LIFESTYLE LETTER
Holiday Cheer It’s in the air…the spirit of the holiday season! As we reflect on, and often try to replicate, what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth, it may bring up images of new puppies for Christmas, special annual traditions and gatherings. The goal for many of us often is to mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it’s the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all that reflect that best. This issue highlights the magic of the season and some of what our County has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We also share some tips for successful, festive holiday entertaining. We’ve even compiled a unique pet/pet lovers gift guide as well as helpful advice on surprising a loved one with a new puppy. So, whether your holiday plans include curling up by the fire with a good book (we feature two by local authors), buying a new Ford Bronco Heritage edition (page 26) attending a fundraising gala or some other fun area event, we hope your days are merry and bright. But while this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have lost a loved one or are in financial need. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. The 3rd Annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. Please read how you can nominate recipients on page 34. Our hope for all of you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to extend grace and empathy to each other. Happy Holidays To All!

SURPRISE... It’s a Puppy! What Can Be More Fun Than a New Puppy for Christmas?
It can be tempting to give a cute, cuddly pet as a holiday gift. That precious purring kitty or tail-wagging puppy is delightful but comes with a commitment. If you're thinking about giving a pet as a gift, the experts caution against the gift being a “surprise.” And you should probably only give a pet to a family member or very close friend – but again, not as a surprise - always ask the receiver first if they want a pet. A surprise may feel more “fun,” but in the long run everyone — whether they have two legs or four — will be happier if you ask up front, and make sure they are up for this 10, 15, or 20-year commitment – emotionally and financially. If they do agree to the idea, picking it out together can be fun, or if they agree to be “surprised” by what you give to them, here are a few great local places to find the perfect pet. Five Acres Animal Shelter is a no-kill animal shelter located on Pralle Ln. in St. Charles. The mission of Five Acres is “to end pet homelessness, promote responsible pet ownership, and advocate for animal welfare.” They do not euthanize the animals that come to them but strive to provide the best care possible to each animal while they await their forever home. The majority of the animals come from private citizens who are unable to keep their pets for one reason or another, and the staff at Five Acres loves and cares for them until they find another family for them to join. They also work with local animal
ARTICLE BY JUDY PETERS
control facilities and other overcrowded shelters in Missouri and other parts of the country to transfer animals to Five Acres that face euthanasia. Choosing a pet through the St Charles County Pet Adoption Center offers outstanding value. Their adoption fee includes a health examination, initial vaccinations, spay or neuter service, temperament education, a County License tag, and microchipping - services that are not always included when adopting elsewhere. “Whether you're seeking a playful pup, a dynamic dog or a mature mutt, we have the right canine for your home,” says their website. The cost to adopt dogs or puppies is $60. There are also a few stray rescue non-profit organizations, such as Stray Paws Rescue, which protects and improves the lives of rescued animals and places them in loving permanent homes in the St. Louis Metro. What could be more fun than getting a cute new puppy as a gift? But as we all know, it’s all fun and games until the first “puppy incident.” VetStreet. com offers some great tips on caring for a new puppy. Also, AnimalHumaneSociety.org offers a Pet Helpline where folks are standing by to help with advice and resources, at 952-HELP-PET (952-435-7738). So take advantage of these, and other, resources to help keep your new pet happy and healthy and enjoying the holidays with you!

JOIN AN ORPHANED, 14-YEAR-OLD BOY, WHO FEELS LOST AND LONELY, AND ENTERS A MAGICAL WORLD DESPERATE FOR A HERO. Rachel Browdy, a St. Louis area high school history teacher, wife, mother of three, and author, has written a new novel for young adults called Journey Through the Advent Calendar that brings the elements of the Advent season to life in a fun and epic way. The story begins in modern-day United States, but the main character, Zach, is quickly transported into the world within his Advent Calendar, Burra Din, a magical world filled with hidden dangers and wondrous people and creatures. Rachel says she was inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and all the great tales of Christmas, as well as by her own family’s love for Christmas, her Catholic background and education, as well as her desire to bring back the passion and excitement of age-old lessons and stories. The book is available in bookstores and JourneyThroughTheAdventCalendar.com.
WHETHER THIS IS YOUR FIRST VISIT TO SAINT CHARLES, OR YOU’RE A LOCAL RESIDENT, YOU’LL LEARN NEW THINGS AND INTERESTING HISTORY ALONG THE ROUTE OF THESE FOUR WALKING TOURS. History comes alive in Historic Saint Charles, and according to longtime resident, history enthusiast, and author Valerie Battle Kienzle, the best way to experience Main Street and nearby areas is on foot. So, grab a pair of comfortable walking shoes, slip St. Charles Walking Tour into your backpack or purse, and prepare to be wowed. Valerie’s new book includes four easy walks, plus several suggested short side trips. Each walk includes a detailed map with points of interest, accompanied by brief historical information and photographs. See places seen by explorers Lewis and Clark prior to their historic Corps of Discovery trip and try to imagine what it was like to travel west by wagon on the Boone’s Lick Trail. Whether you’re a local resident, history buff, or a visitor, this book will help you see St. Charles from a whole new angle…and it makes for a great holiday gift! It can be found at Main Street Books, and other bookstores. Valerie Battle Kienzle, author

BRONCO SUV TRENDSETTERS WHERE TO SECURE 1960S BRONCO STYLING THAT CONVERGES WITH MODERN CAPABILITIES ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON As part of Clement Auto Group’s drive for excellence, the dealer’s sales team is offering the new Ford Bronco Heritage edition, an exclusive SUV with a select number of them planned for manufacturing. Five generations of the Bronco were sold from the 1966 to 1996 model years. A sixth generation of the line was introduced for the 2021 model year as the first SUV model developed by the company. “We have the Bronco Heritage on-site to sell, and we’re taking orders for others,” says Evangeline Sutton, Clement Auto Group’s chief market officer. At press time, the dealership also had some new 2022 Ford Bronco Sport Big Bends and 2022 Ford Bronco Sport Badlands models available, as well as a few 2021 Ford Bronco Outer Banks models.

