Ask any dad what success is to them, and they will tell you that success is being happy and that they are happiest when their family is. Nothing fulfills a dad more than seeing his children thrive. In fact, children are great equalizers for dads across the globe. Old or young, rich or poor, all dads cherish their children's health and happiness.
The role of the American dad has changed over the years, from being the only breadwinner for their families to now sharing that role and that of caregiver with moms. Dads, like moms today, can find themselves stretched thin, juggling their work with their kids' sporting events and homework help; not to mention keeping up with the house and helping out in their communities. American dad's lives are busy, and with more opportunities popping up every year for families to enjoy better, more activity-driven lives, it doesn't seem like dads' lives will slow down anytime soon.
Busy as dads are, most dads wouldn't have it any other way. It's a privilege to be a dad and busying ourselves with our children's lives has always been a lot of fun. As a dad, I can appreciate all the work and time other dads put into raising their children. Without the dads in our community working hard to make their children's childhoods better than their own childhoods, our community would not continue to evolve into a better place tomorrow than it is today. The job of a dad is fun, it's work, it's happiness and it's important. Dads must work hard to make sure they raise their children to be kind, caring compassionate people, as well as productive members of our communities. This is not an easy job to do today, nor has it ever been. I want to say thank you to all the dads that get up every day and work hard to raise their children to be the next generation of hard-working compassionate people. The world is a better place because of you.
Happy Father's Day, dads!

Super, Not Stressful: Summer With Kids
Great memories and greater mental health
ARTICLE BY KRISTIE GRIESS PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTIE GRIESS, MICKIE’S MIRACLES
Summertime is one of the most anticipated times of the year for children and adults alike. Whether it’s exploring new places, taking a break from school or simply having more freedom to enjoy the warm weather and family activities, summer is a great opportunity to have fun and be productive for the entire family. However, with the planned structure of school and after school activities now missing, dealing with summer can also be quite stressful and challenging for parents to keep their kids busy while maintaining the entire family’s mental health.
By keeping your children's minds and bodies active, you can help preserve their mental well-being. This can be through summer camps, sports teams, volunteering opportunities and outdoor fun such as hiking or swimming. Allowing them to express themselves in different ways can give them a sense of accomplishment, independence and self-confidence. These activities will also help them develop important life skills and knowledge that can be used throughout their lives. Plus, the structure of these activities will be helpful to both your children and managing your own schedule.
It's important to remember that the goal is not perfection, but planning and consistency. In other words, instead of trying to fit in too many activities or spending all your time overscheduling your child’s summer, focus on what works best for your family and make sure to intentionally set time aside for yourself as well. This could involve connecting to your community of support as needed, scheduling child care to get breaks, date nights, maintaining your workout and movement schedule, ensuring you get ample sleep, keeping your nutrition mostly healthy and just generally making your self-care a priority. Other ideas might include spending time outside, enjoying nature, regular meditation and prayer.

A mama bear, advocate, speaker and CEO who has navigated her daughter overcoming the brain-attacking disease known as pediatric epilepsy, Kristie has been paying it forward to ensure every child with epilepsy has a real opportunity for quality of life. When she’s not fighting fiercely to create miracles for other families and save babies’ lives, you can find Kristie traveling with her family, enjoying yoga and challenging workouts, writing and retreating at the lake for R&R and fun on the water with the whole family affectionately known as Team Griess.
LOCAL LIMELIGHT | HEALTH + WELLNESS 16
Something that can help alleviate the pressure parents can feel in creating “programming” for their kids is encouraging the kids themselves to follow their own interests, explore new activities, and take an active, age-appropriate involvement in their own schedule. This could mean painting, playing an instrument, drawing or creating arts and crafts to express themselves while keeping electronics time to a minimum. I know it can be tempting and often easier to allow the extra time to be occupied with electronics, but as we all are learning as parents, that can come at a greater cost later. Consider replacing that often default setting with involving the children in helping out with chores around the house or learning how to cook their own meals. Summer can also be a great time for kids to get involved in gardening projects or take on small
entrepreneurial endeavors such as selling lemonade or running a car wash.
Taking time to make sure your children stay busy during the summer will go a long way toward preserving their — and your — mental health. It will provide them with important experiences that help develop self-confidence, independence and life skills, which are essential for future success and likely help account for the unplanned time that can often create anxiety. Remember, the goal is not perfection but planning and consistency. That includes making time for yourself and maintaining an intentional commitment to your self-care by keeping your mental health a priority. Yes, it can be harder given the additional free time your kids have, but you’ll thank yourself and, at the same time, be setting a great example for your children.

FIVE LOCAL DADS SHARE INSIGHTS ON CULTIVATING SUCCESS AT HOME AND AT WORK

Larry Evans
“Treat people the way you want to be treated,” says Larry Evans, co-founder of EMR Elevator. “That’s the best advice I could give anyone seeking to improve their business.”
Larry’s humble advice for finding success is in keeping with his background. At a glance, nobody would guess that the co-founder of EMR, the largest independent company in the southwest that has serviced clients such as the DFW and Austin airports, grew up as one of nine children in Oak Cliff. But as he eagerly shared from the study inside his beautiful estate on Dove Road in Southlake, faith and family remain his highest values.
Larry’s career began as a field mechanic in Dallas, leading him to found Evans Elevators with his brother, which remains an Evans family business today. In 1994, Larry started EMR, which he and Hope Evans, Larry’s wife and co-founder, led to immense success for 28 years before retiring last year. But one of his proudest achievements with EMR is the charity work they integrated into the company and kept as a core cultural value.
“We would pay employees to do Meals On Wheels on their breaks,” says Larry. “We worked with Kids Matter International (KMI) for 13 years and regularly participated in their ‘walk around the block’ at Kohl’s with our employees.”
Larry is big on giving back in his personal life, and it’s one of the reasons he and Hope ultimately settled in Southlake. Being able to invest in the wonderful Carroll ISD schools to help cultivate a thriving community for his daughter and two grandchildren is central to their lives.

