HEY Y’ALL! February—it’s the shortest month of the year, but there’s definitely no shortage of exciting things happening here in beautiful #SoFu. When thinking of ideas for our Arts + Makers issue, we were inspired by the talented local creatives who beautify our community with their work. Whether it’s local theater performances, the Atlanta arts scene or handmade goods from local artisans, our city is bursting with creative culture. Some of our favorite arts-related things to experience in the area include Serenbe Playhouse, the Horizon Theater and South Fulton’s own Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theater. We especially love Valentine’s treats from Adonai Cookie Shoppe in Fairburn. With

“EVERYONE WANTS TO FALL IN LOVE, AND THIS IS THE QUINTESSENTIAL LOVE STORY… WITH A TWIST,” SAID TERRY BURRELL, WHO CHATTED WITH SFL ABOUT THE PRODUCTION OF “EVER AFTER,” A MUSICAL ADAPTED FROM THE FILM STARRING DREW BARRYMORE AS CINDERELLA. The difference is that Cinderella is an activist of sorts. Even the “Prince Charming” character is a bit self-aware, able to examine himself and his privilege as part of his journey. Burrell ought to know—she plays his mother, Queen Marie, who she describes as a peacemaker. “She’s a tolerant traditionalist who’s aware that there is change in the air, that the gap between the classes is closing,” explained Burrell. The Prince rejects an old-school arranged marriage to the Princess of Spain to go his own route and make a love match. Now all Queen Marie has to do is convince the King to go along. CONTINUED >

Terry Burrell is a force in her own right, having starred in many productions on Broadway from “Into the Woods” to “Dreamgirls,” as well as the recent “Black Nativity” in Atlanta. When asked about the arts scene here in Atlanta, she raved, “It’s tremendous! There is such diversity in theater here and people will spend money if they see themselves.” She credits the leadership of Susan Booth at the Alliance Theater, stressing her unbelievable commitment. “The sheer variety of parts is amazing in this city, and the opportunities are endless,” said Burrell, noting that she never gets bored or stuck playing the same kind of part. To this point, Burrell has even lent her talents to a puppet show. “I love the scope of theater here,” she added. I can’t wait to see Terry display her jaw-dropping talent in “Ever After.” Won’t you join me?

“I AM AMBITIOUS, DRIVEN, COMPASSIONATE, PASSIONATE, CONSIDERATE, COURAGEOUS, RELIABLE AND SELFLESS.”

ARTICLE JAMIE LOBER

In the Director’s Chair with Nicky Buggs LOCAL SUPERSTAR NICKY SAN GUSTO CRUZ, BETTER KNOWN AS NICKY BUGGS, IS AN ACTOR, DANCER, DIRECTOR, ACTING COACH AND HAS WORN JUST ABOUT EVERY HAT IN THE INDUSTRY. One of the unique ways she stands out is through her work with the youth in helping them to discover their talents. The New York native was trained as a technical dancer in ballet, pointe, modern, lyrical/contemporary and jazz before making her way to television. Her talent dates back to high school, when she played softball, tennis, volleyball, track and swimming. She has it going on and she knows it. “I am ambitious, driven, compassionate, passionate, considerate, courageous, reliable and selfless,” said Buggs. You may think Buggs was raising her voice and kicking up her heels from an early age, but it took a little extra encouragement to get her started. She struggled with shyness and turned to dance class to help her emerge from her shell.

22

South Fulton Lifestyle | February 2019

“By my 10th-grade year of high school I somehow landed on stage of a show, and from that point forward my dance propellers began slowly taking flight,” explained Buggs. While it would be easy to get caught up in the limelight, Buggs wants to give back and work with youth. “They are so fun, and kids are amongst the most charming and interesting groups to work with,” shared Buggs, adding that she enjoys the opportunity to get to know them and help them shine. “Each one is unique and therefore brings their own life anticipations, wishes and experiences to the room, and their wide-eyed acknowledgement that everything and anything is possible,” said Buggs, noting that she likes how the kids do not see boundaries to what a character or scene can accomplish. “The individual journey of that student will not be the same for the classmate sitting directly next to them,” said Buggs. The unpredictability of the job is one of the best parts. “The work can sometimes be challenging or incredibly rewarding, but it is never boring,” shared Buggs.

/the teacher “EVERY EXPERIENCE IS A GIFT, SO BE RECEPTIVE, BE QUIET, LISTEN AND APPLY,” SAID BUGGS.

When it comes to accomplishments, her list is long. Buggs named mastering her shyness and eventually stepping onto the public stage; dancing for NFA, NBA and AFL; attending the Super Bowl five times; instructing public school and pushing students, watching them graduate and staying in touch with them; giving back; directing and performing as a few of her biggest honors. “I’ve taught dancers and actors and watched them go on to work on fantastic projects, like dancers for Jay-Z, Beyonce, Missy Elliot, Las Vegas Celebrity Headliners and The Grammys,” said Buggs. It is never too early or too late to get involved with the performing arts, Buggs assured. “Your teachers want you to succeed so you should take advantage of all of the opportunities presented to you each time,” said Buggs. “Every experience is a gift, so be receptive, be quiet, listen and apply,” said Buggs.

PARTING THOUGHTS

ARTICLE MICHELLE TAYLOR WILLIS

I SAMPLE DIFFERENT PRODUCTS, SERVICES OR BUSINESSES AND LET YOU KNOW WHETHER IT’S SOMETHING YOU SHOULD TRY TOO!

michelle’s picks Back by Popular Demand!

THE JOISTICK I’ll be the first to admit, I am no social media maven; it takes me 40 minutes to do an IG post. That makes The Joistick even more amazing. It allows you to livestream on multiple devices. You can place your phone in one place on the stick and stream, place your iPad on another section of the stick and livestream on another platform. Multiple livestreams, multiple devices, multiple socials! Am I the only one who thinks that is boss? The really cool thing about it is that it’s named after the woman who created it—her name is Joi. The stick is the Joistick. Get it? Anyhoo... if you’d like to grab one, or at least learn more about it, use my personal link at Joistik.com/Ref/MichelleTaylorWillis. HAROLD’S CHICKEN AND ICE BAR OLD NATIONAL I’m usually driving past Old National Highway, not getting off of it. I now have reason to make an intentional exit. I don’t do a lot of fried foods, so it took a lot for me to dive into the wings and fries. I’m so glad I did! Hot, fresh, crispy, tasty... You get the point. The beautiful thing is they don’t stop at wings. The shrimp and grits—OMG, I wanted to take a bath in the grits! The blackened fish tacos are also some of the best. If you like live jazz, karaoke and music, they’ve got it all, depending on the night of the week. And karaoke fans, it’s fun karaoke, not “looking for a record deal karaoke.” So, if you’re looking for a place to hang with a mature crowd, a nice bar and great atmosphere, check out my new BFFs at Harold’s. Find them at HaroldsOldNat.com or at 5495 Old National Hwy, Ste B11. See you there!
