Thank You For Your Service! HEY SOUTH FULTON! Happy Autumn! This is the season of gratitude! I think most of you know that I was married to a Marine, God rest his soul. (I love a man in uniform!) But I’m not sure if I have shared with y’all, my close personal friends, how deeply the military has affected my family. My Papa was a career Airman and my Granny travelled the world with him in the service. Amazingly, they produced six wonderful children, including my mom, who

attended three high schools as the family moved from place to place. We recently travelled to Tallahassee, where my family gathered to celebrate my mom’s baby sister, my Aunt Sonja. Sergeant First Class Sonja Horne, like her mother before her, travelled from duty station to duty station, from Virginia to Texas to Georgia, but this time she was the one in uniform with five children and a husband of her own. She is one of the kindest people I know and she brought that with her to her units in the Air Force, the Army National Guard and while on Active Duty in the Army for 35 years. This sacrifice is what keeps us free. We are grateful. In our pages this month, there are many of these hometown heroes, in uniform and not in uniform. Some are firefighters, some police officers, and some are local public servants. Even you can do your part to help here in our community, beautiful South Fulton. So remember to take a moment to give thanks this month, especially to our military, veteran and those that put their lives on the line to keep us safe. P.S. My Favorite Thing this month is my Spelman sister Jamie Bennett, the CEO and Founder of The LifeStyle Group. She is helping me get my whole life together, starting with AJ's room! They also conduct workshops, organize homes, manage household vendors and plan small events, in addition to a bunch of other things. They have

Mayor Vince Williams: A Dedicated Public Servant

14

South Fulton Lifestyle | November 2018

AS THE 20TH MAYOR OF UNION CITY, MAYOR VINCE R. WILLIAMS IS CURRENTLY SERVING OUT HIS SECOND TERM IN OFFICE. During his time as mayor, this Tennessee native has been able to turn Union City’s economy around, rescuing it from financial troubles and a declining economy. He’s been credited with helping to provide an 81% increase in the city’s financials while also creating a significant increase in employment. He’s since coined the slogan, “You’ll like what U.C.” While his constituents refer to him as “Mayor Williams” in the streets and in his office, at home, he’s “Vince” to his wife, Sharon, and “Daddy” to his daughter, Nia. A graduate of Lemoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee, with a B.A. in Political Science, Williams brings over 25 years of experience in corporate America with a background in nonprofit administration, legal and regulatory compliance work, and public relations to the Union City Council. Outside of public service, Mayor Williams also operates as an entrepreneur with interests in real estate and health. Before taking on the office of mayor, Williams became very familiar with public service, holding positions in numerous committees and boards, such as Connect South Fulton, Georgia Municipal Association, National League of Cities Board of Directors, South Fulton Municipal Association, South Fulton Regional Water Authority and the Southwest Christian Care Board of Advisors. He made a significant impact during his tenure on the City Council in an elected position that allowed him to advocate for creating a stronger economic base in Union City. His work there awarded him two terms. While serving as mayor pro tem, Williams took office in 2013 after the resignation of former Mayor Moore, after which he was officially elected as Union City mayor in November 2013. As mayor, some of Williams’ major wins include creating partnerships within Georgia’s growing film and television industry to bring jobs to Union City and fostering relationships with Universal Forestry Products, General Electric, Kraft Foods, Procter and Gamble, Walmart ecommerce and Amazon, who have all settled in Union City. South Fulton Lifestyle | November 2018

If you had a total loss of yo u r h o m e t o d a y, d o yo u know if you have enough insurance to rebuild your home and replace its contents?

The key to adequate coverage is an accurate estimate of the cost to rebuild your home in case of a total loss. Most policyholders rely on their insurance agent to estimate their home's replacement cost. This may not be beneficial for you, especially if their goal was to merely reduce your premium in an effort to gain your business. Make sure your policy has adequate replacement cost and not just actual cost coverage (the amount you paid for the home). Typically, actual cost coverage is cheaper. The replacement cost typically provides for the following coverages: 10% of the replacement cost for other structures on your property (i.e., a shed), 20% for additional living expenses when you can’t live in your home (i.e., a hotel stay) and 50% to 70% for contents. Make sure you periodically take inventory (and keep a detailed list for your records) of your possessions to ensure that you have enough coverage. Have valuables such as jewelry and furs appraised and, if necessary, add a personal property endorsement or floater onto your policy to cover their loss for any reason. This is important because

C H I E F O F P O L I C E CITY OF SOUTH FULTON POLICE DEPARTMENT I’m from Atlanta, a product of the Atlanta Public School System, graduating from Northside High School. I grew up in East Atlanta, I went to Georgia State University and I received my Masters from Columbus State University. I am married to Tanya Meadows and we have four sons: William, Marcus, Adrian and Branden. My family has been in the funeral business since the early 1900’s so you can imagine I had an interesting upbringing. Growing up around the funeral sparked my interest in homicide investigations and that’s the main reason I got into law enforcement. I’ve only been the Chief in the City of South Fulton for a few months and I’m extremely excited about the future of

CAPTAIN COTTON TUKES An Atlanta native, I am the third child of Virgil Cotton and Senior Pastor Ruby Cotton. My mother is 91 years old and has been my rock throughout my career. I am a mother of three children and six grandchildren who I love dearly. They are my reason for living. I have served in the community in law enforcement for over 35 years with Fulton County Police Department and now serve the community as a Captain with the City of South Fulton Police Department. I became a public servant to serve my fellow man with love, compassion and the utmost professionalism. It is my belief that people want and need to know that you care about them.

