EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
To the good men in our lives . . .
Holly Infante | holly.infante@citylifestyle.com
An inspirational man has the extraordinary power and privilege of modeling and mentoring young people to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a grandfather, a coach, a brother, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example may make a lasting impact on those watching. We may all think of a man in our life who has had a positive influence on us at one time or another. Whether it is someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, or someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but who inspires us by their greatness. We recognize the impact these role models have in our lives. I am reflecting on the life of my good father, Jacob Andrus Jensen, who sacrificed much for his family, and who was generous, some say to a fault. Although he passed from mortality from acute leukemia and has been gone for many years, I see him still in my mind’s eye dancing with my mother, fishing Idaho streams and singing in his mellifluous voice at weddings. I hear him whistling as he irrigated his crops. He had a strong work ethic and wanted nothing more than for his posterity to live lives worthy of emulation. I think of my good husband, Patrick, who came into my life when I was a young child, and how our paths crossed many times through our early years. His love of beauty, his sense of humor and his passion for learning have convinced me our relationship is no coincidence. He urged me to develop my talents and use my creativity to edify others. Some of my cherished memories are of our singing together or my attending his concerts when he participated in barbershop choruses through the Barbershop Harmony Society. In addition, I am forever grateful for the lives of my four good brothers, one now deceased, who are my best friends. They are caring husbands and fathers and continue to model good lives to many in their communities. May the men in our lives know of our admiration for them, and may we thank them often for their positive influence. To these men, we dedicate this issue.

Texas Caviar:
T HE P ERF EC T COMP L EMEN T T O YOUR FAT HER'S DAY B A RBECUE
A TEXAN WITH SOUTHERN UTAH CONNECTIONS SHARES A FAVORITE FAMILY RECIPE THAT'S ALWAYS A HIT ARTICLE BY MARK ABERNATHY PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK ABERNATHY PICTURES This Texas recipe is credited to Helen Corbitt—who left her native New York to teach at University of Texas at Austin in the 1930s and later became head chef for the famed Driskill Hotel and Neimann Marcus. Helen’s 1940 recipe was inspired when she was tasked with creating a dish entirely from Texas ingredients. Southern tradition says black-eyed peas eaten the first day of the New Year guarantees good luck for the next 364 days. Hers was an effort to dress up the pesky legume.
T E X A S C AV I A R INGREDIENTS • ½ red onion, chopped • 1 bunch green onion, chopped • 1 bell pepper, any colors, chopped • 2 Jalapeño peppers, deseeded and chopped • 1 Serrano pepper, finely chopped (seeded optional) • 5 cloves garlic, minced and chopped • 2 cups fresh corn • 2 cups cherry tomatoes, quartered • 15-ounce can black beans, drained • 15-ounce can black-eyed peas, drained • 1 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped • ½ teaspoon grated coriander • 8 ounces zesty Italian dressing DIRECTIONS 1. Mix all and refrigerate for two hours. 2. Serve with tortilla chips. Mark Abernathy was born in San Francisco and has lived in Hong Kong, Taiwan, New York City, Boston and now Austin, where he teaches music and engages in photography. In his spare time, he is an avid home chef.

Tyler Wilkinson, managing partner, chief financial officer and chief compliance officer for Soltis Investment Advisors
Courage to Open New Doors Tyler Wilkinson reflects on career, family and faith ARTICLE BY HOLLY INFANTE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHER SWAN; WILKINSON FAMILY
Since starting his first newspaper route for the St. George Spectrum at age five, Tyler Wilkinson has not looked back. Today, he serves as managing partner, chief financial officer and chief compliance officer for locally owned Soltis Investment Advisors, a national investment advisory firm with over $6 billion in assets under managed advisement. Founded by entrepreneurs, Lon Henderson, Hal Anderson and the late Hyrum Smith in 1993, the company started out with a key differentiator—they are a “fee-only” firm.
16
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FINANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S
“There are a lot of actual and potential conflicts of interest in the financial industry,” explains Tyler. “I’m grateful that from the beginning, Soltis chose to be a fiduciary, which requires putting client interests first. Most in our industry follow a suitability standard but stop short of a fiduciary responsibility.” Because earnings come through client fees and not from any investment product the company recommends, the Soltis business model removes potential investment bias—in the client’s favor. As evidenced by the company’s growth, the model works.

