LIFESTYLE LETTER
A new year, a new you! For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of City Lifestyle Southlake from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation to Broken Branch Properties in Oklahoma every day would be practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and crème brûlée every night for dinner isn’t great for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the "sometimes" choices we make, it’s the "most of the time" choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community like Jazzercise or a gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try at Calabrese. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling and fabulous year. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

Patients trust their eyes to Drs. Qureshi and Koreishi BUSY SOUTHLAKE-AREA COUPLE DEDICATE THEIR TALENTS TO SUPERLATIVE EYE CARE
The Qureshi Family
Married couple Dr. Aaleya Koreishi and Dr. Jawad Qureshi are both well-known eye specialists in the North Texas area. Dr. Qureshi specializes in retina care at his practice, Retina Center of Texas, with locations in Southlake, Fort Worth, Plano and Dallas, and Dr. Koreishi specializes in cornea and cataract services. Her Cornea Consultants of Texas locations are in Fort Worth, Arlington and Plano. In 2020, Dr. Qureshi won an Entrepreneur of Excellence in Healthcare award from Fort Worth Inc. magazine for the outstanding work of his practice. The two met during their ophthalmology residency training at Johns Hopkins University and were married at the end of Dr. Koreishi’s cornea fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. Dr. Qureshi accepted a retina Fellowship at Duke University. During football and basketball seasons, the two physicians cheer for different teams, as Dr. Qureshi completed his undergraduate degree, medical training and business degree at Duke University, while Dr. Koreishi completed her undergraduate and medical studies at the University of Michigan. Mrs. Qureshi, who grew up in Buffalo, New York, is a Bills fan, while Dr. Qureshi, who grew up in Denton, roots for the Dallas Cowboys. Mrs. Qureshi played field hockey at Michigan and is still involved in the game today, through Lone Star Field Hockey Club of Dallas. Their twin daughters, both high school freshmen at Greenhill School in Addison (dad’s alma mater), have followed in their mother’s footsteps, playing field hockey when they were younger; one has continued with the sport, while the other is now pursuing acting and dance. “One of our daughters is hoping to get recruited to play field hockey in college, while our other daughter is trying to sign with an agent to pursue her acting passion,” Dr. Qureshi says. Life is busy for the family, driving their daughters to different activities and shuttling their 11-year-old son to martial arts training and keeping up with his interests in

running and basketball, all while managing two busy practices and often putting in long hours as patient emergencies arise. In a couple years, it will be time for the girls to learn to drive, which will be dad’s duty, Mrs. Qureshi says. The family lives in Westlake, which provides a nice getaway from all the hustle and bustle of the Metroplex yet is close enough to the freeway to allow them to travel to their office locations and the kids’ school. Dr. Qureshi’s father was a local interventional cardiologist, and his mother managed his father’s practice. The move back to Texas was a special one when he returned home with his wife and two daughters on the way. “It’s nice to be around family, and especially so now that our children are older and can connect even more to their North Texas roots on my side,” Dr. Qureshi says. Mrs. Qureshi also grew up in a medical family. Her father was a retina specialist, and her mother was a pediatrician and child psychiatrist. Both doctors are involved in Tarrant County’s Project Access, a nonprofit initiative providing free healthcare services to uninsured and underserved Tarrant County families. Both also provide “shadowing” opportunities to medical students, where they can spend time observing the doctors at work and learn from the experience. Dr. Koreishi is also involved in a mentorship program with Frisco ISD high school students, conducts trainings at Alcon Laboratories and lectures for the Joint Commission of Allied Health Professions. “Educating patients is also very important,” she says, “so they can follow along with their treatment plan, working together with their doctor.” Both physicians place a high emphasis on taking special care of their patients. “It can sometimes be hard to balance our work with family and other activities,” she adds, “but we hope that our children will understand when they grow up and see that the hard work we put in for our patients is well worth it.”
As people age, taking care of their eyes becomes especially important. Many conditions are very treatable if caught early, both doctors agree. JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/ S O UT HL A KE