first, and he was very respected in the community. Citizens knew and respected his name. He mastered community policing by not taking an authoritarian position, but respecting and understanding the citizens he came in contact with. I implement my grandfather’s values with every citizen. Over the past five years I’ve learned that communication is the most powerful tool I can carry, and the community is my most powerful ally. I transitioned over to the South Fulton Police Department to continue watering the seeds that were planted here in the City of South Fulton and for career development. Many of the officers that transitioned from the Fulton County Police Department have established unbreakable, family-like bonds, and with this department being brand new, we have the opportunity to establish something great. We are the pioneers of this police department. We will set the tone and cast a vision of how this police department will be successful. I love South Fulton because I was raised in the area, and because I’m invested in the community. My parents live in South Fulton, and they’re proud to say that their son works in their community.

SERVING AND PROTECTING

(CON TI N U ED)

C. WESLEY STUBBS

DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF OF O P E R AT I O N S A N D E M S I was born in El Paso, TX but moved to the Atlanta area when I was 4. I was raised in south Fulton, attending Fulton County schools and graduating from Feldwood High School. I’m married and have a 16-year-old son. I started with the Fulton County Fire Department in 1981 and worked through the ranks. My passion is to make this department the best in the metro area and provide the citizens the service they expect from a top-ranked fire department. I became a public servant because I volunteered with the Fulton County Fire Department and found that I loved helping people and wanted to make this my career.

CAPTAIN ANDREA HALL I am from Albany, GA often called “The Good Life City.” I am the eldest of four. My sister is currently a firefighter/ Lieutenant working in Code Enforcement in the Fire Marshall’s office and I have a brother-in-law who is a firefighter working in Investigations in the Fire Marshall’s office. I was attending a university and I had a cousin that was a firefighter. He essentially dared me to compete for a position. At 19, I became the first and only female firefighter to complete recruit school and work in field operations in the history of that department. I started in the fire service in my hometown in 1993 and in Fulton County since 1999. I became a charter member of the City of South Fulton Fire Rescue Department in February of 2018. I've been Captain with the department since 2004, the first and only African American female officer in the history of the department.

JOALEEN CARR I’ve been an EMT for 25 years, firefighter for 18 years, and a HazMat tech for 7 years. I’m currently an FF3 and I am the driver of Truck 11 on the A shift. I grew up in nearby Coweta county and I still live there. This job requires a team to work together to accomplish the desired result. This job is bigger than one person. Citizens call us when they are desperate and need help. If we can make a positive difference in their lives, we have done our job. I have several passions: family, cooking and trying new recipes. And I enjoy working out since I’m a personal trainer. One of the best things about South Fulton is my co-workers. We spend a lot of time living and working together. We are bonded through the good times and the bad.

ERIC STOLZE I’m from Leesburg, GA right next to Albany, GA. My parents have been married for 29 years and I have one younger sister. She is in public safety, working as an Advanced EMT and finishing paramedic school. I have been working with the City of South Fulton since February and I have been in fire service for nearly four years. My passion is family and helping others. It’s an absolute pleasure to be the person to come help someone in need. The South Fulton Fire Department’s motto fits perfectly into my personal values: Service to All, Second to None. After I got out of the Marine Corps, I knew I wanted to continue to serve on the local level and the fire department was a clear choice. I love the citizens of South Fulton! Everywhere we go, the citizens are always cheerful and make us feel welcome. Whether we are on a call or just buying groceries, the community lets us know that they support us.

A Mind Filled with Gratitude

D

By Pickens A. Patterson III, MD

id you know that our mind and our thoughts have a significant impact on our overall health? Not only is our mental health dependent upon our daily thoughts and thought patterns, but so is our physical well-being. Mind, body, and soul are intimately woven together and are interdependent upon one another. If we do not nourish our mind and our soul, our body will suffer. Likewise, if we do not properly nourish and take care of our body, our mind and soul will suffer as well. One way to keep your mind and thoughts on the right track, and thus your body and emotional health is to train your mind to be a mind filled with gratitude. A simple way to start this process is to wake up every morning and before getting out of bed thinking of at least three things for which you are thankful. In order to ensure that you make this a routine, write your plans on a piece of paper and place it next to your alarm clock so it is the first thing you see in the morning. Even if this seems difficult in the beginning, it will get easier as you practice. As you go about your daily routine, force yourself to remember and acknowledge things for which you are thankful as well. If you have a car remind yourself that you are thankful. If you are walking remind yourself to be grateful that you are able to walk. Before you know it, rather than focusing on missteps, and negativity you will soon be focused on how much you have to be thankful for.

THANK YOUR GUY THIS THANKSGIVING WITH BOURBON MEN’S MANI/PEDI COMBO FOR $40

There is power in the mind and in gratitude. In pain management we use another form of mind over body called biofeedback to treat many conditions. Biofeedback teaches us to use our mind to control our thoughts, breathing, heart rate and ultimately our pain. As we think about Thanksgiving and showing gratitude for all that we have, consider making gratitude a state of being for you. Your mind, body, and soul will thank you! Dr. Patterson is accepting new patients at his Camp Creek and Gwinnett locations.
