be an incredible partner in helping us create joyful, lasting memories.”
Building on the success of the event, Rainbow Ryders plans to expand the “Design a Balloon” program into a quarterly campaign, giving even more children the opportunity to see their creativity lifted into the sky, offering hope where it’s needed most.

There’s something truly special about inviting your child into the kitchen—not just for the cookies or cupcakes, but for the confidence, creativity, and connection that come with it. Cooking with your children isn’t just a fun way to pass the time; it’s an opportunity to build lifelong skills and memories that stick.
Sure, teaching a young child how to crack an egg or measure flour can test your patience—but hang in there. With a little trial and a fair amount of error, they’ll start to develop the fine motor skills that allow them to prep a recipe all on their own one day. The best part? They’ll gain confidence along the way, one scoop, stir, and sprinkle at a time.
Cooking together also taps into something a little magical—memory. The smell of cookies baking or chili simmering on the stove can instantly transport us back to childhood. That’s not just nostalgia talking—science backs it up. Our sense of smell is closely tied to autobiographical memory, especially memories formed early in life. So those sweet, savory scents? They’re more powerful than you might think.
The key is to start simple. Let your toddler play with mixing bowls, spoons, and measuring cups. These little moments of pretend play actually help build the fine motor skills needed for real kitchen tasks. Begin with small jobs—scooping flour, flattening cookie dough with a rolling pin—and gradually add more steps as your child becomes more confident.
It won’t be perfect. The flour might fly, the sugar might spill, and the measurements might be slightly off—and that’s okay. Embrace the mess, stay patient, and focus on the fun. A dash of encouragement and a sprinkle of praise go a long way in keeping your little chef engaged and excited.
Over time, you’ll see the magic unfold: a child who’s not only learning how to cook but also growing more independent, capable, and proud of what they’ve created. And who knows? Maybe one day, they’ll pass those same recipes—and memories—on to their own kids.
• 1 cup and 2 tablespoons white flour
• 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 cup oatmeal
• 4 tablespoons honey
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
• 4 tablespoons buttermilk
• 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
• 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
• Optional: add 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg or cinnamon
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
2. Put the oatmeal in a blender or food processor and pulse for about a minute, until it’s reduced to a rough powder. Add the ground oatmeal to the whole wheat and 1/2 cup of the white flour, baking soda and salt to the bowl of an electric mixer affixed with a paddle attachment, and turn on to mix. Add butter and blend on medium speed until the butter has been incorporated and the mix looks a little like wet sand. Add the buttermilk, vanilla, honey and almond extract and blend. If the dough looks too wet to roll, add the remaining flour 1/4 cup at a time until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the blender.
3. Turn the dough out onto a piece of plastic wrap and flatten into a disc. Cover completely and chill in the fridge for at least one hour, up to overnight.
4. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 400 degrees and place dough on a lightly floured surface (using the remaining 2 tablespoons of flour). Roll out until 1/8 inch thick. Cut out with desired cookie cutters and bake for five to seven minutes, based on your preference. Five minutes will get you a softer cracker, while seven will get you a crisp cracker.
Enjoy!
