ARTICLE BY JUDY PETERS A traumatic event in Marlon Williams’ life as a teenager led him to find his true calling.

In 1993, when he was 13, his mother was in a terrible car accident involving a tractor-trailer.

During her recuperation, her doctor asked Marlon to help with stretching her muscles. “I mean, her doctor made it ‘fun’ for me…he gave the muscles funny names (now I know the real names). I didn’t know I was doing massage therapy.”

He went to college at MSU to study Media Production but following college, ended up applying as a massage therapist at a salon in Springfield. “I was told I needed a license for that. So, instead, I ended up doing social work. One day, I literally dropped the phone book and it opened up to a massage therapy school, and I took that as a sign.”

So, Marlon attended massage therapy school and went on to open his first massage therapy spa in St. Charles at Three Flags Center in 2007, calling it True Massage Therapy.

He later advanced his training to become a certified medical massage therapist. “The goal of this type of massage is to avoid surgery where possible,” he says. “For example, I’ve had people come in for carpal tunnel in their wrists and after just two treatments, are amazed at how much better it feels.”

True Massage Therapy offers all types of massage, including prenatal massage, bamboo massage, hot stones, cupping, and massage with aromatherapy.

He opened a second location this fall in Weldon Spring at 1030 Wolfrum Rd. and is also opening a location in Springfield. He wants to eventually expand into downtown St. Louis as well.

The new Weldon Spring location houses a massage school, which he is excited to be finally implementing. “Right after receiving my accreditation by the state, Covid hit and salons were shut down. I’m finally getting to open a school and this is the perfect space for it,” he says.

The 10-month program will have up to 12 students with three instructors. “Basically, we want to get them ready to open and run their own business. I want them to learn from every mistake I’ve made so they don’t make the same ones. And I want them to learn how to do massage correctly…how to really listen to the client for their particular needs,” he explains.

“I like to get people out of physical pain first, then we can focus on pure relaxation and stress reduction. My advice for getting the best massage is to ask any and every question you may have. Don’t be afraid to ask the therapist for more, or less pressure. Just let us know. This is your time and you should get exactly what you want out of your treatment.”

The Weldon Spring location has eight massage therapy rooms.

He is currently looking for an esthetician as the current one is moving out of the area. The other side of the wellness center houses a chiropractor.

The dentists and staff at Brown Family Dental Care in Cottleville have made earning their patient's trust the foundation of the practice. “We believe in serving patients with honesty and integrity,” says Dr. Jay Brown, owner.

“We really love the family aspect of dentistry and taking care of all ages.”

Jay opened his new 5,000-squarefoot office in Old Town Cottleville in May, though he bought the practice in 2012 that was founded by long-time St. Charles family dentist, Dr. Paul Dolan.

“Dr. Dolan started his practice in the sixties,” Jay said. “His patients loved him. We still have patients who came to Dr. Dolan. We want to keep that trust, that small-town feel, going. Our philosophy is pretty simple: We honestly do seek to treat people the way we want to be treated.”

With over 16 years of experience, Jay and his associate, Dr. Stuart Scott, offer a full range of dental services including dental exam and treatment planning; dental hygiene and periodontal health; tooth extraction and bone grafting; fillings; crowns and bridges; implants and dentures; and cosmetic dentistry.

The office also offers beverages while you wait, a phone charging area, and a tooth brushing station to polish up before seeing the dentist. Jay and Stuart also offer emergency appointments and second opinions.

Jay went to dental school in Alabama and committed to serving four years on active duty (three of which were in Europe). He transitioned to the Army Reserve in 2010 and moved to Missouri

with his family. Today he spends his free time with his wife, three children and their dog, Frankincense. The family is highly involved in First Baptist Church O'Fallon.

Stuart and Jay have known each other since 2010. Stuart says he started out working with Jay as his dental assistant when he was a young college kid aspiring to be a dentist himself. The pair were fast friends. “He was full of questions,” Jay says.

Stuart earned his doctorate in dentistry from the University of MissouriKansas City School of Dentistry. He then spent several years in Jefferson County public health, working at a nonprofit that provided dental services to poor families with severe dental and health needs. In 2017, when his contract was nearing completion, he received a call from Jay who had become overwhelmed with patients at his growing practice.

“My concern at the time was that the industry was changing rapidly.

Corporate dentistry was replacing private ownership at an alarming rate. I wasn’t sure if we could be competitive against the giant dental groups,” says Stuart. Jay assured him that “there will always be a place for good and honest dentistry,” and the two have worked together ever since. The practice has continued to grow through word-ofmouth referrals and by gaining the trust of its patients.

Stuart says he was fortunate to find a business partner and mentor that he could trust. And the two have many similarities aside from professional obligations. As a member of the Army National Guard, Stuart serves in the military as well. Stuart also spends his free time with his wife, three children and their dog, Harlow. Both enjoy church, outdoor activities, and serving their community.

Brown Family Dental Care has been a part of the Cottleville community since 2012. The practice used to be located on Mid Rivers Mall Drive, just a mile away from its new location. Jay says the

“City Lifestyle” advertisement is the first marketing he has ever done. “We’ve never done any marketing, flyers or anything. We have been all word of mouth.”

