SOUTHLAKE STARS & STRIPES

LIGHTS UP THE NIGHT WITH A SPECTACULAR FIREWORKS CELEBRATION

A Season of Exploration

Though I am originally from West Monroe, Louisiana, the majority of my extended family lived in the DFW Metroplex during my youth. I have vivid memories of the anticipation I felt traveling here for the holidays, eager to explore everything this area had to offer. This community should evoke that same feeling of discovery every day.

As the publisher of this magazine, I am encouraged to get out and meet local industry leaders. After just one week on the job, I have been left with a unique sense of eager anticipation. This issue is dedicated to giving yourself permission to explore—whether it is through a spontaneous trip, a new hobby, or simply making time for unstructured moments with the people you love.

Let’s make space for the unexpected and the unexplored, and remember that it’s often in these moments that the richest connections are formed.

Best regards,

A BELOVED COMMUNITY TRADITION FILLED WITH MUSIC, FOOD, FAMILY FUN, AND FIREWORKS

SOUTHLAKE STARS & STRIPES

ARTICLE BY SAMANTHA FARRIS

Southlake Stars & Stripes is one of the city’s most anticipated and cherished traditions, bringing together families, neighbors, and visitors each year for a vibrant celebration of community, patriotism, and summer fun. As a signature Southlake event, it reflects everything residents value most—connection, celebration, and shared civic pride.

From the moment guests arrive, the atmosphere feels electric. Music carries across the grounds, laughter fills the air, and families settle in with blankets and lawn chairs for an evening designed for all ages. Whether longtime residents or firsttime visitors, everyone is welcomed into a festive, family-friendly environment that feels both lively and familiar.

Entertainment is a central highlight of the celebration. Throughout the day, live performances showcase local talent and favorite acts that keep the energy high. As evening approaches, anticipation builds for the event’s signature moment—a dazzling fireworks show that lights up the sky in vibrant color and draws cheers from the entire crowd. Set to music, the display creates an immersive experience that has become a defining part of the tradition.

AT ITS CORE, THE EVENT IS A CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY SPIRIT.

Food and refreshments are also a major part of the experience. Local vendors and food trucks line the event space, offering a wide variety of options ranging from classic festival favorites to refreshing summer treats. Guests can stroll, sample, and share meals together, adding to the sense of community that defines the event.

For families with children, Southlake Stars & Stripes offers plenty of engaging activities throughout the day. Interactive games, inflatables, and hands-on experiences keep younger guests entertained in a safe and welcoming environment. Parents can relax knowing there are designated spaces and activities designed with families in mind.

At its core, the event is a celebration of community spirit. Local organizations, sponsors, city staff, and volunteers all work together to bring the event to life. Their collaboration highlights the strong partnerships that support Southlake’s continued growth and sense of unity. From planning months in advance to coordinating day-of logistics, every detail is carefully managed to create a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Volunteers play an especially important role, assisting with setup, guiding guests, and supporting activities throughout the day. Many return year after year, viewing their participation as a meaningful way to give back and stay connected to the community. Their presence adds warmth and hospitality that guests feel throughout the event.

Safety and accessibility are also top priorities. City staff and public safety teams work closely to ensure a secure environment where families can enjoy the festivities with peace of mind. Thoughtful planning—including clear signage, organized traffic flow, and designated viewing areas—helps the event run smoothly. Accessibility accommodations ensure guests of all ages and abilities can fully participate.

The layout of the event is designed to be family-friendly and easy to navigate. Entertainment stages, food vendors, and activity zones are arranged to allow guests to move comfortably. Shaded seating areas and open green spaces provide places to relax, gather, and enjoy the celebration at a comfortable pace.

Music helps shape the energy and emotional rhythm of the day. Upbeat performances energize the crowd in the afternoon, while patriotic selections in the evening build anticipation for the fireworks show. The soundtrack of Stars & Stripes enhances the shared experience and brings the community together through sound and celebration.

Beyond the festivities, Southlake Stars & Stripes serves as a meaningful reminder of community connection. It brings people together in a shared space where differences fade and collective enjoyment takes center stage. It reflects the strength of Southlake’s schools, businesses, and residents, and the pride they share in their city.

For many families, attending the event has become an annual tradition. Children grow up experiencing Stars & Stripes and later return as teens and adults, continuing a cycle of shared memories across generations. These lasting connections help make the event a cornerstone of the community calendar.

