Invest in yourself this spring by exploring our community and beyond!

Investment by definition is the act of devoting time, effort, energy or finances to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result.

We can invest in a lot of things, such as our community, our relationships, our finances, health and loved ones, with the hope that the effort will have a positive impact.

We can invest in our community by supporting local businesses, schools, charities and organizations.

We can serve the community through volunteerism and investment in future generations.

On a broader scale, we can participate in public surveys and stay educated and involved with future city planning.

Investing in our finances helps create wealth, meets long-term financial goals and secures our retirement.

On a personal level, we can invest in our families and enrich relationships by giving time and effort to the people in our lives that mean the most to us. This type of investment has the most powerful impact to those closest to us and to our own hearts.

In a famous quote, Coretta Scott King once said, "The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members." In Southlake, we see so much compassion and so many caring people and businesses who give of their time, talents and resources to make our community stronger and better. We are truly a community of neighbors supporting each other!

In our own lives as well, we see parents, grandparents and extended families caring for each other, investing in values, education and growth that become more grounded from generation to generation.

While investing in ourselves, relationships, community and finances can look very different from person to person, the effort we put into these areas of our lives is accomplished with the common goal of having a positive impact that yields meaningful results.

In this issue, we hope to share some of the ways that we all can invest in ourselves, our Southlake community and the things each of us are most passionate about.

Our family invests in time together. The photo above was taken in Moab at Arches National Park on a month-long RV adventure through the West with our daughter Ava. Best investment EVER!

This season, explore your passions, invest in what's most meaningful to you, and take the time to breathe in all the beauty and renewal that spring offers. We promise, you'll be rewarded with joy and pleasure!

ENJOYING fur-friendly trips

Creekside Pet Care Center offers great advice for pet-friendly travels

Traveling with pets can be fun and exciting but requires planning and consideration to ensure the safety and well-being of your furry friends. Whether embarking on a road trip, flying to a new destination or taking a short journey, keep these ideas in mind to make the trip comfortable and stress-free for both you and your pet.

health and safety precautions

Before traveling, schedule a veterinarian visit for a thorough checkup. Ensure that your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations and is in good health for travel. Discuss any specific concerns based on your travel plans and destination.

accommodations

Whether staying at a hotel, rental property, or with friends or family, ensure that your accommodations are pet-friendly. Check in advance for restrictions or fees associated with bringing a pet and confirm that the space is safe and comfortable for your companion.

supplies

Pack a travel kit including essentials like food, water, bowls, medication, grooming supplies, a leash, waste bags and a familiar blanket or toy to provide comfort during the journey. If traveling by car, consider using a pet restraint or carrier to ensure your pet’s safety.

pit stops

During car trips, plan breaks for your pet to stretch, potty and get fresh air. Keep pets hydrated and never leave them unattended in a parked vehicle, especially in hot or cold weather.

options

In some cases, boarding may be the best option, especially if you’re traveling where pets aren’t allowed or may be more comfortable in a familiar environment. Creekside Pet Care Center offers top-notch boarding services for both cats and dogs, providing a safe, comfortable environment with personalized care and attention.

emergency preparedness

Familiarize yourself with veterinary clinics and emergency services at your destination. Keep a first-aid kit handy and access medical care if needed. Creekside Pet Care is open 24/7.

patience, flexibility

Be patient and flexible throughout your journey. Pet travels may bring unexpected challenges, but with planning and a positive attitude, you can create wonderful memories together on the road.

identification and documentation

Make sure your pet wears a collar with an identification tag containing your contact information. Consider microchipping for added security. Carry copies of your pet’s health records, including vaccination certificates and any necessary permits or travel documents required by your destination.

Spring is time for exploration – taking trips, getting your boat or recreational vehicles ready for the months ahead, and planning upcoming adventures. It’s also a good time to consider your insurance needs.

Most people around Southlake know Vic McLane. He’s been in the insurance industry for over 20 years and has lived in the Southlake area for more than 18 years. As a State Farm Insurance agent, Vic handles both personal and commercial insurance. He covers home and auto, life insurance, policies for recreational vehicles like boats and RVs, and personal article insurance for jewelry and other valuables. He’s insured small investments all the way up to a $2 million recreational bus. He insures strip centers, owner-occupied businesses, office buildings, warehouses and corporate fleet vehicles.

Vic started with State Farm’s corporate claims division after college and progressed through different management positions over 11 years. He opened his own agency 24 years ago in North Richland Hills and moved the business to Southlake three years ago.

“Southlake is a place where you can build relationships and really get to know people. There’s a great network of businesses helping each other, and an opportunity to give back through local charities,” he says.

