the things I could get on Christmas. As an adult, I think about everything I can give. I think my favorite thing is the parties. Starting the first week of December, it’s like party central. I always see the stories and news articles about “eating clean during the holidays,” or “How to not eat the fattening food at holiday parties.” What??! NO. It’s the holidays! That means all bets are off. There’s no calorie counting! I’m eating the cakes, the candy, the cookies, the roasts...you’re following me here. Save the responsible eating for the other 11 months. December is all in. Period. So, if you see me at the Mayor’s Masked Ball, I’m eating. Or at the SFLM holiday party? Eating again. Everything. You know the whole moderation thing? Well December is the moderation. I act like I have some sense Jan-Nov. But that’s all I got. So, here’s the takeaway. The holidays should give you the opportunity to do things you normally do or don’t do to make yourself or others happy. Give a little more. Share a little more. Rest a little more. And, yes, maybe eat a little more. Because when January 2019 comes around, we’ve got to get it, friends! Will you be ready? Use December as a reset. Enjoy yourself over the holidays and your family and friends. Eat, drink and be merry. You deserve it. Merry Christmas!

UNCF does this in three ways: 1) awarding more than 10,000 scholarships, worth more than $100 million, annually; 2) providing financial support to 37 historically black colleges and universities; and 3) serving as the nation’s leading advocate for the importance of minority education and community engagement. This three-pronged approach is powerful: Since its founding in 1944, UNCF has helped more than double the number of minorities attending college. The six-year graduation rate for UNCF African American scholarship recipients is 70 percent—11 percentage points higher than the national average and 31 percentage points higher than the national average for all African Americans! Dr. Michael Lomax has served as UNCF president and CEO since 2004, spearheading UNCF fundraising efforts yielding more than $2.5 billion and helping more than 92,000 students earn

college degrees and launch careers. Annually, UNCF’s work enables more than 60,000 students to attend college with UNCF scholarships. In fact, outside of the federal government, UNCF is the largest provider of scholarships to minority students. UNCF Atlanta’s Mayor’s Masked Ball is a premier UNCF gala and is typically the largest, most high-profile event focusing on raising awareness of the need and benefits of a college education, the students UNCF serves and the contributions of historically black colleges and universities. Founded 35 years ago in 1984 by retired UNCF Vice-President Mrs. Billye Suber Aaron and former member of Congress, mayor of Atlanta and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Andrew Young, and hosted by a diverse group of corporate sponsors, local businesses and professional organizations, the Mayor’s Masked Ball is an evening of celebration attended by national celebrities, civic leaders, alumni, dignitaries, volunteers and friends of UNCF. Today, the Atlanta Mayor’s Masked Ball is one of 17 Mayor’s Masked Balls held annually throughout the country.

It is led by Justine Normal Boyd, regional development director for the Atlanta Region of UNCF, overseeing the development initiatives of six states which support 25 HBCUs. Prior to joining UNCF, Boyd served as CEO of the YWCA of Greater Atlanta and has more than 17 years of executive leadership experience in nonprofit management, government administration and external affairs. For the past two years, the Atlanta Mayor’s Ball has raised $1.3 million and netted over $1 million to help students attend college. This is no small feat and requires extensive relationship building, hard-work and persistence. The Mayor’s Masked Ball includes elegant dining, recognition of corporate and civic leaders, silent and live auctions, dancing and live entertainment. MASKED is an acronym for Mankind Assisting Students Kindle Educational Dreams. This year, the ball is hosted by Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, and the recipients of the MASKED award are the three co-chairs of last year’s ball: Mr. Rodney Bullard, vice president of community affairs at Chick-fil-A, Inc. and executive director of the Chick-fil-A Foundation; Ted Blum, managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig’s Atlanta office and chair of the firm’s Atlanta Corporate and Securities Practice; and Wendy Stewart, president of Atlanta Market Bank of America. The event is always an exciting and edifying experience for the 1,200 to 1,300 guests and provides a wonderful way to support the organization’s mission to help students get to and through college. Moreover, the evening reminds all in attendance that “A mind is a terrible thing to waste, but a wonderful thing to invest in.”

In addition to anti-inflammatory medications, I recommend to my patients to keep moving and resist the urge to become paralyzed by the cold. It is because fluid in your joints behaves like the oil in your car and doesnâ€™t move as well in cold weather. Dressing in warm clothes and keeping the joints moving by staying active will help maintain range of motion and ward off stiffness and pain. Stretching, like in yoga, can keep your tendons and muscles loose to prevent further injury. Plan Your Shopping Trips With the irresistible deals of Black Friday and holiday sales, shopping for gifts is inevitable during the winter. Unfortunately, this can mean long lines and lots of walking, which in turn, leads to increased pain for many people. One tip to reduce the strain is to have a strategic plan and list before heading out. Another tip is to take advantage of online shopping and even the free shipping many companies now offer. Break up long travel trips The best part of the holidays is getting together with family and friends. My advice is to break up long trips into smaller ones, and use your break time to stretch, loosen your joints, and pump the blood from your legs throughout. Not only can this help your pain, but also decrease risk of dangerous blood clots. Mental Rest & Relaxation All the shopping for gifts, cooking and traveling can be hectic, which can increase stress levels. Elevated stress can aggravate existing chronic pain. Whether it is reading a good book, getting a massage at the spa, or just relaxing in a hot bath, remember to take time to yourself. Indulge All in all, this is still a wonderful time of the year, so please, indulge and Enjoy the delicious taste of good home cooking, laugh with your loved ones, smell the festive scents of the season, watch old Christmas movies, and linger in the jubilation of the holidays!
