HELLO SOUTH FULTON, I had the most amazing, breathtaking experience. As a gift from the Home Depot Foundation and the Travis Mainon Foundation to surviving military families, my son, sister and I were able to spend the night at the Georgia Aquarium. We were blessed to roll out our sleeping bags in front of the "Wow Wall" in the Ocean Voyager Gallery and sleep in the company of whale sharks, giant rays, a sea turtle and grouper. It was hands down the most unbelievable experience that one can have in downtown Atlanta! I could barely take my eyes off the tank to rest! Do it if you ever have the chance! What have y'all been up to this summer? Email me at EMitchell@LifestylePubs.com and let me know! As the summer begins to wind down, this issue focuses on kids and pets! This month,

TBT (The Basketball Tournament)   WHAT MADE YOU SERVE AS THE HOST OF THE TBT GAMES IN ATLANTA? + Well, this is my home, so when something of that magnitude comes into my town, I would like to be a part of it. It’s a very successful tournament. WHAT DOES HAVING THE TBT GAMES IN ATLANTA MEAN TO THE CITY? + It means a lot. We have the Super Bowl coming up, and we have the TBT games here. Before I moved here, [I knew] there were some decent things about Atlanta, but now living here, [I realize] people on the outside have no idea how great this area is. In bringing people here from different walks of life, and those people walking around and hanging out, I think it’ll really allow them to see how cool Atlanta is. HOW DO YOU THINK THE COMMUNITY RESPONDS WHEN THEY SEE FORMER, CURRENT AND FUTURE NBA PLAYERS COME TOGETHER FOR SUCH A CAUSE? + I think the NBA is at the forefront of sports right now and it’s leading the way in the community. Everyone is chasing their dreams. It’s good to see my colleagues and brothers in arms get behind their community that they play in. It’s bigger than just going to a city to play basketball, it’s about making an impact in the community. WHY IS ATLANTA SO NEAR AND DEAR TO YOUR HEART? + I grew up in North Carolina and I’ve been a southern kid at heart and this place has really embraced me. Being here for almost five years now, you drive by the places that you have lived or visited and see how big of a change there’s been in a year. Atlanta has helped me grow to be the best person I could be and has actually given me a path to finding my ultimate purpose.

Planks: The Core of Your Back Pain?

H

By Zwade Marshall, MD, MBA

ey fellas! As the weather finally warms up, many of us are trying to get our abs summer-ready. When it comes to exercises, we know the plank can't be beat for building strong abs from the inside out. The plank, a simple, static bodyweight exercise, contracts all layers of the abdomen. As a result, it is an excellent way to strengthen the core. It involves propping yourself from the floor on your forearms, elbows, and toes, engaging your core muscles to keep you up. Not only is the plank exercise praised for helping sculpt abs, it is said to help with back pain by stabilizing the spine. See, if muscles around the lower back are weak, your body will rely more on passive structures, such as the spinal ligaments, bones, and discs for stability, which puts painful stress on the spine. In educating my patients on managing their lower back pain, I always advise strengthening the core. Taking my own advice, I’ve recently begun doing planks— great way to get my six-pack and protect my spine, right? Unfortunately, as I started seeing results, I challenged myself to increase the length of time for each plank. Increasingly, I would finish with significant pain in my lower back. As a physician, I looked into the paradoxical effect doing the plank exercise was having on my spine-- causing more back pain, rather than helping it. Here’s what I found: The most important element of a good plank is a completely neutral spine. Like any exercise, proper form is king for seeing results and reducing injury. With the plank, increasing the time ruins neutral positioning of the spine and creates impaired stabilization. As gravity begins pulling your abdomen toward the ground, the lumbar region slumps downward into hyper-extension, placing an unreasonable amount of force on the spinal bones and joints. In the end, this can lead to aggravation of low back pain and slower results on those abs. The key to correct this is maintaining proper form and restricting the time each plank is done. This can be done by planking in front of a mirror or using a long stick down the back to ensure even contact with your head, shoulders, spine and hips, and limiting the time to one minute or less. Dr. Patterson is accepting new patients at his Camp Creek and Gwinnett locations.

victoria mcqueen SOUTH FULTON'S ARTICLE KIM BRYANT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED SOUTH FULTON’S “IDOL BABY,” VICTORIA ARIEL MCQUEEN, WAS BORN TO BE A STAR. Born on the date the very first “American Idol” episode aired on television, she just barely made the cut for her audition this past season. Victoria wowed celebrity judges Luke Bryan, Katie Perry and Lionel Richie with her "pitch perfect" a capella singing of Stevie Wonder's, "Don't You Worry ‘Bout a Thing" and her bright and bubbly personality.

22

South Fulton Lifestyle | August 2018

IDOL BABY

Victoria is well-known around metro Atlanta after having performed at the Southwest Arts Center, Alliance Theatre and other Atlanta venues. At 8 years old, Victoria auditioned with AOC (Art of Confidence) in metro Atlanta for their version of “Annie.” “I remember so vividly our first encounter with little Miss Victoria,” says former teacher Shanequa Dasher. “She walked in the room with a smile that would put sunshine to shame. We were so blown away with her talent. Not only was she an amazing actress at such a young age, she also had a beautiful singing voice. She sang, acted and danced her heart out. But the one thing that always proceeded her talent was her consistent positive attitude, pursuit of enhancing her craft and her unmatched work ethic. Victoria was born to be a star!” As a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, Victoria’s South Fulton roots have taken her to new levels within the arts industry. She “lives for Stevie Wonder.”   “I actually love singing songs by him,” says Victoria. “I also love Torre Kelli and the movie ‘Sing,’ so it was an easy choice. I like what the song is saying. Even at my young age I have had some difficult times and things can be stressful. This song basically says, ‘Don't you worry about a thing.’ I love that and how the song moves is lots of fun and carefree!” Victoria is right on the money—she doesn’t have to worry about a thing. Look for this amazing triple threat talent’s career to rise.

C r e at e Y o u r Ow n C i t y B ac k ya r d O as i s i n a S m a l l S pac e Pergola South Fulton homeowner Richard McClendon, Jr., and his father, Richard Sr., hand built this beautiful cedar wood pergola for the son’s home in Atlanta. The space is highlighted by an outdoor fireplace. It is the perfect little hideaway in the treelined city backyard. Flanked by an eight-person hot tub and a whimsical rock garden, the space is perfect for relaxing and enjoying a nightcap on a long summer night! TIP: With careful planning, you can create your own perfect oasis in a small space!

Deck City of South Fulton resident Raphael Nuonum worked with Designer Kimberly Ormsby to create an outdoor living room. The south-facing deck receives full sun during the day, so the extralarge adjustable umbrella was the first order of business. Anchored by a blue indoor/outdoor rug, new lounge furniture and tables accented with brightly colored pillows finish the space. The homeowners’ plant rack was updated with some bright blue spray paint and, of course, a new grill was in order. TIP: All-weather drapes provide additional sun protection and privacy when needed.

Fresh sunflowers finish off the space with a bright touch. TIP: Brightly colored fresh fruits—think lemons, limes or oranges—add a nice pop of color to spruce up any space! 28

APPEAL TO YOUR AUDIENCE WITH COLORS People respond subconsciously to colors. For example, yellow is often associated with optimism, while red is associated with passion. POST A HEADER FOR ALL YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA If you will be active in more than one social media, you can use one design to unify all your platforms. For example, the header you use for your Facebook page can be the same header you use for your YouTube channel. All you need to do is adjust sizes.
