Home is Where the Heart Is!

ome is where the heart is. We have all heard that metaphorical phrase, but in reality this is more than a metaphor. This is a statement we should not only “take to heart” but should use as a guide for healthy living. Our home is not only our place of refuge from the stresses of the world, but a place where we develop habits and our unique lifestyles. A happy, healthy home leads to a happy and healthy life and can play a critical role in cardiovascular fitness. Make your home a place of mental and physical peace. For most of us, that means clean and organized. It may sound insignificant, but a clean and organized home makes for a clear and organized mind. Disorganization often leads to additional stress which is not beneficial for heart health. Although all families have disagreements from time to time, make a concerted effort to avoid arguments and outbursts. If you or your family are having trouble with this there are conflict resolution classes and counseling available. Additionally, make sure that healthy snacks are available in your home at all times and limit alcohol consumption. If chips, ice cream and candy are available most of us will eat them, especially late at night! Over time this leads to weight gain, elevated blood glucose and other difficulties which all adversely affect your heart and overall health. Finally, if space allows consider getting some form of exercise equipment in your home. Many people like going to the gym to be around other like-minded individuals, however there will be days when you simply don’t have time or weather prevents you from getting to the gym. Some people also find motivation in seeing a treadmill or a stationary bike staring at them when they get home! There is power in guilt! Yes, the home is where the heart is! Make your home a heart healthy place for you and your family with some of the tips provided. Your heart will appreciate and reward you for it! BRRR! IT’S BEEN COLD OUTSIDE. When spending so much time in the house, one starts thinking about easy updates that can be done in the home. How do you brighten things up in your home following this record-breaking cold winter??! In a sea of neutrals, a pop of color goes a long way. The current trend is still leaning toward grey, white and beige neutrals, but to keep it fresh, using accessories to add a punch of color is an inexpensive option for decorating. A set of throw pillows, a throw, wall art or books on a shelf in brightly colored paper can give a nice cohesive look with minimal effort. Another easy way to add color is with furniture in a fabulous color and/or print. A couple side chairs in a sexy brown croc pattern or a beautiful teal blue upholstered sofa will make a dramatic statement in any room. An ottoman in a geometric fabric with matching pillows or an accent chair in your team colors would fit well in any space. The possibilities are endless! Other great options available to homeowners for color is an accent wall. Paint is cheap and the work can easily be done over a weekend—a great DIY project. And don’t neglect the fifth wall—your ceiling! Painting your ceiling is a unique way to do something dramatic. Also consider wallpaper, which can be used in virtually any room in your

Ball highlights included an exciting performance by Bell Biv DeVoe, a VIP Masked Award reception, silent
and live auctions, elegant dining, dancing and entertainment by Clark Atlanta University Jazz Band. A host of celebrities, dignitaries and influencers attended, including Chris Tucker, Louis Gossett Jr., Jeezy, Monica, 2Chainz and wife Kesha Ward, Ludacris, Kandi and Todd Tucker, Peabo Bryson, Hank and Billye Suber Aaron, Ambassador Andrew and Carolyn Young, Ryan Glover, and Jasmine Burke. An unforgettable moment during the ball was music mogul Jermaine Dupri leading the celebrity pledges for Fund the Mission and bringing the collective celebrity pledge total to $100,000. Understanding the hardships facing college students, Billye Aaron created the Billye Suber Aaron Legacy Fund, which has raised $1.2 million in scholarships since its creation.