Being invested in the community is important to Vic. He’s an advisory board member of Me Squared Cancer Foundation, which provides educational and financial assistance to adults newly diagnosed with cancer. He’s active in the Southlake Chamber, Southlake Foundation, Carroll ISD’s budget and finance committee, and the city’s Target Industry Recruitment Task Force, which seeks to attract the “right fit” types of new business development. He’s a graduate of Leadership Southlake, where he helped create the Taste of Southlake benefiting Tarrant Area

“It feels good to make a difference,” Vic says, and when it comes to making a positive impact on business, community, clients’ needs and charitable endeavors, Vic is the man to know.

““I never envisioned myself doing anything else.”
— Lindsey Han

Hey gorgeous! Yes, you! Are you ready to treat yourself to a jaw-dropping transformation at the Texas Blonde Society?

Texas Blonde Society is amazing at blondes but isn’t exclusively for blondes. The salon offers services for every shade and color, formulated just for you, to help you experience your most amazing self.

Texas Blonde Society, formerly Lindsey Han Hair Salon, is experiencing a transformation of its own this spring, with a new name and location at 1627 Keller Parkway in Keller. The salon’s grand opening celebrates Texas Blonde Society’s brand and values. Ownership, staff and services remain the same, all committed to providing the extraordinary quality that clients have come to expect.

The salon’s new, 3,000 sq. ft. location is situated where Keller and Southlake meet, facing Southlake Boulevard. Moving from a salon suites space to this new building is an exciting step for the team of expert hair stylists, including owner Lindsey Han, stylist and salon manager Katlyn Garcia, stylist Sammie Crimmins, stylist Caitlan Foster, stylist Emily Thornton and salon associates Mariah Miller and Bahar Lusho.

The new salon offers a welcoming, spa-like environment with a fresh, open design and esthetically pleasing décor. Texas Blonde Society is one of the most highly recommended hair salons in Southlake and Colleyville. The team is award winning for the beautiful blonding services they provide, and Han herself has won top Dallas/Fort Worth hairstylist awards. Her recognitions are prestigious – an incredible number of stylists submit their hair art, and honorees are selected by votes from other hair salons and artists in the local community.

Han built her career in high-end salons. This North Texas native has been a hairdresser for 16 years, working for leading Metroplex salons.

“I never envisioned myself doing anything else,” she says. “I went out on my own right before Covid-19 and was terrified, but after things settled down, the business really took hold. More clients were calling than I’d ever experienced before. Everyone was looking for a hairdresser after staying close to home throughout the pandemic for so long.”

Han had never imagined she would own her own salon, but when she decided to go for it, she filled a niche in the local market for clients seeking their “right fit.” While the salon’s specialty is in blonde shades, the team is inclusive to all hair colors and textures.

Han started with one employee when the business first took off and now has a team of seven. Everyone she’s ever hired has stayed with her, likely because Han makes the effort to build everyone up. She’s happy when others succeed.

“We're changing the salon environment, creating a supportive environment for hairdressers to work together, learn together and encourage each other as they build their careers, in a place where kindness and respect are part of the everyday,” she says.

The salon employs a level system. Han is a Level 6 stylist, creating amazing blondes and talented in balayage techniques and hand-tied hair extensions. The team is comprised of stylists at different levels. Level 6 stylists are in high demand as artistic designers who have faced all types of hair cutting and coloring challenges. This level helps guide the continuing education of other stylists.

The most important feature of Texas Blonde Society is the amazing transformation that clients see and feel when they leave the salon.

“Investing in yourself is one of the best things you can do, and when you look and feel gorgeous and confident, you are unstoppable,” Han says.

Spring into Spring WITH MANOR!

LET THE MANOR HOME FURNISHINGS & DESIGN TEAM TAKE YOUR HOME TO NEW HEIGHTS

HOME UPDATE | HOME + DESIGN 34

Spring is here, and with it comes a desire to pull back the curtains on a fresh, new look.

Award-winning Master Designer Jeremy Greeney of Southlake’s Manor Home Furnishings & Design travels the country creating beautiful residential and commercial spaces. He’s currently managing projects that include homes in New Mexico, a St. Louis penthouse, a 10,000-sq.-ft. ranch home in Waxahachie, Texas, and renovated apartment complex lobbies and entertainment areas.

This spring, Jeremy recommends going bold and exploring your inner fun side.

In the Southwest, splashes of color are pepping up traditional tone-on-tone

designs with florals, interesting accessories and art glass designs. Manor’s new, neon-lighted wall art offers a great twist.

“Texas is seeing robust color, as people move outside the box toward free and easy new looks,” Jeremy notes. “It’s a time to feel happy.”

Artificial flowers are back, but not those from the 1980s. These new silks, Jeremy says, are Real Touch in both look and feel.

“We’ve come so far with silks now that it seems like you’re actually touching dew on the petals,” he says.

Wallpaper is cool again too.

