Letter from the Publisher

I love August, and here in Stamford, we have the luxury of having the beach to the south and great nature trails to the north, where a swim, run or hike in the morning before it gets too hot is always a great way to start the day. Our cover illustrates the beauty of the pier at Cummings Beach on a summer morning.

Why did summers seem to last so long when we were kids? The summers progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. In this, our third issue, we share with you some hot spots in Stamford where you can hear live outdoor music while sipping on a cold beer or cocktail. We also put the spotlight on Stamford Anti-Aging and Weight Loss Center where they help many people renew their confidence through weight loss and so much more. We love local businesses who give back to our community, and we profile three Stamford companies who have been doing that for years and years. Finally, we look at trends in design, through the eyes of a Stamford resident and PR guru.

So, stay cool, enjoy our August issue, and we will see you in September for our Style issue!

Beer Gardens & Live Music

Let the music cure what “ales” you.

The first known documentation of beer dates from an excavation in Iran around 3400 B.C.Some historians date it a millennia before that. Beer developed in agrarian societies. The Babylonians were notably fond of beer. Egyptian Pharaohs were buried with vats of beer. Pyramid workers were essentially paid in beer. One of the first written recipes for beer comes from a poem, a 3800 year-old ode to brewing that was etched into clay tablets. “Hymn to Ninkasi” celebrates the Sumerian goddess of beer and also conveniently outlines steps for brewing.

The beer brewing process is an art that is composed of seven key steps. First, the brewer must select and prepare the ingredients which typically include malted grains, hops, and yeast. Second, the grains are milled to break open the husks and release the starches within. Third, the grains are then mashed, which involves steeping them in hot water and is used to activate enzymes in the grain which convert the starches into sugars. Fourth, the lautering step follows, where the sugars are separated from the spent grains. Fifth, the wort, or liquid extract, is boiled with

12

hops to add flavor and bitterness. Sixth, the wort is cooled and the yeast is added for fermentation. Finally, the beer is packaged, either in bottles, cans, or kegs, and is ready for consumption. With these seven steps, brewers can create a wide variety of beer styles, each with its own unique flavor and character.

To celebrate this timeless beverage, we invite you to partake in some of Stamford's finest brew offerings along with great live music.

Stamford AntiAging and Weight Loss Center

Both Dr. Pagan and Dr. Paz were motivated to pursue the avenue of health due to personal struggles and experiences. They both struggled with weight issues and were motivated to begin searching for better alternatives to lose weight without compromising their overall well-being. Dr. Paz being the founder, it was a dream for her to create a place where she could not only improve her own health but also help others in their journey towards better health

Dr. Pagan studied emergency room medicine as a physician for many years. Dr. Paz and Dr. Pagan grew an interest in the anti-aging field as they studied leading them to become interested in approaching anti-aging in a holistic manner. While Dr. Pagan focuses strictly on anti-aging, Dr. Paz primarily concentrates on weight loss. However, collaboration from both doctors allows them to address both aspects and provide comprehensive and optimal care to their patients.

The most common reason people come to seek help is to improve overall health and beauty, but mainly weight-loss. They serve both men and women, as well as children. Their approach considers the whole person, taking into account their physical and emotional well-being.

BEAUTY - INSIDE AND OUT

THE THREE EASIEST THINGS PEOPLE CAN DO ON THEIR OWN TO MAINTAIN HEALTH AND BEAUTY ARE:

1) Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated is essential for overall health and maintaining youthful-looking skin.

2) Maintain a balanced diet: Eating nutritious foods that provide the body with essential vitamins and minerals is crucial for both internal and external health.

3) Engage in regular exercise: Physical activity not only helps with weight management but also promotes overall well-being and boosts natural beauty.

The definition of beauty extends beyond physical appearance. They believe that beauty is a combination of physical attributes and the moral and virtuous character of an individual. True beauty comes from within, exhorting qualities such as kindness, compassion, and integrity.

The greatest power each person has for optimum health is the power of choice. By making conscious decisions regarding nutrition, exercise, self-care, and seeking professional guidance when needed, people can control their health journey. Consider your emotional well-being alongside physical health, recognizing the importance of both in achieving weight loss and overall wellness. Emotional well-being is very important to achieve a successful weight-loss

The collaboration of Dr. Paz and Dr. Pagan allows them to provide a unique blend of anti-aging and weight loss services, addressing the specific needs and goals of each patient. Additionally, their emphasis on holistic well-being sets them apart, as true beauty and optimal health are achieved by nurturing both the body and the mind.

What they love most about what they do is the opportunity to help individuals improve their self-esteem and achieve their best selves. Being able to make a positive impact on their lives and see their confidence grow is truly fulfilling.

MR. STAMFORD BRINGS HEYSTAMFORD! FOOD FESTIVAL TO MILL RIVER PARK

Born and raised on the streets of Stamford, PJ knows a thing or two about “roughing it”. Having started work at an early age as a bagger at Grade-A and consequently a cashier at the A&P, he knew about the “hard Life”. He attended private school since the 7th grade through high school and then went on to community college. Soon he was to transform his reputation as “street-wise leader” and began a career in retail as Assistant Store Manager of Abercrombie and Fitch.

From Abercrombie and Fitch, he went on to work for Tommy Hilfiger, USA, however, he was not content with what he was doing, and needed more. He took a giant step towards his life long dream in broadcasting. Starting out as an intern on the WPLJ drive-time powerhouse, the Rocky Allen Showgram,

PJ also worked as a barista & assistant manager at the (then) largest Starbucks in Fairfield County. From there he was soon introduced to the world of conference and tradeshows at Mecklermedia.

