Dear Friends,

Happy Fourth of July!! It's the birthday of our incredible country, and we are truly fortunate to call this blessed nation our home. No celebration would be complete without first taking a moment to thank all of the current servicemen, servicewomen and veterans who serve and have served with courage and bravery. We at Southlake City Lifestyle would like to thank each and every service professional for your time and dedication to this country and for protecting our freedom and rights so that we may flourish and enjoy the incredible community we live in.

Not many places exemplify the American Dream better than Southlake. America has afforded us the luxury of dreaming and thinking freely and the ability to implement those dreams and thoughts to create successful businesses to serve the communities around us.

We have met so many inspiring business owners and operators and are in awe of our community's intelligent and dedicated entrepreneurs. Many of the Southlake business owners we have interviewed have created service businesses that were built from the ground up. They have dedicated their lives to serving their fellow neighbors, and Southlake has flourished because of these dedicated business owners. It is not always easy to serve in business, but our wonderful Southlake business was afforded the opportunity because of all the sacrifice and dedication of those that came before them. The business owners and the entire Southlake community honor all those that came before them by creating a path and opportunities for the next generation of business and community leaders. It's the never-ending commitment to community and service of others that makes America the greatest country in the world, and very few cities in our great country exemplify that commitment better than Southlake.

In closing, we wish everyone a Happy Fourth of July and express our profound gratitude for the contributions everyone makes to support this glorious country we all serve and love. We salute everyone out there striving to make their businesses and community successful.

Karoline Chapman is the editor of Southlake City Lifestyle. Originally from Arlington, TX., she graduated from Dallas Baptist University and currently lives in Grapevine with her husband, who was born and raised in Southlake. REDEFINING DINING WITH STYLE Calabrese:

Calabrese, a beloved local restaurant nestled in the heart of Southlake, recently received a stunning remodel, transforming its atmosphere into a warm and inviting haven for the community. The inspiration behind this metamorphosis draws from the laid-back lifestyle and simple elegance of the Calabria region in Italy, aiming to create an environment where everyone can feel at home.

“Our previous design felt very formal, lending Calabrese to become a ‘special occasions’ restaurant,” says Shawn Horne, "Director of Good Times and Leisure" at Calabrese. “With the new design, we hope guests feel welcome to come anytime, not just for special celebrations.”

The remodel encompassed a variety of updates, breathing new life into every nook and cranny of the establishment. The furniture was completely revamped, and the interiors underwent a dramatic transformation. The addition of an upstairs patio offers an al fresco dining experience, surrounded by beautiful live flora and grape vines, providing a taste of the Italian countryside. Now adorned with collapsible windows, the bar invites guests to revel in an "in the round" experience, fostering community and connection.

NEWLY UPDATED ATMOSPHERE AND MENU MAKE FOR A WARMLY WELCOMING EXPERIENCE

“Collaboration with Raquel Renda, the talented wife of owner Oscar Renda, played a crucial role in the remodel's execution,” says Shawn. “Her impeccable taste and design input was instrumental in shaping the enchanting environment that now greets patrons at Calabrese. Her vision for Italian chic and leisure living shines through every detail of the space.”

Cozy and comfortable seating arrangements were thoughtfully selected, ensuring every diner's comfort. The once-open downstairs patio has been enclosed, equipped with full heating and air conditioning, allowing guests to enjoy the outdoors year-round. Additionally, a walk-in wine cellar now graces the lower level, inviting guests to explore an exquisite collection of wines.

“My favorite part of the remodel is the gold Vespa with reclaimed wine corks that cover the seat and license plate,” says Shawn. “It pays homage to upcycling and is the ultimate leisure symbol of the good life in Italy. We added a vintage Lambretta scooter to the front door that inspires nostalgia in the Italians who dine with us regularly.”

Calabrese's journey towards creating a more welcoming experience doesn't stop with the remodel alone. The menu has been meticulously crafted to cater to all generations and dietary preferences, including a new plant-based menu section and vegetarian options. With diverse recipes to satisfy various cravings and budget-friendly offerings, Calabrese ensures that there is something to delight every discerning palate.

With a passion for skincare and a commitment to using high-quality products, Cindy offers customized facials, peels and waxing services. Her go-to product line, Image Skincare, is clinically effective and environmentally conscious, as it is paraben-free, PETA certified and Reef Safe.

“I personally use Image Skincare myself and can attest to seeing results,” says Cindy. “It’s important that the products I use on my guests are safe and clinically tested for maximum efficacy.”

As the seasons change, Cindy reminds her clients that at-home skincare routines should also adapt. With more hot and humid days approaching, she emphasizes the importance of choosing the right products for one’s skin and protecting it from the sun’s harmful rays.

“I recommend using at least SPF 15 every single day, even if you aren’t planning on going outside or it is a cloudy day,” says Cindy. “When it comes to prolonged outdoor activity such as a pool or beach day or afternoon at the soccer game or park, use SPF 50. Additionally, if using any retinoids in your routine, minimize the usage of those if you know you have longer-term sun exposure coming up, like a beach trip, at least 72 hours prior.”

Oh, and wear a button-down shirt while getting ready. There’s nothing worse than finishing your hair and makeup, only to realize your cozy t-shirt will ruin everything if you try to pull it off!”

DIY Your Way To a Bug-Free Summer

Adult- and Kid-Friendly Natural Bug Repellents from A Beautiful Mess

Adult Blend Kids Blend

(age 15 and over)

MATERIALS:

• 10 drops lemon essential oil

• 10 drops lemongrass essential oil

• 8 drops lavender essential oil

• 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil

• 1.5 ounces distilled water

(minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle)

• .5 ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*

INSTRUCTIONS:

In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.

*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).