Local schools, youth organizations, and civic groups also participate through performances, booths, and

volunteer efforts. Their involvement highlights the importance of civic engagement and gives young people a chance to connect more deeply with their community.

As the event continues to grow, organizers remain focused on preserving its welcoming, hometown feel. Careful planning ensures that crowd flow, entertainment, and activities remain balanced so the celebration stays both large-scale and personal.

When the final fireworks fade and families begin to head home, a sense of gratitude and joy lingers. Southlake Stars & Stripes is

more than just an event—it is a reflection of community pride, shared tradition, and the joy of coming together.

Each year builds on the last, adding new memories while honoring traditions that residents cherish. The celebration continues to evolve, but its heart remains the same: bringing people together in a joyful, patriotic, and family-centered experience that defines the spirit of Southlake.

MEET SOUTHLAKE CITY LIFESTYLE’S NEW PUBLISHER

For new Southlake City Lifestyle Magazine Publisher James Jackson, Southlake was originally just a dot on a map with an exceptional school district. What he and his family found was something far greater — a community united by pride, connection, and tradition. “We simply googled the best school districts in DFW and Southlake was the clear choice,” James says. “We had absolutely no idea what we would be in for.”

Originally from Louisiana, James comes from a family of entrepreneurs. His father owned several small businesses, inspiring James to eventually build companies of his own. Over the years, he has worked as a steel erection contractor, gym owner, and business development manager in both forensic engineering

“Everyone is a Dragon. That’s the magic.”

and construction. But despite his professional success, it’s the community culture of Southlake that made the biggest impact. “Everyone is a Dragon. That’s the magic,” he says.

After moving to Southlake in 2014, James and his wife quickly became immersed in the city through their sons, Gavin and Gresham. Gavin, now a sophomore, plays football and runs track, while Gresham, a seventh grader, plays football, basketball, and runs track. Both boys attended Johnson Elementary, Durham Intermediate, and Carroll Middle School. “As a father, coaching youth sports and watching parents share success and connection with their kiddos really bonds families,” James says.

That sense of belonging and community pride is exactly what inspired him to step into his new role as publisher. “This role combines everything I believe in: small businesses, community, and quality stories,” he says. James hopes to continue evolving the magazine while honoring what readers already love about it. While print remains central to the brand, he also sees expanded digital storytelling and stronger online engagement playing an important role in the future.

“I want to focus on building luxury branding with my clients and telling better stories that tie back into our community,” he says. For James, Southlake’s greatest strength is the combination of excellence and heart. “CISD is the science and the community is the magic,” he says. “It’s an academic, sports, and extracurricular heaven for these lucky kiddos.”

Readers can expect future issues to spotlight emerging businesses, community stories, Carroll ISD, and yes — football. “Football is the culture of Texas, after all,” James says with a smile.

As he begins this new chapter, James has one message for the community he now proudly calls home: “Protect the tradition.”

Breaking Bread with House of Carbs

HEATHER FRANTZ SERVES SOURDOUGH, SWEET TREATS, AND COMFORT BAKING IN SOUTHLAKE

From finance to fresh-baked sourdough, Heather Frantz has turned a personal passion into one of Southlake’s most delicious success stories. Through her growing business, House of Carbs, Heather is redefining the way people think about bread, one handcrafted loaf at a time.

What began as a simple hobby in her home kitchen quickly became something much bigger. “I began baking sourdough as a way to slow down and reconnect with food in a more intentional way,” Heather shares. “What started as a curiosity quickly turned into a daily ritual that felt grounding, creative, and honestly a little therapeutic.”

As friends and neighbors started tasting her creations, word spread fast. “People weren’t just enjoying the bread, they were connecting with it,” she says. “That’s when I realized this could become something more.”

Today, House of Carbs is known for its fresh daily bakes made with organic, thoughtfully sourced ingredients and no preservatives. Heather’s intentional approach to baking is part of what keeps customers coming back for more.

“The classic sourdough loaf will always be my favorite because it really showcases the slow fermentation process and quality ingredients,” Heather says. “But our sourdough pop tarts have definitely developed a cult following. They’re nostalgic, fun, and completely reimagined with a sourdough twist.”

Heather’s background in finance and corporate America may seem worlds away from artisan baking, but she credits that experience for helping her build the business. “Sourdough came into my life at the perfect time,” she explains. “House of Carbs is where both sides of me meet, the analytical and the creative.”

“At the end of the day, House of Carbs is about quality, intention, and connection. It’s about creating something that brings people together and makes everyday moments feel a little more special.”

