Your family can wander along the raised boardwalk that elevates into the tree canopy and overlooks two lakes at Veterans Tribute Park. Or challenge your friends to a game of disc golf at the champion 18-hole course at New Melle Lakes. This spring, Riverside Landing will undergo some major renovations including several small and large campsites, walking trails, fire pits and play area. It will reopen this summer. THE RACK HOUSE KITCHEN WINE WHISKEY IN COTTLEVILLE IS A PLACE FOR NEIGHBORS TO MEET AFTER A LONG DAY OR A WEEKEND RETREAT  FOR GREAT FOOD, GREAT WINE AND AN EXTENSIVE WHISKEY LIST. They reach out to local farmers and vendors to provide customers with the best Missouri offers. Local produce partners provide the freshest ingredients to give each meal the best flavors. “We support our farming neighbors, the way our neighbors have supported our business,” says owner John Hamilton. He says Eat Here St. Louis is committed to sourcing the best local products for our community. They believe that the best products are those that are grown locally, allowing them to ripen in the fields and not on a truck on the drive from Mexico or California. Mushrooms Naturally grows natural, local, gourmet mushrooms in O’Fallon, Missouri. The Rack House Kitchen Wine Whiskey  also has a private event space and  a great wisteria-covered patio. Follow them on Facebook to keep up with all of their special events.

LOCALLY OWNED

(CON TI N U ED)

IF YOUR HOME NEEDS SOME SPRING SPRUCING, HERE ARE SOME REDECORATING/REMODELING TIPS TO GO FROM

Decorating Tips

OUTDATED AND DINGY TO FRESHLY UPDATED, MAKING YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR HOME ALL OVER AGAIN. KITCHEN It’s the heart of the home, and it’s where many homeowners sink big money to make upgrades. Kitchen renovations don’t have to require a second mortgage though. Re-facing rather than replacing cabinetry can bring about a whole new look for a whole lot less money. This is a good option when the existing cabinets are still in good working condition and you’re just looking for an aesthetic change. Other small-scale options include swapping out the countertop and sink, changing the lighting fixtures and updating tired floors with contemporary wood or tile.  BATHROOM When plumbing is involved, project costs can skyrocket, but there are some relatively simple ways you can give your bathroom a facelift on a modest budget. For starters, swap out all the fixtures, from lighting to faucets. A new vanity is another instant upgrade, whether you opt for an updated version of the original or select a whole new style for a completely fresh look. Also consider upgrades that can increase natural light and fresh air without compromising privacy, such as the addition of skylights to your ceiling or “fifth wall,” which can completely change the lighting dynamic of the room. In addition to balanced, natural light, skylights like those from Velux, for example, can open to help refresh your space and keep it odor- and moisture-free. LIVING ROOM A common space where the family gathers is likely to sustain the greatest wear and tear, and because you spend so much time there, it’s also a room where you’re likely to find a list of things that irk you. Creating a new color scheme is a simple fix that transforms the space, but changing the palette of the walls is just the beginning. Also consider taking your redesign to the ceiling with vibrant colors, creative wallpapers or even exposed beams. Round out the room by swapping out lamp shades, adding vibrant throw pillows, replacing old curtains or blinds, or tying the color scheme together with a new area rug. BEDROOM In your private sanctuary, all the typical options for updates apply for sure. However, this is a space where the furnishings can be an especially impactful way to influence the ambiance, especially if a construction project in the room where you sleep is impractical. Changing out the style of the bed frame and complementary pieces creates a whole new vibe for the room. Then bring in a new collection of textiles for the bedding and drapery to help round out the renovation. 18

Oma's Barn, in St. Peters, is open again for the season and has a wide variety of items for both indoor and outdoor decorating to bring some springtime to your home. Oma's is even offering online shopping now.  The White Hare, in Cottleville, is  another amazing home decor store. Owner Sarah Corrigan offers these spring decorating tips: + Bring the garden indoors by incorporating zero-care silk plants such as topiaries, potted greens and boxwood balls. + Instantly brighten any room with a quick switch from bland pillows to pillows with bolder, brighter spring floral patterns and a coordinating throw. + Loosely arranged spring stems in a large vase are a show-stopper in the middle of a table. Add in a beautiful runner underneath for added interest and texture. + Create a “spring-scape” in any window space, on shelves or on a tray with a grouping of potted tulips, statuary such as a bunny, candleholders and a printed fabric napkin underneath it all to soften the look.

The kitchen is the heart of the home.

Add pops of color to brighten any room.

ARTICLE NIKKI PETERS

ST. CHARLES COUNTY= COMMUNITY STRONG STRENGTH CARRIES MANY DEFINITIONS. Webster’s Dictionary defines strength in many ways including but not limited to: possessing great physical power, possessing great moral or ethical prowess, effective, efficient, superior of its kind, and moving with great force. We live in a culture that values strength and a community that is in need of it. St. Charles County

Executive Director Carissa Figgins

carries the potential to be that “great force,” and the organization Community Strong has taken notice. Almost four years in the making, Community Strong is a coordinated nonprofit coalition seeking to improve the physical, mental and social health of St. Charles County. Community Strong affirms that it “supports simple lifestyle changes and celebrates the collective impact small successes have on the well-being of St. Charles County." It also promotes connecting with others, both virtually and in person, who are working toward a healthy lifestyle, as well as focusing on a positive mindset, movement and wellness in the workplace. Executive Director Carissa Figgins explains that we “keep ourselves too busy to care for others,” and we often don’t even know who our neighbors are, much less socialize with them. Community Strong is actively seeking to bring back a social network in St. Charles County through its Facebook page, along with a bimonthly newsletter residents can subscribe to via CommunityStrongSCC.org, and maintaining a strong social media presence. In addition to advocating for social connectivity, Community Strong has a 15-year plan, with the end goal hopefully leading to St. Charles County being recognized as the healthiest county in the nation. This initiative involves tackling the obesity concerns within the county, addressing the heroin and substance abuse crisis, and establishing connections between St. Charles County residents and available preventative care. These three pillars are known as Movement, Mindset and Connections. Carissa suggests that a “healthy mindset is a playful mindset,” which is the theme Community Strong plans to officially launch at an all-ages block party in late August/early September. County residents will be encouraged to participate in this event, which is a stepping stone for the community’s growing together and moving toward achieving the goal of a more unified “Community Strong” St. Charles County.