“All the experts say you can’t grow a practice without marketing—by just treating people nice,” Stuart said. “But we don’t sell dentistry. We don’t upsell dentistry. We do the treatment that is necessary and are happy to give second opinions.”

Such was the case with one of Brown Family Dental’s patients. She explained it this way in her review: “Best dentist office I have had the luck of going to! I used to

Monica Adams Quentin Find the way to happiness, no matter what it takes, is the sage advice of Monica Adams Quentin, Today In St. Louis anchor/reporter for KSDK Channel 5 and certified personal trainer. She adds, “Find a way to smile and laugh today. Let your laughter burst out. It’s the ‘music of the soul!’”

Monica is indeed following her own recommendation, by side-stepping from her morning shift post at KSDK-TV as of Jan. 6, to work as a full-time, personal transformation consultant, including fitness, fashion and media-based facets.

“It’s about balancing life within the power triangle of mental, spiritual and physical components. Everyone should know their value. Set your intentions each morning. Work toward your goals. And count gratitudes each night,” says this energetic enterpriser who decided the time was right to follow her heart by collaborating with others who also ‘walk her walk’ and ‘talk her talk.’

Cue up the ever-popular line from the 1956-1968 TV game show To Tell the Truth: Will the real Monica Adams stand up? Right on cue, the real Monica is always accessible. She says people frequently comment about how down-to-earth and authentic she is when they meet her or work with her. “It was ingrained in me during my childhood to be real and honest,” confirms this St. Louis native whose new URL reflects this same sentiment.

“After so many years of getting up at 1:30 or 2 a.m., I’m looking forward to being part of things I was missing out on, starting with spending time with my husband and our three dogs,” Monica says.

FA S H I O N STYLIST Her years of privately styling men, often while working with Bachrach Menswear or Bespoke Apparel in Clayton, now will be extended to women, too. She says she’s happy to help people identify what’s missing in their wardrobes or determine the proper colors to wear. Her premise for concierge styling and custom clothing partially stems from watching her mother meticulously work as a seamstress.

PERSONALIZED, BOUTIQUE FITNESS From being in the fitness industry for 20-plus years, Monica learned the art of honing goals. She attended the University of Missouri-Columbia to study exercise science and athletic training. However, at 19 years old, she says she was told she had a massive blood clot and had to be monitored for two years. “In that time, I turned even more to health and fitness. I’d always been an athlete, having played soccer, softball and basketball, and been in track and field.”

She became an official personal trainer in 1999.

Now, she says she’s planning customized retreats, while collaborating with owners of Le Champ de Fleurs, formerly known as Stone Soup Cottage, in Cottleville. This 33-acre farm is a respite for culinary health and wellness.

“I’ve been leading a transformational journey group for the past two years, which has been private until now. I’ll work with a larger group in the future, including providing recipes and other inspiring factors. I’m also working with fitness facilities to provide semi-private or private fitness classes,” Monica reveals.

She says she likes fitness classes with 15 participants or less, so she can have her eyes on everyone she’s affecting, and so no one feels lost or falls aside. “I love to see those aha moments in people’s faces when I adjust something they’re doing and they realize what it’s supposed to really feel like in their bodies,” she admits, adding that she’s already directing transformations at Force Performance in Brentwood and Mark Anthony’s in Kirkwood.

LI F E COAC H FOR PERSONAL JOURNEYS Monica says she likes to imagine how her last second on Earth would be spent. “That type of vision makes you think deeper about how you live life, and how others perceive you. Each day God gives us is holy and a precious gift from Him. We should enjoy it fully. Joy is powerful.”

She says she especially likes teaching people how to journal for personal reflections.

M O T I VAT I O N A L SPEAKING Monica wants to talk with others about getting down to business, meeting goals and changing their lives, harkening to her fondness of her radio days. “You’ve got to speak your truth and do all the work to really achieve balance in life, which is so unbelievably short.”

Post-pandemic, mental health has taken center stage, reflects Monica.

“I’m glad mental health issues are out in the open. It’s given us a new lease on life to speak, feel and trust. We should definitely discuss life and inspire each other. Thinking about what we can even accomplish through podcasts and YouTube lights me up.”

​ eople who are older than 55 years rouP tinely contact physical therapists at St. Louis-headquartered HouseFit, searching for answers about how to best stay active and independent as they age, says the company's founder/owner Dr. Beth Templin, PT, DPT, GCS. As a geriatric physical therapist, Dr. Templin says she and her therapists focus entirely on helping older adults move and feel better. "Most people's No. 1 complaint of aging is walking and difficulty with stairs. We guide our clients through customized plans to help them continue living as safely and productively as possible in their homes," she adds.

After working in geriatrics for 13 years, Dr. Templin opened her practice in 2017 as a mobile physical therapy clinic. She recalls quickly realizing there was a need for better ways to serve the local aging community. "I kept noticing people didn't have the services they needed to stay active and independent, to enjoy their