Soltis has garnered industry recognition from Barrons, the Financial Times and PLANADVISERS magazine, and has attracted individual and institutional clients such as Norwegian Cruise Line, Lifetime Products, Associated Food Stores and United Way. Tyler was offered an entry-level, investment analyst position at the outset, becoming only the fourth employee to join the firm. The company now has 55 employees from Seattle to Boston, and following successive promotions, Tyler is grateful to have risen to his current leadership positions. And unless you are a long-time St. George resident, you might not know that this finance executive—and married father of five—is also a quadriplegic. Tyler’s career with Soltis represents a major pivot from his trajectory in the early 1990s as a youth sports sensation with a probable professional career with the National Football League or Major League Baseball. To his competitors, Tyler was the athlete who could not be beat, and to college recruiters, he was the ultimate pick. With multiple scholarship offers, Tyler was well on his way to achieving his dream. Then, on February 16, 1991, the community was shocked by news that Tyler became paralyzed from the neck down following an automobile accident caused by drowsy driving. The chronicle of his extensive hospitalization and rehabilitation is captured in the documentary film, “Tyler: A Real Hero,” produced in 1994 and narrated by NFL Hall of Fame quarterback, Steve Young. At a defining moment that would shape his new reality, Tyler chose faith, family, friendship and fortitude over fear, doubt, self-pity and defeat. For Tyler, faith and family are tightly intertwined. Devout in their faith, Tyler remembers from childhood his father sacrificing “a lot of time to service,” with his mother lending her support. Quoting from the poem, “I’d Rather See a Sermon,” by Edgar A. Guest, Tyler says his father is the man who lives the sermon. Tyler and Jennifer on their wedding day in 1994

“I’ve learned that doors open up to you when you say ‘yes’ and get outside of your comfort zone. As I have said ‘yes’ to opportunities, the doors have opened up even more.”
“My father always put the Lord first, yet we didn’t feel like we were second,” Tyler recalls. Though they experienced the friction that is common between parents and teens, he confides, “I always knew I could go to my dad and get really good counsel.” Tyler says he was shaped by the family culture his parents established of “we can do it” and “give your best effort.” During a three-year period following his accident and while he was attending school, his parents, Randy and Linda Wilkinson, assisted every morning to help get him ready and out the door. The two biggest influences he credits during his young life are his two older brothers, Troy and Travis. “I wanted to impress them,” Tyler admits. “They were always encouraging me and instilled in me a belief about my potential when they said, ‘This kid’s going to go places!’”

“Everybody is going through challenges, through hard things—hopefully we can recognize that and be the person who is encouraging others. We need more positivity and optimism ... Let’s be the ones passing it on.” When Tyler’s big goal of professional sports was rendered impossible, he set out for what he calls his “bigger goals”—marrying the right person, starting a family, achieving a fulfilling career and giving back to his community. In 1994, his devoted girlfriend, Jennifer Orton, became his wife and caregiver. Tyler and Jennifer both descend from southern Utah’s early pioneering families, and as evidence by 28 years of marriage, they have the tenacity to get through anything. Juggling family demands with five children ages 11 to 23, which includes a set of twins, they live intentionally, striving for gratitude and a healthy sense of humor to see them through the inevitable, day-to-day challenges. On a given workday, Tyler starts his morning as early as 4:30 a.m. to get ready for the day. In Tyler’s off hours, the pair regularly speak together to youth groups and other forums, sharing their message of encouragement to accept life’s challenges and overcome hard things. Tyler’s first speaking engagement after the accident was at his high school commencement—and he was apprehensive. He later realized that sharing his story was one way that he could give back, and, like his father, he is very generous with his time. “I’ve learned that doors open up to you when you say yes and get outside of your comfort zone. As I have said yes to opportunities, the doors have opened up even more,” Tyler says. The success Tyler and Jennifer have obtained together comes in part from the acknowledgement that as people, we all need each other. “Lots of people tell me I am an inspiration, and I have received constant encouragement because one of my challenges is very visible. All the time, people are building me up, and in some ways, I feel I have an unfair advantage,” Tyler shares. “Everybody is going through challenges, through hard things—hopefully we can recognize that and be the person who is encouraging others. We need more positivity and optimism.” As he concludes, Tyler invites, “Let’s be the ones passing it on.” JUNE 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / STG E O R G E

