COSMETIC SURGERY

In 2024 PLASTIC SURGEON DENIZ SARHADDI, M.D., ADDRESSES TOP QUESTIONS

“2024 will be the year of looking natural and choosing interventions that make us feel more like ourselves. This means diligent skin care, tasteful injectables, small breast

Cosmetic surgery offers individuals the opportunity to improve their physical appearance, address specific concerns and boost confidence. Chesterfield-based plastic surgeon Deniz Sarhaddi, M.D., with St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery, says she believes when people look their best, they feel their best. She’s also an enthusiastic educator, committed to training St. Louis University senior plastic surgery residents in aesthetic surgery. enhancements, weight loss optimizing results from surgical interventions and facial rejuvenation surgery that maintains a natural, cohesive look.”

Deniz Sarhaddi, M.D.

Full-Face Rejuvenation is predicted to be the top trend of 2024. What does this procedure entail? "For a full facial rejuvenation, I recommend my patients start with the most basic part: skin care. An even, bright complexion alone can take years off of any face, and involves consistency with a few key products at home. A full facial rejuvenation can include nonsurgical and surgical interventions (usually a customized combination of the two) to correct signs of aging from the hairline down to the clavicles."

What two main elements should patients consider when deciding with you between surgical or nonsurgical approaches? "The goal and the degree of facial laxity are two of the most important things to consider. The best person to assess when a patient has graduated from nonsurgical maintenance to surgical intervention is a provider who is an expert in both."

What should patients expect at their first plastic surgery consultation? "My patients can expect to sit down with me for about an hour, to review their medical/surgical history and any nonsurgical interventions they have undergone (if it’s a face consult), to have a full exam in front of a mirror where I'll discuss with them what I see, and then we will take time to review options to address their concerns, and I will answer any questions."

How will you use artificial intelligence and 3D imaging during the new year? "I routinely use 3D imaging for breast-related surgeries to 'try on' implants of different sizes and projections. This approach basically always matches up with the preoperative trial with bra sizers, and I find my patients are happy with their final implant size after surgery."

IF LAUGHTER IS BEST MEDICINE, ST. LOUIS HAS WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED ARTICLE BY ROBIN SEATON JEFFERSON

It is said that laughter is the best medicine. These two should know: Victor Hugo lived to be 83; Milton Berle 93. Arguably one of the greatest writers of all time, and author of “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame” and “Les Misérables,” Victor Hugo, stated, “Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.” And Milton Berle, affectionately known as "Uncle Miltie" and “Mr. Television,” whose Tuesday night television show was so beloved, it caused store owners to put up signs: "Closed tonight to watch Milton Berle," said, “Laughter is an instant vacation.” Victor's and Milton's careers spanned 60 and 80 years, respectively. And their words on laughter are particularly relevant still for Missourians who face January temperatures between 19 and 30 degrees F. So why not take that “instant vacation” and “drive the winter from [your] face” with a trip to a local comedy club? St. Louis and St. Charles Counties have plenty to offer by way of laughing and even improvising the way through Midwestern storms. Other St. Louis comedy clubs have come and gone over the years, but the St. Louis Funny Bone continues to endure in the St. Louis area as a locals’ favorite. With two locations now at Westport Plaza and the Streets of St. Charles, the traditional comedy clubs harken back to the days of modern American stand-up comedy, when entertainers became major

Checkup Time

Advice Editorial: How To Make Sure Physical Bases Are Covered ARTICLE BY DR. BETH TEMPLIN, HOUSEFIT PHYSICAL THERAPY & FITNESS

D R .