HOW BRONCO INTRIGUE BEGAN The Ford Bronco is considered one of the most iconic SUVs in American history. The first generation of the Bronco, which lasted from 1966 to 1977, was available in three versions: as a hardtop, a pickup truck or a convertible. Interestingly, Ford built just 1,966 units of each Heritage Limited Edition model to commemorate the year the original Bronco debuted. Clement Auto Group President and Owner Penuel “Raj” Clement says the Bronco captivated America in the mid1960s with its rugged style and uncompromising off-road agility. ”These new Heritage editions pay respect to Bronco’s roots with nods to some of the signature design cues from the first-generation vehicle, while continuing to build the Bronco Brand with more special editions that our Clement Ford customers want.” Bronco two- and four-door Heritage models are highlighted by a two-tone paint
job that includes signature Oxford White accents, including the modular hardtop roof. A unique Oxford White grille features Race Red “FORD” lettering, while 17-inch aluminum heritage wheels painted in Oxford White and a bodyside stripe dial up the throwback looks. The 1960s-era-inspired squared fenders with Sasquatch-width fender flares provide a visual callback and cover the nearly 2-inch wider track. A powder-coated steel-capable front bumper with built-in recovery points and integrated fog lamps is standard. Inside, Bronco Heritage Edition units feature plaid cloth seats and exclusive touches, such as an Oxford White instrument panel, center console badging and exclusive front and rear floor liners. Heritage Edition models come standard with Big Bend series equipment and features, including a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine with a 7-speed manual or available 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. The engine
delivers up to 300 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. torque. The Sasquatch Package with a HighPerformance Off-Road Stability Suspension (H.O.S.S.) 2.0 system with long-travel Bilstein position-sensitive dampers with end-stop control valves and increased ride height is standard, as are 35-inch Goodyear mud-terrain tires and Dana front and rear electronic locking axles with 4.7:1 final drive ratio. Evangeline says a 30-year, 300,000-mile warranty comes with the Bronco Heritage edition when purchasing it at Clement Ford, which is a leading Ford Advantage dealership in the Midwest. A special price for this Bronco model is available to St. Charles County Lifestyle readers, she adds. Clement Ford is located at 1075 W. Terra Lane in O’Fallon, Missouri. For any future vehicle servicing needs, this dealership has Fordaccredited mechanics. 636.492.5052 ClementAutoGroup.com
Two new models for 2023 include Bronco Heritage and Heritage Limited Editions. They embody the performance, power and technology of a modern SUV with the styling cues of the 1966 original. Cozying up homes, especially this time of year, delivers a special level of comfort. Whether a house, apartment or townhouse, an ambiance of hospitality can be created. Warm-toned furnishings and lighting can make immediate differences. Winter often provokes nostalgic feelings of family gatherings, anticipated festivities and home-style cooking. Bring back the familiar by also adding a few traditional style elements, such as holiday-scented candles, embroidered accent pillows, a cushy rocking chair, heirloom books or a plaid blanket, for example. Get inspired by these “looks” to create perfectly chic and personally welcoming spaces!
Jeanne Lashmett, owner of JML Interior Design, enjoys creating calming, serene gathering spaces that allow people to relax and focus on each other. “We often apply customized, casual touches of elegance, along with watercolor-like, softer color palettes in such rooms,” she says. In the room featured here, her goal was to open it up, making it feel bright and airy. Heavy formal window treatments were removed, being replaced by luxurious white plantation shutters. The more serious furniture was replaced with a much more casual style. The incorporation of taller plants and softer-colored finishes allowed an outdoors-brought-in feeling to be developed. “I can easily see this room being in a cozy coastal setting, on a tranquil beach, asserts Jeanne. 314.435.4233 JMLInteriors.net

YOURS BY DESIGN
C.J. Knapp, ASID, owner and principal interior designer of Yours By Design, designed a room spotlighted here that’s appealing to all ages, by offering slivers of fun, tranquility or entertainment in every nook and cranny. “We design for the way people really live so they feel at home in their own homes, and for when others are joining them there,” C.J. promises. In this instance, C.J. and her team converted a potential gathering space over a garage into a charming, friendly spot that’s equally great for playing games, hosting a book club, watching movies, working at home, carving out privacy or having a sleepover. 314.283.1760 YoursByDesign.net

She says the urban loft accentuated here is the perfect combination of sleek and comfortable, thanks to inviting seating and plenty of lighting. “We love the combination of modern and transitional pieces, and the gold tones warm up the space,” she adds. Framed ball gloves on the wall offer a creative alternative to traditional art, and the pops of red create the perfect amount of bold visual interest. Guests can enjoy the view, or pull up an ottoman to enjoy a drink around the cocktail table. 314.395.1114 MarciaMooreDesign.com

The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