The Need for Speed ARTICLE BY CHERYL MCCOLLUM | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF TDS
Why 1Gig internet is the way to go
24
EXP E RT H E LP | HOM E SE RVI CE S
TDS has invested $150 million to boost residential and business network speed
We’ve all experienced it—the dreaded internet lag—at the least convenient time. Whether it is an important video conference with a client or just a relaxing movie night with family or friends, the internet must not fail. To deliver fail-safe internet speed, locally operated TDS Telecom is offering 1 gigabyte or 1Gig internet, which is equivalent to a download speed of 1,000 megabits per second. That’s fast! “The best thing about 1Gig internet is no matter how many people in your home are using the internet at the same time, no matter how many devices are connected, and no matter what time it is, 1Gig should provide all the bandwidth your home needs,” says TDS Senior Manager of Product Management, Casey Thompson. “No more lagging connections or slow speeds because 1Gig is so much faster.” Households with 1Gig are particularly pleased with how many more entertainment options they suddenly have available. “1Gig provides the best online experience for streaming 4K movies and videos, gaming and downloading multiple large files simultaneously,” Casey continues. “It really works wonders for families with multiple users at home. Because with 1Gig, there’s no more worrying about network issues while working and while the kids are on the Xbox or streaming their favorite movie. In other words, 1Gig gives you flexibility and peace of mind.”
1GIG IS THE FUTURE The pandemic has taught us that reliable, high-speed internet is a necessity. With more people working from
home and going to school online, many TDS customers have found faster speeds are necessary to download large office files, attend meetings or classes over video conferencing, and when accessing the large variety of platforms from work and school. 1Gig internet ensures everyone has ample bandwidth. The evolution of 1Gig came about for residential and business customers after TDS invested more than $150 million in its Utah network. With 1Gig internet, Casey notes a two-hour, 4K movie will download in under a minute. “There’s no more dragging or lagging in video chats and no spinning wheels while you wait to download videos, photos or files,” he assures. With 1Gig, customers will also be prepared to meet emerging media demands, such as immersive media like virtual reality video games or telehealth appointments where you manage your clinical appointments via a virtual reality platform.
NEW-AGE, DIGITAL TV IS AVAILABLE, TOO For TV viewers, TDS also offers an integrated television option called TDS TV+ that brings together your live, recorded and streaming options all in one place. TDS TV+ is an intuitive and smart cloud-based digital video recorder or DVR. Customers can choose from three levels of DVR storage capacity and can record 10 shows simultaneously. TDS aims to be your reliable choice for internet, all-digital TV services and crystal-clear phone options. To learn more about TDS services, call 844.848.9091 or go to HelloTDS.com.

The violent aluminum ping gives a hint of what comes next—a soaring line drive, curling into the right-center field gap, over the heads of two pursuing outfielders. The baseball landed three hops from the fence, traveling farther than the batter’s father would have thought possible. That was my son, David Cordero Jr., a 14-year-old freshman who plays baseball for Desert Hills. It was a clear April day, and the collision of ball and bat brought back memories to a time when I launched a pitch farther than my dad would have thought possible. That had been a cloudy Saturday morning 26 years ago, the ball exploding off my bat and somehow striking the base of the left-center field fence. A senior in high school and just 160 pounds, it is doubtful I ever hit a ball within 50 feet of that distance before or since. It was a special feeling. That year, my dad worked two hours away from town. Consequently, he missed a lot of my games. Prior to that season, I could count on one hand the number of games he missed. At various times, he helped coach my teams or keep the scorebook. He loved watching me play. My dad made it home on the weekends and witnessed—on that particular day—what was easily my longest hit. I can distinctly remember my dad yelling, “All right, David!” Now I’m a dad, and look what has happened. I’ve coached my son’s teams many times and have been the scorekeeper quite often. I love watching my son play. I also love when my dad gets to watch his grandson play. Before this year my dad lived 450 miles away. Now he’s two miles away, and he can watch David Jr. all the time. And while my indelible moment resides only in the memory of a few, my son’s hit was recorded. I have watched it quite often. The timing perfect. Hands in. Head down. Driving through the pitch. He took off immediately and didn’t stop until he slid into third with a booming triple and a cascading wave of confidence. What makes it even better: If I turn the sound up, I can hear the excitement in my dad’s voice as he cheers him on.

