The perfect time for good bodies, beer, backpacks, and benevolence. As a transplant to Las Vegas, the insane summer heat is still one thing that I struggle with (to my neighbors with pools — my kids are jealous). Growing up in Colorado and living in Oregon before we moved here years ago, the summers have always been the best part of the year. That’s still no exception — even with the heat. In this month’s issue, we hand-curated a collection of stories for you to enjoy based on this great season of the year. Learn about the local owner of Pretty Kitty Waxing and how she is helping bodies get summer ready, Beer Zombies’ beverage offerings that are delightful on any hot summer day, summer adventure that awaits you in Mount Charleston’s cooler temperatures, and how you can support Communities In Schools this summer so students in need can be ready to go back-to-school. As we’re a few months into this adventure with South Vegas City Lifestyle magazine, I cannot thank you enough. The support and feedback from our readers and partners has already been incredible. For those of you that have reached out directly, it means the world. Stay cool, South Vegas. Cheers,

BEER ZOMBIES’ LOCAL BREW Beer Zombies is a Las Vegas-based Craft Brewery, draft room, and bottle shop that dabbles in the dark arts of brewing. Established in 2013, Beer Zombies Brewing Co. brews up everything from Hazy IPAs, decadent stouts, fruited sours, and core clean beers. You will notice the owners’ love of horror films reflected in their can art, but don’t let it scare you away from their delicious beers.

Chock-full of a big, bold hop aroma, with a blast of hoppy bitterness all wrapped up with that classic pine and citrus we love. DESCRIPTION: Take the can, open it, and drink — it’s Zombie Duck Hunter! Your trusty hunting zombie wades into the isles to flush out your beer. Suddenly, there's a can in the air! You've only got one chance to bag this beer, and if you miss, even your zombie laughs at you! But become a sharpshooting drinker, and you can bag the rest of the 4-pack.

Fried Chicken
Pizza
French Fries
Carrot Cake
Founder and Owner Chris Jacobs shares one of the company’s latest beers and some food-beer pairing suggestions. I’m a big fan of food and beer pairings. Let’s take a little journey with some classic and out-of-the-box pairing ideas for this beer. Up first, Zombie Duck Hunter and Fried Chicken. The hoppiness and carbonation bring a refreshed palate cleanse after each drink, nothing better than the first bite of fried chicken over and over again. Next up, Zombie Duck Hunter and Pizza. It’s really hard to top this pairing, especially if you add a little spice to your pie. Hops can accentuate the spiciness of a dish, but at the same time, fats cut down on the bitterness of the hop. So, load up some spicy sausage on that pizza that’s been overloaded with cheese, and enjoy. Now that we have some bigger dish pairings out of the way, let’s let a snack come play — Zombie Duck Hunter with French Fries. Top your fries with garlic, truffle, parmesan, and any and everything. Let the bold flavors of the IPA dance side by side with the big flavors and fried crispy potatoes. Here you get a little bit of everything in each bite, fat, heat, and big spice flavors that IPAs can stand up to while also adding the piney bitterness on the back end to really round out a delicious pairing. Finally, let’s grab dessert. That’s right, a west coast IPA and dessert! I suggest Zombie Duck Hunter and Carrot Cake. With a super floral, citrus-forward, bitter beer, take a sweet dish like carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, and you end up with a contrasting pairing. The richness of the frosting and sweetness from the carrots takes out the bitterness of the beer, while the cake pulls out the great citrus notes. JULY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . The Spring Mountains National Recreation Area and the town of Mount Charleston offer locals fun opportunities to escape the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas year-round. During the summer months, the mission for locals is to escape the heat to get to cooler temperatures, and enjoy the outdoors.
campgrounds and picnic sites Start your Mount Charleston adventure at one of 13 campgrounds and picnic sites. Picnic sites are the central points of biking, camping, hiking, and stunning views. There are many options for picnic and camping locations throughout the Spring Mountains. Visitors may need to pay an additional fee to access many campgrounds. And some picnic sites have cash-only at the entrance, while others may be reserved in advance. Visit Recreation.gov to find and reserve a location. The Deer Creek Picnic Area is a popular choice found approximately halfway down the Deer Creek Highway. Deer Creek is home to one of the areas with no entrance fee and is occupied on a first-come, first-serve basis. This picnic site is close to popular trails, including Bristlecone Loop Trail, Calico Tanks Trail, Kraft Mountain Loop, and Tin Can Alley.
Fletcher View Campgrounds is a forested desert oasis with nearby hiking, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing. Beware: Fletcher View is located along the Kyle Canyon wash, so reservations are unavailable during the monsoon season from mid-July through mid-September.
“The Spring Mountains are recognized as “sky islands” because the high elevation of its peaks creates an oasis of cool weather away from the desert heat. Mount Charleston is the coolest hot spot to escape the summer heat, and it's a short drive outside Las Vegas. Campgrounds, trails, and scenic views are the go-to destinations to cool off this July in Southern Nevada.” CONTINUED >