B E T H

T E M P L I N ,

PT, DPT, GCS

Every year, most people see their physician for an annual checkup; doctors monitor and manage patients' medical health: blood pressure, weight, medical issues and medications. When patients have an annual checkup with a physical therapist, we focus on physical health: balance, strength, endurance, flexibility, posture and ability to move and do the things they love. Managing both of these health care areas is key to staying healthy and active. Similar to a physician's checkup, a physical therapy checkup identifies issues early, so they can be addressed right away. A physical therapy checkup is recommended for people who're having trouble doing things they enjoy doing: playing with grandchildren, gardening, golfing or traveling. Also, for those having trouble doing things they need to do: getting mail, taking out trash, going up/down stairs, doing laundry or grocery shopping. Checkups are especially for those who aren’t as steady on their feet anymore, and are nervous about having a fall. If we uncover major issues during checkups, we may recommend physical therapy. If only minor issues are identified, then we can help patients update their fitness routines. Dr. Beth Templin, PT, DPT, GCS, is a leading geriatric physical therapist in St. Louis. 314.939.1377 HouseFitSTL.com

THE LIAM MICHAEL FOUNDATION: SAVING LIVES

LIAM’S MEMORY LIVES ON 30

FAM ILY CA R E | W EL L NESS

"Passion with purpose can move mountains. Our overall goal is simply to do good in whatever way we can," asserts Lisa Picker, founder and president of a St. Charles-based nonprofit The Liam Michael Foundation. This foundation was borne out of love

It was toward the end of grade school that Liam began to withdraw, she remembers, finding excuses not to attend parties or sleepovers. “He was such a young soul to be so tormented and so aware that something was wrong,” says Lisa.

“WE’RE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO LEAVE THE WORLD BETTER THAN WE FOUND IT.” for her only son, Liam, who lost his battle with mental illness and ultimately his life in 2015. The foundation's program now helps others through what the group deems as 'Butterfly Projects,' based on the butterfly effect that reflects even the smallest of actions or events can result in some of the biggest changes or transformations later. Nine years ago, Lisa suffered the most devastating blow that any parent could endure. She lost her son, Liam, to his own actions. “I’d give anything to have him back, but I wouldn't want him back struggling the way he was struggling,” says Lisa. “If you're a gentle person, I think you get bullied more." Liam was a gentle soul but also an exceptional young man, she recalls. Drawn to Japanese culture at a young age, he taught himself to read, write and speak the language. He cruised effortlessly through his gradeschool years, and like most boys, he enjoyed basketball and skateboarding.

Liam did find his voice in an unusual place: the piano keys. Liam had never taken lessons so Lisa says the family couldn’t believe it when they came home one night and heard him playing so fluidly. “We found him a wonderful piano teacher who said the first time she sat down with him, she knew she was sitting with greatness,” Lisa recalls. After his passing, Liam’s composition “Winter” debuted at Carnegie Hall. It was later picked up for a Japanese motion picture soundtrack. Unfortunately, Liam sank deeper into depression, while struggling with obsessive-compulsive disorder and social anxiety. No medicine that physicians tried seemed to make him better, Lisa shares. Liam was too young in Missouri to receive certain treatments, but he was approved for a different type of therapy called TMS therapy. He would not live to try it. Through her grief and despair, Lisa promised herself she would do CONTINUED >

whatever she could to prevent another parent from suffering this unthinkable fate. And so, in her son’s memory, she started the 501(c)(3) Liam Michael Foundation. The nonprofit is devoted to making the world a better place through mental health awareness and prevention. Through their Butterfly Projects, they offer financial support for mental health services to those in need. Lisa says they have provided more than $40,000 in mental health care services to date. “We offer financial assistance for families, whether it's a headstone, or just giving $1,000 toward a casket, we have that,” she explains. “It’s very personal to me because that was the first thing that we had to do with Liam: pay for a very expensive funeral.” The third Butterfly Project is a happy one; it’s their music project inspired by Liam’s incredible musical ability. The foundation strives to make music accessible to those who are introspectively struggling. St. Charles native Kathryn Shipley is the foundation's new director of music programs. She is a recording academy member for the Grammys and a member of the Gospel Music Association. "She comes to us with an impressive amount of musical talent and accolades. We're excited to welcome her aboard," Lisa states. In fact, the group is planning to host a Music Trivia event during 2024. “We have no paid employees on our board. Those that volunteer knew Liam and volunteer out of passion and love,” Lisa says.

