LIFESTYLE LETTER
Letter from the Editor There is something about November that invites us to slow down. Maybe it’s the earlier sunsets, the rustle of leaves underfoot, or the familiar return of sweaters, soup pots, and gathering around the table. After the rush of autumn begins to settle, November offers a gentle nudge: Look around. Notice what is here. Give thanks. Gratitude can sound like a simple idea, but it asks something meaningful of us. It asks us to pause long enough to recognize the people, places, and moments we might otherwise hurry past—the neighbor who remembers our name, the teacher who sees possibility in a child, the local business owner who knows exactly what we like, or the friend who arrives before we even know how to ask for help. Here in Stamford, we don’t have to look far to find reasons to be grateful. This is a city filled with people who show up: volunteers giving their time, nonprofit leaders strengthening our community, artists helping us see the world differently, entrepreneurs taking chances, and families creating traditions that connect one generation to the next. Our November issue celebrates that spirit. Within these pages, you’ll meet people and organizations whose generosity reminds us that making a difference rarely begins with a grand gesture. More often, it starts with attention—with seeing a need, extending a hand, sharing an opportunity, or simply letting someone know they matter. Of course, gratitude does not require us to pretend that life is perfect. Some years, thankfulness arrives easily. Other years, we have to search for it beneath disappointment, uncertainty, or an overcooked turkey. But perhaps that is when gratitude matters most—not as denial, but as a way of finding the light that remains. This month, I hope we can all take a little more time to notice the good around us—and to become part of it. Thank the person who made your day easier. Support a local business. Invite someone to your table. Make the call you’ve been postponing. Offer your time, your attention, or your kindness. Because gratitude is more than something we feel. It is something we practice, share, and pass along. From all of us at Stamford City Lifestyle, thank you for reading, participating, and helping make this city feel like home. Happy Thanksgiving!

Gratitude Hides In PLAIN SIGHT ARTICLE BY JACQUI JUSTICE, MS, CNS, CDN - FUNCTIONAL NUTRITIONIST
There is a particular kind of blindness that comes with familiarity. The porch light that clicks on every evening without you asking it to. The way you can call up almost any song the instant you think of it, the relief of finally getting into bed after a long day, and my personal favorite - that first sip of coffee in the morning. These things are so constant they stop registering as gifts at all, they just become the background hum of life. November has a way of asking us to notice again. Maybe it’s the cold that sharpens the air and makes you grateful for a warm kitchen. Maybe it is the early dark, which forces a stillness summer never allows. Whatever the reason, this is the month when gratitude stops being an abstract virtue and becomes something more specific: this cozy blanket, this person who makes you laugh, this recipe that stirs up fond memories. I think the small things carry more weight than we give them credit for, because they’re the ones we can actually hold onto. Big gratitude, the kind reserved for milestones and miracles, is real but rare. Small gratitude is available every day, waiting to be
noticed. The neighbor who always waves. The dog who is thrilled by your return even after a ten-minute errand. The fact that your knees still bend, your hands still work, and you woke up at all. One small thing I come back to this month is a quiet inventory before bed. Not a journal, not a ritual, just a moment of noticing what I’d have missed. Not the wedding, not the promotion, just the ordinary thing. The way the light came through the kitchen window at four in the afternoon. A text from an old friend. The smell of wood burning somewhere nearby. What I have noticed, after years of paying attention, is that appreciation isn’t really about the size of the object. It’s about the quality of the looking. A person who can find something to be thankful for in a quiet Tuesday afternoon has access to a kind of abundance that no amount of big events can provide. So this Thanksgiving, let’s be grateful for the obvious things, the turkey, the family, the roof over our heads. But let’s leave a little room for the porch light too. It’s been working hard, quietly, in the background of our whole lives. jacquijustice.com