At EarWell Centers of Texas, headquartered in Dallas with a Southlake office, the highly trained team led by Dr. H. Steve Byrd focuses on the nonsurgical correction (ear molding) of misshapen ears in newborn infants. The revolutionary EarWell™ Infant Ear Correction System can restore a near-perfect shape to almost any infant ear deformity within about six to eight weeks. The result is a beautifully shaped ear by the time the infant is approximately two months old. Recent evidence shows that deformities persisting after the first two weeks of life are unlikely to self-correct, and the only remaining option is surgery in later childhood. The good news, however, is that EarWell treatment results are as good or better than what can be achieved through surgery, without the related pain, anesthesia and surgery costs. Dr. Byrd has offered EarWell to his patients for about 13 years. “About one of every 10 babies will have a significant deformity eligible for treatment,” Dr. Byrd says. “There could be a malformation with missing skin and cartilage or a deformity with no missing tissue but with misshapen cartilage.” After serving as a Dallas craniofacial surgeon treating cleft lips and palates for many years, Dr. Byrd recognized the possibility of
Dr. H. Steve Byrd
correcting ear deformities with molding in 1988 and patented the EarWell device in 2010. It all started when a Baylor Hospital neonatologist colleague asked Dr. Byrd to look at her newborn grandson’s ears. Dr. Byrd was successful in reshaping the baby’s ears with a mold he had designed. A few years later, while managing the Dallas Children’s Medical Center clinic, Dr. Byrd found that one of every three babies was born with deformed ears. Some reshaped themselves beginning within 48 hours, but others remained. “It’s important to treat ear deformities early, within the first 14 days of birth, while the cartilage is firm, pliable and easy to reshape. The longer we wait, the more the ear hardens into position. If treatment begins after 21 days, reshaping results drop from 95% to about 50%,” Dr. Byrd says. The painless molding apparatus is attached in the doctor’s office in about 20 minutes for both ears. Molding typically gives a positive result with no scaring or pain, and the cost is usually covered by insurance with a pediatrician’s referral. The FDA-approved EarWell™ Infant Ear Correction System is the only medical device to be scientifically studied, with published outcome data in peer-reviewed medical journals.

IS 2024 THE YEAR YOU FOCUS ON YOURSELF AND START YOUR JOURNEY TO A WELL-BALANCED LIFE?

Feeling like a little “you time” might be good after the hustle and bustle of the holidays? Are you ready to start the new year with a renewed focus? Then a visit to Southlake’s All ‘Bout Balance might be just the gift to give yourself in 2024. Owner and massage therapist Justin Parrott has opened All ‘Bout Balance not far from Southlake’s Town Center, in the NT Suites building at 771 E. Southlake Blvd., Suite 120. With 16 years of experience as a licensed massage therapist, Justin is focused on helping people balance their mind, body, emotions and spirit through massage therapy. “The alignment of these four entities allows you to understand the small messages your body is sending,” he says. “Enhancing your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual awareness can unlock a deeper understanding of self-healing.” Through a combination of massage therapy, education of the body and healing energy, Justin helps guide his clients through the process of creating a well-balanced life. He helps people relieve their physical pain, whether it’s from sports, sitting at a computer, living with chronic ailments or experiencing other health concerns. He works cohesively with his clients to help them feel better and live a productive life. “Sometimes people are go-go-go and it’s difficult to find a balance within yourself, your family and your career,” he says. “Sometimes in taking care of all that life demands, people fail to take time for themselves. Massage is one of the best ways to do that.” When you want to feel better and be happy, it can make a big difference in your life. Taking time for self-care boosts confidence and improves your overall well-being,” Justin adds. “Massage gives you an opportunity to let go and just be in the moment instead of worrying about the future or something from the past.”
Not only does massage help clients, but it also helps Justin stay focused and care for his own stress and well-being. “When you help someone else, you help yourself,” he says. “It brings me joy when I am able to help people who are in pain, feeling totally stressed out or seeking to rebalance their physical and mental wellness,” he says. When Justin and his fiancée, Sarah, started the company in December 2022, Justin wanted to create an all-around customizable experience that wouldn’t break the bank. This is the ideology behind “The Balanced Experience,” the only service available at All ‘Bout Balance. The Balanced Experience incorporates multiple styles of massage based on the customer’s need. There is no additional charge for sports or deep tissue massage, lymphatic drainage or reflexology. The experience also includes tools that would typically be considered an add-on service, all for a flat rate based on the length of time selected. These tools include things like hot and cold stones, cupping, aromatherapy and percussive therapy. Hourlong sessions are available; however, Justin’s clients typically visit for a 90-minute or two-hour massage session, allocating time for detailed work on problem areas. A big part of Justin’s focus is listening to and understanding what his clients need and then providing a positive space that allows self-healing to begin. “Relax and let it go,” he says. “If people want to talk, it is a safe space for revitalizing the mind, or the experience can just be quiet and relaxing, whatever my client prefers.” “Life isn’t meant for us to just work, come home, wash, rinse and repeat. People often get hyper fixated on what others want and forget about the time they need for themselves. That’s what I attempt to give my clients.”
Justin was born in Ohio but has called Texas home for most of his life and has found his community in the Southlake area. He loves what he does. His clients include everyone from CEOs, teachers, lawyers, doctors, business owners and others who lead busy, high-stress lives, as well as people just seeking to relax and find their balance.

