When director of restaurants Blaise Pastoret speaks of Basso, he speaks of legacy — one built on intention and a return to culinary roots. The original Basso, nestled inside the historic Cheshire, opened in 2012 with a vision Blaise describes as “the first elevated gastro-pub experience in St. Louis, modern Italian cuisine expressed through familiar forms.”

Wood-fired pizzas, handrolled pastas, antipasti, fish, pork and refined interpretations of classics shaped the restaurant's early foundation. It became known for craftsmanship and reliance on housemade elements, such as ketchup, aioli, marrow butter, yeasted potato rolls and ingredients sourced from “local purveyors who take pride in their work, including Amish growers whose produce guides our seasonal changes,” Blaise explains.

Entering the Cheshire location feels like discovering a secret.

Guests descend a green terrazzo spiral staircase into a dining room warmed by flickering gas lamps and soft music. The woodfired pizza oven glows at the center, a hearth around which the room orbits. It is here that Chef Frans Dinkelmann has spent the

last year shaping Basso’s story through his own lens of creativity and mentorship.

“I was born in South Africa and raised in Chicago,” Frans shares. “I’ve always leaned toward the creative: art, music, anything expressive.” Cooking eventually became his most natural medium. “When I discovered the vast array of ingredients and techniques in the kitchen, I recognized endless opportunities to create.”

With decades of experience, Frans grounds his leadership in a principle learned under Chef Christopher Pope in New Mexico.

“He taught me that running a successful kitchen starts with surrounding yourself with the best people possible. Learn what each person is good at and put them where they can thrive.”

For Frans, meaning lies in the fleeting nature of the craft. “Food is ephemeral, hours of preparation, minutes of enjoyment, but the happiness it brings people is the most rewarding part.”

He hopes to honor Basso’s legacy while “contributing to the excellence built by the great chefs who came before me.”

Basso On The Plaza

Across the city, Basso Westport, which debuted in May 2025, presents a contrasting architectural personality, airy and expansive.

A dramatic wood façade opens into a dining room framed by floorto-ceiling wraparound windows. Daylight floods the space before evening reveals the signature Basso glow: gas lanterns, a fireplace and communal farmhouse tables alongside intimate booths.

At its helm is Executive Chef Dan Sammons, whose 22-year career includes leadership roles at Basso at The Cheshire, 360 Rooftop Bar and multiple Be Polite Hospitality concepts. “Returning to lead the new Basso at Westport Plaza has been invigorating,” Dan says. “Innovation and quality continue to drive me, and the larger kitchen here allows for an expanded menu while staying true to the soul of Basso.”

Through both chefs, Blaise’s guiding philosophy remains constant: simplicity as luxury. “Pizza dough should have three or four

ingredients, pasta two or three,” he notes. “When you rely on so little, every ingredient must be exceptional.”

SIX DIMENSIONS OF WELLNESS: EverTrue Breeze Park Community Focuses On Physical, Spiritual, Emotional, Social, Environment And Intellectual Well-Being

EverTrue Breeze Park in Weldon Spring is called a Life Plan Community for a reason. It offers all levels of living and care for older adults, including Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Support and a Care Center for short- or long-term care.

“EverTrue Breeze Park truly is a community in every sense of the word,” says executive director, Tammy Hempen. “Our mission is ‘Older adults living life to the fullest.’”

Part of that mission is a focus on wellness: six dimensions of wellness that include physical, spiritual, emotional, social, environment and intellectual aspects.

“Each activity at EverTrue Breeze Park targets a wellness category,” Tammy says. “So, the residents can focus on spiritual wellness by attending the Bible study or a lecture, while also benefiting from social wellness because they're sharing with other people.”

For the focus of physical wellness, “Many of our residents exercise at least five times a week,” says Jes Gustafson, director of community wellness. Jes oversees the gym and pool, teaches exercise classes and facilitates one-on-one sessions with the residents. “They're

very engaged in keeping their bodies moving. They exercise more than I do.”

EverTrue Breeze Park is a community of the EverTrue organization, which has operated in Missouri, Illinois and Pennsylvania for 166 years. The Weldon Spring location opened April 15, 1996.

EverTrue Breeze Park has a walking path, a concierge, transportation, housekeeping and laundry services.

There is an on-site movie theater, swimming pool, library, game rooms and multiple dining options and culinary programs. There's even a resident-led wine club, and residents are able to use community spaces for private parties. Living accommodations include spacious, multiroom residences and private patio homes.