RIZZ Lounge & Grill A restaurant with a purpose, channeling support to those who need it most in Ukraine. When Steve Goisan opened RIZZ Lounge & Grill in Stamford, he brought more than a new restaurant to the city. He brought a piece of his Ukrainian heritage—and a personal mission to channel the community’s support toward people who need it most. RIZZ has become part of Stamford’s vibrant dining and social scene. Yet behind its cuisine, design and hospitality is a story about entrepreneurship, resilience and giving back. Steve, RIZZ’s owner, is originally from Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine, a city known for its flourishing culinary culture. Although he arrived in the United States 30 years ago, his connection to Ukraine remains deeply rooted. As the war continues, that bond has inspired him to use the restaurant as a way to transform the positive energy of its guests into meaningful help. “If there is one thing people should understand about Ukrainians, it is their resilience,” Steve said. “Their refusal to surrender when their minds and hearts are set on something has been demonstrated throughout history. Ukrainians continue to defend their values and their country’s right to exist, even under unimaginable circumstances.” In creating RIZZ, Steve and his partners drew upon extensive experience across several industries. Their goal was more than a

traditional restaurant. They envisioned a vibrant destination where elevated cuisine, design and social atmosphere come together to create memorable experiences. Even the name reflects that vision. “Rizz,” a slang term for charisma and personal magnetism, captures the restaurant’s energy. Its food, atmosphere, entertainment and service were designed to bring people together to celebrate life’s moments. That commitment extends to the details. RIZZ was built on a philosophy of using quality ingredients and materials, with careful attention given to every choice rather than cutting corners. For Steve, the dish that brings him home is borscht. Its taste immediately evokes childhood memories of Ukraine, family and the wholesome food he grew up eating. Some local Ukrainians visit RIZZ specifically for it. It may appear to be simply a bowl of soup, but for someone separated from home, it can mean far more. The aroma,
Now Open in Stamford! color and first spoonful can transport a person back to a family kitchen and meals shared with loved ones. That is food’s power: it does more than satisfy hunger. It can carry us across the world and let us feel at home again, even if only for one meal. “Family is extremely important to Ukrainians,” Steve said. “We work hard, but we also know how to celebrate life. We gather around a long table, share food, dress beautifully, dance and create lasting memories. We know how to live and truly cherish the moment.” CONTINUED >

“That is food’s power: it does more than satisfy hunger. It can carry us across the world and let us feel at home again, even if only for one meal.”
That philosophy reaches beyond hospitality. Through a charitable initiative tied to designated bottle-service sales, RIZZ commits 30 percent of proceeds to helping Ukrainians affected by war and misfortune. The effort provides financial assistance to families in need, those who have lost loved ones, and people facing extraordinary hardship because of war or serious health circumstances. For Steve, the mission is deeply personal. “Ukraine is where I was born, learned to ride a bike and first went to school,” he said. “Those memories do not fade in a new country or environment; they build you as an individual.” Steve and his partners share a vision: to create a gathering place that celebrates life while using its platform to make a difference. For RIZZ, it is personal. For Stamford, it is a reminder that a restaurant can offer far more than what is on the plate.

ARTICLE BY LAURIE A. GUZDA
Hagan A Coach for a Lifetime
There are people who pass through our lives—and there are people whose voices remain with us long after they are gone. For generations of Stamford students and athletes, that voice belonged to Coach John Hagan. It was the voice that demanded another effort when someone believed he had nothing left. The voice that insisted fundamentals mattered, preparation mattered and character mattered most of all. It could be firm and commanding, but it was also encouraging, humorous and kind. Coach Hagan understood that football was never simply a game. It was a place where young people discovered who they were—and who they might become. His teams won, including Stamford High School’s 1970 state championship team. He earned Coach of the Year honors, coached at Fordham, Columbia and Pace universities, worked as an NFL scout and was inducted into several halls of fame. These achievements secured his place in Connecticut sports history. But his greatest influence cannot be found in a record book. It lives in the former player who said Coach Hagan helped restore his confidence after the death of his father. It lives in the student who turned to him when he needed direction. It lives in the young coach who found encouragement in Hagan’s guidance and the businessman who continued applying lessons first learned on his practice field. Again and again, former players and students remembered not just what Coach Hagan taught them, but how he made them feel: capable, accountable and worthy of his belief.