C R E E K SI DE PE T C A R E I S a l w ay s OPE N Creekside Pet Care Center
Ensuring your pet's well-being is our primary concern at Creekside Pet Care. Unlike humans who can communicate their discomfort, our beloved pets cannot express when they're feeling unwell. They rely on us to safeguard their health. Here are some helpful tips to ensure your pet can live its healthiest life.
One of the newest Creekside family members ... if Santa brought you a new pet for Christmas, Creekside can help keep your new baby healthy!
Regular Wellness Checkups: The Cornerstone of Pet Care Our pets age at a faster rate than we do, which means that changes in their health can occur suddenly and progress rapidly. To safeguard their well-being, regular wellness checkups are paramount. These appointments serve multiple, crucial purposes: • Maintaining overall health: Routine checkups keep our pets on the path to optimal health and well-being. • Early detection and treatment: Identifying and addressing potential health issues before they escalate is a primary goal of these visits. • Preventive care: Administering species-specific vaccinations and preventive measures can shield our pets from diseases. At Creekside, we recognize the significance of convenience in pet care. We offer flexible scheduling options, including weekends and holidays, to accommodate your busy life. Your pet’s well-being should not be compromised due to time constraints. Weight Management for a Healthy Life Statistics reveal that over half of the dogs and cats in America are grappling with weight issues. Obesity in pets can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, digestive problems, liver complications, heat intolerance and a host of other health complications. To keep your pets in a healthy weight range: • Nutrition matters: Provide them with a diet composed of wholesome ingredients and tailored nutrition suited to their age group. • Moderate treats: Exercise moderation when giving treats, as they can be calorie- and fat-rich.

Look no further than Creek side to keep your pets happy and healthy
• Avoid table scraps: Refrain from feeding human table scraps to your pets, as they can disrupt dietary balance. • Stay active: Allocate time for your pets to engage in regular physical activity. If you're uncertain about managing your pet's weight, consult your veterinarian for personalized recommendations on pet food, treats and exercise routines.
Our greatest achievement happy clients, healthy pets!
The Smile that Lasts a Lifetime Dental health is often overlooked in pet care, but it is as crucial as any other aspect of their well-being. Neglecting dental hygiene can lead to periodontal disease, causing pain, tooth loss and even harm to internal organs. However, a little care can go a long way: • Regular dental exams: Routine dental checkups help vets identify and treat dental issues before they become irreversible. • Daily brushing: Incorporate a daily brushing routine for your pets, complemented by special diets, water additives or sealants as recommended by your veterinarian. By adopting these practices, we can extend the lives of our cherished companions and ensure that they remain healthy, happy and by our sides for years to come. In the pursuit of pet wellness, let us be diligent, proactive and unwavering in our commitment to providing the best care for our furry family members.

Ron Gourley and his company, TrendTek Bio, home of the CurcuminPro® brand of products, are on a mission to help everyone feel better every day, without the use of over-the-counter drugs. Ron’s motto is “feel the feeling” of feeling good and performing at your peak. TrendTek Bio’s curcumin-enhanced, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant products help people do just that. The company has introduced BioSoluble® Curcumin™ to functional foods so people can both feel and live better. “Everybody deserves to feel the power of optimal health, and curcumin is one of the most powerful allies we’ve found in nature to support total body health,” Ron says. TrendTek Bio makes curcumin taste delicious in foods and beverages for both animals and humans. “Curcumin is an ancient health powerhouse and one of the most well-studied herbs on the planet,” Ron says. “It’s used daily by over one billion people worldwide. Now a robust body of scientific research is supporting what ancient civilizations have known about its positive effects for thousands of years.” “98% of diseases start with inflammation,” he says, “so every day, you’re going against your body’s odds in fighting disease. So many things we eat and drink have the potential to create inflammation.” Inflammation can be good in fighting off foreign invaders and healing injuries, but when the body is on inflammation overload, the results can lead to health conditions like arthritis, asthma, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, blindness, cancer, diabetes, and possibly autism and mental illness. “Aging is the most insidious inflammatory activity we experience every day,” Ron says. “You might feel fine, but those responses are still occurring – it’s not always the sore knee, arthritis or aches and pains we feel, but the cellular inflammation beneath the surface that we should also pay attention to.” With CurcuminPro®, people gain energy and endurance, faster recovery times on athletic workouts, and reduced aches and pains. “The more in tune you are with your body, the more you’ll feel the results,” Ron says. Ron possesses a unique talent for researching and understanding the science and the “why” behind products that can return powerful, performance-driven results. Tinnitus and hearing specialist Dr. Beki Kellogg helps patients find hope and relief for tinnitus, hearing loss, hyperacusis (reduced tolerance to sound) and other hearing concerns. The practice - Southlake’s Hope Hearing & Tinnitus Center, located close to the Southlake Town Center - includes Dr. Kellogg, Dr. Mary Allen Pollok and patient care coordinator Charmaine Walden.