hiking and biking trails Mount Charleston is famous for its trails, making it a popular destination for hikers. The Spring Mountains are home to more than 60 miles of trails, many of which rise between 6,000 and 11,916 feet in elevation. Mount Charleston has hiking trails for every skill level. You’ll find that Acastus Trail is a popular wheelchair-accessible trail leading hikers to the highest peak in Spring Mountain, the 11,916ft Charleston Peak. Trail Canyon is one of the more challenging trails and is not stroller or wheelchair-friendly, making it a popular choice for experienced mountain bikers. Mountain bike through Trail Canyon to experience aspen forests, ponderosa pine, and curl-leaf mountain mahogany.
take a scenic drive Spring Mountains National Recreation Area is home to beautiful landscapes, making it not just a scenic drive but a great location for pictures. In under three hours, visitors can travel from Las Vegas and back and still take in the scenic views and stop for fun photo-ops. After all, not everyone has the time or energy to hike, bike, or set up a picnic.
safety tips before planning your visit Always check the weather before you visit Mount Charleston. Make sure to pack the necessary equipment and wear proper clothing. And even though you can count on Mount Charleston to be cooler than Las Vegas, you still need to stay hydrated. Have fun, be safe, and remember to “take only pictures, leave only footprints.”

“It’s because of caring members of our community that we can achieve these results and raise resources for our kids!” More than 23,000 students drop out every school year in Nevada. Students who drop out are more likely to experience emotional trauma, homelessness, hunger, and poor health. Luckily, this summer, we can do our part to help the at-risk students in our community by getting involved with Communities In Schools (CIS) of Nevada. CIS is a trusted organization dedicated to increasing graduation rates and improving lives. Its mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Teachers and administrators can’t do it alone; it takes a community to help support students. CIS of Nevada brings together all sectors of the community, from businesses to other nonprofits to government agencies to faith-based organizations. Communities In Schools places full-time site coordinators within the school campuses of over 80 high-needs schools in Nevada. The organization’s site coordinators meet with over 75,000 students to ensure their academic success by working directly with each school’s administration to provide the resources to help students graduate on time and prepare for college, career, and life beyond academia. “Last academic year, we celebrated a 92 percent graduation rate for our students,” said Diane Presser, Marketing Manager of Communities In Schools of Nevada. “It's because of caring members of our community that we can achieve these results and raise resources for our kids!”
Also, volunteers are at the heart of Communities In Schools of Nevada and their community-focused approach to helping students.
Upcoming Communities in Schools events: July 21, 2022: Fill the Bus is an annual school supplies drive aiming to ease the financial burden on low-income students and their families. The donated items will supply CIS of Nevada resource rooms to ensure students at 69 high-needs schools in Clark County have school supplies for the 2022-2023 school year. Consider volunteering at this event with the whole family! Your kids will enjoy collecting school supplies at the event knowing they’re helping their fellow students. October 15, 2022: Every year, attendees enjoy an extraordinary experience while supporting children in need at the Today for Tomorrow benefit gala. Want to volunteer at this extravagant event? Consider joining the committee this summer to help organize the fall event. Interested in attending? Contact CIS about the gala to support kids staying in school and graduating. Volunteer opportunities are available for all levels of volunteers, from a few hours to long-term commitments. Visit cisnevada. org/volunteer to get started.