He saw potential in young people who had not yet discovered it in themselves. He expected them to work hard because he knew they could. He asked them to be responsible to their teammates because he understood that no one succeeds alone. He taught them to stand back up after disappointment, to remain disciplined under pressure and to keep going when quitting would have been easier. Those lessons traveled far beyond the football field. His players carried them into marriages, careers, parenthood and community life. The heartfelt tributes following his death at age 92 reveal the depth of that influence. Decades after graduation, former students still called him “Coach.” They remembered his commanding presence, but also his smile, laughter and generosity. They spoke of a man who was larger than life, yet always willing to listen. A man they respected in their youth and appreciated even more as they grew older. Championship banners eventually fade. Trophies gather dust. The final score of a game becomes a line in a history book. But belief endures. It endures whenever someone finds the courage to persevere because Coach Hagan once taught him not to quit. It endures whenever a former player chooses discipline over excuses, responsibility over blame or teamwork over personal glory. It endures in every life made stronger by his example. John Hagan was twice named Coach of the Year. To those fortunate enough to know him, he was a coach for a lifetime.
“Football was never simply a game. It was a place where young people discovered who they were— and who they might become.”

Flower Again Flowers are precious and fleeting. Flower Again rescues them after their first use, repurposes them in small bouquets and when they're wilted, returns them to the earth in their compost pile. Through the delivery of recycled floral arrangements, Flower Again inspires hope and happiness for those who would welcome an unexpected gift and a lift of spirit. The process: when an event (e.g., wedding) is complete, a Flower Again volunteer picks up the arrangements from the venue and takes them away. From there, the Flower Again team sorts the flowers and creates new individual arrangements in vases for delivery to brighten the day of others.

Red Leash Rescue Red Leash Rescue is a non-profit adult, senior and terminally ill dog rescue. Red Leash Rescue’s mission is to provide refuge, love and care to abandoned, surrendered or discarded dogs in our community. Red Leash Rescue works with animal control facilities across the County, taking in adult and senior dogs that have been overlooked by potential adopters. They work closely with local vets to ensure they are aware of any concerns with the rescue’s health. RLR rescues are then placed in foster care to allow them time to decompress from their experience in the shelter, as well as any loss or neglect they endured prior to arrival in the program. RLR’s long term goal is to complement their program with a multi-use sanctuary for terminally ill dogs and dogs bequeathed to their care that do not have a foster. This home-like setting allows them to provide attention, enrichment and meet medical needs of the dogs in RLR’s care.

GIVING TOGETHER A Community That Shows Up
Every year, City Lifestyle sends checks to hundreds of families in need across the country through our annual Giving Campaign and our non-profit arm, Kingdom Building Foundation. But none of it would be possible without you. We can only help the people we know about, and

that’s where our readers come in. If you know someone quietly struggling, whether it’s a single parent, a senior citizen, or a family facing something they never saw coming, we want to hear their story. Nominations are what make this whole campaign possible.
We provided a chair lift for a teenager paralyzed in a gymnastics accident so she could move freely through her own home again. We helped a child who lost an eye to cancer get the prosthetic because insurance wouldn’t cover it. We covered dental work for a man who needed his smile back just to walk into a job interview. We got heat turned back on for a family who had spent part of the winter without it. We helped a family keep up with bills while a husband and father fought pancreatic cancer, and we helped another family cover medical expenses after the unimaginable loss of a child. These are just a few examples of some of the hundreds of individuals that have been helped through nominations from readers like you. None of it happens without someone noticing first and speaking up. "We don't just send checks," says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle.
“We send a message: You are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.” Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond the holiday season. "This is about community," Matthew says. "We believe we've been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing." Often, the person making the nomination gets just as much out of the experience as the recipient. There's something powerful about being part of the reason someone else's burden got lighter, especially when that need might have otherwise gone unnoticed. The campaign is completely confidential. No names are ever shared or publicized, and nominating someone is as simple as telling us their story. We are looking for those in our communities who fall between the cracks of getting help, and together as a community, we can meet those needs.
Nominations open November 1st and close December 3rd. To nominate someone in your community, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and find the form in our bio, or visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org.
This season, giving starts with you. Let's do it together. Nominate someone in need today.
