LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter from the Editor Style isn't something you buy. It's something you create. It can be found in the way you design your home, the architecture that shapes a city, the businesses that bring fresh ideas to life, and even in the way a community chooses to gather. This month's issue celebrates style in all of its forms— from timeless elegance to thoughtful innovation. We begin with Monarch Estate Services, a company redefining what it means to care for your home. Whether you're a busy professional, a frequent traveler, or simply someone who values your time, professional estate management offers peace of mind at a fraction of the cost of maintaining a fulltime household staff. Sometimes the most stylish investment isn't something you add to your home—it's removing the stress of managing it. Our fashion-style feature offers fresh ideas for creating beautiful items that reflect your taste without stretching your budget. Great design has never been about how much you spend. It's about making thoughtful choices. Photographer Jay Cohen captures the city's architecture with an artist's eye, transforming familiar buildings into dramatic studies of light, line, texture, and form. His photographs remind us that some of the most compelling works of art are hiding in plain sight—we simply need to slow down long enough to notice them. And, meet Tommy Pellini - an innovative artist creating functional art. Our Business Monthly section shines a spotlight on the people helping Stamford evolve. From professionals stepping into new leadership roles to entrepreneurs launching exciting new ventures, these stories celebrate the creativity, ambition, and vision that continue to shape our community. Style isn't just how things look—it's about how people connect. This fall, Stamford will become the first city in Connecticut to host The Longest Table, joining a growing global movement that brings neighbors together over a shared meal. The concept is beautifully simple: bring your own meal, bring something to share, and take a seat beside someone you've never met. In a world that often feels divided, one long table may be one of the most stylish ideas of all. As you enjoy this issue, I hope you'll discover inspiration not only in beautiful spaces and remarkable people, but also in the countless ways style enriches the way we live, work, and build community. After all, true style isn't about impressing others... It's about expressing who we are.

Tommy Pellini transforms salvaged materials into whimsical, functional art masterpieces

Growing up in Waterside section of Stamford in the 1960s and ’70s, Stamford-based artist Tommy Pellini (aka Tommy Utah Designs) learned early that creativity often begins with imagination, resourcefulness and a willingness to build something from nothing. Today, that same spirit defines his distinctive steampunk-inspired creations—one-of-a-kind works that blend industrial design, nostalgia and storytelling into functional art. A retired union electrician, Tommy discovered a renewed creative spark after leaving his longtime career. What began as a pinball-themed table quickly evolved into an expansive collection of custom lamps, sculptural installations and conversation pieces crafted from pipes, gauges, salvaged metal and vintage-inspired materials. Each work reflects both precision craftsmanship and playful personality. Tommy’s artistic style is rooted in the hands-on lessons of his childhood where he developed a lifelong appreciation for working with his hands and transforming everyday materials into something memorable. “When I was a kid, I was always building or making things, and then in my ‘50’s I graduated to putting motors in them and making things move”, says Pellini. In recent years, his work has attracted collectors seeking statement pieces with character and originality. Tommy has also donated many creations to charitable causes throughout the community. Most people see a building. I see a sculpture. Architecture is one of the few art forms we can actually live inside. It shelters us, inspires us, challenges us, and occasionally stops us in our tracks. Every curve, line, angle, beam, and bolt exists for a reason. There are no wasted CONTINUED >

gestures. No happy accidents. Every decision is deliberate—a conversation between engineering and imagination. That's what fascinates me. When I photograph architecture, I'm not interested in creating a record of a building. I'm interested in revealing its personality. I want to strip away the distractions and expose the sensual relationship between light, shadow, texture, and form. A cold sheet of steel can suddenly become elegant. Concrete can feel soft. Glass can shimmer like silk. Photography allows me to reinterpret architecture rather than simply document it. Light is my co-conspirator. I often wait for the precise moment when the sun sculpts a façade with dramatic shadows or transforms reflective glass into liquid gold. Long exposures stretch clouds into brushstrokes and blur traffic into ribbons of color, giving otherwise static structures a pulse. In post-processing, I enhance contrast, emphasize geometry, and draw the viewer's eye toward the architectural details that first caught mine. I'm naturally drawn to contemporary architecture with bold geometric lines, unexpected materials, and fearless design. Steel against weathered brick. Concrete beside glass. Sharp angles interrupted by sweeping curves. But compelling subjects aren't limited to celebrated landmarks. Beauty can emerge from an old diner, a neighborhood ice cream stand, or even the raw symmetry of a parking garage. While New York City offers an endless gallery of architectural icons just a train ride away, some of my favorite discoveries are much closer to home. Stamford's skyline is constantly evolving, with cranes signaling tomorrow's landmarks before they're even finished. That constant transformation keeps me coming back. I've photographed Landmark Square dozens of times, yet no two images are alike. The light changes. The weather shifts. The city breathes. The building stays the same. The art never does.