“I think what makes Southlake so special is the small-town feel and the Dragon pride,” says Vic McLane. “All the kids here thrive and grow up to be so successful. I think a huge aspect of that is the small school district because it helps to cultivate the dragon pride.”
A State Farm agent of 23 years, Vic and his wife settled here to provide the best public school option for their kids.
“When I first moved here and went to Tom Thumb for the first time, I remember coming home to tell my wife, ‘we’ve moved to the land of tall and good-looking people!’ because that’s how everyone at the store looked!”
Even so, he reports that everyone he meets here is friendly, open and humble, and he delights in getting to know his neighbors and clients of varying backgrounds.
“All my clients have my personal cell number,” he says.
Additionally, Vic enjoys giving back to the community for which he’s so grateful by pouring into local charities. He’s involved with the Southlake Foundation, is on the CISD budget and finance committee and supports MeSquared.

“I live by the motto that the only failure is failure to try,” shares Gabriel Griess, founder of Excel Medical Staffing.
Gabriel served the country in the Air Force, where he became a Lt. Col, for 20 years, before moving to Texas and founding his medical staffing company, which helps medical professionals “excelerate” their careers by finding the perfect job match. Charity work is a core value for Gabriel and his company, which is integrated into their referral program, as all referrals can be matched and donated to one of the four charities Excel Medical Staffing supports.
Despite Gabriel’s impressive background and education, his preferred titles include “Chief Supporter of my beautiful bride, Kristie” and father to his three children, one of whom is the reason behind the local non-profit started by Kristie Griess, Mickie’s Miracles.
“Mickie’s Miracles is named after my daughter, Mikayla, who was diagnosed with Intractable Epilepsy and Infantile Spasms as an infant,” says Gabriel.
Mickie’s Miracles advocates for and educates parents on pediatric epilepsy to help them find help and answers the way Gabriel and Kristie did a decade ago for their daughter, who is now seizure free and thriving.
When managing his responsibilities of being a family man, business owner, and non-profit supporter, Gabriel shares advice that has helped him weather the ups and downs.
“Remember that you and your spouse are on the same team. My wife and I will say that phrase out loud to each other, and it helps remind us that we really are always fighting on the same team.”
“As a serial entrepreneur, I’ve had a lot of ventures over the years. But by far, my proudest accomplishment is my marriage to Mandy and getting to adopt my beautiful daughter, Ava. They’re my everything,” says Jon Calvin
Originally from Dallas, Jon is the publisher of Southlake City Lifestyle magazine, which he started from the ground up alongside his wife because “Southlake is the best city in the metroplex,” he says.
Throughout his career, Jon has served as a city councilman, owned schools, built homes, and even acted as a football player in the film “Any Given Sunday,” to name a few of his accomplishments.
Like all of his endeavors, Jon has poured his heart into the magazine, which launched its first issue in April, creating countless connections in the Southlake community that the magazine partners report as being “personal and genuine.”
“It’s my goal to treat everyone I get to work for the magazine as family,” says Jon. “Southlake is such a special place.”

Cultivating Kids in the Community
ARTICLE BY KAROLINE CHAPMAN AND MANDY CALVIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY MANDY CALVIN
KIDS MATTER AND HOUSE OF SHINE HELP KIDS & FAMILIES REACH THEIR POTENTIAL
Children are the lifeblood of our communities, and it's crucial that we recognize their importance and invest in their future. Local charities Kids Matter International and House of Shine hold this truth at the highest value and work tirelessly to give kids from all backgrounds their best chance possible.
Kids Matter International , a Southlake local chapter of Houses of Hope International created in 2006, exists to enhance the lives of children in need by supporting a housing facility in Honduras and an orphanage in Guatemala. The Kids Matter Boots and Bling Annual Charity Event is their biggest annual fundraising event. They work closely with Kohl's to raise money for necessities such as new clothing and shoes for kids that otherwise would not have the opportunity to shop for themselves when they grow out of their old hand-me-downs. The charity ball was well attended by Southlake citizens and business owners who are ready to share their love with the community. Calabrese's own Shawn Horne was the MC for the event, encouraging his fellow community members and friends to bid on the auction items graciously donated by businesses throughout the community. It was a great night for Southlake and the children in the community who need the support!

House of Shine , a non-profit museum located in Grapevine, aims to grow confident and self-aware leaders by offering courses, field trips, self-discovery workshops and more to help community members realize their potential and discover what makes them shine. On April 1st, they hosted the inaugural Change Bowl, an event where local students were able to pitch their ideas for improving their schools and/or community in front of the community. Local community leaders judged the ideas pitched by students and awarded funds to the students to implement their ideas. All of the ideas presented were so original and insightful; it is clear that the community is full of Change Makers ready and committed to making the world a better place for everyone. Visit House of Shine to find your "Shine" and learn how to make a difference in the world just by discovering the gifts that make you unique.

Be On Trend With Red
THE SURPRISING COLOR COMEBACK THAT WILL KEEP YOUR HOME DECOR FUN AND FRESH
"This summer, red is going to be big. Think bright, cherry red instead of burgundy," says Jeremy Greeney, owner and designer of Manor Home Furnishings in Southlake Town Square.
Rather than returning to the roots of the 2000s when red-painted walls and sofas were the rage, Jeremy recommends incorporating this color trend in more subtle ways. Throw pillows, vases, and wall art are perfect places to incorporate pops of red into your home.
"The bright red comeback is reflective of an even bigger trend of bold colors and prints," says Jeremy.
