Great Style Is The Smile It Brings to You

Dear Reader, Fashion is what you buy, Style is what you do with it. The best fashion advice that I like to live by is that it takes three pieces to make a complete outfit. This can be difficult in 100 degree weather, where we are trying to eliminate as many layers as possible. My go-to is usually a scarf, belt, handbag or even interesting shoes. Whatever your style choice, it is best to own it and feel comfortable in what you are wearing. What you wear is a reflection of you, just like your home’s style. We have several articles this month to help inspire your style and put a smile on your face. For your home we have two articles: “Elevate Your Home Affordably" and “The Artless Epidemic". For your personal esthetic we have two articles as well, “Style Has No Expiration Date” and Bryndy from Empire Wax gives expert advice that will ease you through the process of waxing your brow. Whether you are dressing up your home or dressing up your outf it, learning what your st yle preferences are will help you live in a more conf ident, comfortable way. In the immortal words of Annie the musical, “You are never fully dressed without a smile.” So dress up with your most valuable asset, it is the one accessory everyone notices.

Bryndy Hughes
Practical Advice for a First Time Waxer or a Seasoned Pro
FRESH WAX, FRESH CONFIDENCE ARTICLE BY RACHEL KIDMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Whether you have two caterpillars fighting it out on your brow or thinning brows that need a little TLC, the right care and expertise is important. Before walking into the salon for any kind of waxing appointment, there are a few things you ought to know. Bryndy Hughes, owner of Empire Body Wax, guides us through the processes of body waxing from pre-care to aftercare, giving you the best care for the outcome you desire.
WHAT PRE-CARE ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE SOMEONE CONSIDERING WAXING?
Hydration is key. For those who are worried about the pain factor, preparation begins with being properly hydrated, and cutting caffeine intake for the 24 hours before is also a plus. Gentle exfoliation and clean, no-lotion skin will improve the pull process. Also, taking a Tylenol thirty minutes prior can ease some pain and discomfort. Bryndy also recommends not plucking or shaving for the two weeks before you wax. “The first time is always the most uncomfortable, however with consistent visits you will find it quick and easy.”
16
EXP E RT H E LP | BEAUTY
WHAT AFTERCARE SHOULD I BE DOING?
No pools or hot tubs for 24 hours, you don’t want to introduce new bacteria to the skin. Then just keep the area clean for three to four days after.
WHAT SHOULD I KEEP IN MIND BETWEEN WAXING’S?
It takes three to four waxes to get all your hair on the same growth cycle. The more you wax, the cleaner your pulls will be. Review the products that you use on a regular basis, retinol and acne products have a tendency to thin our skin. If you absolutely can’t do without these products, limit the use one week prior to waxing.
FOR SOMEONE NEW TO WAXING, WHAT DO YOU THINK PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW? “Eyebrows are my favorite because they shape our face. Remember your face isn’t the same on each side; your eyebrows are (siblings) not twins.” Know what you are looking for when waxing: a cleanup, a reshape or a balance of your face. Think of your eyebrows like they are the frame of a masterpiece.

I don’t know about you, but when I have time to spend ten minutes scrolling through local homes on Zillow, two very startling things stand out: open toilet seats and a surprising number of blank walls. But it’s not just Zillow. My husband and I own Urban Renewal in downtown St. George, and over the years I’ve also noticed this in photos of customers’ homes, on deliveries, and while helping people furnish and decorate their spaces. What is the reason for this epidemic of blank, artless walls? I personally don’t think it’s for a lack of being inspired by art - most everyone enjoys museums, books, or a favorite artist--yet many fail to live with it in their homes even though living with art is one of the best ways to connect us to our own spaces. More than almost anything else, it very specifically reflects our interests and our personalities. In a world driven by the newest color schemes, Instagram trends and what’s “in” or “out,” our homes need more of us and less of everyone else. My appreciation for what art can do for a home started early on in life. At age 18, I found an Egon Schiele print at a framing shop during my lunch break one day. Between the cost of the print and the framing, it consumed my entire paycheck. I hung it up in my first apartment and suddenly it felt like home. This taught me the difference

between appreciating art and actually living with it. That single print didn’t decorate the whole apartment, but it changed how the apartment made me feel. So why do so many walls stay empty? I think it comes down to three things: assuming that art is out of our budget, not knowing where to find artwork we connect with, or simply being overwhelmed and not knowing where to begin. In buying artwork to stock in our store, we struggled to find affordable pieces that felt original and personal rather than mass-produced and ultimately forgettable. That frustration eventually led us to create our own art line called You Be Are, with one simple goal: make meaningful, high-quality artwork more accessible. If you’re staring at a blank wall in your home and don’t know where to start, just start. Don’t think about decorating. Don’t think about matching art to your sofa. Start by buying pieces you find interesting - especially one someone else might find weird. Art is personal. Don’t expect your neighbors to like it. Choose it because you love it, not because it fits a trend. Choose it because it makes you stop, look again, and feel something. When I’m in our store and I watch someone flip through our prints, I hope they’re finding more than something to hang on a wall. I hope they’re finding the art piece that makes them feel connected to their home and inspires them to keep searching for more. Because once you start living with personally selected works of art, it’s hard to imagine living without it. And if they do find that piece of art that calls to them, I feel proud that it will not cost them their entire paycheck. And maybe, the next time you are scrolling Zillow, there will be a few less blank walls - and a few more homes that reflect the people who live there.