“We can enlarge art into wallpaper, create a mural from photographs and more. Wallpaper is everywhere from ceilings, walls and bookshelves to unexpected places,” Jeremy says.

Color is in, in, in, with Manor’s new line of kitchen faucets in 20 different colors and drapery rods to match any Benjamin Moore paint shade.

“Take a risk. Do a little or a lot,” Jeremy encourages. “You’ll be happy with the results.”

Sleek new LED lighting strips now fade from view and virtually last forever, as backlighting, under kitchen counters or artfully hidden in other unique places, controlled remotely or by your phone.

And sunproof, weatherproof outdoor upholstery and framing safely take your indoor elegance outside.

For inspiration, arrange an in-home consultation or stop by Manor’s newly redesigned showroom.

Investing in Our Community’s Children

CHRIST’S HAVEN FOR CHILDREN GIVES CHILDREN NORMALCY, DIGNITY AND HOPE

KIDS CORNER | LOCAL SERVICES
The Christ's Haven family model.
36
Siblings stay together at Christ's Haven for Children.

In 1954, a couple named Homer and Lillian Steadman purchased a large home at 1632 East Vickery Blvd. in Fort Worth, to provide a home for disadvantaged children. Within a very short time, the Steadmans had 10 children in their care.

Realizing that the need was greater than the space they had available, the couple began looking for a larger place to build cottages and provide a traditional home life for more children. In 1956, they joined with other interested families to purchase a farm in Keller and start the nonprofit organization Christ’s Haven for Children.

Christ’s Haven For Children is centered around the core values of normalcy, dignity and hope, providing a trauma-informed, family model of care for displaced children, teens and young adults.

As a voluntary placement organization, Christ’s Haven is an option outside of traditional foster care. Whether a child is with the organization for six months or 16 years, that time is used to share love and provide for daily needs such as food, childcare, medical care, counseling, tutoring and stability - in addition to offering college and career readiness for young adults ages 18-24 who are preparing for adulthood.

Children and teens live in a neighborhood of homes as opposed to dormitory style care. The Christ’s Haven neighborhood includes seven 3,000-sq. ft. houses with sets of houseparents caring for six to eight youngsters each; three independent living houses for young adults; two playgrounds; basketball courts; a soccer field and gymnasium; a pool and a chapel, all situated across 58 acres.

Many families are referred through word of mouth, churches, schools or caseworkers. Houseparents are paid employees of Christ’s Haven, and the services provided are funded solely through the generosity of the

community and supporters. With their houseparents, these children operate as a family, preparing meals together, following school routines and engaging in typical family activities.

In the last several years, the number of children cared for has increased by 30%. The average age of a child coming to Christ’s Haven in 2022 was 5 years old. Successes of the organization have been many, with 77% of 4th-12th grade students improving their Texas STAAR test scores for the year 2022; mentors spending over 1,100 hours with Christ’s Haven youth; 350 hours of counseling and 348 hours of tutoring provided; and teenagers attending 32 different life skills classes. After high school graduation, an average 55% of these young adults enrolled in college, 29% found full time employment, 8% enrolled in trade school, and 8% enlisted in the military.

This year, the Grapevine, Colleyville, Southlake Moms League – called GCS Mom’s League or GCSML – is hosting its annual charity fundraiser, “ The Great Gala,” to support Christ’s Haven. GCS Moms League is dedicated to serving area families and the local community.

This year’s gala - planned for April 6th at the Westin Hotel Southlake – is centered on the theme Moulin Rouge: Truth, Beauty, Freedom, Love. Admission includes a plated dinner, dancing, live auction and more.

The annual GCS Moms League Great Gala - founded in 1994 to build friendship, support and community - has a rich history of community involvement and entertainment while raising tens of thousands of dollars for local charities.

For Moulin Rouge ticket information or to volunteer at the event, visit gcsmomsleague.org/the-greatgala-ticket-information.

Admission includes a plated dinner, beer and wine, dancing, live auction and cocktails available for purchase.

Moulin Rouge will support Christ’s Haven for Children in Keller. Christ’s Haven strives to maintain a culture promoting normalcy, dignity and hope for youth and families through a trauma-informed, family model of care.

Christ’s Haven for Children provides a residential program for youth ages 0-18, offering an option outside of traditional foster care; a college and career readiness program for young adults ages 18-24; a family resource center; a food pantry to help offset grocery bills for those living in Christ’s Haven’s neighborhood of homes; and a resale shop supporting the organization’s mission and services.

The annual GCS Moms League Great Gala has a rich history of community involvement and entertainment while raising tens of thousands of dollars for local charities.