Pretty Kitty Waxing Boutique is Ready to Sizzle this Summer
ARTICLE BY PATRANYA BHOOLSUWAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY DESIREE NICOLE
Entrepreneur Tricia Evans shares the secrets behind her success When you think of a “Brazilian,” one’s imagination could drift off halfway around the world to the beautiful cities of São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. But for Tricia Evans, the word embodies a place much closer to her home and heart, both deeply rooted right here in Southern Nevada. Her business, The Pretty Kitty Waxing Boutique, is now synonymous with a “Brazilian” and other types of specialty waxing services for women (and men!) across the valley. Evans and her business partner own and operate 12 locations in Nevada and California - five in the Las Vegas area. The first store launched in San Diego in 2006, and she said the journey has been an exciting one with lots of ups and downs. Some of the most challenging times were felt in the past few years as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. “Like a lot of other businesses, we did take a hit. There were days obviously that were really scary, and we didn’t know if we were going to make it,” said Evans. “But thank God, because of the way that we had run our business, we had a cushion to fall back on, and that was our saving grace.” The Pretty Kitty did close two stores in California, but Evans said things are looking up this year, especially in Nevada. “More and more people are moving to this area, and they are looking for work, especially women in the beauty industry,” said Evans. “This really paves the way for us to hopefully expand our business to serve even more customers throughout the valley.” Pretty Kitty’s newest location opened earlier this year in Aliante off the 215 freeway and North Decatur. Evans said she’s happy to see operations running pretty much back to pre-COVID levels, but she’s also not taking anything for granted, knowing that things can change on a dime. CONTINUED >

“One of the biggest changes for me personally in the last few years is that I don’t get stressed over the small stuff anymore. When the unthinkable happens, it puts everything else into perspective.” A US Navy Veteran, Evans said she was raised to be independent and self-reliant. She had been on her own since she was 19 years old, and because of that, she had to learn to navigate whatever life has thrown her way. As for her growth as an entrepreneur, Evans said it wasn’t something she had planned on initially, but now she sees the decision to open this business (with a lot of “friendly” nudging from her business partner) as her “God” moment. “I had been trying to figure out what I was supposed to do,” said Evans. “It created a lot of angst in me. I was wandering around without much direction for a long time. I was an ‘aesthetician without a plan.’ And when the waxing concept popped in my head, I was like, ‘that’s it! This is going to work’.” And now, as the business is celebrating its sixteenth year in operation, The Pretty Kitty has reshaped the face of specialty waxing in both Southern California and Southern Nevada, with the concept now also making waves in Texas, where Evans and her business partner have licensed 14 other stores. While many trends come and go in the beauty industry, Evans says the essence of the waxing business has not changed that much. What has transformed, she said, is the accessibility to products and information because of technology. She said women today are more knowledgeable and sophisticated when it comes to knowing what they like and don’t like. “We are thankful for what I guess could be described as a beauty trend that went “viral” some 20 plus years ago,” said Evans. “It’s that ‘Sex in the City’ episode where one of the characters went in for a Brazilian wax. That made this particular beauty service become much more mainstream.” With summer 2022 promising a return to more normal times, Evans says it will also be a busy season at the waxing salons. But Evans is ready for a strong come-back. She said if anything, she’s much more motivated to showcase what makes her business unique and resilient. “You need to believe in your work, and you need to feel it in your soul,” said Evans. “If you have that, it’s actually exciting and energizing. Of course, not every day would feel like that, but I think I made my point (laughing).”

MAYHEM ATHLETE
Online Bodyweight and Minimal Equipment Workouts
Sweaty and challenging workouts done in 30 minutes or less at home

Bags are packed, reservations are made, and the Out of Office automatic reply is letting everyone know you have officially entered vacation mode. There’s one thing that’s lingering: how to go on vacation without pressing pause on the fitness progress you’ve made, or avoid commuting to a gym and paying drop-in fees. Mayhem Athlete provides online programming that guarantees challenging workouts which can be done in 30 minutes or less. These quick but effective workouts incorporate compound movements such as burpees, push ups and lunges. Compound movements use more than one muscle group, requiring more energy from your muscles to recover. This means you can continue to burn calories while enjoying the beach or sitting at work, long after the workout is over. The Mayhem Athlete M30 program offers two options for all fitness levels. Mayhem Bodyweight, a 30-minute format that requires no equipment, and Mayhem Minimal, a 30-minute format which only requires a couple dumbbells. Mayhem Athletes’ easy to use app, SugarWOD, provides you with a warm up, workout, accessory cool-down, and coaching video - ensuring you get the most out of your 30 minutes! You can also find video demonstrations for each movement within the app and a community of like-minded individuals who are doing the same workouts around the globe.
