’all, School bells? Already? It seems like we just celebrated graduations and last day of school parties together. There are not enough lazy summer days anymore. Look outside! It’s blazing and the mercury is not dropping anytime soon. The water temperature at the beach is probably perfect. What happened to my plans to find a porch swing, a glass of lemonade, and a spare moment to relax? I’m scrambling like a remix of the Grinch, who simply must keep the first day of school from coming; but how?

Since it’s coming whether we like it or not, might as well get prepared. My dad would say, to quote the Borg from “Star Trek,” “Resistance is futile.” Check out our Back to School issue to get ready. The luxe fashion spread coordinated and shot by Tiffany Powell Photography on location at one of my favorite places to shop, Avenue Peachtree City, is sure to give you some fashion ideas if you’ve got teens that must have just the right outfit for high school. If your child is thinking about college, check out Dr. Lori James’ article on how to prepare for that process. And kids of all ages can be inspired by Archie Bouie of Georgia Military College. In the meantime, here's one of my “Favorite Things” for back to school: Bentgo’s line of lunchboxes (the Bentgo Original, Bentgo Kids, and Bentgo Salad) are compartmentalized lunchboxes that allow food to be transported without mixing. Each compartment is also a single-serving, to encourage a balanced meal of various dishes. Plus they’re very easy to transport and super sleek. Culinary Creations ARTICLE LYDIA WALKER ’ve always been around food,” says this cheery New Jersey transplant. “Both of my parents were cooks; I would go where they were working and watch them.” By the time he was a teenager, David Rose says he was allowed to be sous chef on occasion, the title making him second in authority to the head chef. Adolescence, in fact, found him soaking up culinary skills that would “prep” him for his future career in the kitchen and beyond, like the “Food Network Star.” “Food Network Star” is the uber-popular television program that features talented people making food preparation at once “a piece o’ cake” and exciting—so exciting that cooks from all over the country vie to compete on the program. The heated competition portrays dedicated cooks who face possible elimination as they stir fry, bake, broil, whip and sometimes melt under the pressure, the winners having determinedly lasted through three demanding episodes. Rose is among the 12 finalists this season. How he arrived at this pinnacle of culinary success seems obvious to Rose. “It takes a lot of hard work and long hours,” says Rose. “You have to improvise sometimes; the more the pressure, the better.” Downplaying the understandable tension palpating in a roomful of winner cooks, Rose sounds like a motivational speaker. “You have to think on your feet and believe in yourself,” he says. Believing in himself seems a given for Rose, the youngest of eight siblings whose Jamaican parents, siblings and other relatives relocated to Atlanta after he moved to the city in 2003. “I had a cousin at Morehouse

Only 21 years old at the time, Rose says his culinary resume will soon include a book and cookware. He finds many opportunities for experimenting with various herbs and seasonings and compares recipe creation to playing jazz. “You never make the same dish the exact same way,” says Rose. This maxim will be tested Sunday, August 13 at 9 p.m. “It’s not about the pressure; it’s how you react,” says Rose. No cook knows what they are expected to cook until the moment of competition. He plans to keep his routine of daily fitness workouts to maintain stamina and he hopes to find time for a ride on his motorcycle here and there. His nickname, “Swole” (as in “swollen,” a reference to his buff physique) comes from the motorcycle club. Rose’s health maintenance hardly resonates with the stereotype of the alcohol-abusing cook. Rose explains it this way: “Alcoholic beverages are served in most restaurants, and cooks have to know what wine, for example, goes best with a particular food.” Jamaican dishes are among his favorite to serve: “Rum anyone?” Rose also loves the diverse culture of his childhood in Teaneck, New Jersey, “the home of the Isley Brothers,” he likes to say. This diversity extends to food. “I’m open to try—eat as well as cook—foods from different cultures.” Friends and family regularly savor his cooking. “I enjoy giving joy to people.” But joy comes after preparation, the proof of the proverbial pudding. Aware that food preparation is both art and science, creativity and molecular gastronomy, Rose says, “When a dish is presented, you first eat with your eyes.” All eyes will be on “Food Network Star” cooking in Los Angeles when Rose lights up the stove. Big on contrast and texture, creamy/crunchy with sensitivity to allergies and client input, Rose doesn’t sound like he’ll be running around like a headless chicken. He plans to be executing, cool as a cucumber. When Rose says, “I love to cook,” we believe him. 16