Paul and Faith Havick enjoy a quiet Saturday morning relaxing in their backyard gardens
Paul and Faith Havick think of themselves as “citizens of the world.” Before their post-retirement move to St. George, the pair’s corporate careers took them to every corner of the globe. Constant travel presented an ongoing quandary: How to keep their household safe and functional during extended absences. “We asked a friend to start the cars while we were gone, and we came home to two dead batteries,” Paul recalls. That experience proved to be the inspiration for what is now Peace of Mind Homewatch Services, a Washington Citybased firm providing home watch services for second homes, vacation homes, winter homes—or any home whose owners happen to be away for any length of time.

The Havicks bring a rich resume to their new venture: Paul spent more than 20 years in sales and marketing for a major electronics firm, while Faith logged nearly 25 years in HR for an international telecom leader. Following multiple stints abroad, the couple settled in Seattle, then relocated to St. George in 2011. Retirement was their goal. But like many high-energy, high-achieving couples, neither was inclined to remain idle for long. Paul began volunteering at Switchpoint Thrift Store; he is now assistant manager of the organization’s busy food pantry. “My mom ran a ministry that was a food pantry, so it’s kind of in the family,” notes Paul, an IRONMAN veteran who also serves on the board of the Southern Utah Triathlon Club. Faith—whose degree is in education—became a reading specialist, assisting students in grades 1-8. In their “spare” time, the pair bought an RV and began exploring the country. Says Paul, “After COVID hit, we did 15,000 miles in the RV. When we couldn’t find anyone to watch our house while we were gone, it hit us: We should start a company that would do just that.” The launch of Peace of Mind Homewatch now affords the Havicks the flexibility to continue traveling when desired, while keeping tabs on clients’ homes through their local inspection teams. Since both are active in Calvary Chapel in Bloomington, and host guests at the church’s lodge and RV park in northern Utah, it’s the ideal business model for the couple—and for local homeowners. “We want people to know that we’re trustworthy,” Paul says. “We will treat their homes exactly as we treat ours.” For more information, visit peaceofmindhw.com.

BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL FAT H E R ’ S DAY G I F T ARTICLE BY HOLLY INFANTE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CUSTOM INSTALLATION AND DESIGN
How one Utah company can transform your Father’s Day and every day
Traditional neckties, power tools, grill accessories, sporting gear and the latest tech gadgets will always have their place on Father’s Day. This year, though, consider investing in something more—something techy, functional—and customized just for him. For ideas, look no further than Mark Hicken of Hurricanebased Custom Installation and Design. Founded in 1993, this local business has been integrating home and technology systems to provide affordable home automation and customization that delivers luxury and convenience. “It’s personally satisfying to help fulfill our client’s vision in designing and installing the latest smart home technology,” Mark mentions. “This includes home audiovideo, security and lighting systems,” he adds. Custom Installation and Design was an early entrant into the home automation and audio-visual services industry, and the company ranks as the most experienced audio-visual company in southern Utah. The company is licensed, and serves customers in Utah, Idaho, California, Nevada, Wyoming—and even the Aloha state! Mark and his crew can help with anything from the small and simple to the high-end, from motorized window shades and lighting upgrades to a fully automated home or custom home-theater system. Their business approach is one of really getting to know each client, to know them personally and understand their needs and interests. Next, they align client input with the best and the latest technology to create the “dream solution,” as Mark calls it. Before the team starts your project, they make sure you love what they have planned for you and your home.

