It never ceases to amaze me just how many powerful and impactful women there are around us each day. The Vegas community is filled with successful women who confidently stand in their truth and inspire others but also encourage and empower the people around them to be their best selves.

For some, encouraging and empowering the people in our day-to-day lives can come naturally. But, just imagine the impact it would make on our greater community if we all collectively put forward an honest effort and intention to build up others. When women celebrate each other and encourage one another to succeed and lead with love rather than competing against each other, the outcome can be so beautiful and rewarding.

And that is our intention with this month’s Ladies issue — this is where we show love and support to some local women making a powerful and lasting impact in the valley.

Grand Canyon Development Partners and GC Garcia Help Students Construct Doghouses

Local students helped out Las Vegas furry friends thanks to Grand Canyon Development Partners and GC Garcia. The companies funded construction materials for sophomores in the construction program at East Career & Technical Academy so they could build 15 insulated doghouses as part of a school project. Once completed, the doghouses were handed over to area animal shelters to give to residents who adopt dogs or to auction off to raise funds for the shelters.

Lori Catton and her business partner, James “JC” Catton, acquired House of Window Coverings in 2019 after 30 years in the technology industry.

“We decided we wanted to do something completely different. We wanted to have a very individually customer-centric business,” stated Lori Catton, co-owner of House of Window Coverings. “By moving into the window treatment industry, we are able to help people on a very personal level by fine-tuning their aesthetic and functionality to convert their house into a home. It also helps to create a sanctuary from life's chaos."

Lori and JC quickly took on the challenge of learning the particulars of the new industry and creating relationships with colleagues and customers. What would it look like if we all had the freedom to just be ourselves? Instead, many of us are left feeling like we have to sacrifice our authentic selves for financial security. We can be savvy and successful in so many ways, yet financial stress can be frustrating.

Being the woman you want to be takes learning and unlearning. I help women go from money avoidance to facing their fears and achieving financial success, and I can do it because I’ve

WHAT IS A MONEY MINDSET AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

The way you think about money and how it relates to your life is called your money mindset. Negative beliefs around money, like “we’ll never have enough,” creates a scarcity mentality. Positive concepts, like learning something new every day, challenging old and ineffective beliefs, and practicing gratitude, create an abundance mentality. Developing a positive money mindset is the spark that changes the trajectory of your money journey. No matter how much money you make, it will never be enough until you develop a positive money mindset. Don’t know where to start? Start with the following affirmations:

• I can achieve anything I want

• I am worth a million dollars

• Money can be used for good

When you say those aloud, do you feel resistance? What negative beliefs are holding you back? Shifting your mindset to face those fears, challenge those negative beliefs, and align yourself to your wants and desires is the path forward.

HOW DO WE CHALLENGE OUR LIMITING MONEY BELIEFS?

Limiting money beliefs are so common. They sneak in when we’re young and stick around to mess things up for years. Plus, most of those beliefs aren’t even our own. They are borrowed from the adults around us when we were little. Psychologists say that many of our core beliefs are formed by age eight, including both the good and the bad. Limiting beliefs like,

“I’ll never earn enough to actually have the life I want,” or “I don’t know enough about this to not screw it up royally,” can really hold us back. It’s time to change that because that is exactly where we have the most potential. It’s an inside job.

ISN’T BUDGETING THE BEST WAY TO CREATE MORE MONEY?

I’m just going to come out and say it: I really dislike the word ‘budget.’ Talk about scarcity in a single word! I teach financial tips that help you get to the life that you truly want. It has less to do with pinching pennies and everything to do with creating a trusting relationship with money. Develop a spending plan that incorporates what you really want out of your life, and track it along the way. It’s a roadmap instead of a strict diet. You can adjust as you go, but creating more money really begins with believing that you will have what it takes to create a strong financial future. New opportunities will come knocking when you are ready to receive them. To be ready for those opportunities, track what’s going in and out. And tell budgets bye-bye for good.

After realizing her hectic corporate work life wasn’t fulfilling her or allowing her to be the mom she wanted to be, one South Vegas woman made a business decision that would change her life while giving back and spreading kindness. We caught up with Mandy Cordia, Founder of The Kindness Cause to find out how her desire to use her talents to make a difference and give back led her to leave Zappos to pursue her dreams of becoming a social entrepreneur.