GIVING BACK | LIFE + CULTURE Ally's Wish has granted over 350 wishes in 10 years. Dinner, auctions, music and more are part of the annual gala. ALLY’S WISH ‘Boots & Blessings Gala’ is back! COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS HELP GRANT WISHES FOR TERMINALLY ILL YOUNG MOMS ARTICLE BY SALLY CROCKER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BOB MANZANO 40

In 10 years, the nonprofit organization Ally’s Wish has granted over 350 last wishes for terminally ill mothers with children. Inspired by the late Allyson Hendrickson, Ally’s Wish provides memories for families to last a lifetime. Wishes are granted in the form of trips, services, gifts or other requests the mother may have.

The seeds for this organization were planted when founder/president Missy Phipps heard Allyson speak about her walk with cancer at church. Missy and her friends wanted to do something special to help moms like Ally. At the time, Missy had four young children of her own and wondered what her wish would be in such a heartbreaking situation.

“I knew I would most want to make memories with and for my children,” she says.

This idea led to creation of the 501c3 charitable organization, which fundraises through grants, donations and events.

The biggest event is the annual “Boots & Blessings Gala,” with a western theme tipping a hat to the “Three Little Cowboys,” as Ally called her sons. During her cancer journey, Ally kept a blog recounting her challenges, faith and love of family, which was eventually published as the “Three Little Cowboys” book.

This year’s gala, celebrating the organization’s 10th anniversary, will be April 27th at Lucky Spur Ranch Retreat in Justin, with a goal of raising $175,000.

The event features barbecue dinner, program, silent and live auctions, music, games, raffles and more. Attire ranges from boots to ballgowns.

EXPLORE HEALTH AND self-discovery

Exploration offers opportunities for growth, selfdiscovery and resilience.

Spring, synonymous with renewal, prompts a holistic exploration – a “spring cleaning” of one’s existence. Beyond decluttering physical spaces, consider decluttering the mind by pursuing new adventures and opportunities. Delve into unexplored passions, be it a daring skydiving escapade or reigniting connections with long-lost friends. Embrace the thrill of venturing into entrepreneurship, transforming aspirations into a reality. The canvas of exploration extends beyond geographical bounds, inviting a quest for personal growth and rejuvenation. The sense of accomplishment from overcoming challenges enhances self-esteem and confidence.

However, exploration can also evoke anxiety and fear, particularly when facing the unknown. Practicing mindfulness and self-care techniques during exploration can mitigate stress and promote emotional well-being. Moreover, connecting with nature during expeditions fosters relaxation and reduces despair and nervousness.

As nature blossoms, let this season be a catalyst for unearthing the untapped potential within, shaping a vibrant and flourishing spring of possibilities.

“EXPLORATION IS REALLY THE ESSENCE OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT.“
Spring offers a great opportunity for renewal and new potential

RETIREMENT INCOME PLANNING: MAXIMIZING WEALTH AND LEGACY

YOU ONLY GET ONE RETIREMENT

Retirement marks the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance and sound financial choices. A key element of effective retirement planning is diversifying your income sources. While staples like 401(k)s or IRAs are foundational, it’s equally important to branch out. Tax considerations significantly influence retirement strategies. Each financial action, from asset sales to account withdrawals, can carry tax consequences. Knowing these details can greatly influence one’s overall retirement income. Tactics such as Roth IRA conversions can help distribute tax liabilities over time, allowing for tax-free withdrawals later on. Using strategies like tax-loss harvesting can balance out capital gains, ensuring proactive steps to reduce tax impact.

SOURCES OF INCOME DURING RETIREMENT

Annuities have long been recognized as a popular retirement income source. An annuity is essentially a financial contract that can offer a steady and predictable income, with options that might even extend to lifetime payouts. Retirees should also be aware of certain drawbacks. These might include fees and expenses, issues around liquidity, and potential concerns related to inflation.

Delving into the world of Alternative Investments, retirees can consider assets such as hedge funds, private equity and real assets, among others. These investments may promise higher returns and provide diversification away from traditional stocks and bonds. However, the complexities of these investments mean they often come with challenges like illiquidity, higher fees and the need for a thorough understanding of the investment itself.

The backbone of many retirement plans, Social Security Income, provides a safety net for millions. Established with the intent of financial assistance, the amount one receives depends on various factors. There are also strategies retirees can employ to maximize these benefits, such as deciding on the optimal time to claim or considering the implications of working while receiving benefits.

Delaware Statutory Trusts (DSTs), while not familiar to everyone, can be a potential retirement income source. Historically rooted, DSTs offer a form of passive real estate investment, which can lead to regular distributions. They also open doors to 1031 exchange possibilities, offering tax deferral benefits. But, just like any other investment, DSTs have their limitations, notably the lack of liquidity and the heavy reliance on trust management.

You only get one retirement. In the ever-evolving world of finance, staying updated and flexible is essential to ensure the continued relevance and efficiency of one’s retirement strategy.