PJ has worked for some of the top conference and tradeshows in various industries. He worked as a Conference Program Manager with such business luminaries as Steve Case (then with AOL), Larry Ellison (Oracle), Linus Torvolds (Linux Creator), Martin Cooper (Inventor of the Cell Phone) and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban among many others.

Since starting HeyStamford! in 2011, he has affectionately become known as Mr. Stamford . His collection of stunning images of the many people and events he's covered could fill volumes. His aerial shots are fantastic.

CONTINUED > 25 CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/STAMFORDCT AUGUST 2023

PJ’s passion for the city is fueled by his family’s history in the area (dating back to 1879).  His grandfather, the late J. Walter Kennedy, served as Mayor of Stamford (before retiring to become commissioner of the NBA), his father, Bob Kennedy, served as Sports Editor of the Stamford Advocate for over 30 years & his mother has been an educator & volunteer in the Stamford school system for over 35 years. PJ is not only a native, he is Stamford royalty.  PJ lives in Stamford where he is madly in love with his wife Sandy, and two children, PJ Jr. & Grace. PJ is a family man, managing to spend quality time with his family as well as show up at every event. (Giving more credence to the theory that there is more than one of him.) And, he has a full time job.

He also has a great sense of humor. In the craziness of 2020, he created a Stamford Coloring/Activity Book for adults: Introducing the first ever Hey Stamford! Adult Activity Book! 10+ pages of activities, including a maze, word find, and coloring pages featuring some of our hometown friends!

Backyard Chickens

Chickens have become increasingly popular as pets in both suburban and urban areas during the last 20 years. Backyard chickens may seem to be an unsuspecting animal to keep as a pet, but the tried and true egg producers are back in fashion as food costs are soaring and families are looking for more food independence in light of recent supply chain shortages.

There’s a lot to like about raising chickens in your backyard. Surprisingly, chickens are relatively low-maintenance. And bonus—unlike dogs, they don’t need to be bathed or groomed, and they don’t shed on your clothes or require training. Could backyard chickens be the perfect pet/producer to add to your home?

Things to Consider Before Getting Chickens:

First, check local town ordinances to ensure that keeping chickens is even allowed in your neighborhood or if there is a limit to the number of chickens you can keep at once.

Make sure you have the space for a henhouse or a full-size chicken coop. It has to hold a feeder and water containers, a roosting area, and a nest box for every three hens. A proper coop should be large enough that you can stand in it to gather eggs and shovel manure comfortably, but a simple henhouse can be quite a bit smaller. Plus, any housing must be sturdy enough to keep your chickens safe from all the predators out there. Gorgeous coops are aplenty on places like Pinterest if you’re building your own, but many pre-made options are available through various farm supply stores as well.

Chickens need food and water daily. Feed is about $20 per 50-pound bag, but prices vary depending on your location and the quality of the feed. How long a bag lasts depends on the number of chickens you have.

Hens will lay eggs through spring and summer and into the fall, as long as they have 12 to 14 hours of daylight. Expect to collect eggs daily, or even twice a day.

Everything you need to get started on your backyard coop.
HOME UPDATE | EDUCATION 28

Backyard Chicken Q&A:

HOW MANY CHICKENS SHOULD I KEEP?

Chickens are sociable creatures, so plan to keep three to six birds at least. With this amount, you’ll always have a steady supply of eggs, since an adult hen lays about two eggs every three days, on average. Local ordinances also dictate how many chickens one household can keep.

HOW MUCH DOES KEEPING CHICKENS COST?

All of this costs money, of course. The materials to build and furnish a coop and a 20 x 5-foot run—including wood, fencing, and hardware—are going to set you back at least $300. If you can’t do this work yourself, you’ll also be buying skilled labor.

Overall, expect to spend between $500 and $700 when getting started depending on the size of your flock, coop and run. For prefabricated coops, expect to pay $600 or more.

WHAT KIND OF SHELTER DO THEY NEED?

Chickens need to have an enclosed coop that provides adequate space, protection from the elements and predators, and good ventilation. A modified shed, barn, or stable with an outdoor run is a good option for a coop. The outdoor run should be fully enclosed if you have predators like hawks or owls nearby. Ideally, coops are slightly elevated off the ground to prevent flooding and have windows on each side, enough nest boxes to allow several chickens to nest simultaneously, outlets for lighting, fans if they’re needed, air inlets or ventilation holes on the roof, and a concrete floor treated with a pet-safe waterproof coating that allows for easy cleaning and drainage.

Want to go the fancy route?

Search Pinterest for “chicken coop building plans” if you’re building your own, or consider going the luxury route with a gorgeous custom-built coop from a company like CutestCoops.com.

WHEN DO CHICKENS START LAYING EGGS?

Most hens will start laying eggs when they’re about 18 to 20 weeks old, although it may take more time for them to reach their peak output. Often, the first eggs are laid irregularly or are smaller or oddly shaped when compared with a typical egg. This is nothing to worry about! Once a cycle is established, most hens will lay one egg per day.

Where Nature and Technology Meet

ORGANIZING AND SHOWCASING A WARDROBE WITH ORNARE

The juxtaposition of technology with nature is one of the hottest design trends at the moment. Ornare designs incorporate soft neutral colors and shapes while mixing fabric, leather, wood, glass, lighting, and metal into well-designed spaces in the home. The brand is known for quality custom cabinetry and wall systems throughout Brazil, the United States, and Dubai. Ornare products are also certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Pictured here is the new Timeless collection that launched earlier year. A few of my favorite details are the round mirror, ventilated wood doors, and clear dividers for easy storage. Design should be form and function, enhancing everyday life.