“You have a distinct lifestyle, filled with dreams, passions and goals. At EverTrue Breeze Park, we understand this and support it,” Tammy says.

EverTrue Breeze Park residents are encouraged to try new skills and perfect old talents through arts and crafts, workshops and classes, cultural events and exhibitions. These types of activities have been shown to release feel-good hormones, increase selfworth and provide social connections.

Residents also can enjoy lifestyle enrichment activities, including shopping and day trips, lunches and dinners, mystery trips and multiday excursions.

“We went to Yellowstone recently. We also took a float trip down the Meramec River. We're taking a trip to the Mediterranean next fall,” Tammy says.

“Residents actually pick the trips themselves. This will be intellectual, because we’re going to look at the antiquities, but also social, because we're going as a group. This January, we have a group going to the Western Caribbean.”

She says that trip is for all residents, “no matter what physical limitations,” with qualified nursing attendants for residents who have medical needs.

EverTrue Breeze Park also offers classes in its memory support care. “The classes bring our residents together so they use more of their brain versus just word finding or cognitive problem solving,” says Tammy. “It also helps with engagement and socializing, offering some fun.”

Jen says local school kids often visit residents.

“It's an intergenerational program, so they may be doing a craft where they're socializing with the kids as well as learning something new. It's anywhere from kindergarten to high school kids.”

A group of high school boys come in to play pool and volleyball with residents, she says. “We have one resident who will try to show them up by doing a cannonball into the pool. I'm not kidding you.

We have some amazing independent residents who really live life to the fullest.”

Jen says. “We actually have kids of residents who are on our wait list to move in, because they see how much their parents love it.”

Tammy says team members at EverTrue Breeze Park are dedicated and caring. “Many of our management and long-term employees have been here for 30-plus years. My co-workers are like family. The residents are like family.”

Every level of care has its own resident and family member council as well, Tammy says. “They have a say of what they want to do. For instance, our independent living got on a kick to educate the other residents on a Mediterranean diet.”

EverTrue Breeze Park has a horticulture program where residents do flower arranging or gardening.

“In our memory support care, we have a wall of fake flowers that residents can take back to their rooms,” said Tammy. “It’s been a popular addition.”

Tammy says EverTrue Breeze Park also incorporates proven technology to encourage cognitive and emotional well-being. The facility has a Tovertafel table that interacts with human touch, so residents can move images and play games with each other.

Musicians come to play and sing for residents.

Though real pets are allowed, EverTrue Breeze Park also uses battery-operated dementia-care pets, like dogs, cats and birds for memory support residents. “If you pet them, certain trigger points will have them move, meow or bark or scratch their bellies. They're so cute and very lifelike. We're an animal-friendly community.”

There is a chaplain on staff as well as a music therapist, and speakers visit regularly. “If there's something our residents are interested in, we'll try and find someone who knows about it,” Tammy explains.

Staffers and residents alike have taught subjects such as sign language, dance, painting and woodworking.

“We have a lot of amazing, talented people,” Tammy says. “To be a part of a community like EverTrue Breeze Park, is to be surrounded by talent.”

Navigate the new year in an exhilarating manner with an allnew, redesigned Lincoln Navigator SUV. Stemming from being the first luxury, full-size SUV launched in America, the 2025 model was revised to deliver transformative experiences.

“We took that approach with us to every dealership. All Sinclair family members running a dealership sit on the showroom floor. We believe this is a big reason we’ve always had an A+ rating with the BBB. We’re very easy to get in touch with, and we solve any issues quickly.”

Brian Day, sales manager for Dave Sinclair Lincoln St. Peters, located at 4760 North Service Road since 2003, says it's time to watch for the dealership's incentives for both purchases and leases. The dealership offers new and pre-owned Lincoln models for the Navigator, Nautilus, Corsair and Aviator.

Regarding the new Lincoln Navigator, Brian says a popular feature is its split hatch/tailgate. The Navigator went through multiple redesigns, introducing features such as an extended "L" version, an independent rear suspension for better comfort and later replacing the V8 with a twin-turbo V6 engine. The fifth-generation Navigator carries over the same twin-turbo V6 engine as before, but has a fresh, sharper exterior and an all-new interior, along with standard four-wheel drive.

"Another big selling point is its 48-inch, panoramic display that integrates the instrument cluster and infotainment system. And, of course, the Navigator's fully fresh look catches lots of attention and interest," explains Brian.