“THE LIAM MICHAEL FOUNDATION PROVIDES MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT AND SERVICES FOR THOSE AFFECTED.” Lisa is encouraged by the state of education and the awareness of mental illness and the effects it can have, even with middle school-age kids. “We recently sat down with students from different high schools, and a couple of colleges on the Mayoral Task Force in St. Charles, who wanted to hear about Liam and our foundation,” says Lisa. “They’re putting together projects for mental health awareness, and we're going to partner alongside them.” Lisa still works as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital-St. Louis, but says she will retire during 2024. She plans on working full time for the foundation, doing what she loves best in Liam’s name. Lisa says she never underestimates the power of a small action. “When I speak at seminars or conferences or whatever we do, it's never about how many people show up, because it can be one person who needs to hear that,” Lisa says, smiling.

HEALTHY LIVING, Choices MAKE CHANGES

ARTICLE BY DEBBIE MORRIS, INTEGRITY TRAINING SYSTEMS

January is my favorite time of year: a time to embark on new opportunities and forget the past. It is a chance to transform lives. I help people shift their thinking then apply practical steps that create life-change. I teach them to make health a lifestyle, not just a short-term goal. I coach them on how to go beyond new year's resolutions to feeling great until their final day. I help them level up nutrition and movement patterns to reach maximum potential and fulfill their mission. Healthy nutrition and fitness can help you fulfill your overarching goals in life, not only physically but also professionally. Proper nutrition enhances quality of life. It stabilizes your nervous system, allowing you to see through a clear lens. Nutrition balances your hormones and gives you strength to endure whatever physical demands the day brings. Exercise is the catalyst for dramatic change in your body. Cardio improves cardiovascular performance and endurance and increases your life span. It protects your bones better than calcium, lowers blood sugar and blood pressure, and creates a body composition you will enjoy. It also changes your mood and brain chemistry. Yet, while exercise is important, you will never see the results you desire without proper nutrition. CONTINUED >

As we embark upon a new year, make mind, body and spirit a priority. This is the best time to begin! Chase after health first, and weight will come naturally. Skip fad diets. Start with an anti-inflammatory approach to food. Avoid foods full of bad oils, meat-curing agents, preservatives, sugars, syrups and artificial sweeteners. These perpetuate disease in your body. Food is fuel for longevity, as well as the physical shape you desire. For consistent energy, you must fuel the body regularly and in a balanced way. A well-balanced plate levels your mood and blood sugar, creating a consistent flow of energy. It also provides mental clarity that can move you to the next level in your career. Create balance with your nutrients. When looking at your plate, you should be able to identify your quality protein source, such as chicken, turkey, grass-fed beef, fish or protein powder. You should be able to identify your healthy fat, such as olive oil, avocado oil, avocado, raw nuts, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds or olives. Finally, you want quality carbohydrates. Fill your plate with veggies! Make it colorful. You can consume over 150 grams of carbs daily just from veggies full of healthy fiber plus a small amount of fruit. Veggies fight disease. Remember this: Choices make changes. Seek consistency, not perfection. Don’t wait to feel motivated. Create habits, and stick to them. These create positive change in you and inspire health in those around you. People see the light in you and want what you have. You can inspire them to change for the better, too. And I believe that is what God brought us here to do: to help others. Your health is your greatest asset. It is worth the fight. Don’t give up, and don’t give in! God bless you as you fight strong.

SMOOTHIE BOWLS

ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES Start your day with a nutritious and vitamin-packed breakfast. Smoothie bowls are a great way to add a variety of fruits and vegetables. Top with chia or flax seeds for an extra omega-3 boost, nuts or seeds for added protein, or sliced fruit for additional vitamins and fiber. Including a hint of turmeric or ginger can aid in digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables can aid in cellular repair and gut health, and smoothie bowls are a delicious way to incorporate more into your day. Try some of these simple recipes, or create your own combinations to give your health a boost. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/STC H A R L E S C O UN T Y