For many people, tinnitus can be exceedingly bothersome, impacting their quality of life. Tinnitus involves hearing ringing, buzzing, chirping or other sounds within the ears. It can disrupt sleep and cause communication issues, anxiety, irritability, concentration difficulties, even depression. The majority of Dr. Kellogg’s and Dr. Pollok’s patients come in for tinnitus relief. “Tinnitus is treatable,” Dr. Kellogg says. “We help people who previously thought there was no hope for their symptoms.” A second office operates in Iowa. Dr. Kellogg previously lived in the Midwest, where she started her first practice. Texas is home, however, and the doctor says she’s happy to be back close to family, her Lone Star roots and warmer weather. She grew up in Carrollton, and her family lives in East Texas, giving her three young sons a great opportunity to spend quality time with their relatives. Both the Southlake and Iowa offices are expanding. The Texas location is modeled after Dr. Kellogg’s Iowa practice, where she returns monthly to see patients. She’s a Baylor University graduate who completed a four-year audiology doctoral program at the University of North Texas. Her practice provides patients with collaborative, individualized treatment options, years of practice experience to find solutions that work best for each patient, and the empathy and understanding of what patients are going through. More than 80% of her patients experience tinnitus improvement.
In this new year, there is new hope for patients suffering from tinnitus, hearing loss, hyperacusis and other hearing concerns. “People don’t have to live with hearing issues and a constant annoying sound,” she says. “Our work is based on over 10 years of research with more than 1,000 tinnitus patients.” This unique, research-based aspect of the practice helps drive its success and bring results that patients call life changing. Hope Hearing is located at 245 W. St. Highway 114 #120, in Southlake

JAZZERCISE SOUTHLAKE JAZZERCISE OWNER TANI RICHARDS SHARES HER PERSONAL STORY ABOUT JAZZERCISE’S POSITIVE IMPACT ON MIND, BODY, FRIENDSHIPS AND ENERGY

Tani Richards walked into her first Jazzercise class in June 2019. She wanted to change up her exercise routine and explore aerobics. That’s when she found the Southlake Jazzercise center and decided to give it a try. “I’ve always been an athlete. Sports was my thing – softball, a little bit of basketball, and I’ve always liked music and singing,” she says. “I wouldn’t call myself a dancer, but I did want to give Jazzercise a try.” The music is so important to immersing yourself in Jazzercise, and Tani says that’s one of the things she most enjoys about the classes and the body-changing workouts. Now that she owns her own studio and teaches Jazzercise, she advises her classes to “feel the music, let it speak to you, because it can change your whole day.” The story of how Tani came to own a Jazzercise franchise in Southlake is an interesting one. The first instructor she met turned out to be a teacher and a mom from her kids’ school. Tani enjoyed her first class and decided that Jazzercise was something she wanted to get into. It wasn’t long - just a few weeks in – when Tani was surprised to find a notification on her watch with her picture. The studio’s owner had taken a video and sent her a message saying, “Hey, look at you, you need to be an instructor!” By that time, Tani had fallen in love with Jazzercise. After some consideration, she decided it might be fun to train for instructor. “I pushed really hard to become an instructor because they liked my style, and everyone was so encouraging,” she says. “At first I felt like there was no way I could talk to students and engage in the routines at the same time, but Adrienne Menichini, who then owned the studio, said if I trained with her every day for six weeks, she’d have me ready for the stage. So I took the chance.” Tani passed Jazzercise training and taught her first class in November 2019. From there, Adrienne said, “You’re ready to teach, so fly butterfly, go!” Things changed a lot during COVID, as Jazzercise instructors learned to teach online. During that time, Tani used her talents and energy to keep students motivated even though they couldn’t be together in class. She was a star instructor with standout qualities. After the studio reopened, Adrienne was ready to move on to other things and offered Tani a chance
to make the studio her own. The timing felt right, Adrienne said. Adrienne had begun working with the corporate office to deliver online, on-demand content, and she knew Tani would be the best person to lead the local studio. As a mom of four, with children ranging in age from 4-15, Tani had an already packed schedule. Taking ownership of her own Jazzercise center seemed like a huge leap, but Adrienne knew that Tani was ready to take Jazzercise Southlake to the next level. “I thought about it, prayed about it, talked with my husband Shane and decided to take advantage of the opportunity. I was nervous because Adrienne is such a powerhouse – but when we announced the change, everyone was so excited and supportive,” Tani says. In a little over two years after becoming an instructor, Tani became the new owner, and it’s now almost three years under her direction. Adrienne, the previous owner that Tani considers to be her “right hand,” still teaches a few times a week along with a team of 16 instructors. And in addition to Adrienne’s support, Tani’s sisters, Jalisa and Shameka, help in running the studio and managing social media. “We definitely have an amazing village. I couldn’t do any of this without my team and I’m very grateful for each of them. I have a very supportive family. I consider