The 2025 Lincoln Navigator has a revised front fascia with a redesigned grille and LED lighting, and a "flight theme" for the rear with wing-like tail lights. Its performance remains powered by a 3.5-liter, twin-turbo V6 engine, however, the interior also features advanced technology, such as new interior themes, digital scent cartridge and BlueCruise 1.4, a driver-assist technology from Ford that allows for hands-free driving on prequalified highways called "Blue Zones." The wheels were updated, too, with standard 22-inch wheels on the Reserve model and optional larger wheels.

Truly reimagined design from the ground up, Brian says the Navigator provides a noticeably quiet, comfortable ride.

One of the region's largest automotive dealerships offers an "Only in America" backstory for the past 59 years and counting. Dave Sinclair Ford opened in January 1966 on South Kingshighway Boulevard, and moved to South Lindbergh in South St. Louis County during March 1972. Since the dealership's first year in 1966, it's been the largest Ford dealership in St. Louis, and shortly thereafter, became the largest dealership of any kind in the St. Louis area.

Brian says Dave Sr. set the example of having his office on the showroom floor, with nobody screening his calls. "We took that approach with us to every dealership. All Sinclair family members running a dealership sit on the showroom floor. We believe this is a big reason we've always had an A+ rating with the BBB. We're very easy to get in touch with, and we solve any issues quickly."

As a former police officer, Dave Sr. started selling cars part-time during 1958. By April 1993, Dave Sinclair Buick GMC opened, on the opposite end of the "car row" that the Ford dealership was on in South County. By the end of 1993, it was the largest Buick dealership in Missouri, and in the top 40 in the country.

Dave Sr. passed on during September 2009, after a short battle with cancer, however, his way of doing business didn't change and is carried on within the third generation of Sinclairs now working full time in the operation at various locations.

Also in time for the new year, Brian says their team offers a full line of maintenance services and repairs, including collision restoration. "I will no longer tolerate less than I deserve" is the life lesson shared by a St. Louis-based motivational speaker and author who keenly focuses on personal transformations.

In the book The Love Habit about balancing one's overall health, author and relationship expert Rainie Howard explores the profound connection between self-image and daily habits: emotional, mental and physical, and how these actions shape relationships with others. Whether seeking to enhance communication with loved ones, establish boundaries or foster greater self-love and acceptance, what she references as 'The Love Habit' is a persistent commitment to prioritizing mind, body and spirit by aligning oneself with appreciation, peace and joy above all else in this, her ninth book.

"While many of us understand effects of unhealthy relationships, we're often clueless about how to truly break free of them. Until we understand why people behave the way they do, and that we subconsciously teach others how to treat us, we're powerless to transform this important area of our lives," says Rainie, life coach, president/ CEO of Love Book Store LLC and host of The Rainie Howard Show podcast, which spotlights personal development, mental health issues and advice.

"My book empowers readers with a growth mindset to become the architect of their own destiny."

Rainie's prior books cover topics regarding discovering one's purpose, spiritual growth, being addicted to pain within toxic relationships, healing from heartbreaks, dealing with loneliness, strengthening relationships, finding one's soulmate and daily choices associated with marriage.

What put Rainie on this current path? She shares that when she was 12 years old she was bullied by another girl

on a school bus. The seed of self-doubt took root and grew. However, over time, she cemented a relationship with God. "During 2001, I was a college student leading a faith-based campus ministry," she states.

During 2008, she launched Sisters of Hope, a nonprofit to empower young girls dealing with the same low self-worth she once did. "That work expanded into serving women in the community, and I became a dedicated student of personal growth and mental wellness," she recalls.

In 2026, she predicts the biggest obstacles to having fulfilling, authentic relationships with others is transparency and emotional connection: "With so much noise online, authentic relationships require presence, empathy and self-awareness, qualities that can’t thrive when we’re constantly 'on.' Real fulfillment comes from slowing down, creating intentional time for deep conversations, and prioritizing emotional honesty over image."

Rainie recommends, "A powerful New Year’s resolution for self-image is to choose three actions you can control that would make you genuinely proud, and practice them daily. Start with a short journaling check-in and a few minutes of meditation to surface what you truly want. Then make one clear promise to yourself and keep it."

She says her personal goals for 2026 are centered on expansion, alignment and impact.

The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT

Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers?

Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health.

Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids.

“Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.”

In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”

Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.

6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”

Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1,