As a women’s clothing buyer, I have the privilege of interacting with women of all ages on a daily basis. Many come in and leave with clothing they love and know they will wear without ever asking for an outside opinion. However, there are still many who walk out of the fitting room knowing they love what they are wearing and still ask, “Am I too old to wear this?” Every
time someone asks me that, my answer is almost always the same: How do you feel wearing it? Do you love what you see when you look in the mirror? Do you feel beautiful? Do you feel confident? If the answer is yes, then that’s your answer. As time passes, many women start to believe there are rules about what they can and can’t wear once they reach CONTINUED >

a certain age. They begin questioning sleeve lengths, hemlines, jeans, colors, and shoesall while hoping the styles they are loving are “age appropriate.” I believe fashion should never be about trying to fit into someone else’s expectations. It should be about expressing who YOU are. The truth is, confidence is what people notice first. A woman who feels good in what she’s wearing carries herself differently. Her confidence is displayed in her body language, her facial expressions and even the way she walks. She isn’t having to worry about adjusting her clothes or about what others are thinking. That is what makes an outfit beautiful and if we need to say it again, “age appropriate.” Now, that doesn’t mean every trend is for everyone-and that’s okay. We all have different personalities, lifestyles and preferences. The goal isn’t to wear every trend that comes along. It’s to find the styles that make you feel like the very best version of yourself. If that’s a pair of trendy wide-leg jeans, wear them. If it’s a classic white button-up and denim, wear that. If it’s bright colors, bold prints, patterned sneakers, dresses, or a vintage leather jacket, wear those too. There is no age limit on feeling beautiful. The next time you’re tempted to ask, “Am I too old for this?” try asking yourself a different question instead: “Do I feel beautiful in it?” Because when you feel beautiful, it shows. So wear the dress. Buy the jeans. Try the jacket you’ve been eyeing. Life is too short to worry about whether someone else thinks your outfit is “too young.” The only opinion that truly matters is the one looking back at you in the mirror.

EASY DESIGN TIPS FOR CREATING A CUSTOMIZED HOME THAT IS PRACTICAL WITHOUT OVERSPENDING ARTICLE BY MALEAH MAZIARZ OF @HOMEWITHMALEAH PHOTOGRAPHY BY CONTRIBUTED

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR INSPIRATION.
I am a wife, a mom of three children, and the creator behind @homewithmaleah on Instagram. After spending 13 years as a photographer, I moved to St. George and poured all of my creativity into transforming our basic builder-grade home. I have always loved decorating, design, and DIY, but having a very frugal husband has taught me how to create high-end spaces without the high-end budget. Today, I love to share affordable finds, simple projects, and decorating ideas to help wives and moms create homes they truly love living in. My ultimate goal is simple: to show that beautiful, custom-looking and custom-feeling homes are possible for everyone and here’s how anyone can do it!
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO BEAUTIFUL ST. GEORGE?
We were drawn here by the sunshine, warm weather, and slower pace of life. Growing up in California, St. George reminded me of home. We really wanted more time outside together as a family and a community that felt welcoming. It has been the perfect place to put down roots.
HOW CAN WE CREATE OUR PERFECT, ORGANIZED HOME?
I don’t believe anyone actually has a perfectly organized home, especially if you have kids! Instead, let’s focus on creating systems that work for your family. I love using baskets, bins, cabinets, and hidden storage so everything has a place while still looking beautiful. Organization should make life easier, not make your home feel like a museum.
WHAT THINGS CAN WE DO TO MAKE OUR HOMES LOOK MORE CUSTOMIZED?
The easiest upgrades are often the most affordable. Paint adds instant character, while new lighting, mirrors, faucets, and cabinet hardware make builder-grade homes feel much more custom. I also love designing each room around the person who uses it, so every space feels intentional and very personal. CONTINUED >

WHERE CAN WE SHOP FOR SPECIAL ITEMS THAT ENHANCE OUR STYLE?
I love mixing affordable items from retailers like Target, Walmart, Amazon, H&M Home, Zara Home, HomeGoods, and Hobby Lobby with fun and unique vintage finds. The best homes combine old and new pieces to create a collected look that’s personal instead of trendy or common.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST LIFE HACK?
Don’t wait for your dream home, create it right where you are. Small changes like paint, wallpaper, lighting, styling and simple DIY projects can completely transform how your home feels without a major renovation.
“Organization should make life easier, not make your home feel like a museum.”
WHAT ARE SOME SIMPLE SWAPS WE CAN MAKE?
My favorite budget-friendly upgrade right now is framing builder-grade mirrors with peel-and-stick molding. It gives the mirror a custom look for a fraction of the cost. I also love changing cabinet hardware and replacing recessed lights with pendants or flush mounts. Those three projects make a huge impact while staying affordable. I love family-style meals such as a crab boil this time of year. The food is the star of the show and a vital part of the tablescape – decor optional! Additional elements included here are a large paper-sail, light blue taper candles, a few large flowers, and heavy white rope as nautical accents. You can also use other elements such as large seashells, coral or seaglass. Use whatever you have on hand that nods to the sea.

Fill a large stock pot halfway with cold water. Season with lemon peels, bay leaves, black pepper, red pepper flakes, Old Bay Seasoning, and garlic powder. Bring to a boil and add crab legs, sausage, potatoes, and corn until cooked. Strain water and serve on a large galvanized tray, newspaper or parchment paper – enjoy your meal with guests, family style! Give each guest a bowl of garlic butter for dipping as well as lemons for squeezing (wrapped in cheesecloth and tied with twine to avoid seeds). Include special beverages and desserts such as a tiered lemon cake or frozen treat to beat the heat. For full instructions visit the blog at silvertoothhome.com/blog/crabboil. Enjoy!