Family also plays a huge role in the brand. Heather, her husband Mike, 12-year-old twins Scarlett and Grayson, and even their micro mini goldendoodle Vivian all help make House of Carbs feel personal and welcoming. “My kids are my best taste testers,” Heather laughs. “And Vivian is always nearby during the early morning bakes.”

Beyond bread, House of Carbs now offers private sourdough classes, local pop-ups, and customized gifting through Basket Case, a curated gift basket extension of the brand.

“At the end of the day, House of Carbs is about quality, intention, and connection,” Heather says. “It’s about creating something that brings people together and makes everyday moments feel a little more special.”

MANY MORE TOMORROWS

Celebrating 101 Years of Corporal Donald Graves

At 101 years old, Corporal Donald Graves continues to live with purpose, gratitude, and a deep love for people. A survivor of the Battle of Iwo Jima, a Marine, minister, singer, speaker, and proud patriot, Don has spent more than a century witnessing history while inspiring generations with his remarkable story.

“That very night, God started the work in me.”

Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1925, Don felt called to serve after the attack on Pearl Harbor. At just 16 years old, he attempted to enlist in the Marines but was told to return when he turned 17. He did exactly that, joining the Marine Corps in August 1942. A few years later, he would find himself in one of the worst battles of World War II — the Battle of Iwo Jima. Serving with the 5th Marine Division, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment, D-Company, Don carried a 72-pound flamethrower across the island’s unforgiving terrain. His battalion’s mission was to take Mount Suribachi. During the landing, Don prayed for the first time in battle. He prayed to God that if He would get him off the beach that he would serve Him the rest of his life.

Three days later, after fighting his way up Mount Suribachi, Don witnessed one of the most iconic moments in American history — the raising of the

American flag over Iwo Jima. The image became a lasting symbol of courage, sacrifice, and victory. But the cost of that victory stayed with him. Over six brutal weeks of combat, Don witnessed devastating loss. The memories never fully left him. After returning home to Detroit and marrying his wife, Rebecca, he struggled quietly with the emotional scars of war while working a variety of jobs, including singing professionally.

Then, nine years after Iwo Jima, everything changed. After taking his landlord and his wife to a Billy Graham program, Don says he finally remembered the promise he had made to God on the beach at Iwo Jima.

“That very night, God started the work in me.”

Don entered ministry and served churches for 32 years with Rebecca faithfully by his side. The couple shared 70 years of marriage before her passing after a long battle with dementia. Even after retiring

from ministry at age 82, Don never slowed down. After moving to Texas, he became a beloved public speaker throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Since joining Roll Call of North Texas in 2015, he has spoken at schools, churches, military organizations, businesses, and civic events, helping educate younger generations about service, sacrifice, and patriotism. His speaking engagements also helped fund veterans luncheons across North Texas.

Music remains one of his greatest joys.

“My favorite hobby is to sing!” Don says with a smile.

Over the years, he has performed the National Anthem and “God Bless America” at Texas Rangers games, celebrity softball events, fundraisers, and countless community gatherings. Even at 101, he still averages more than 100 appearances each year. When asked what continues to bring him happiness today, his answer is simple.

“I enjoy going out to breakfast almost every day and meeting up with friends.”

He also loves watching old movies, keeping up with current events, public speaking, and spending time with the people closest to him, including dear friends Kelly, Mary, Mitch, Tracie, and “the Skipper of the base.” After 101 years filled with both unimaginable hardship and incredible purpose, Don says the values that matter most are clear: “Love for God, the Bible and being able to work for a living.”

And his advice for living a meaningful life?

“Loving God, loving life, and having lots of friends.”

More than a century after his birth and more than 80 years after Iwo Jima, Corporal Donald Graves continues to remind others that freedom was never free — and that every generation has the responsibility to honor those who gave everything so others could have “many more tomorrows.”

The 10% Target Mindset

Jen Cohen ON THE PRACTICE OF ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.

He calls days later.

That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.

The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.

The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.

“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

FEATURING JEN COHEN

Discover the full 10% Target Mindset framework.

1 2

MAKE TEN ATTEMPTS

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.

STACK THE DECK

Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.

3

DISCIPLINE IS A PRACTICED SKILL, NOT AN INHERITANCE

No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.

4

SELF-TALK ONLY WORKS WHEN THE BODY BACKS IT UP

Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.

5

NEVER MISS A MONDAY

The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.