Pain Management During an Opioid Crisis

s many people in our community and across the nation know, we are in the midst of an opioid crisis. An estimated 59,000 Americans died from a drug overdose in 2016. It has been said that some patients initially prescribed opioids for legitimate painful conditions later turn to heroin when they can no longer afford or have access to prescription medications that they have become addicted to. The physicians at Alliance Spine and Pain Centers take this crisis very seriously and take all possible measures to protect you, your family and our community during this critical time in our nation. One of our most important responsibilities as your pain physician is to insure that you or your family member do not become addicted to opioid medications. The initial and most important step that we take is to thoroughly evaluate you, your history, and your painful condition and determine if opioid medications are needed at all. Many painful conditions can be treated with interventional techniques such as epidural steroid injections, facet blocks, and spinal cord stimulation. There are well over 20 different types of interventions used to treat pain and our physicians are experienced and trained in all of them. Additionally, if one of our doctors determine that opioids are necessary you or your family member will be monitored very closely for any signs of substance abuse or addiction. We have a pain psychologist as a member of our practice to help us identify patients who may need treatment for addiction issues very early in the process, improving the likelihood successful treatment. Additionally, as a patient there are several actions that you can take to insure safe treatment and reduce the likelihood of opioid misuse, addiction and diversion. Most importantly, always take your medications only as prescribed. Inform your physicians of all medications that you are taking to avoid potentially dangerous interactions. Never share your medications with anyone or take anyone else's medication. Keep your medications locked in a lock box to avoid them being taken by anyone, especially children and teenagers. Develop a relationship with your pharmacist who can assist you in identifying potential drug interactions. Inform your doctor of any side effects you have from your pain medication such as drowsiness, dizziness, or shortness of breath as these may be early signs that a medication is not appropriate for you. Finally, be open to other forms of treatment for chronic pain such as physical therapy, non-opiate based medications, and injections such as those offered by the physicians at Alliance Spine and Pain which will reduce or eliminate your need for opiates and get you back to living life to the fullest!

Fulton. Hailing from Eustis, Florida, Dr. Poe settled in Atlanta in 1969 to fulfill a lifelong dream of helping children live healthy lives. He has done so in a manner that is unprecedented. In fact, it was so unprecedented that he is the recipient of countless awards from the Georgia State Medical Association as well as the Atlanta Medical Association. In 1980, Dr. Poe was named Physician of the Year by the Georgia General Assembly after spearheading the fight for legislation that resulted in the Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) benefit, which enabled Medicaid patients to receive immunizations in doctors’ offices while simultaneously allowing the physicians to be compensated. For his longevity and for playing a vital role in the healthcare and well-being of the community, Dr. Poe was among nine other doctors who are paid homage to at Doctor’s Memorial Park (at the corner of Fairburn Road and Benjamin E. Mays Drive) in January. Dr. Poe served many years as a board member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Atlanta Medical Association. His current board memberships include Health First Foundation and the Georgia State Medical Association. In 2013, he served as the Honorary President of the Georgia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Poe earned his undergraduate degree from Tennessee State University, and he received his formal medical training at Meharry Medical College. A widower, Dr. Poe is the proud father of two adult children: an attorney and an educator/journalist, and two granddaughters: a pre-med student and a prep school student who aspires to pursue law and politics.

While giving back to the community through the donation of clothes is not new, allowing girls and women who need a little help to “shop” for clothes with no price tags with the assistance of a stylist and be made to feel special is a wonderful enhancement to this concept. Partnering with community organizations, transitional housing and shelters, these Sprees provided by Free Fab’rik and the creation of a space and experience that builds girl’s self-esteem, confidence and wardrobe are a unique way for Spinola and Fab’rik owners to support the mission of Free Fab’rik and give back to members of their communities. 1. Develop a written inventory of where you are academically. How are your grades? What

are your GPA and class rank? How many APs and honors courses have you taken? What type of schedule did you select for your senior year? You may not be able to take mostly elective courses. Remember, it’s not over until the acceptance letters arrive in your mailbox. 1a. Review the average acceptance criteria for colleges you are interested in

attending, then check it with your inventory. ( You wrote that down, right?) You can find this information easily on colleges’ websites, and sites such as College Navigator (nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator), College Insight (College-Insight.org), and College Board’s Big Future (BigFuture.collegeboard.org). 1b. Decide how much money you need. This will increase or decrease your search.

Although there is nothing wrong with it, she may have to attend a junior college or a local state college, but I really want her to get accepted into colleges she wants to attend. Unfortunately, I’m afraid it’s too late! Are you in the process of having this discussion with your high school senior? Most college planners will tell you that the best time to begin preparing for college is in 9th grade. I believe the preparation process really begins in elementary school. Nevertheless, it is absolutely not too late! However, the preparation and application process must begin immediately! If your senior follows these steps, you should expect a favorable outcome.