Armed with extensive knowledge of retail and a heart full of compassion, she has dedicated herself and using her talents to create a socially responsible e-commerce business that merges her love of retail, fashion, and philanthropy to support important causes and issues. Mandy launched her purpose-driven business, The Kindness Cause, in March 2022.

An e-commerce site, The Kindness Cause (http:// www.kindesscause.com), gives back to charities easily and transparently through fashion-forward gifts. The Kindness Cause vets and partners with smaller nonprofit organizations for 60-day campaigns to raise funds and awareness for the charitable organization. It creates, curates, and sells fashionable merchandise and gifts themed around the mission of each nonprofit partner, kindness, and positivity.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE KINDNESS CAUSE CONCEPT?

The Kindness Cause came about through my journey to heal and recover from burnout. With the onset of the pandemic, I was one of the "lucky" ones who got to keep my job in retail when many were laid off or furloughed. My job was already demanding, but I was forced to take on additional work and responsibilities that far exceeded my bandwidth. Before the pandemic, I traveled frequently, and I'd joke that my kids thought I worked in New York daily. When I was home, I made it a point to be present with my family, and my kids rarely saw me working. The pandemic changed that; they saw mommy working all day, pulling all-nighters, and working on the weekends to keep from drowning in the workload.

My breaking point was a day I will never forget. I was at home frantically working to meet a last-minute deadline. I heard my 3-year-old son playing in his room, and something he said caught my attention. I got up and peeked around the corner to watch. My son had set up his stuffed animals around his table. He made a computer out of paper and pretended to work just as he saw me do every day. After a few moments, he turned to his stuffed animals and yelled at them to be quiet. He said, “I’m on an important call and need to finish my work.” I cried. My heart was broken. This was not the example I wanted to set for my children, and I knew something had to change.

I didn’t know what that change looked like, so I started with therapy. One of my most significant discoveries was that I had been neglecting my passion for giving back. Life had become so busy since having children that I no longer had time to volunteer.

I started to buy gifts for my friends and family that supported charitable organizations as my way of giving back. The gifts became conversation starters about important issues and a way to learn about different nonprofits. However, it often took a lot of work to uncover and learn about the nonprofit benefiting from my purchase, and the giveback was often vague. As a product person, I didn’t always love the selection offered. There had to be a better way. My many years of retail experience, coupled with my love of helping others, put me in a unique position to tackle the problem.

I launched The Kindness Cause with three main goals: (1) make giving back easy when life is busy by incorporating giving into the things we do every day, like buying gifts for our friends and family; (2) provide transparency around funds donated with purchase and around the charitable organization benefiting from the sale; and (3) create a platform to educate, bring awareness, and raise funds to support the incredible work of smaller, regional nonprofit organizations.

WHAT TYPES OF PRODUCTS DO YOU OFFER?

We sell fashion-forward merchandise that ranges from clothing, jewelry and watches, stationery, home goods, and everything in between. We always offer merchandise that is themed with kindness and positivity; however, the merchandise we sell for our Cause Collections (merchandise themed around a nonprofit’s mission) will vary and change every 60 days based upon the nonprofit partner at that time.

ingredients

• 1 ½ ounces Teslon tequila

• 1 ounce triple sec

• ½ ounce lime juice

• 2 ounces lemonade

• 3 ounces butterfly pea flower tea

• Lemon or lime garnish

directions

Sugar the rim (optional)

• Fill a small plate with a circle of agave. Fill another plate with sugar. Dip your glass in the agave and then into the sugar. When it is covered with your desired amount of sugar, fill ¾ of the glass with ice and set aside.

Make the butterfly pea flower tea

• Bowl 2-3 cups of water

• Add butterfly pea flower tea (can be found on Amazon)

• Allow 5-6 minutes to steep for the beautiful ocean blue natural color

• Strain over a loose tea strainer or cheesecloth

• Option to refrigerate or use right away (may need a few more ice cubes if you go the latter route)

Make the margarita mix

• Add tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and a few ice cubes to a cocktail shaker. Cover and shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Give the mix a taste and stir in a teaspoon or two of sweetener, if desired.

Strain and add the magic