The Longest Table ARTICLE BY MARTY SHAPIRO

TAKE A SEAT AT STAMFORD’S MOST INSPIRING TABLE On September 19, the heart of downtown Stamford will transform into something extraordinary. People from all over Stamford will gather in Mill River Park for The Longest Table - a free, community event that brings people together for a shared meal and conversation. It’s a simple way to create moments of joy, make new friends, build stronger neighborhoods, and celebrate the spirit of Stamford. Presented by Stamford City Lifestyle, with the generous support of the Mill River Collective and the City of Stamford, this event promises a few hours where community and culture meet in one unforgettable setting. A communal table stretching through the park will serve as the centerpiece for the afternoon, inviting guests to slow down, share a meal, and engage with the people who make Stamford such a dynamic place to live and work. At a time when authentic connection feels more valuable than ever, The Longest Table offers a refreshing reminder of the power of gathering. Inspired by similar experiences hosted in cities around the world, the Stamford edition aims to create meaningful interactions among guests from all walks of life while showcasing the city’s growing sense of creativity, hospitality, and civic pride.

The choice of Mill River Park as the venue is fitting. The park has become one of Stamford’s most beloved gathering spaces, symbolizing the city’s continued revitalization and commitment to creating experiences that bring people together. Against its scenic urban backdrop, The Longest Table is poised to become one of the season’s signature events. SLOW FASHION, Mindful Style

PRESSING PAUSE ON FAST FASHION FOR SUSTAINABLE STYLE

ARTICLE BY EVA GLASSMAN

We’ve all purchased a blouse, pair of pants, or dress that ripped immediately at the seams, or the zipper got stuck and broke right away. It’s heartbreaking. Have you ever noticed that clothes from 30, 40, 50+ years ago just look and feel better? It seems to be the unfortunate reality today that our clothing simply isn’t the same quality as the styles of the past. According to the UN Environment Program, the number of times a garment has been worn has declined by 36% in just 15 years, yet fast fashion brands are producing twice the amount of clothes today than in 2000. The consequences of cheaply-produced clothing and the fast fashion industry are more than just our personal disappointment and frustration. These fast fashion brands create damaging impacts on the environment. According to Earth.org, 92 million tons of textile waste are produced every year by these brands—that’s a garbage truck full of clothes entering a landfill every second—with predictions that, without intervention, the amount of waste will reach 134 million tons by 2030. Where is this waste coming from? While much comes from the waste that clothing companies generate in garment production, a lot of it comes from us, too, when we toss away clothes that are worn out or that we simply don’t want anymore. According to the EPA, Americans generate 11.3 million tons of textile waste that ends up in landfills. Even when we do our best to donate or recycle unwanted clothes, we still contribute to the fast fashion environmental crisis. There’s a lot we can’t control about our environmental impact because of corporations like those in the fast fashion industry—but that doesn’t mean our individual efforts are meaningless. Enter: slow fashion. CONTINUED >

Yarn from old sweaters

According to Good on You, an organization rating fashion and beauty brands on sustainability, “[Slow fashion] encompasses an awareness and approach to fashion that carefully considers the processes and resources required to make clothing. It advocates for buying better-quality garments that will last longer, and values fair treatment of people, animals, and the planet along the way.“ If fast fashion is produced with poor materials and unethical labor practices, then slow fashion is produced ethically with high-quality fibers. If fast fashion is about keeping up with trends, then slow fashion is about timeless, durable pieces. If fast fashion is about the low price tag, then yes, slow fashion might be more expensive up front. However, what’s ultimately cheaper: buying a new, $40, cotton-acrylic sweater every year, or a $100+ wool-blend sweater that will actually keep you warm that you’ll have for decades, maybe forever? The cost-per-wear reveals the true difference; you’ll actually save money if it means you’re buying less often. But slow fashion isn’t just buying from brands that are environmentally- and ethically - conscious. In fact, you don’t have to buy anything new to join the slow fashion movement; there are other ways you can reduce your participation in the growing textile waste crisis. Buying clothes secondhand is a fabulous antidote to fast fashion, especially if you find something vintage with that

