A Summer of Family and Fun in Southlake

Hello, friends and families of Southlake!

August is here, and I hope everyone is enjoying fun family vacations, time out on the lakes and all the fun outdoor enjoyment that comes with long summer days in Texas. Personally, I've always enjoyed the national and state parks across America, and Texas has no shortage of state parks. There are 89 in total that give you a glimpse into what Texas was like before the state was settled, and most of the state parks do a really good job of showing the history of the area as well as introducing you to the species that once lived in the region, or that still do, in many cases. Texas has a lot of history to explore and geographically; it's about as diverse as any one state can be. From the Guadalupe Mountains of West Texas and Big Bend National Park to Lake Caddo in the piney woods, down to the 367 miles of coastline, and all the way up to the great plains in the panhandle of Texas where the famous cowboy/rancher Charles Goodnight made his homestead.

Whether in an RV, a car or flying around the state, Texas takes most families years, if not a lifetime, to explore. Please remember when exploring the great outdoors of Texas to stay safe in the sun by continuing to slather on the sunscreen all summer long and staying hydrated by bringing plenty of water for you and your family when spending extended periods of time outdoors.

If you find a camping adventure across the state too hot for your taste, there are plenty of places to cool off close to home. For the really little ones, Southlake is home to the only Gymboree in Noth Texas, which offers group classes, birthday parties and free-play time in a fun and cool environment. Pinspiration in Southlake offers creative art projects for playgroups, team building/group projects, party hosting and creative challenges for anyone that has a creative itch to scratch, and you don't need a reservation. Also close by are Urban Air Trampoline Park, Whoa Water Park in Grapevine, which isn't indoors but falling off the obstacle course into Lake Grapevine cools you off pretty quickly, and EVO Entertainment, just to name a few.

In the previous article, we explored the importance of connection as part of the mental health solution “pie.” Here, we’ll share the importance of nutrition, movement, quiet time and sleep for parents and how prioritizing these aspects can lead to improved mental health and parenting abilities.

NUTRITION

A well-balanced diet is crucial for maintaining optimal physical and mental health. As a parent, you need energy and focus to attend to your children's needs effectively. Eating a variety of nutritious foods can help boost your immune system, improve mood and increase mental clarity.

To ensure you're fueling your body with the right nutrients, consider incorporating the following into your meal plan. Please keep in mind these are just general recommendations

Also, keep in mind perfection isn’t the goal and, in my experience, isn’t even possible. I personally follow the 80/20 rule — which means I eat healthily and mindfully about 80% of the time and allow myself to splurge (within reason) the other 20%.

MOVEMENT

Incorporating regular physical activity into your daily routine is essential for maintaining overall health and well-being. Exercise helps reduce stress, improve mood, increase energy levels and promote better sleep - all of which are vital for parents.

Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week. This can include activities like walking, swimming, yoga, or dancing. My personal plan includes a few of these activities, including my weekly dancing date night with my husband Gabriel, workouts with “my girls” 2-3 times a week in a fitness group and some good sessions on my Peloton. It's definitely important to choose activities you enjoy so that you're more likely to stick with them consistently.

Remember, even short bursts of movement throughout the day can be beneficial. Take breaks to stretch, go for a walk or engage in some light activity to help maintain your energy levels and reduce parenting-related stress.

Meditation, quiet time, or just closing your eyes and breathing can help clear your head and help cultivate inner peace

QUIET TIME

Parenting can be emotionally and mentally draining. Setting aside time for yourself to decompress and relax is essential for maintaining your well-being and mental health. This "quiet time" can include activities like meditation, deep breathing exercises, reading or simply sitting in silence.

By dedicating time each day to quiet reflection, you can cultivate a sense of inner peace and resilience that will better equip you to handle the challenges of parenting.

SLEEP

Adequate sleep is crucial for maintaining physical and emotional health. As a parent, getting enough rest may seem like an impossible task, but it's essential for your well-being and ability to provide quality care.

To improve your sleep quality, consider implementing the following strategies:

• Establish a consistent sleep schedule

• Create a relaxing bedtime routine

• Make your sleep environment conducive to rest (dark, cool, and quiet)

• Limit exposure to screens before bed

• Address any sleep issues (such as insomnia or sleep apnea) with a healthcare professional

Prioritizing sleep will not only help you feel more refreshed and focused during the day but also reduce the risk of burnout and improve your overall mental health.

By focusing on these essential aspects of self-care consistently without adding the stress of “perfection,” you can improve your mental health and become the best parent possible. Remember, taking care of yourself is not selfish; it's a crucial component of providing the highest quality care for your children.

"It's important to watch out for heat stroke symptoms this time of year," says Tess. "Look for heavy painting, vomiting, bright red gums, lethargy/weakness and foaming at the mouth; these symptoms can indicate the onset of a heat stroke. To avoid this happening, walk your dogs at dawn or dusk, not at the hottest time of day. For the owners of what we like to call 'smooshy face dogs,' or brachycephalic breeds like pugs, bulldogs, French bulldogs and Boston terriers, be extra cautious this time of year as they do not have the ability to thermoregulate as well as other dogs, due to their shorter and smaller airways. Keep all dogs off the hot pavement, too. A good rule of thumb is to see if the pavement is too hot for your hand. If it is, then it's too hot for their paws as well!"