2. Prepare to take the SAT and ACT. You can find information on the College Board’s

(CollegeBoard.org) website. Use free test prep online courses offered on CollegeBoard. org and KhanAcademy.org. You only have a few opportunities to take these tests, so be sure to prepare. Going in cold turkey is rarely a good idea, especially as a senior. 2a. Take the test as soon as possible, in case you want to take it over. ACT test dates for

2017 are: September 9, October 28, and December 9. SAT test dates for 2017 are: August 26, October 7, November 4, and December 2. Be sure to register before the deadline. 2b. Determine minimum and average SAT and ACT scores required for admission to

colleges on your list. This also may increase or decrease your list. 3. If you haven’t already, get involved in community and/or school activities, especially

those that are civic minded. Consider joining a team. You want to show that you are a well-rounded person, with various interests. You also want to demonstrate leadership skills. Some institutions may also like to see church or scouting participation. 4. Apply during the general application period, instead of early. The December or January

application deadline gives you time to get everything in order. Only apply early to colleges that you currently meet the acceptance criteria. 5. Prepare a list of at least two colleges you are pretty sure will accept you, two that

probably will accept you, and two that are long shots, but you really want to consider. Since you are beginning this process your senior year, I recommend you apply to a variety of 6-10 colleges. Finally, take a deep breath. Even if you are just getting on the college application band-

entertainment at the beautiful Southwest Arts Center, a perfect backdrop. From the ATLFunk Lords breakdancing crew to a small but mighty drumline, the event was nothing short of a celebration! There was acting, dancing, live painting, an art auction, instrumental selections and vocal selections, all illustrating the freedom of creative expression afforded the young people enrolled at Arlington. It was a moment that was set aside to exalt the arts along with academics and athletics, both of which are of the highest quality as demonstrated by the Boys Basketball Team’s recent State Championship. The highlights of the show were the fashion show and the rap performance of Common and John Legend’s “Glory.” The night ended in the crowd becoming choir, joining with the students in singing a gospel song, stressing the spiritual foundation that the nondenominational school was built upon. Parents, community members, and faculty and staff were on their feet yelling, "Encore!" and "Bravo!" Arlington Christian School is a non-profit private school. Funds raised will go to objectives ranging from leadership programs to advancements in technology. They also highlighted several individuals and organizations who are impacting the community. s I open my eyes and realize I am in the eighth month of the year (with eight being the number that symbolizes new beginnings), what a beginning I am about to embark upon! What I

am alluding to is that this month is also the month of my milestone 50th birthday. Yes, I know….they say a real lady never tells her age; I beg to differ. I am fully persuaded that every year I’m alive is also a year to count as a blessing. And though I will, in a heartbeat, jokingly tell anyone that I am only 25, please know that I am truly grateful for every year that God has allowed me to be here. The fact that I’m still here is not something that I take for granted. I’ve seen countless friends, family members, and colleagues who have made their earthly transition at a time in their life that could easily be deemed as simply “too soon.” To that end, I say that every day spent on this earth is a day to live on purpose. You must know your purpose in order to walk into your destiny. “How can that be, Alonia? Are not purpose and destiny one and the same?” These are questions I’m faced with all the time. It must be understood that they are not the same. Allow me to differentiate as succinctly as possible. First, destiny is something that will inevitably happen while purpose is something that is intended but may never manifest itself. Second, they work together: your destiny will push you toward your purpose, and your purpose will cause you to take action if you desire to walk into your destiny. Finally, purpose can be achieved without achieving destiny. But destiny cannot be achieved without achieving purpose. Think on these things for a moment, then allow me to leave you with this deposit: you were destined to live on purpose! Excited about your destiny, I am

An avid reader, Kemery made it into the Millionaire Club at her school for reading over one million words in a school year. Happy about skipping second grade like First Lady Michelle Obama did as a child, Kemery is currently in fourth grade and continues to excel academically, earning recognition as a four-time spelling bee participant and for her science fair project. She enjoys reading, science, chess, engineering, building things, playing outside, music and dance, performing in Ballethnic’s production of the “Urban Nutcracker” for the past two years. Although she is only eight years old, Kemery has been studying Japanese for the past seven years and reads, writes and speaks the language fluently. This year, Kemery was invited by her teacher at OMNI International School where she was learning Japanese to travel to Japan with her classmates and their families to put theory into practice.