lasting quality most clothes today are lacking. If you thrive hunting for that perfect piece, thrifting might be your new favorite way to develop your eco-conscious wardrobe and style. If you’re looking to dig even deeper into the slow fashion movement and develop a meaningful hobby along with it, then making your own clothes might be your next adventure. Whether you choose to knit, crochet, or sew, the fibre arts are enduring crafts with centuries of tradition. The tried-and-true techniques have let crafters produce handmade garments that, with the proper care, last generation after generation. You’ll engage with practices and methods invented and used by millions of crafters before you, so it helps you understand the true time and effort needed to produce a single garment, like a sweater or blouse. And, your creation will be unique and distinctively you. An even higher level up? If you have any store-bought, machineknit sweaters that you don’t wear anymore, you can breathe new life and use into them by ripping the seams to separate the panels, then unravelling into yarn—ready to knit into whatever you like. I’ve done this to a few of my old sweaters; it feels like you’re getting away with something! This is slow fashion to its core. However you decide to embrace more slow fashion into your life, the practice of mindful curation both saves the environment and enhances your style.

MON A R C H E S TAT E S E R V IC E S ESTATE MANAGEMENT ISN'T JUST FOR ESTATES ANYMORE

ARTICLE BY LAURIE A. GUZDA

30

C UR B A P P E A L | HO M E S ERVICE S

For generations, having someone oversee your home was considered a luxury reserved for grand estates and the ultra-wealthy. Today, that idea is changing. Modern life has become increasingly complicated. Careers demand more of our time. Travel is more common than ever. Homes are larger, more sophisticated, and filled with technology, mechanical systems, and amenities that require regular attention. As a result, many homeowners are discovering they don't need a full-time estate manager—they simply need someone they trust to keep everything running smoothly. That's where Monarch Estate Services comes in.

Many people assume estate management simply means checking on an empty house while the owners are away. While routine property visits are certainly part of the job, they represent only a small piece of the bigger picture. True estate management is about protecting one of a family's largest investments while removing the countless details that come with homeownership. Think of Monarch as your personal house manager. Whether you're traveling for business, spending winters in a warmer climate, balancing a demanding career, or simply don't want to spend your weekends coordinating contractors, deliveries, maintenance, and home improvement projects, Monarch provides one reliable point of contact who oversees it all. The service appeals to a surprisingly broad range of homeowners. Busy professionals appreciate having someone manage the details while they focus on work and family. Retirees enjoy the freedom to travel without worrying about what's happening back home. Second-home owners gain confidence knowing their property is being monitored regularly. Single homeowners often value having a knowledgeable advocate who can oversee contractors, protect their interests, and ensure projects are completed properly. One of the biggest misconceptions is that hiring Monarch means replacing the trusted vendors homeowners have worked with for years. In fact, the opposite is true. Monarch works alongside existing landscapers, electricians, plumbers, cleaners, and other professionals, coordinating schedules, overseeing projects, and communicating on the homeowner's behalf. When new service providers are needed, Monarch works with carefully vetted, licensed, and insured professionals whenever appropriate. Every property—and every homeowner—is different, which is why every service plan is customized. Some clients need assistance only while they're away for the winter or traveling extensively. Others prefer year-round estate

management that includes routine inspections, seasonal preparation, vendor coordination, maintenance oversight, project management, and proactive monitoring designed to identify small issues before they become expensive repairs. Perhaps that's where Monarch provides its greatest value. Rather than reacting to problems after they occur, Monarch focuses on helping prevent them in the first place. That proactive approach can save homeowners time, stress, scheduling headaches, and unnecessary repair costs while ensuring their home is always cared for with exceptional attention to detail. At the heart of everything Monarch does is trust. Clients entrust the company with access to their homes, their schedules, and often their private lives. That responsibility is never taken lightly. Every relationship is built on professionalism, discretion, integrity, and reliability. Monarch Estate Services offers something once available only to families with full-time household staff: a dedicated professional looking after your home, coordinating every detail, and protecting your investment—without the expense of hiring a full-time employee. That's more than convenience. That's genuine peace of mind.

WHAT IS FS8? It’s Strength Reimagined. We’ve taken three proven disciplines – Pilates, Tone, and Yoga and created one powerful, low-impact workout that redefines how strength is built. FS8 combines next-generation training principles into dynamic, 3-in-1 workouts you’ll absolutely love.

The Connecticut Renaissance Faire is a full-season Renaissance event — dozens of live shows every day across 13 stages, 204 vendors, and 9 themed weekends of nonstop entertainment.
