Juliet Hall, my dear friend, has a saying that she’s trademarked: “Own Your Opportunities.” I love this, because we all have opportunities to take that inch we’re given and go a mile. If something falls in your lap, don’t just leave it there! Get up, take it with you and do something with it! How many times has your destiny stared you in the face, and you said, “No thanks!?”

Théâtre du Rêve (TdR), took audiences on a magical journey this March with their performance of “Il Etait Une Fois” (Once Upon a Time), the story of three 17th-century French women creating a new fairy tale. The play re-creates the world of French Salons during a time when women, who didn't have access to formal education, used stories to share ideas and secretly criticize the king and the restrictive society they lived in. TdR performs in French with English supertitles.

often hear from new patients referred to me for chronic pain that they have been told by other doctors that they “shouldn’t be hurting that bad” and it “must all be in their head.” This seems to occur more frequently in female patients. Some tudies have even shown that there is a bias against women when it comes to treating painful conditions. No one knows for certain why this may be the case, however gender bias in general and societal norms and expectations almost certainly play a role. That being said, there are many painful conditions that affect women exclusively, or more frequently than men, so it is important that you have a doctor who is willing to listen carefully to your symptoms and provide you with an effective treatment plan. Some of the conditions that affect women more frequently than men include fibromyalgia, a painful muscle condition, pelvic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, abdominal pain and back pain associated with pregnancy. While the cause of the frequency of some of these conditions in women exceeding the frequency of these conditions in men are obvious, the reason for others is not. Body shape, genetics, and the stress and weight gain associated with pregnancy are all thought to play a role. While stress can certainly exacerbate these painful conditions, stress alone is rarely the cause. Fortunately, there are many treatment options for the treatment of painful conditions that commonly affect women. At Alliance Spine and Pain our physicians uses the latest techniques and medications to treat and diagnose the cause of your chronic pain. There are injections such as sympathetic nerve blocks and peripheral nerve blocks to treat pelvic pain and celiac plexus blocks for abdominal pain to name a few. Additionally, physical therapy and techniques such as biofeedback and guided imagery are very important for managing chronic painful conditions and are frequently incorporated by our physicians. If you are a woman suffering from chronic pain, do not accept being told that your pain is all in your head and you will just have to live with it. Training is expensive and it was very rare to see other brown girls in the sport. Also, I’m legally blind in my left eye, so I had to work harder than most. But, I went on to be the featured twirler in college and also won the talent competition where I represented our nation’s capitol as Miss District of Columbia finishing 3rd Runner up at Miss America in 2001.