“Our goal is to provide customers with superior products and craftsmanship, then deliver the best possible, mind-blowing experience,” Mark says. When the installation is complete, that’s not the end. Mark’s philosophy is all about friendship and dependability. “We pride ourselves in the friendships we create with our clients, and our team will always be there to ensure 100% satisfaction and service.” For your business needs, Mark’s team offers nearly three decades of commercial experience to help you with a range of office automation projects. Commonly requested services include structured wiring, networking, wireless signal boosting, conference room automation, video systems, background audio streaming, access control, security and surveillance systems. Contact the Custom Installation and Design team at 435.635.0255 or online at cidsystems.com.
CLIENT TESTIMONIAL: “In the past I have used other AV companies, but since working with Mark and Custom Installation Design, I have never looked back. The first project was my personal home. Mark and his team took the time to explain the options and were detailed and thorough in their installation. I have continued to use CID in my business developments. Furthermore, I have emulated Mark’s customer care and customer service in my business.” – Mathew Gardner, Gardner Homes of Utah and Idaho

Legendary Entertainer and Music Icon, Donny Osmond, Live from Las Vegas A DRAMATIC FUSION OF VINTAGE AND NEW RELEASES IN AN UNPRECEDENTED SOLO RESIDENCY

Donny at his "second home" on the Las Vegas stage
Fun, sun and music are in order as Las Vegas celebrates the return of one of its favorite native sons, Donny Osmond. He has performed here at various times since his youth, either with his brothers, as a guest with other singers, with sister Marie or with his solo act. I recently attended his new show as their guest, and it did not disappoint! The show comes after the release of his 65th album, “Start Again,” and he performs at least three of his new songs. The enthusiastic crowd enjoys his new music, but most are waiting to hear the older songs that made them fans in the first place—songs like “Go Away Little Girl,” “One Bad Apple” and “Puppy Love”— that he performed as a teen idol in the 70s. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the release of “Puppy Love,” and in a special segment of the show, Donny sings about and discusses how that CONTINUED >

Throughout his illustrious career, Donny has earned 33 gold records, selling more than 100 million albums and becoming a worldwide music legend. Donny’s milestone 65th release, “Start Again,” debuted worldwide on Sept. 10, 2021. The album is inspired by his own unique career journey of constant reinvention over the course of his six decades as a world-recognized performer.
song helped create a phenomenon called “Osmondmania,” here in the United States and abroad, especially in England. Donny loves to entertain, and that’s why at age 64, he is back on stage to continue his connection with his fans. The show features bits and pieces from every decade since the 60s, when he first appeared on the Andy Williams show at age five. Presented in what he calls a “rap-ography” of his career, he raps the 10-minute story choreographed with video displays. Included with the good are mentions of the dark times and how he pulled himself up and started again in a new direction. He’s out of breath at the finish! The show also includes an “improv” session where he asks for audience requests, then sings portions of those songs with the band trying to keep up. This session makes every show unique. Donny changes outfits a few times to match the song and dance sets. The most beloved by his fans now is when he walks on stage wearing his purple blazer. Most fans know that purple is his favorite color, so they show up wearing a lot of purple as well! His youngest fans remember

him as The Peacock in the first Masked Singer season (2019); others from when he appeared and won the Dancing with the Stars competition (2009). Many recall his six-year run as Joseph in the stage play “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” with more than 2,000 performances (1992-1998). With classic Las Vegas vibe, Donny has eight dancers, four male and four female, performing alongside and bringing the “heat.” Smoke and lights enhance the experience. His band includes a great saxophone player who is highlighted several times. The video displays of album covers and photographs through the years are all part of the journey during the 90-minute show. Although you can catch up with all things Donny at Donny.com, or chat with him on Instagram or Twitter, nothing beats seeing him perform live. The show is initially set to run through November, and may be continued, depending on demand and Donny’s stamina. So, if you’re a fan, get your tickets now! The show runs Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. For tickets, visit ticketmaster.com/donnyvegas or call 855.234.7469. See you in Vegas!