myself good with structure and time management, and I find ways to devote my time to both Jazzercise and my family. It definitely works for me,” she says. What Tani most loves about Jazzercise is meeting different people and being able to positively impact their lives. “It’s so great to hear their testimonies, and it confirms that we’re motivating them, pushing them beyond what they thought they were capable of, and helping them both physically and mentally,” she says. “To provide that hour of happy is what motivates me when I step on stage. You leave all your worries at the door and just come in and dance,” she adds. “It's not always just about losing weight. It can help get people out of a funk and take the worry and stress away for that hour of class. A lot of times when you start your morning that way, it affects your whole day positively.” Tani feels that Jazzercise makes her happier and helps her be a better mom and wife. Southlake Jazzercise member Marci Harper agrees with that sentiment, saying, "Jazzercise has completely transformed my life, my mind and the way I manage my emotions." And member Courtney Bedell says, “Probably the highlight is joining the Southlake studio and meeting so many fantastic ladies who have welcomed me." The studio is located at Southlake Blvd and Davis/ Randol Mill. Southlake Jazzercise is moving to a new space in the same shopping center at the beginning of 2024. Why not start your new year with a class and try it out?

H A R MON Y A MIDST CH A NGE A family’s guide to thriving in 2024
As we usher in 2024, families are presented with the opportunity to focus on change as a collective unit, understanding its different facets and navigating the journey together with resilience and optimism. Change is an inevitable and constant force in our lives, shaping our experiences and challenging us to adapt. Families may experience many types of change, including children entering adolescence, caring for an elderly family member, external factors like a job relocation, or a new addition to the family. Recognizing the type of change helps us identify effective strategies for managing it. Managing change as a family involves fostering a collective mindset embracing adaptability. Children, often more adaptable than we give them credit for, can benefit from understanding change as a natural part of life. Start by engaging in open and honest conversations, explaining the reasons behind upcoming changes, allowing for questions and addressing any concerns. Encourage family members to express their thoughts and feelings about the changes ahead. Provide reassurance that, as a family, you’re a team ready to face challenges together. This creates a supportive environment where everyone feels acknowledged.
Creating a sense of routine can offer stability, security and comfort. Establish consistent daily rituals, like family meals or bedtime routines, to anchor the family during times of transition. Identify shared activities that provide comfort and joy, fostering connection and emotional well-being. Maintaining the best possible mental health during periods of change involves prioritizing selfcare. Encourage mindfulness practices, like meditation or family walks, to alleviate stress. Engage in activities like family outings or game nights. Explore creative outlets, like putting together a family playlist, creating a coloring mural or a family craft. Mindful family activities foster connection, help quiet our minds and reduce stress. As we set our sights on 2024, infuse your family's approach to change with hope and a proactive plan. Establish family goals and milestones, providing a roadmap for the year ahead. Celebrate achievements, no matter how small, fostering a sense of accomplishment and reinforcing the family bond. By approaching change as a united front, families can not only weather the storms of uncertainty but also emerge stronger and more resilient, ready to embrace the opportunities that 2024 has to offer.
